I think the show has potential, though there is a lot to be explained. Since everything seemed to be happening so quickly. The animation and music is really good too.

Pretty Galactic Boy

looooool

that was some epic mecha fight a the end

Theses girls with that glowing sign on their body. They remind me of the "Code" of C.C in Code Geass.

i'm thinking the same...what's worse is that its a guy doing the poses...who ever thought this one out must have been high...and thought "shit, let's animate a gay sailor moon and see what ppl think"

was an ok episode, but whoever thought or said that this was like TTGL need their head examined

I just noticed that even though this anime has no Comedy as it's genre, it managed to made me lol harder than most comedy anime I've watched. The sillyness is much more entertaining that most comedies out there!

AHAHAHAHA AHAHAHAAAAA.
Pretty boy? PRETTY boy? So that explains why he is allowed to wear a shirt that shows off his belly button. Guys, trust me, never ever wear anything like that, unless you, well how to put this nicely, are bi-curious.

Heh. Phantom of the Opera masks? Carnival costumes? All there. Seems like this show got the whole package all right.

Hmm, so they're diving straight into the story, now just lets hope it won't crash and burn as badly as Asura Cryin' did, for nothing's sake.

why did people look forward to this show again? or a better question, what's the catch for guys if you're not gay?

You seem to have confused FABULOUS with gay.

This episode was full of FABULOUS, but not once did I notice any homosexual or homoerotic undertones.

I mean face it, the anime industry has seen some pretty immasculine mecha pilots. At least this one's not a whiny bitch.

That's because the Japanese have a different standard of beauty than us Westerners. While big, muscly men are adored (in America at least), in Japan big, bulging muscles is viewed as a sign of homosexuality. The women there prefer men that are more effeminate. Just chalk it up to different culture standards.

The more you know.

For those who might have a little trouble understanding a few things in Star Driver, I have uploaded a handy little 13 page PDF released before the show that contains character, mecha, and organization bios, as well as the setting and cast and director interveiws (don't worry, it's translated in English)

It's just another robot show....Nothing special....nothing new....exactly the same as any other Mecha show. Or at least that's what the first episode has me believing. Unless I hear that the second episode is a godsend of anime excellence this remains dropped.

One more thing. Is this Shojo? Seriously I see all the signs. Massive necks. Titless heroine. Girls with overreact. All we need is a guy with a prominence chin and focuses on being a suave as possible.

There's no way this is shoujo with all the hot girls, nudity and hot-bloodedness.

That being said, I don't think this can fit into one specific genre besides mecha. It seems to be a genre buster.

Just because it has Shojo elements doesn't mean it can't have Shonen elements/appeal to men as well. Just look at Escaflowne.

Finally, something that's up there with Gurren-Lagann on the over-the-top awesomeness scale. While i'm not into these bishounen shows this one reminds me too much of TTGL, I'll have to see where they go with it... =D

why do people assume that ttgl is the only over the top mecha show? i mean fuck, the whole super robot genre is over the top. we had shin mazinger last year and a few years back, godannar, new getter robo, diebuster, koutetsushin jeeg, and even further back, getter robo armageddon, mazinkaiser, gaogaigar, gaogaigar final. I think i can at least speak and say that both gaogaigar and getter robo armageddon are some of the craziest and funnest shit I ever experienced.

Star Driver doesn't seem to even scratch part of these two shows yet, but we'll know sooner or later. Oh yeah, the catch for guys are pretty girls, I guesssssssssss but i usually don't care about them and I rather watch hentai if I want girls, but honestly, it's not that the characters are gay, it's just set in a very gay atmosphere and tone (including the old definition as well). Talk about an over exaggeration of colours.

There are certainly other such over the top shows, but they haven't been "in fashion" for a long time. TTGL is one of a handful of such shows within the last ten years and you could count on one hand the mecha shows with it's energy level in the same period of time who aren't remakes/reboots of pre-existing shows from a time when it was in fashion. Also the sheer size of the final robot makes it ideal as the iconic over the top mecha show. It's not that it's the only one, it's that it has become symbolic.

I hadn't caught on that the catch for guys was the girls. I'd thought it was the robots. How silly of me to forget that my gender is incapable of enjoying something that isn't sexually stimulating. As far as the atmosphere they do indeed seem to have gone for something bright, happy, and whimsical. As a general rule this has been the case with bones. If it's offputting for you then I can see why this would not be the show for you.

I'm the same way, I actually enjoy good characters and a moderately complex and engaging plot, and good mecha battles are just the icing on the cake. I don't mind a little pornography, but only if it "fits" (ie Watchmen)

To criticisms that the main characters wardrobe and behavior are gay, I simply would like to point out that Kamina was a character who refused to wear a shirt, covered his body in weird tattoos, and had an odd obsession with making the little boy he took with him everywhere pierce stuff with his drill. Let's not even touch that whole gattai fiasco.

And Viral, the badass rival, wore some manner of multicoloured spandex jumpsuit.

I'm a little confused after watchig the first ep. For the first sight this show has nothing new or special, from characters to humor. Main hero is typical, main heroine is typical, setting (school, community) is typical, mecha...is just mecha.
But on the other side, it has some strange (but great!) atmosphere - thanks to male henshin, Ginga Bishounen and costume design.
I'm gonna watch it anyway, the story looks intriguing=)

Galactic Bishounen ... lol >_<
At least his personality is interesting, reminds of a shounen (no more whiny pilots pls). Well one of the genres is supposedly shounen, so that's how is should have been. But personally I would get rid of at least the half of the big FABULOUS we got in this 1st ep.

Oh well we'll see how it turns out and let's hope they will hold back on bad humor a bit..

But correct me if I am wrong but Kamina also hit on Yoko in the first episode. Plus being topless isn't gay for certain characters. The only thing that was gay in Gurren Lagann was Leroy.

And why are people comparing this to Gurren Lagann? Besides giant robots I ain't drawing any connections. Sure Gurren Lagann was over the top but it made over the top awesome. This on the other hand just makes it stupid.

In this particular instance I just chose it as the most relevant current and topical instance of Gar in the mecha gender. The point of the whole statement was just to point out that if you're looking for gay you'll find it, but the rest of us genuinely don't care. This character also has expressed interest in the women so I don't think Kamina's interest in Yoko doesn't bring him lower than tacuto on the gaydar meter.

As far as gurren lagann being over the top awesome and this being over the top stupid, gurren lagann had plenty of the stupid. Especially in the early episodes. Episode one they had an escape plan involving two stampedes of pigs colliding to somehow form a makeshift propulsion system. Kamina kept bragging about his gurren brigade long before he had one. They had robots that ran on fighting spirit. In one instance they won the battle by rejuvenating the fighting spirit by means of eating a pig-mole's tale which it freely offered and presumably later grew back. The scene where they first learn how to gattai was just patently rediculous. The list goes on.

I...honestly can't decide what I think of this, it's taken me a while to digest everything that was thrown at me, but I've gotten over my initial WTF just happened reaction. I think I'll give it a few more episodes to see how it all shapes up. Pretty average so far, imo, although the animation is pretty damn good.

Some notes I took while watching;

-Character design is pretty awesome, although some characters have oddly long necks.

-Benio is really, really annoying.

-You can tell how important a character is by what their hair looks like.

-Some scenes have amazing artwork, specifically the one where Mr. Blue Hair is talking to Mr. Red Hair in front of the window.

-How exactly is doing pull ups in a swim suit worse than doing regular pull ups?

-Galactic Pretty Boy? That's a little lame.

-This show somehow reminds me of the shounen I watched when I was a little kid and nostalgia is always good.

-Am I the only person who wasn't confused?

-I kind of forgot that nobody on this site likes anything about any anime.
