Do you let MAL's ratings influence what you watch?

New
I watch anime based on how the MAL community has rated it.

No..

Considering how most people score their animes, not mentioning that many of which are actually trolling; MAL's ratings never influence me in any way. As for what I watch is what I like. What other people like may not be something I don't like and thus, I don't watch. More over, just because an anime with a high score I gave is on my watching list doesn't mean I will complete it for sure either as that I do drop some animes that have high scores as that I don't have time to watch a huge list of animes or animes with so many episodes. Generally, my current anime list is fully updated with the exception of the scores as that I am going to leave it. Perhaps, I will give different scores if I watch some of the animes again but that doesn't matter at all and thus, just ignore the scores in the completed and dropped lists. The scores in the other lists are quite new..

When i was still new to MAL, the ratings influenced me ALOT. Thing like Mushishi, LoGH, Aria, and Monster were all anime that I never heard of then.

After getting used to MAL, i began to put more faith into reviews from reviews that I find extremely helpful such as tehnominator and Cihan (now known as Beatnik but i will still call him Cihan anyways). If aren't any helpful reviews on them at all, then I will get some recommendations from a few friends and hardcore otakus that i know in MAL and another site i go to. MAL ratings are kinda shitty even before the trolling incident.

Yes and no. If the show sounds interesting or that I might like it, even if it has a rating of 5 I'll still watch it to see if I was correct that I would like it, but I just go into it with some reservations keeping in mind that most people didn't like it all that much.

If it's rated really high, I might check it out if I had some reservations about it, but again if I don't dig it, I just don't dig it.

I was far too well established when I found MAL. I may occasionally use it as a resource to confirm a decision, but that's it. What do I care what anyone else thinks? I like what I like, hate what I hate, and the only way to find what's right is to know what I'm looking for.
I'm usually pretty good at avoiding what I won't like. I just occasionally skip something I will.

I don't look at the scores, but i skim through the reviews. I also look at the recommendations, and watch the first two episodes before i decide if to keep watching or drop it. Everyone has a different taste, so the scores don't have a huge impact for me.

I don't read reviews but MAL's ratings are quite important to me. I usually choose anime I watch from MAL's top 500. The series with lower rate are usually quite bad (not always though)

The overall score, I dont care or even look at the top anime/manga ranking or popularity lists so where it falls in relation to other shows doesnt interest me. I usually have much more shallow reasons for picking what I watch, like pretty pictures. :P

Sometimes, depends what genre. If it's one I'm familiar with (e.g action) I give it a go no matter the rating. If it's something less familiar to me (e.g romance) I'll probably look for a high/higher rating.

i don't know whats the deal with people saying no.

i mean, honestly, yar, if an anime is rated high and i havent heard of it, obviously ill check it out over some obscure show ranked in the 500's. sure the top anime list is less than comprehensible, but im not so strange as to think what the general masses of fans enjoy isn't something ill enjoy as well. why shouldnt mal ratings influence your interest in shows and what you watch?

Yah, same as above. I haven't watched much anime so I want at least somewhat good stuff, definitely not anything below the top #500. It gives you a general clue as to the quality.

Yep, everytime I'm bored and don't know what to watch I go over to the Top 30 Anime list and see what I've missed. I'm watching Kara no Kyoukai and Clannad: AS right now thanks to that.

But other than that, no, if a series sounds interesting I'll watch it regardless of its rating, if I even bother to read it at all.

This is where my top 15 anime TV series are in the MAL top anime list:
1405, 1203, 703, 104, 1572, 93, 162, 1619, 496, 175, 1138, 417, 1114, 1276 and 253
Half of them are over the 500 mark.
Letting MAL's rankings influence me would be very stupid, no?

Well not so much the ratings - but the discussion boards.

Put it this way - if I'm about to drop an anime, I'll check MAL first to see if it's worth it, or what I'm into :)

Citing the fact I'm still new to the site (not even knowing MAL existed until about two months ago), I'm confident to say that the rating system here has not influenced my choices in my anime selection as of now. However, I will admit that I do look at an anime's rating that I've dropped to see if it's worth picking back up again. Other than that, I just watch whatever I have available to watch.

I'll be honest and say yes the ratings of anime affect my decision to watch it. To an extent. (>.>)

This is where I think most people get hung up. They wanna give a straight yes/no answer but that's not possible. When looking at an anime on MAL I look at the rating, read some reviews, and see the recommendations. All these help me get a gauge on the anime but in the end I (and I think everyone else as well) leaves any final judgments up to themselves. With a community as big as MAL's varied or 'incorrect' scores are expected because everyone has different taste/opinions in anime. We're all smart we know what we like and what we don't.

To say you don't (although I bet there are some who really don't) use the information from ratings/reviews/etc. to gauge and gather information for their own judgment of an anime seems kinda hypocritical. :P

edit: I think I may have gotten off topic a little... (>.<)

Yes, if it's scored above a 7, I give it a try if it looks good, below a 7 and I won't watch it. Or, if the story looks ok (I might watch it, ~ I'm being indecisive) and it's higly rated I'll give it a try.

But, the scores are often misleading, a lot of good shows are rated between 7 - 7.50 (Strawberry Panic is an example

Reviews also play a big part in weather or not I'll watch it. If the show gets a lot of bad reviews, I probably son't watch it ~ depending on what the reviews say are bad.

I will say it does have a slight impact on what I watch, for example when I look up a random anime on some website, I check back on MAL to see what Rank # it is; I usually have more leaniency towards anime within the top 1000, but that doesn't stop from watching "Lower Ranked" animes.

Other than that, I often check the top rated animes (say Rank #1-200) to see if they really live up to their standard. Often I'm not disappointed, however, all in the end, one should watch whatever one feels like.

I'm surprised by how few people seem to check the ratings on shows, but I often use the scoring and reviews on MAL as guides when I search for new series to watch. Since I finished watching most of the obvious shows awhile ago and I've been searching for those "rare gems" on the less popular end, I've found it extremely useful to scrounge through the rankings.

Mostly, I use the following guide:
Above 8.0 = OK, sample the series if it looks at all interesting
7.0 to 8.0 = Iffy, only watch if it looks pretty good
Below 7.0 = Don't bother unless it looks like a possible rare gem

It saves time to rely on this rough rule while searching for anime, and the Top Anime list is good for just working down the scores and looking for interesting names. I also usually check the reviews - extremely positive reviews on a low ranking show, very unusual reviews, or extremely negative reviews on a high ranking show may influence whether I find and download the show to sample it.

After I sample a show (watch just the first 1-2 eps), though, I go entirely based on my own interest, and nothing on MAL ever affects my final judgement and comments. I get the impression from this thread that people think it's "bad" to rely on other people's opinions to search for fun shows, but it doesn't make sense to me to waste time by ignoring such a useful resource. There are many shows I've loved watching that I never would have found without scrounging around the Top Anime list for names.

I do use the ratings on occasion. mostly for what shows to avoid as opposed to what shows to watch. For some of the higher rated shows, i usually check out a few things like animation studio, director, maybe a synopsis of it to see if it sounds interesting. etc etc because i often find my tastes to be quite opposite of a lot of things in the high ranks.

Actually yes, but not so much anymore. When I first started watching anime and reading manga, the rating were very helpful for figuring out what some of the more acclaimed series were. But it was more out of curiosity of why the series were so popular. But more important then the rankings for me was the history of anime and manga itself. If it is a historical landmark in any way shape or form then it has a much higher chance of going on my plan to read/watch lists. The evolution of the two mediums have always interested me over the popularity. But sometimes there is a parallel between the two ideas.

The reviews tend to be more of an indicator for me whether to decide to tackle something or not. I am moving away from the rating overall now as I get more into the underground/alternative manga (I have practically abandoned anime for the past couple of months).

Well I guess that put you in the minority for opinions of that show. Didn't it have to be highly rated/favorited by a large number of people to get there at all?

I mean rating is supposed to reflect the opinion of the majority, right? Even if you think the rating system is flawed the majority are going to "push" and anime to an average whether that be a high or low one.

There's plenty of far more important factors, but it can give me a rough idea about the quality. 8 and above should be pretty good, 7 to 8 should be okay, everything below that isn't worth it. That's a hell of a broken system, though.

I would for example seach Ecchi or something and check the ones rated the from the highest first. see the summary and deicde if I like it. but if I search a genre and a anime have rating of over 8 than I would probably check it out even if the summary don't really sound that interesting to me.
