I remember picking up this manga to read one weekend, very pleased to see it get an adaptation.
The first episode looked very clean, especially the sword battle with the use of cgi.

What if we made the teacher character from most Fantasy/RPG/Isekai anime the MC?

Honestly, a much older MC is already refreshing enough. That alone has me hooked and wanting to watch this.

Although ngl, if I got told "hey i rec'd this job for you, you gotta go or get punished" (I assume jail time if he didn't??) I'D BE SO PISSED! That was played for a joke but DAMN, what if he genuinely couldn't go!? Scene made me laugh but what the hell.

Also damn, giving us a muscled redhead in Lysandra?!! Sheeeeeesh, I'm on her team no doubt in ANYTHING.

Looks good, might be my top anime of the season I'm interested in at the moment.

What the hell!

The studio nailed the art & animation, ableit character designs seems to be slightly altered characters from various other projects.

But what's with this direction. They should've stretched it till atleast mid of Episode 2 with more details & better pacing.

As for English Dub audio, either Prime Video (aka Amazon Studios) or the product studio or producers or director or VAs can't say which one is responsible for this abomination.

As far as script is considered, it's quite close to subtitles but the VA selection its just not upto the mark.

VAs shitted on this episode at the very least & someone let that crap, not only to continue but also gave the go ahead to the airing.

I checked the first episode out not expecting much and ended it wanting more.

Got a sense that this one is going to have way more depth and sophistication than others that it might be compared to (Ossan, Parry, etc.) and that they've actually done their homework on swordsmanship.

This was the first new show in a while I've come out of the first episode thinking "It's over already? That was fast!" At least so far the pacing and handling of dramatic tension is a cut above the average show. This could potentially be quite excellent. At the same time it might flop on all this promise... guess we'll find out soon enough.

The story is meh. The main problems I have with this show is the animation and style of the clothing of the characters. I felt like there were three different art styles or artists attempting to mesh the show together. As though that wasn't distracting enough, what is up with the MC's near non-existent gloves? It's as if his hands have plumber-butt! They are impractical and I couldn't help but cringe at every scene that includes his hands! I felt like I was being trolled. Not only that, the armor depicted on the female characters don't even look like armor. The detail is so poor and is basically skin tight with painted designs to mimic the look of armor, it's so bad. I can't even continue watching this anime, it was so cringe.

I love it, I didn't expected that. The plot is simply lovely (F1 things), this anime has a great future for a pair of seasons, i thiink it coldn't be more longer because at the moment there no evidences that exist an general history or a side story that the hero have to defeat a dungeon or a demon (I prefer this anime,i don't like the general isekai animes).
I really want that the anime will continue with the plot of the training, and no recenter to create a harem please.

Great animation and an ALMOST interesting story. So close.

Grown man swordsman who just settled in on being a teacher as the MC is fresh enough. He's actually stronger than everyone else but doesn't appear to be Isekai one hit OP. Which is great. But we're ONE episode in and it's already looking like a standard harem. And it's just... :sigh:

It would have been more interesting if actually going out into the city introduced him to women his own age. Heck maybe he meets a woman who settled in as a teacher or baker who likewise just expected to do that and maybe THEY have a romance.

But Anime's gonna Anime and MCs are gonna have a bevy of young women babes who want to service him that he's going to be completely obtuse about.

It seems to be another fantasy harem focused on an older character. However, I hope it emphasizes his training of others, as I find that aspect intriguing.

I would really like to reimagine the story of Beryl Gardinant in the real world of 2024, swapping knights and magic for the world of Olympic kendo tournaments and a spotlight on sports kendo and mentorship.
Beryl Gardinant is a humble retired kendo instructor in a rural Japanese village, running a dojo that caters mostly to locals looking to learn the art casually. In his youth, Beryl dreamed of glory, even competing at the national level, but injuries and life circumstances kept him from ever making a name for himself. He settled into a quiet life, teaching the local children with patience and modesty.

His quiet days are shattered when an unexpectedly his one of his former pupils who now the reigning Olympic kendo team captain .
She tells Beryl that she successfully persuaded the national kendo federation to nominated him to be the head coach for the Olympic kendo team for the 2024 Paris Games. Shocked, Beryl doesn’t understand why he’s needed—after all, his students have surpassed him in skill and fame. But she insists:
Reluctantly, Beryl agrees to take on the role, traveling to Tokyo to reunite with his some of former students—

I’m kinda sad they skipped some parts from the manga. Especially the duel with the blonde guy, it skipped some detailed fight scenes and dialogue. Some dialogue was Citrus explaining Beryl is good at fighting because he has good eyes

Manga readers, how much does this ep cuts from the manga? (no spoiler please)
@MinxNight not alot to be honest just

- a few flashback
- a scene of the MC stopping the girls fighting when they find the Inn for him to live
- The fight with the knight was longer with the MC defeating him 5-6 times

A great first episode that hooked me with its setup and how the arrogant swordsman came around after being beaten by Beryl. Also, I loved seeing how every student became an extraordinary adult from his teachings.

figured i'd dig a bit... Blu Digital GroupINC out of LA... mhm never heard of them... aha... Central Post LA got bought out back in 2022... aha. i hadn't heard that. one of Netflix's go-to subcontractors for subtitles and dubbing... but this one is streaming on Amazon? that sucks, this title is going to get schit viewership on that platform. bummer, i enjoyed the episode. pass the title around folks so it gets good word of mouth. because Amazon's anime profile and saturation in the marketplace is a total toxic waste dump.

good quality animation and excellent work on the character designs. i liked the sword fighting/katas MOCAP work. the muscles and tendon detailing on forearms and hands was excellent work too! the props team needs to be collectively slapped in the face repeatedly with stinky rotten fish and shamed in front of the whole staff for this show. they CONSTANTLY dicked up the perspectives and measurements of EVERY WEAPON ON-SCREEN. every shot was wrong. all of them. that was total schitt work on the swords. total.

as usual, crap wagons and horses and cart designs and animations though. total crap.

i liked the buildings but ugh... too TOO much mixing of Asian architecture and European. pick. a. region. and stick with it.

who wrote the travel timeline and distances in this episode? a DAY to travel to the capital and he's originally only going to teach 3-4 TIMES a month? ok so how tha fukk is his dojo out in the sticks? a day's travel by horse? wagon?? cart??? carriage????? walking?????? ok. sigh. authors and screenwriters need to do their GD homework on how far/long/fast a person can walk, a horse bearing a person can walk/trot/gallop, and how long it takes 1 horse, 2 horse, or a higher numbered hitch cart/wagon/carriage/coach to cover a distance. any ANY travel measured by a day and just 1 day dawn-to-dusk is normal. hell before automobiles a trip from NYC proper OUTSIDE the city using one horse n buggy overnight was a chore, but that wasn't the sticks. Albany/Upstate NY would take 3-4 days by carriage from The City, faster if you took a train. plus those were 1800's era measurements without backtracking to the 16-1700's... let alone Europe even earlier than that. so to be 'out in the boonies'?? this dojo would need to be 3-7 DAYS away from the capital. those kinds of distances would entirely and utterly prevent him from teaching at his dojo ever again. he would spend more time on the roads each month wearing out horses than he would spend teaching the knights OR his kids out in the boonies.

Passione and their frequent collaborators Hayabusa Film... mhm... Haya will keep Pass' boingboing Gainax Physics in check... that'll be a disappointment though. Pass has always done a high-quality boing.
@KiliianSleipnir I prefer to look for the good stuff, for example at the beginning they showed a German Mutiren, it's a kind of jab with opposition, a schielhau strike with a short blade. The kick with the tip is done in the Japanese style, I think, because Europeans control the left hand and hit with the right hand at the same time, otherwise you can get a double-touch. Well, the "crown blow" is a joke, of course there are positions with the feet close together, but usually it is an intermediate position, sometimes found in Philippo Wadi works.

I wouldn't say I'm a professional, it's a hobby. I translate fencing books and interpret what is written into movements.

Pretty good start to this series that reminded me a lot of "My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer" as the male MC of that series was also middle-aged, lived in a backwater village, and was stronger than he realized. Regarding Beryl's dad wanting grandkids, Allucia may be willing to do that (and possibly other girls too lol).

mmhm! it's greek to me... but i hear ya. somebody who's reading 'the books' and enjoying 'the looks' here? my thanks! that means they're using at least one very talented swordwork choreographer who has multicultural knowledge and 'expert' to map out their fights and make sure the MOCAP looks good.

with 2 years of SCA sword n board work, over 15 years with quarterstaff, good ol fashioned pine police and riot batons with plexi shields, never even attempted Olympic fencing (way WAY too many rules n equipment for me) foil epee or sabre... no training or live steel... that's way too dangerous for me. i was curious for a while about HEMA ... buuut it got way too 'doctrine and dogma' and 'sport' by the time i had heard about it... so i'm familiar in a general overall vague way. as the old saying goes, 'i don't know much about art. but i know what i like.'

but you can see in ep2 where the background students are all ... ughhh! craaaaap! cheap wireframes with basic one two three loop... one two three loop... motion sequences. i know studios gotta save manhours cash etc. and can't 'beauty shot' the mobs... but it IS a central focus to the guy's life in the Capital... teaching those students... so making said 'mob students' look snappy SHOULD have been one of ep2 episode director's concentrations.

plus, it is ONLY ep2... if i can catch that big of a 'oh crap they made THAT look icky!' this soon in a TV Season... along with those bad measurements and perspectives on the weapons in ep1 \shrug/ makes me think the production schedule and planning were inherently imbalanced ...

@KiliianSleipnir You're probably right about the visuals, but it's a pleasure to see some nicely executed techniques. It's not just European technique here, but the way Japanese see it. Doppelhau(s) is a house (some people mistake the names), and dupliren is a dupliren. Also, in the opening, if we're talking about it, 2 episode about at 2:42 shows Zwerhau, and to the credit of the artists, mc-kun holds Longsword (aka half in common parlance) with the correct grip.

That was a really good first episode, pretty chill but then with a great swordfight for some action. The MC seems humble and not too fidgety which is a nice change from other shows and the swordfighting CGI was really well done. The only thing I did not like was the white-haired girl already being in love with him, that was too cliche for me.

A great first episode. I came in with no expectations, and it’s been a pleasant surprise. I think I’m going to enjoy every minute of this show, and I already want a Season 2. I hope he finds some hot MILF in the town. Students being in love with him is all fine and dandy, but they shouldn’t act on it. Otherwise, I see no issues with the show.

Personally, I would love to see more anime with adult characters (who actually behave like adults) in my fantasy genre. It’s way too overcrowded with teen MCs. It might have made sense when only teens and kids used to watch anime. But that’s long past. Now it’s quite mainstream, and a lot of viewers have grown up with it, so the demand for "Ossan" shows is surely there.

Alright, I’m just gonna start off by saying I genuinely thought this would be a joke-anime in the sense it uses a character who looks very similar to Rudeus’ dad to bring the readers and viewers into watching the show but I was dead wrong. It’s about a swordsman who’s got real talent, and takes a spin on the adventurer genre where usually it’s the younger generation who sprint into action but this time it’s a semi-retired instructor who finally gets to experience some battles, as well as getting hitched, lol. Also, art quality is dang impressive as well, looking forward to watching more!

The beginning of the anime is quite strange — the father wants his son to give him grandchildren, the teacher’s students come to visit and want him to leave the village or the outskirts of town…

But I actually liked the beginning! It was fast-paced, clear, and gave a simple introduction to the overall theme of the anime. I’m excited to watch the next episode and continue until we finish the whole thing.

Also, one of my friends has read the manga and recommended it to me. But did you guys notice how the grandfather wants him to get married, and all of his standout students in the city are females...? It’s kind of obvious, right? Haha. I’m worried it might turn into a romantic comedy in the end.
