I've often heard that manga is indeed pretty popular in France....but is it the biggest manga purchaser after Japan?

I'm not so sure about that....but I would love to see the numbers.

All the big publishers are in America when it comes to English translated manga (Viz, Yen Press, Kodansha Comics USA, Seven Seas, and Dark Horse)

But I honestly don't know....again, if someone has the numbers, I'd be very interested in seeing them.

Why are people saying USA? There aren't a lot of anime watchers here unless you live near a Japanese community.

Righstuf.com one of the largest anime retailers on the WB is based out of Iowa. Not a lot of Japanese there. Naka-kon in Kansas City has over 9000 attendees. Not a lot of Japanese here. We even have a second anime con that has over a thousand attendees.

For manga France has the second-largest market after Japan, for anime it's harder to say since you can't just compare the sales because lot of the popularity comes from watching TV.
I probably regret this post by now.

Maybe it's because there were a lot of cooperation between France and Japan for the production of animes in the 70s', 80s' and 90s' (for exemple Ulysse 31 and The Mysterious Cities of Gold). They were also a couple of anime based on French novels (Ie Naki Ko, Perrine Monogatari, ...) that were really popular among children. Kids that grew up with these "cartoons" maybe had more tendencies toward animes when they were older.

(In fact, the only animes that were interesting when I was a kid all turned out to be animes...) (Calimero, Maya the Bee, Hey! Bumboo, ...)

France in general has a strong affinity for comics, stronger than most other countries except maybe Belgium and Japan. Comics are just more mainstream over there so there's less of a barrier for manga to gain popularity.
I probably regret this post by now.

Also it is really popular in Russia, to the point that people make fan made voice overs for all shows (DUB is a rarity).

Just gonna put this here.

Note it's only a trend info of the search queries and related queries on Google. Not a data of bookmarked anime sites (ie. MAL has more U.S. visitors but is searched more by other countries), TV viewership data, or data on specific titles.

I'd guess China or Korea too, due to their population and culture similarities respectively...
And alot of manga, anime and LN get translated and licensed there pretty quickly too.

Naruto alone did it, don't get fooled by your friend. On a more serious note, it has something to do with a local garbage network in the Philippines that keeps recycling shows that was already popularized by a rival network. Can't just get enough with Cardcaptor Sakura, Jackie Chan adventures, Sailor Moon, DBZ, Bleach, Detective Conan, Pokemon, Doraemon, Yu Yu Hakusho, Magic Knight Rayearth, Mojacko, Voltes V, Slam Dunk, then go damn live in the Philippines and wait for the cycle to repeat so you can watch all of them.

I remember this Japanese show and there they said that anime is very popular in Philippines and sent someone to visit the country and they were even surprised that some anime's were actually made in Philippines and all. Then they showed anime related things etc.

Here I found it, lol

But I think it's either Philippines or Taiwan.
Taiwan sells a lot of popular anime merchandise.

I think I remember seeing an article on Crunchyroll about this. I believe that it was the Philippines that topped the list with Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore not far behind. I believe it was then followed by the US.

It's moderately popular over here. I mean there was probably only a handful of kids I knew at school who watched anime but pretty much everyone grew up on stuff like Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, Naruto, Beyblade (To a lesser extent) and Yu-Gi-Oh.

In general it's a very niche thing and even when you go to anime conventions the most popular stuff is usually shit like Naruto and Attack on Titan. Although Love Live recently had a pretty big boom in popularity which made me very happy.

But the conventions do draw in some pretty big numbers so I'd say they've got their audience.

This. and Just this,

Europe and America are just not on the same league as the rest of the world.

South America and Middle east is probably around the Same.
China (Big Cities), Taiwan and Hong Kong are on the ball, With alot of the new shows being dubbed for broadcast, and nearly all manga and Light novels are translated and sold. I assume South Korea is on the same boat.

Southern Eastern Smaller nations, Like Thailand, Vietnam and Phillipines are probably second.

I think it's quite popular here in Singapore too, just that people here don't flaunt their interests that much or afraid it'll be embarrassing for people to know 'cuz a lot of people here can be very judgemental.

Anime like Pokemon,Digimon,Beyblade have been popular in india for a long time(that is if you will consider them to be proper Anime's) But Its seen a very recent popularity surge with most people now familiar with Introductory level Anime(Naruto,Stiens;gate,Conan,Death note etc.) and the cons are getting bigger and better. Now I dont know if it is the next after japan but it certainly should be in contention for the top five spots.

Guys, in term of number, and not per capita, France is the 2nd country in manga consumption after Japan : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manga_outside_Japan
The "Japan Expo" in Paris is the largest (in entry number) anime convention outside Japan : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime_convention
And for anime broadcast, it's verry hard to find number but in France we had anime on 2 of the 5 free channel (back then) since 1988, and now you can see anime on a lots of differents channel, free/satellite/cable, and (at least) two of them is only for anime.
For DVD/Blueray sells I find nothing but with piracy i guess it's hard to tell.

China easily has the largest anime community in the world outside of Japan. For example, let's look at the alexa rankings of the primary anime streaming sites:

nicovideo.jp, the primary anime streaming site in Japan:
75th in the world

bilibili.com, the primary anime streaming sites in China:
139th in the world

myanimelist.net:
1,177th in the world

crunchyroll.com:
1,315th in the world

Plus, we can look at the number of members in anime-related forums.

r/anime 361,616 subscribers,

the subforum for harem animes(后宫动漫吧), ONLY A SUBGENRE FOR ANIMES on Baidu Tieba(百度贴吧), China's answer to reddit, has 1,405,964 subscribers.

The Attack on Titan fanpage on facebook as 1,060,500 members, coupled with the 737,629 members from MAL, that's 1,798,129.

The Attack on Titan subforum on Baidu Tieba(进击的巨人吧)has 1,566,216 members, EVEN WHILE THE SHOW AND THE MANGA WAS OFFICIALLY BANNED IN CHINA, AND FANS ARE FORCED TO USE ILLEGAL MEANS TO WATCH THE SHOW.

and lastly, here's the link to the aformentioned websites:

I hate nice girls.
If they so much as say hello, it stays on my mind.
If they return texts, my heart races.
The day one calls me, I know I'll look at my call history and grin.
But that's just them being nice.
People who are nice to me are also nice to everyone else.
I almost end up forgetting that.
If the truth is cruel , then lies must be kind.
That's why kindness is a lie.
I gave up on always expecting it,
always mistaking it,
and even hoping for it.
Someone who's' worked so hard at being alone doesn't fall for the
same trick twice.
I'm a veteran at this.
I’m the best when it comes to losing.
That's why I'll always hate nice girls.

Well aside from the other nations in eastern and southeastern Asia, just based on my experience with all sorts of different people from all around the world, I'd say that Russia and Latin America take the cake easily.

Germany also has lots of anime fans as well.

Of course, USA is near the top too, in the end most of us are watching anime, reading mangas, and playing visual novels with the help of translators from USA.

France has a decent following if manga sales are anything to go by.
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...
