Good for Ryo for being able to enjoy a festival, food, and have some fun for once. He's been through too much this series.

On the other hand, Abel took on a job that he wasn't too thrilled with. Episode could've been a better mood without Abel's part imo but oh well.

I would say it’s nice for Ryo to get some r&r at the festival, but he’s been doing that all series lmao. Whenever they mention any sort of protective barrier in a fantasy series you know that shit’s coming down. So many high ranking officials and a princess in one area, you knew something bad would happen. Biggest question is who’s behind it??

We also got some indication that Abel is more than he lets on.. he clearly had some connection to the prince and another identity at one point, just who is he.. looks like Ryo isn’t the only one with multiple lives.

Poor Sera having Ryo withdrawals since he’s away on a quest lol. Don’t worry, your library buddy will be back soon.

Princess Fiona is so gorgeous! Love her design. Can’t wait to see Ryo and the inferno mage presumably in action next week.

Ehh, just skipped through most of the episode cause it became pretty quickly apparent that nothing of real importance was going to happen and it was just a buildup episode. I think my issue with this series is becoming the fact that there’s a lot of loose storylines out there and then some general movement forward but there’s a lot of slow, inconsequential progression followed by “climaxes” that are resolved in no time flat.
I definitely think this series (along with most action/adventure series) are better to binge once the season is out so when there are inconsequential/pointless lulls, you at least know the action will resume at some point in your binge watch rather than blue balling yourself week to week.

@ShoupyDoo I was thinking roughly the same, especially the binging. I really like the premise, but I've been a bit disappointed with the pacing.
I don't mind a slow burn, but this isn't that. It's just not being paced well as a weekly.

I love a peaceful episode like this, I hope no one died from the upcoming attack, more than enough people already died from the dungeon accident, I don't need any more casualty.

The animation has been bad. half of the episode was a power point.

@16bitsDreams It's not even the pace, it's the lack of focus. The show is all over the place

Decent episode. The festival was really entertaining, especially the scene where Dan completely stopped caring about the race and focused only on beating the guy from the other team to a bloody pulp, until they both flipped their ships over & fell into the river, haha. I also loved Eto's new bow & Abel's bullseye.

okay I kinda like the show for what it is, but I'm gonna rant here ahm:
those room 10 members should have been buried dead 5 episodes ago!
they are bland, generic as hell, uninteresting, background characters should have been their pinnacle!, and yet they get more screen time than Sera and Abel's party combined.
they are in almost every episode, and that's not the anime's fault it's the LN's.
and now the guild master has to punish Ryo to do a quest with them, which feels like more like a punishment for me more than Ryo.
like I don't skip minutes in episodes, like ever, yet they were so boring I had to skip some of their screen time which like half the episode!
why!? WHY!? why focus on them!!!??? they are so boring they even making Ryo look boring.
aaaaaand DONE!
anyway, next episode might actually be good...

Although this episode wasn't satisfactory and leaves much to be desired (hopefully next episode will be way better,) I liked the 'all-over-the-place' storytelling because it matched the mood of the festival event. Like last time, my expectation is that this is a build up to something that'd glow up Ryo somehow.

This anime feels like there is so much promise to it but just falls short. I don't know if its the pacing, progression. lack of focus on the main character or just how it seems like there is a lot happening with nothing having a solid foundation. I really want to like it, though its not a bad anime, just feels like it could have been a lot better with some tweaks.

@ShoupyDoo Agreed. I did not like this episode lol I mostly skipped through it too because it just felt so boring, and it's not like I even missed out on much. There was some like boat race, an archery contest, something to do with crossbows and nobility bs... This is not what I wanted from this show. Tbh I've been pretty disappointed with where this show has been going lately. Might need to drop if things don't get interesting soon.

I don't really understand this whining that it's a filler, especially considering that they introduced characters who will play their role, gave hints about the background of another character and yes, most likely there will be at least two seasons, maybe with a break, and the original seems to be only 7 volumes and Sera is a cutie, she found a new punching bag and interlocutor, and he took a vacation.

I like the series, so I didn’t expect such a boring episode. It’s great if you want to learn how to introduce yourself in Japanese, because that’s all you get here. It felt like reading the characters’ names off a list, with zero creativity. Imagine starting with a fantastic, mysterious world, then deciding the best way to introduce new characters is a nothingburger of an episode.

yeah, that didn't make much sense... the 'treasure' as well as its 'power cord' should have guards on them. space out the guards over the length of the cord and that 'short' wouldn't have happened. the 'control room' needed more guards too. ya don't go lax on security with VIPs that I visiting.

i guess the 'important ship' will be part of 'the plot' or it wouldn't have been featured twice in this episode. maybe that's the getaway car?

so, i wonder what 'our guy' is going to get into during 'the plot'? i bet saving one of the VIPs or something.

that boat race was pretty stupid. put the fighters who are the strongest dudes also at the oars rowing and ignore 'the combat phase' on the second half of the course. two folks rowing would have provided more speed than the boats with one fighter and one rower.

the floating barrels with the arrow targets on them was a cool idea though! that would be a very challenging course as long as the barrels only had single anchor lines. the barrels' movements would be even more irregular without the extra stability of two or more anchors.

Considering how much info we got about Abel and Sera and Prince Conrad and Princess Fiona and the Inferno Magician (who she calls 'Shishou'), I was surprised that the episode felt so slow. I thought about it a moment, and then I rewatched the episode starting at 4:02, and it didn't feel slow at all. Four minutes of mindless festival filler at the beginning can mess up the entire feel of a show.

Sera looked very much dejected when she heard that Ryo won't be back for at least another week lol It was cute how she was searching for him & finally decided to come to the guild to ask if he was around.

And of course this episode ends with a cliffhanger. I knew all those feel-good festival fun vibes was a prelude to the disaster that was foreshadowed at the beginning of the episode.

this as a whole has been a huge disappointment. the first 4 episodes were so good but after he got into the village it's been way too improperly paced, no clear story and filled with unimportant world building and Ryo basically doing nothing at all except eat and rest. it frustrates me greatly. yes he wanted a slow life but that can be showed in the fun actions he does not the amount of inaction he does. it feels incredibly lazy

I was really hopeful for this series in the beginning, but seeing that we are at 10/12 episodes and it was essentially a scattered exposition dump, I don't see it ending in a very satisfying way. There is really no time to build chemistry with Sera, MC is probably the most OP mage but still walks around like a noob - even though he already proved a couple of times that he isn't. And now we have a bunch of nobles that are being introduced 3 episodes before the season ends. I mean, sure, they can end it on a cliff hanger, but this pacing is quite disappointing. Does anyone know if the source material is doing any better?

A rather chill episode, but it was quite fun. With many notable figures in town, something is bound to happen. They teased the conflict at the end, but with it being in the garden party, I doubt Ryo is gonna be involved.

There's only two episodes left, so I hope we get to see action from Ryo in both.

This was a terrible episode.

Let's ignore the fact that it's called "The Open Port Festival" and that "festival" might as well come with quotes around it because it was the most disappointing attempt at a festival in an anime, ever. The bigger issue is that it's the 10th episode and there still isn't a proper antagonist or a reason for hero to do anything. So far he has only fucked around in library with his stupid sandals on and we've been getting stories on NPC's who are as interesting as any other generic NPC's in any game or anime.

The last two episodes better be the best damn action packed episodes else I'm giving this show 5/10 and moving on.

Actually, now that I think about it, this episode pretty much reflects the entire show so far. Whole lot of nothing happening while the sandal wearing MC does fuck-all majority of the time. MC looks and acts like a child so that's already -2 points from me, and to top it all, not a single character has an interesting personality or skill-set.

Honestly, I don't understand the hate toward this particular episode. I like it when the series focuses more on the world and the characters within it, BUT obviously that depends on how much I like said characters.

  • We follow the group from Room 10 because we're learning how an average young adventurer would behave in this world and situation.
  • We follow the princess group to get to know them as characters, since we know little to nothing about them, and I love every scene with them because it's clear they're more than just coworkers (the wizard being the princesses' teacher, the other is the princesses' assistant, and finally the detail-oriented person of the group).
  • I would have loved to follow or see more of Abel's group to see how different things are for a high-ranking adventurer in this situation, even though we can see they're basically pseudo-nobles.

I'm really enjoying this series and its approach to a slow-burn story. Furthermore, based on what we saw in the episode "Dungeon Wave", it's possible and very likely that the whole situation will be resolved without Ryo's intervention, allowing other characters to shine (probably the princess and the fire mage) which is a plus in my book

After this episode I'll only say this quote from the movie On the Waterfront:

You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let's face it.

Why you may ask? Simple, this is how I feel about this series! This could have been one of the best isekai ever! Instead of this lame ASF thing we're getting for the last 8 or some episodes!

Why insert politics in the last 3 episodes of the season? Should've put that whole subplot away for next season after introducing the new characters. I just wanted some cozy adventures with Abel and Sera...

Well, at least the festival was nice, and maybe that one whole minute of Sera.
