Can't find my comment I made a while ago on this, but City Hunter has a flawless first episode.

EDIT: AVIF on the way. AVIF of the cool scene added. Again, my old comment had a YouTube clip of this scene, but I couldn't find that clip either, so custom AVIF was my only option.

@peodsgns That was indeed disappointing given how popular OnK is, so I hope they will change that to an anime-original ending.

Gintama’s first episode is like a love letter to everything I love in anime itself. parody, absurdity, dominatrix, mystery, aliens, hopeless middle-aged men and emotional bait-and-switch.

Attack on Titan, Spy x Family, Frieren, Clevatess, Dandadan, Chainsaw Man comes to mind. Overall I don't think any first episode tops AoT's but Frieren's first episode is a close second.

EDIT: Not sure why I didn't think of it until now but Kijin Gentoushou first episode absolutely deserves a mention here.

so...i'v got a feeling im gonna get some hate for this...but Sword Art Online has one of the best first episodes imho. it starts off light hearted, introduces the game, the main character, and the overall world that this show takes place in...afterwards, it gets surprisingly dark, introduces the main antagonist, and the peril that the characters in the show are set so face for the rest of the season. it's all done quite well. not to mention, it also introduces us to a fantastic OST that will accompany us throughout the rest of the show.

Code Geass, by far. Even though the 3-episodes rule apply in order to get the full introduction, the very first episode is already a perfect prologue.
Everything changes. Even the happy and funny things eventually disappear. How can I still enjoy this place then?
- Furukawa Nagisa (Clannad)

You have to make a choice. Either you give up on your soul for the sake of science, or you give up on science to save your soul. In my case, the soul was already in pieces.
- Lloyd Asplund (Code Geass)

Do you understand the meaning behind Nunnaly's smile? She can't see or walk. So there are things in this world that she knows she can't do alone. Her smile... is her only way to show gratitude.
- Lelouch Vi Britannia (Code Geass)

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi. and I'm talking about the original broadcasted first episode: The Adventures of Asahina Mikuru. 22 minutes of "what the hell am I even watching" and then a 30 second introduction of the culprit behind it all.

@Saputrai I think one of the reasons why a lot of people were so dissappointed in the series is precisely because of how good that first episode was.

the Swordland theme kicking in at the end always gives me chills.

there's so many that it will take a long time to list them out;

march comes in like a lion- why? because it establishes itself as the kind of anime it is going to be, slice of life, wholesome and comforting with some mysterious backstory to the main characters that are introduced from the first episode itself. makes us think what must have happened in the past that they live like this. it was such that you were glued to the screen, not a moment where you weren't actively watching it.

anohana- kind of similar to sangatsu

ao haru ride, ao no hako, chihayafuru- kind of similar, both romance and had my 100% attention throughout, very fun. ao haru ride had that intimate shoujo vibe going throughout which pulled me in.

clannad- well i don't need to explain. its clannad. if you've watched it you know.
honey and clover- excellent introduction to characters in the first episode and the kind of anime it was going to be. one of the first animes i watched that had college students. and loved the whole college life and dorm life they showed from the start. very entertaining, this too had my 100% attention throughout.

initial d- this is legit the most thooughly immersive animes i've ever watched. i was aching to keep watching. it was during covid times and i ditched all my online classes to binge and finish this. the first episode had me ABSOLUTELY hooked. i felt terrible for the people who had to wait 1 week to watch the second episode.

demon slayer- it was very masterfully done. the nice atmosphere to tragedy, the stuggle everything. it managed to make us invested in the character's journey.

too many losing heroines- i just remember it being so so fun that i watched the whole anime in one sitting. charming and cute girls, good mc, very funny and entertaining with the backstories being decent enough to make you care a bit.

mushoku tensei- i remember being blown away when i watched the first episode. it had me hooked. i pulled this post of mine from the first ep discussion and it summarizes my feeling well.

nisekoi- just thoroughly entertaining. not a moment when you weren't having fun watching it.

solo levelling- no explanation needed if you've watched it.

angel next door- well i have a sweet spot for romcoms like this so couldn't help it. it just had more impact on me. iwas watching it weekly so it was torturous.

rezero- again no explanation needed but...50 minute first episode. it built up some mystery with the flashbacks. and then the sudden transportation to another world and then the unexplained phenonmenon of "reset" plus the whole eeriness vibe it had going. it was impossible to not get invested. it was a very well done first episode.

tokyo ghoul- no need to explain.

hajime no ippo- makes you invest in ippo's character and wants to make you see how he grows right from first episode.

vinland saga- no need to explain. a very powerful first episode.

attack on titan- no need to explain.

these are all the ones that made me think that i can't wait to watch the next episode. completely pulled me into their own world and had my 100% attention throughout. i can doubly vouch because i've binged 99% of these animes and by binged i mean whole seasons or half cours in one day, that's how interesting they were. didn't think about anything else until i finished them, couldn't stop clicking on next episode.

i'm sure there are others which i've missed. but these are the ones that i really remembered.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.
Feeling half happy, half sad.

It has been mentioned, and though I hate the crap ending, Akame Ga Kill really had a great first Episode. But in overall great emotional depth? Nothing touches "To Your Eternity" this is one of only two Anime' that I have cried at the first episodes. God, what a gut punch. ( Yes, Season 2 was a let down, but Season 1 was GREATNESS.)

I believe this is the only anime that opens up with a latin quote.

The first episode of Cobra is inspired by the short story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, which also inspired Total Recall film, and it's a great way to kick start a series. And I think it's the only anime that opens up with the MC getting hit in the face with an alarm clock.

Full Moon o Sagashite. Everything is against the protagonist Mitsuki, she seems destined to lose the singing auditions and everything with it, but she tries singing anyway. The fact there's still a whole series ahead tells you how that turned out.

I still consider this one of the most iconic idol or shoujo anime openers, to the point I got a wave of nostalgia upon seeing Love Live Superstar open with a similar first episode. That one was even better because I came in all ready to dislike its lead Kanon, but the first few scenes instantly won me over by revealing her to be a more multilayered character than I would have expected from an idol or CGDCT anime.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Season 1)

Bakemonogatari, especially if you include the second episode and do the whole "Hitagi Crab" arc, which is one of my favorite introductory arcs to anime of all time

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

I turned on Urusei Yatsura (2022)'s first episode among a group of friends since we watch the first episode of random anime shows that we wanna show off and it was so good, I immediately started the show

The anime that consistently comes to mind when I think about "the best first episode" is The Aquatope on White Sand.
It's such a great introduction to the story and it's such a whimsical and warm episode with Fuuka just letting herself drift and taking some time off after quiting her idol career. Okinawa is very beautiful, too.

Hmm....

The best first episode is kinda hard thing for me to actually say. Mostly cause not all series are created equal. Some series are fast pace, while others are slow. Some are comedy while others are drama.

I feel like I could give you an answer if you were highly specific about the genre and length of the series. As well as a few other factors. But otherwise, I say a lot of series have damn fine first episodes. But not every series in question is able to live up or go past the first episode.

I'd probably pick Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex. It accomplishes so much in the first episode. It perfectly sets the atmosphere, style and mood, but best of all it gives phenomenal world building. We instantly get a sense of what the world is like and who Section 9 is. Plus it's just such a cool and fun episode with a great story.

Three others that I've seen people mention that I agree with are Cowboy Bebop, Mushishi and Initial D. And just three more I'll add in, Paranoia Agent, Berserk, Rurouni Kenshin.
