Which anime have you shed tears for and why?

Anime evokes a lot of emotions, typically joy, anger, boredom etc. … Sorrow, poignancy or simply the state of being moved (be it as a result of positive or negative events), however, is something that most anime can rarely communicate to me. Personally speaking, eliciting such emotional response requires very high standard. So, imo, for an anime to get the audience resonating with this feeling is extremely difficult — deserving to be call the best if they can. So that brings back the question, which anime have you shed tears for and why?

Violet Evergarden and The Apothecary Diaries are the only 2 anime that have made me shed a tear. One being a love story that has an exceptionally well writen and developed plot. And another having stories that thoroughly explores different aspects of humanity which shows the beauty of life.

Digimon data squad final episode. I was a kid and I was sad that it ended.
Pokemon Lucario movie. Again I was a kid.
Elfen lied. Dog scene had me a bit sad and shocked.
Plastic memories ending.
Angel beats ending.
Demon slayer Mugen train.
Gintama with the Hijikata's sister arc. Never expected such sadness from a comedy anime. Had me crying for days.
A silent voice. Because of the beauty and innocence.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

@FZREMAKE Despite only ever watching an overview video about A Silent Voice, I was also deeply touched by the story it tells. The acting from Tanjiro's VA in the Mugen Train arc for a moment really got me hating on those demon as well.

Clannad After Story.

The music, the animation, the plot and the great character development led to very emotional moments that touched my heart and made me cry. That's why it became my favorite Anime/Game.

@tchitchouan Many of my friends recommended Clannad as well. Have heard many great things about it too though I still haven't watched it yet.

Anime that made me shed some tears 🥲
- Ashita no Nadja
- Black Clover
- My Hero Academia
- Buddy Daddies
- Code Geass
- Dororo
- Hunter x Hunter
- Jujutsu Kaisen
- Demon Slayer
- Fullmetal Alchemist
- Gintama
- JoJo's Bizzare Adventures
- The Apothecary Diaries
- Noragami
- Orange
- Re:zero
- Attack On Titan
- Spy x Family
- Tokyo Revengers
- Versailles no Bara
- Yuu Yuu Hakusho

Anime that made me completely bawl my eyes out 😭
- Blue Exorcist
- Banana Fish
- Digimon Frontier
- Dr. Stone
- Kuro ga Ita Natsu
- Soul Eater
- Sword Art Online
- Vinland Saga

Various reasons, character death, though usually it's more the emotional reaction of the other characters that gets me, maybe something relatable, the characters are in a situation that hits really close to home, most of all what these series share is great character writing that got me to connect to the characters and therefor be able to empathize with them

@DigiCat That's some good taste on anime. Although you've noted that you hate agegap romance, I'd still recommend you to give Violet Evergarden a try again even just a few episodes.

Fairy Tail, even though the author doesn't hide that characters have plot armor blanket, they still find a way to make plot twists poignant. I think I cried every other episodes with this anime.

Spy x Family, Anya and Yor have such touching backstories

WorldEnd

The first minute of the first Episode is from a later part of the story and shows a rather dramatic scene.
Then it goes back to the beginning of the story and while you follow the (romantic) story of the main characters you wonder all the time: When will it happen and what will happen?
It hooked me in completely and after seeing the resolution to the dramatic scene I did shed a few tears.

Normally I am an rather emotionless man who is moved by nothing at all but that scene did.
In watching over 100 days of Anime WorldEnd is in fact the only one I can even remember ever shedding a tear for...

A silent voice, all the bullying scenes made me cry

Kid me cried at Pokemon when Ash let butterfree go
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

- Koi Kaze
- Inuyasha
- Elfen Lied
- Mahoutsukai no Yome
- Happy Sugar Life
- Aku no Hana
- Beatless
- Kodomo no Jikan
- Noragami
- Hanasaku Iroha
- Vinland Saga
- Gakkougurashi!

Basically many of my favorites, not limited to but especially if they involve one or multiple forms of transgressive romance (particularly incestuous, age gap, and interspecies). Those listed were all the biggest ones.

Then there are more minor ones (I can't bother combing through the entire list of different series I've seen and picking them out one by one right now) where tears were for certain elicited in particular instances limited to a passing unexpected moment - a strikingly poignant line of dialogue or reaction, in an isolated scene.

For me
Dragon quest dai og with a wholesome skull captain dying to save his son he raised
Toradora Christmas scene
Angel Beats (probably the music that got me)
Pokemon movie
Demon slayer (Rengoku)
Ect

I rarely cry, but I have a weakness for good music and decent death scenes.
