What are your thoughts about internet age gaps in general?

As the Internet gets older, the age gap grows. I've even seen some communities ask to have an adult only section and to make kids versions of the site.

Many older users call random users too young, but there age isn't even displayed on there profile.
How do they even tell that a user is a kid.

Was this a problem 10-15 years ago on forums as well?
Or has this online age gap always been around?

As far as I know it's always been around I was an annoying kid once, on a different forum 10 years ago, nowadays I see other 12-13 yr olds and think they're annoying kids. It's the circle of life.

Honestly, only the way I type changed through the years. And even though I'm young, I'm quite aware this problem isn't only on online communities.

There is pretty noticeable difference when you go to site that average age is like 10-15 years higher than this site. But usually it is pretty hard to say how old person is. Like can any of you guess my age?

Most people no matter how old sound like 12 year olds online. Ive talked to plenty of people I thought were 12 or 14 at most and they were in their 40s acting like immature little shits and throwing around insults.

This might depend on what language is on case. I can guess age a lot closer when someone types with my home country language rather than when someone types English.

The Internet is just so easily accessed that you have huge age differences. Any kid with a phone or a computer can jump on the internet and search for millions of different websites each with their own communities. It's not that surprising this happens.

alot of the online communitys that i go to have a age requirement

to test they normaly make ya get into vent or raidcall or something
and if you dont sound about 21+ or so you get banned/kicked

ill be honest i dont want to hear lil kids with their high pitch voices making my ears bleed

or their new random lingo they create on a day to day basis

or their " hey im totaly mature as an adult, or hey age dont matter bro" shit

or their drama n shit with justin bever or w/e its called

the older generation on the internet doesnt realy like to talk to the young people
(pre 21)
dont ask questions, just do answers

I remember when I was an annoying Internet kid. It was pretty bad when I think about it, and it makes me more understanding when it comes to the current annoying Internet kids. Still annoying, though.

I don't know about "adult only" sections. Lots of adults are stupid as fuck, and there are some bright youngins around.

When I was young and played w3 I was one of those guys who never speak anything and don't communicate with others.

About "adult only" it is pretty good for mmo's. I mean who the fuck wants to listen someone yelling in ts/skype/mumble in helium voice.

Pretty sure adults only section just means people want to link porn and not get banned. Unless you're going to actually do something to guarantee 18+ it's meaningless and has been since forever.

Most "adults" are immature as fuck, yet think they're somehow better than teenagers just cause they're older and thus deserve to have a section to be among themselves. I've seen this in countless communities.

The only reason my virgin club is 20+ is because here age actually matters, unlike if it were for simple discussion.

We'll be seeing more of it online in the future as the older generations become more computer literate

This. Also many times what happens with underage peeps is that their mothers call them to go to sleep or do their chores and turn off their internet and puff. Time to find a replacement for your raid.

Because socializing is not something old people do?
If anything, old people (pensioners) are more demanding in social interaction than young adults. They just looking for something to keep them occupied, since they had lots of time to spare.

Most people will assume someone's age based on their behavior, how they type, sentence structure, or other criteria. The truth is, you never know most of the time. No one does assuming they don't use a webcam 24/7 or they don't have a real life friend to confirm, and even then the latter is sketchy because it could be a huge fib.

Having a high tolerance for humanity, younger users do not bother me.

No matter what age restriction you set, there will always be trolls and people who disagree with you. Segregating by age will do little IMO. In fact, Stanford-Binet IQ test use "100 * mental age / physical age" as the IQ score. This means a person 2 standard deviations smarter than the population (i.e. top 1 in 40) has a mental age of around 20 at about 15 years old.

If you're really as smart as you think you are, don't use "you're just to young to understand me" as a cop-out. You might in fact be the ignorant one. Just ignore them completely or debate them properly. Let the people around you be the judge and keep an open mind. I did a lot of peer tutoring for gifted students back in the days, many of them will kick the asses of people almost double their age in just about any intellectual pursuit.

The irony is that most of the incompetent older children saw themselves as smarter and more mature than gifted children. I see this kind of thing on the forums and social media on a daily basis. From my subjective observation, majority of the people who bring up ageism in a discussion tends to be the one losing that discussion from an intellectual standpoint.

I disagree with a few people insisting that how "socially accepted" their conveyed ideas are or the frequency of emotional outbreaks are good predictors of age. The former has more to do with personality, and the latter is heavily dependent on personal experiences and the context of the debate (extremely unreliable). Just knowing their writing style and content actually tells you very little objectively about their physical age beyond what is the statistical mean. The large standard deviation makes this prediction extremely prone to errors.

If you're interested in high mental competence, then better predictors would be things like:
1. Extensive vocabulary and language skills.
2. High intensity and sensitivity.
3. High creativity, ability to integrate disparate ideas.
4. Skilled usage of witticism, sarcasm, analogy and metaphors.
5. Strong rational reasoning and mathematics skills.

The irony is, people can only approximate physical age based on the other person's mental age in an anonymous environment. This means someone you find almost impossible to communicate with is likely either much dumber/ignorant than you, or much smarter/knowledgeable. See Downing effect.

If you're just looking for people with similar ideology/competence as you and do not wish to encounter radically different viewpoints, find friends and use the message function. A forum is clearly not designed for you.

TL:DR; Age segregation:
1. does nothing (or very little) to improve content quality.
2. defeats the purpose of free information exchange.
3. cannot be reliably achieved based on current estimation methods.
4. is really mostly used by people as a cop-out.

I'm not sure exactly. I'm 19 now, but when I was 10 and on the internet, I went to sites and forums for people directed at my age range (and WoW) so I wouldn't be able to say.

I will say that at least there seems to be a lot more young adults and adults on forums nowadays than there were a few years ago where I spent more time where adults would be more tempted to be.

I will also say it's 100x more obvious when someone is a kid to me now, but that's just my experience. Shit like getting hotheaded in discussions for no reason, emoticon or exclamation point spamming, meme spam, bandwagoning, blatant insecurities, etc are all really easily identifiable red flags for immaturity, and more often than not, the user just being a kid.
☕ Truth be told, I'm quite proud of my house blend. To attain my flavor and fragrance, I use five different types of coffee beans. ☕

WHY DID I THINK THEY COULD SURVIVE UNATTENDED FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS!!!! ........The last one left has made a vest from the discarded collars, and when I checked my inventory I had a new item "A Gun" with the description (Please, kill me...). *Closes window* I....I don't know if I'm ever going to be the same, I think I need to confide in a friend....Oh, I wonder how my Tamagachi Pet is doing?
I want whatever the fuck you are on.
☕ Truth be told, I'm quite proud of my house blend. To attain my flavor and fragrance, I use five different types of coffee beans. ☕

Upon reading this description, I've concluded through analysis that it relates to the undeniably blue color of that choo choo in the corner. As a source of reference, did you know the sky is also blue? Alas, upon vesting my concerns to this audience of readers, I have discovered that a deep hunger has arisen within my belly which can only be quenched with animal crackers, and a shortened period of R.E.M sleep. Upon that note, have any of you fine chaps encountered by spotted stuffed giraffe companion? I find it most strenuous to drift into the void of slumber without it.

Did I pass the age test?

I play neopets, have I passed the age test?

i actually tried to log into my neopets account a year ago, only to find out that you're denied access if you'd hit the age of 18. i was disappointed, my shoryu would have probably been super rare and worth some money on ebay.

i own several original Digimon Digital Pets and a recent Tamagotchi i picked up out of interest.

Heredity won the thread with clever/snarkyish posts throughout

Rhetoric and topic choice are an easy way to gauge age. For example, what the hell is a neopet?!?!?

Or for example, anyone who posts about the Internet age gap ;-)

You can usually tell if a girl is under 17 if their age is set to be like 300 on profile

I dismantled my tamagachi because the thing malfunctioned and would not shut up even with batteries removed. I think was haunted by the ghost of a tamagachi.

then their policy must have changed some time after they were purchased by nickelodeon, as previously neopets policy was to not let anyone over 18 use their website. accounts that had a birth date that hit 18 would be forcibly 'retired'. it was to keep it for young people. they probably realised older people still used the website.

W.r.t. the topic, many forums provide emoticons and wysiwyg editors. Only this backwards one doesn't :-(

Oh wait, that fell under what you said (mostly) ;-)
