^This. Particularly Gintoki vs. Hosen.

This had some beasty fights, particularly the last one in the benizakura arc and hosen, kagura x tall guy was immense too (I'm terrible with names hah)

Other than that, from reading this thread I want to watch champloo again >> *pulls out dvd boxset*

I haven't seen many.

But the Syaoran vs Syaoran sword fight was pretty damn awesome, to me anyway. Even though most of the time the fights were based on magic rather than sword fighting.

That is interesting question. I think Seirei no Moribito had some of the best human vs. human sword fights. It is fast paced, furious, with glimpses of genuine WTF moments. The animation quality was also incredible so it made the fights flow if that makes sense.

Best sword slaughter for me would be Ninja Scroll toward the end. Jubei vs. all the generic ninja in the anime. Talk about leaving a wake of destruction in your path. I mean characters in anime have left some pretty epic level destruction, but this was 1 relatively normal swordsman vs. a small army that ended in a city literally covered in bodies and blood.

Best Supernatual sword fight off the top of my head I can't think of one.

Well, if we're talking about CHOREOGRAPHY (and camera movements) in sword fights/action anime, then:
- FFAC (cloud & sephiroth) takes the cake. But that's a full motion production, it can't really be compared to traditionally animated anime
excluding that, the ones i've found to be particularly notable are:
- Sword of the stranger (nanashi & rarou)
- Seirei no moribito (now that i've rewatched it a bit, there are some scenes that are indeed astounding)
- Samurai champloo (mugen & jin in their first encounter. mugen & the blind woman. their last fight scenes)
- Naruto (sasuke & hachibi. Honestly, it takes some huge effort/budget to choreograph someone using 8 swords that well)
- Bleach (Byakuya & Muramasa's master guy, before they started pulling out the supermoves/kidou. Shame this was in a filler, i pretty much gave up bleach)
- Black Rock Shooter (though that's not really a sword fight. The anime itself wasn't that great anyway)
- Gintama (Gintoki in benizakura arc. They sorta cheated by drawing sword trajectories instead of actually animating the sword, but gintoki's movements were still pretty well choreographed. I haven't seen gintoki & housen yet though)
- some scenes in FMA. Though quite rare. Greed & Wrath put up a nice one.

Things that don't have notable choreography but people insists that they have great action scenes:
- the rest of naruto & bleach
- rurouni kenshin (series)
- one piece
- sengoku basara
- katanagatari
- gurren lagann

I may have left things out of those lists
Ga Rei Zero has been noted in this thread. So i went to take a quick look through it. I only found two in ep 8 and ep 6 and it didnt really impress (though im missing a few eps).

(edit)
just dropping a note:

supermoves are NOT good action

From Kenshin, Bleach, Berserk, Ninja Scroll, Basilisk, etc. What are some of the greatest sword fighting anime, anime scenes, and anime sword characters you like! Give me why as well, attitude, style of fighting, sword type, strengths and weaknesses.

Ex 1. Rurouni Kenshin - Small, but fast. I love the fact that he observes the stances of his opponents and can almost always predict their fighting style, and usually their first move. He always adapts to his opponent, but never changes his standings on "wanderer who spares their lives".

Ex 2. Guts- From Berserk, Guts, has the " I don't give a shit" attitude. He does what he needs to do to get the job done. I consider him to have a street fighter personality. Finally, his weapon, it's as tall as him and weighs probably the same as him too. Not much of a talker, but as people always say "actions speak louder than words".

Ex 3. Best fighting scene- In my opinion i've never been more on the edge of my seat when I saw Kenshin fighting Shishio, the intensity, the sheer thought of pure hatred, a time when Kenshin was forced to release that piercing manslayer eye stabbing "fuck you" look!!!

Please feel free to expand on these topics and/or create your own. I look forward to you absolute favorite anime experiences.

My personal favorites are...

Saito vs, Kenshin (Rurouni Kenshin) - an epic dojo brawl

Jiguro vs. the King's Spears (Seirei no Moribito) - I know, not swords, but... awesome

Mugen vs. Sara (Samurai Champloo) - speechless; there are no words

the 7 Samurai vs. the Nobuseri (Samurai 7) - sorry... of all the fight scenes, I can't pick just one

Okita Souji and Toshimaru Yoshida (Peacemaker Kurogane) - best hallway fight scene.

That's just to name a few.

Anything in Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal by far. As far as animation of the battle sequences, nothing else comes close for me. Of course, hard to call them sword fights, it's more like Kenshin just slaughtering pigs lol, except at the last bit w/Saito.

I agree Moribito had some awesome fight scenes, but I feel like Balsa's were the best by far and she uses a spear, not a sword.
