Even if it's PAWorks, you gotta give Key kudos because they are pretty notorious.
Anyway, loved the episode, SUB was released Saturday. I didn't really have a problem with the episode nor the insert song/concert scene!

dang that was a good episode.
the animation quality truly is top-notch.

so far, the story seems ok, but there are many confusing aspects of the story
that i guess would later be told in the anime.

and seriously, i think the entire story is a MMORPG.
i mean, you can literally see the numbers when angel hits the bullets.

Seriously great episode!
Lots of action and I really liked the music. As for that the first episode intrigue me and I'm looking forward to see more of it and how it's going to be. I also like the OP & ED very much and the concert song is alright. On anoter good thing is the animatation is top-notch.. and that's is I guess.
On a bad part.. The characters isn't much that interesting and Yuri reminded me of Haruhi, which I'm not that happy. But she is still less annoying then Haruhi so far.. And I think Angel is a character I might ended up liking since.. I dunno. She might have something more than looking like a NPC. Well, that is all the bad part for me.

Looking forward to more ~

On a side note... This series surely can't kill the characters off even though there's lot of blood spilling xD!

I liked the first episode, and Jun Maeda said it will be as tearjerking as the other Key-series, so I will propably like it even more. So far, this is the best series of the season for me.

Also, the 100 hit combo reminded me of Tomoyo's actions on Sunohara. :)

I don't think that Yuri is like Haruhi, at all. Sure, they may look somewhat similar (despite having different hair styles, colour schemes, hair accessories, and uniforms), and they share the fact that they're both high strung, but that's where the similarities end. It's rather lazy to dub every self-assured, capable girl as being similar to someone else, when that's the only trait they actually share.

From the first episode, Yuri is more open to other people's suggestions, and more about interaction with her faction. She carefully takes the time to introduce the protagonist to everyone else, as well as stating their goal, and something short about who they are. When Haruhi introduced Itsuki to the SOS brigade, she did it in a really quick, disinterested way. "This is the SOS brigade. I'm the brigade chief, Haruhi Suzumiya. Those three are members number one, number two, and number three. And incidentally, you're the fourth one. Everyone get along now!".

Yuri founded their faction, I believe, and took the time to listen to everyone's suggestions about their faction's name. Haruhi would not do that. Haruhi is more about herself, and rarely takes other people's suggestions into consideration, unless they benefit her. Haruhi is a selfish little girl who thinks that the world revolves around her, while Yuri seems to be much more realistic and clued in about the world around her. She knows she's dead, and she has a clear goal. Haruhi doesn't have any clear goal, as such. Her goal is horribly vague, and that's the way she intended it to be. 'Have fun with mysterious beings' is a sharp contrast when comparing it to 'take out Tenshi, our enemy'.

Yuri attempts to enlist the protagonist, but doesn't force him to do anything. In fact, she somewhat willfully lets him walk out to Tenshi, knowing full well that it means he'll get attacked. Haruhi forcefully 'abducted' Mikuru from a class, while she was dozing to get her into the club.

Yay! Someone put my exact thoughts into coherent speech.

(I wanted to say something like this but it kept coming out stupid)

I can see where people think Haruhi is like Yuri, and where she isn't.

Despite the way they do things, I think Yuri's like Haruhi a lot. Sure Yuri may be more open to things and doesn't force anyone to do things like Haruhi, but she looks a lot like her, even sounds like her, and has around the same attitude. Their logic I suppose is a lot different though.

I wasn't expecting a lot from this anime, but I really enjoyed the first episode. VERY intriguing and kept my attention. Can't wait for more <3

Quick note: I was going through the episode again yesterday (the Mazui dub, specifically) and I was going to tag when the awesome concert/fight scene started. Made the bookmark exactly where the lights cut for the performance, 18 minutes 30 seconds in. Then I remembered something, rewound about 60 seconds, and saw this line of dialogue:

Yuri: "The operation commences at 18:30"

Either an amazing coincidence or the subbers are geniuses.

Excellent work to whoever caught the frame of the Angel's attack-block, by the way. I thought that the Angels' powers looked vaguely tech-based, but there's solid evidence. Interesting possible implications, as well.

Also, kind of unrelated, but how do you guys know who subs what? Usually I look for something saying "___ subs" or something but either I don't pay attention enough attention or it just wasn't there. How do you guys do it? O_O

Jun Maeda said "The first episode has a performance scene and battle scenes, so there is definitely a good amount of especially interesting moments, but since it is just the first episode it is only just beginning to explain the world’s basic setting, so I think it might be safer to say that the overall appeal of the world of Angel Beats! will properly start off in episode two." in an interview. So I'm sure that we won't be that confused after the second episode.

I wasn't expecting me to like this.

The production quality is pretty good.
I loved the mission/live music performance sequence (better than K-On!'s [sorry!]).

I don't like any of the characters, yet.
I'm intrigued by this world. We know the basics now, but I wonder how far this show can expand on this world.

Great first episode imo; I loved it.

The plot is interesting so far, a bit strange.. Characters seem good, and some were fun. I can see how Yuri reminds people of Haruhi. The similarites are there, but I wouldn't really compare the two. The concert and action was awesome and very well animated. The insert song was very good and I liked the ED song as well.

I'm looking forward to the next episode.

the op and ed are great.
the band in the show is really good... this series seems to be on point musically.
otherwise... 5/10. a little generic for my tastes. i'll give it a few more episodes and see if it improves. the idea is rather interesting, but the delivery is lacking.

edit: i've just started skimming the manga... i actually have high hopes for this show now.

Good start, not great, but good.

This seems to be a very character driven show, and all the characters seem awesome, so it should execute pretty well.

The story, though not much of it so far, was interesting.

And, just the whole atmosphere of the show, was great.
Kind of hard to explain, but it just had a lot of dark undertones....idk like everyone's hiding something?

The Art is nice.
Beautiful bgs and the character designs are gorgeous....except the main character, he looked rather generic.

I'm pretty sure I'll be watching this show, as long as it doesn't fail in the next couple episodes.

Ehhh kind of disappointed :/ I expected MUCH more. Well most of my favorite anime's had a slow start so I'll still stick around to see where this is going. I still don't get a few things. 1. they say if they blend in they disappear, so why is there NPC's?
2. they just did a heist for food tickets.... with guns.... why the fuck do you need to do that? mug a few kids for the tickets, I'm pretty sure that you won't need thousands of food tickets like that
3. wtf is up with "Angel?" why exactly is there one of her and why exactly are they fighting =_= if you say cuz she's trying to stop the SSS then why does she walk to her targets O_o overall she doesn't seem much of a threat knowing you can't die in the first place... I would so play paintballing with bullets if I can't die xD.

4. Where the hell are they getting the guns? O_o

I didn't find this episode to be bad, but it certainly wasn't good by any means. Just really really average. I'm not sure what to think of this show just yet.

The first episode was a bit dull for my tastes. The 'jokes' didn't really come across as such, the show seems to take itself way too seriously for that.

And if Yuri isn't modeled after Haruhi, it's a pretty damn good impression then.

The animation itself didn't really impress me. it looks okay, but I've seen better.

Oh well, we'll see how this develops from here.

Really? 98% of the people in this thread want this anime to have 3d quality, amazing jokes, and something that everyoine likes. Most of the post i have read about this anime is how everything is not perfect. Jesus, start complaining and watch the anime, not everything is negative

after many repeating episode

this is my thinking....

"a very RPG like Introduction episode"(if you play Persona 3 or Final fantasy 7)

Yurippe is not like Haruhi....she is acting that way because she is A LEADER...a leader must be active and never let down his comrades...this way the team never gets bored
and never leave so they never join the NPC...but you will notice her inner problem on other things..(on episode 2 preview)

wow the story is all over the place xD

first a girl with a sniper
then the dead people association
then the main character being "killed" even more times in 1 episode than sakura from bokutasu tenshi dokuro chan :-)

well,i would rate this ep 4/5(7.5/10)...it was good but i would've liked to see a more realistic anime :\

ohwell,looking forward to ep#2 :)

PS:i don't think this will be better than Clannad/Clannad AS or Kanon 2006,sorry :-(,mostly because it's only 13 ep long and it's too surreal
it can be better than Air anyway :-)

This is simple really, people will always find something to complain about with anticipated shows with high expectations. I can kinda understand people pulling out animation errors to try and stop the animator from being lazy, but I can't understand people being completely ignorant. This episode had so much that it was almost overloaded, I could almost use the fact it was a clusterfuck as criticism but I like my episodes packed with content.

Well, let's not pass the hatedom off as completely irrational here. There are certainly some valid flaws that have come up throughout the course of the topic; the dialogue is often empty, the animation is surprisingly weak, and the character designs are generic... but at the same time, it does seem irrational to completely write it off based on that. As you said, if a show has pre-release hype, there will always be people with an aversion to that trying to hate it. But both sides have made some valid points about it.

Also, not to mini-mod here, but let's not just spam up the topic with meaningless posts to try and push this past 26 pages, OK?

I should have really pointed this out but yes, I agree that there are perfectly respectable reasons for a person to be let down by the first episode. My post was aimed at the certain group of people who like to point out the bad (No matter how irrelevant/insignificant) and blatantly ignore the good. These people are rare so it won't make a huge difference overall, and the anime seems to have had a very good start even with the odd complaints.
