Tanaka just seeing the drama coolly unfold like it's a soap opera or something. Also, what a way to end the season, just as he's approaching the boys as they're having their moment.

Also, seems like Hikaru is becoming more human by the day, but I wonder if this means the opposite may end up being true for Yoshiki.

Either way, good thing the doomed yaoi got S2 announced.

Not sure how to feel about this series, obviously it has great animation, atmosphere, etc, but my personal enjoyment was a bit lacking... I liked some of the dramatic scenes, and the mystery of the village's history and all that, but I was also kinda bored a lot of the time, maybe the story moves a little slow like some people said. I did start to care about the characters more as it went on. I don't know, feels like it could get better in season 2, maybe the story just needs more time to unfold.

^ yeah lol, I also noticed a drop (animation-wise) about midway through the series. Sure, it's stil super solid, but not as spectacular and rich of details like in the beginning. Maybe 'Hikaru' ate part of the budget?

What will never drop is Tanaka's appeal, fuckin' legend. However, aside his amusing and meme-worthy shot, the adaptational changes are a different matter - most notably, the "Nounuki-sama fraud" reveal, which was originally at the very end of the volume, right admist the beach scene, serving in fact as a cliffhanger. Not having it where it supposedly belonged in favor of a longer Yoshikaru exchange was quite a letdown and made the ending very anticlimatic. The final episode might be one of the worst ones, in both construction and animation.

Random thoughts:
• The anime is gayer than the manga, Yoshiki is gayer, his daddy too;
• Some changes are debatable and I disagree with the ending's handling, but it's nice to see new fan(art)s;
• They're making a live action (theatre) version as well;
• 10th volume will likely be the last (unless author-san is trolling us), making second season the final one, if they adapt all the remaining material, as they should;
• 7th volume - with Tanagoat on the cover - was just released here last week, my hands and eyes are impatient.

The first pic is really weird. But the second... There just aren't enough shadows. At least Yoshiki's fingers are definitely curled here, clutching the shirt. You can see it in animation when there is movement. The hand even looks a bit 3D. I'm interested in how this scene was drawn.

Big oof. I love the manga so I may be too harsh a critic... but what a shit way to end the season.

The animation was rough, some of the music felt really out of place, and a decent amount of changes were made to the source material. I was coming around to the anime adaptation a little but these last few episodes were not it.

Using IRL footage was a choice... definitely not my choice. lol

This episode was the only one I didn't know from the manga, as I postponed reading it in hopes of experiencing a great anime plot-blind instead.

And it certainly was great! The combination of Rural atmosphere, horror, mystery and BL is just perfect for me, but that alone is of course no free pass to a good show. Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu however, truly makes the most out of it. I love the characters and relationships, with their great depth, the eerie style of the mystery part and the gorgeous scenery. Not to mention the anime was executed perfectly, with many creative, but not over-the-top depictions and great voice acting. It really made the most of being animated and I'm so, so glad I'll get to see another season of it.

10/10 btw :D

These two are even more "mixed" now after this episode, and if lady Kurebayashi's warning is true, then it means shit is gonna get even crazier real soon.
I never thought Doomed Yaoi would be this intense, but I sure feel the doom alright lol. All that catharsis for Yoshiki at the end seemed more like him falling deeper into the abyss.
Overall, I give the show a 6/10.
I get that it's more a vehicle to explore Yoshiki coming to terms with himself, but for me I was far more into the mystery/thriller parts of the show.
The earlier episodes really had me locked in, I hope it comes back for season 2 a little more now that we see Tanaka is finally about to make his move.

In the last 3 episodes, Hikaru doesn't die. Quite the opposite - get his head back with enough thoughts to get feelings of guilt and fear for Yoshiki and other people close to him. Meanwhile, Yoshiki learns more about the dark history of his village. People sacrificed chopped heads and offered it to the local deity with hope it will make their wish come true. However, our shaded exorcist suspects this has nothing to do with apparitions coming out of every hole. Feeling responsible, Hikaru decides to leave the village for good, but Yoshiki convinces him to stay in a tear-jerking season finale.
The first season of Hikaru has been moving slow, mostly introducing characters and their personal issues. Animation pays homage to classic imagery of horror films . Melodic soundtrack accompanies dramatic scenes, occasionally dropping jump scares in a form of loud noise rock instrumentation. Now with Yoshiki and Hikaru reconciled, the story can advance toward solving the mystery of mountain village.

I came here for horror + mystery but the mystery part was really weak and horror was just random creepy drawings, I don't really understand why this anime is highly rated, anyways hopefully S2 will be better.

The worst part was seeing the screen through Yoshiki's bangs.

Without a doubt, a great anime. The second season will surely give us more details about what will happen with that ending.

Yoshiki feels like the embodiment of emotional attachment, the kind we feel towards people we don't want to let go, no matter how badly they've treated us. It's disturbing that, even knowing that his love has died and been replaced by an entity that has taken lives, he decides to stay, delaying the passage of time that should have moved on. He's going to remain obsessed forever.

I really hope that the ending of this anime shows him learning to let go and move on, treasuring the good times they shared. And that Hikaru's monstrous form returns to its true nature. It hurts, but I would say that would be the healthiest ending, and hopefully neither of them will die. Because nothing in this anime is normal, not even having a romance with a corpse.

It saddens me that some people dismissed it just because they assumed it would be BL (which isn't bad at all). Even the anime itself was subtle about Yoshiki's sexuality and feelings, and I hope that in the second season they don't censor that theme or change direction: this was one of the best anime of the season.

What brilliant, beautiful, emotionally potent season finale!

I'm so happy the show is coming back for a second season, because I'm gonna need it after this episode! That scene at the beach was intense! Yoshiki's passionate declaration of love and need for Hikaru touched me deeply, as did the boy's reaction.

Also, I thought the scene with Asako was great! I loved how tense it was. The directing was on point.

I have complicated feelings about the finale...

Both the adaptations strengths and weaknesses are on display here.

The voice acting was phenomenal, I think it was mentioned in making of series that dialogue delivery from this scene was how Yoshiki's VA got his role? I can see why, it was great. And I liked how the anime took time this episode to show Hikaru's growing emotional maturity, both with scene between him and Asako, and by parallel to the EP3 scene with some anime original dialogue. It shows that everyone can grow into somebody that supports and uplifts people close to them through hardships. "Hikaru's" first time seeing the sea was beautifully animated.

On the other hand... some confusing choices were made regarding Tanaka. The anime original scene where he just randomly starts dropping exposition to Takeda about "Nounuki" being made a fake God by the villagers... might just be the worst scene of the show, I physically cringed xD

FYI anime onlies - in the manga instead of quietly sitting by as Yoshiki and "Hikaru" fight and reconcile, Tanaka interrupts their argument with the revelation that "Nounuki-sama" is just something the villagers made up to believe in and not a specific being. It was a realistic way to stop "Hikaru" from going back to the mountain, because it created more questions about "Hikaru's" nature and purpose. Now it cannot be just explained as Nounuki-sama the god on the mountain that needs to be kept there by the ritual, because "Nounuki-sama" doesn't really exist. When that moment happened in the manga I remember being quite shocked and it was actually a cliffhanger for Vol. 5. Exposition from that moment in the manga was instead crammed into this one nonsensical scene between Tanaka and Takeda, and I just don't get it, whyyyyyy???

Also it seems like they (mostly) cut the train ride back, since large parts of Yoshiki's internal monologue from that scene were moved to the argument at the beach? Not sure what they do with that next season. Not sure how they even start the season if the situation between Yoshiki and "Hikaru" deescalated before Tanaka got involved.

Overall - I was happy with the adaptation. I am thrilled about the series getting a season 2. But also, in the meantime, I strongly recommend reading the manga from the beginning. Didn't want to start the manga vs anime debate, but I gotta say, I definitely preferred the manga. The atmospheres the two versions of this story are going for seems to be a bit different, if you tried picking up the manga from the beach scene you might be a bit confused. It's not a 1 to 1 adaptation and there were things both added and cut, so if you're thinking of picking up the manga while waiting for season 2, I strongly recommend starting from chapter 1. This story is a beautiful work of art, and I hope to see more people enthralled by it. See y'all when S2 comes around, or in the manga discussions

INJECT SEASON 2 OF PEAK YAOI IN MY VEINS NOW. Cygames saved their best for last because they were so deep in their directorial bag for this finale oh my days this was incredible. Camera angles, holding certain shots, overlaying real world backgrounds with 2D animation, lighting, cinematography, this was everything I been praising about what they’ve brought to this adaptation from the start. Then you have our gayest and most angsty episode yet, perfect finale.

I LOVE how the two big scenes in this episode are contrasts to ones from earlier in the season. Asako confronting ‘Hikaru’ in the classroom and saying the exact same thing that almost got her killed earlier in the season had me so nervous, like girl why are you getting so confrontational with a supernatural being that can easily kill you. They played with your expectations making you think ‘Hikaru’ would lash out at her, instead, he realizes Asako and the others never got to properly mourn their friend and he reaches out to comfort her, wiping her tears and apologizing. Shows how much he’s grown to understand human emotions and social situations. The fact Asako accepts the new ‘Hikaru’ and doesn’t hate him is big too, showing him he does indeed have a place he belongs.

“No use in forcing her, she’s a girl after all” God, hearing Yoshiki’s gross misogynistic family members made ME feel trapped and I’ve only had to deal with them a few minutes, imagine spending your entire life surrounded by backwards people with outdated views like that.

Hikaru inviting him out to give him a fun time before ultimately trying to leave at the end js a nice play on the earlier episode when Yoshiki tried to kill Hikaru but wanted to give him one last fun day before he did it. Of course, this time it’s just ‘Hikaru’ leaving rather than killing anyone, but in a sense he’d be killing the relationship they had and truly killing off OG Hikaru because he’d be completely gone. Also, could be reading way too deep, but I feel like overlaying the real world mountains and trains in that scene is because they’re two styles that contrast each other, like how Yoshiki and Hikaru don’t really blend in their village because they don’t conform to the villagers’ standards.

“I don’t care if you’re a killer. I’m with you.” Oh he really can’t live without his man, I know that’s right Yoshiki. The headpat too and being on his knees for him. This is insane levels of yearning??? Hello??? There’s still people that will try to deny this is a gay romance show with LGBT themes at its core too lol. This scene is so important because it’s Yoshiki fully accepting that he’s fallen in love with the current ‘Hikaru’ and losing him would hurt just as much as losing OG Hikaru, not just because it’s his appearance, but because he loves this new personality too.

The fact Tanaka is watching this all go on like a damn J drama is killing me as well. I cannot wait for season 2 to see what he’s schemed up. This was an amazing finale!

i agree with what a lot of others are saying about the cliffhanger!

as much as i can understand the final ep seems to be a climax of the building emotional tension,, i'd kinda hoped to see something happen with either tanaka or at leasttt something with hikaru's memories pre-becoming-hikaru.

however the final scene at the ocean was still very well done, keeping the emotional yet slightly disturbing vibe going. a little mixed on how i feel about tanaka being there.

also the episode is gorgeous, and i really liked all the scenes with the irl footage like in the ED.

overall very much looking forward to season 2!

I'm so happy this series was animated. They did a beautiful job with the horror parts and the love scenes of course. Because no one can't deny they don't love each other. Even if they don't kiss or do what couples do, they sure love each other, and they always did. Because Hikarun't feels what Hikaru felt before, and Yoshiki still loves him even if he's something different now.

What an amazing and cinematic finale for this season.

This episode sets an interesting parallel with episode 7. Episode 7 starts in a wat you can see it's going to be Yoshiki's last goodbyes to Monster Hikaru. This time is the opposite, and since from the 1st scene of the episode you can already see Hikaru is saying goodbye not only to Yoshiki, but to this life he got to experienced.

It's confirmed, Asako now knows the real Hikaru is dead. It's hard to hear Monster Hikaru saying Hikaru is just a corpse now :(
Monster Hikaru also brings an interesting point: Yoshiki had to mourn Hikaru's death all alone, maybe things would have gone differently if he had the opportunity to mourn Hikaru's death alongside Asako, Yuki and Maki... Maybe he wouldn't be as miserable (but more on this later). Anyways, at least now Yoshiki has someone else that is also mourning Hikaru's death, and I'm sure that's going to be important to him.

I have no words for the beach scene. It was so well executed. This whole episode was really cinematic, but this scene in particular was amazing. They delievered everything. Watching Yoshiki breaking down while he was hearing Monster Hikaru's decision was harsh, which shows how well the anime portrayed the importance of this discussion between the 2.

We finally understand how Yoshiki sees this Monster Hikaru. Yoshiki doesn't see it as a replacement for his deceased lover, he instead likes Monster Hikaru because he can relate to him. It's revealed Yoshiki feels like he himself is a monster, because he "hides who he truly is". This scene clearly reflects Yoshiki's hardships of accepting his sexual orientation. I really found it interesting how in the scene where Yoshiki tells Monster Hikaru he doesn't need to be "normal", you can see in the background a bunch of couples, straight couples... Yoshiki insists on Hikaru not needing to do the "right thing", because he can relate to that, since in his case, the "right thing" would be for him to be straight, but ever since he accepted this Monster Hikaru, it seems he's more keen on not wanting to follow the pressure the social values of the village has on him.
This is even more symbolic, when you think that Monster Hikaru going back to the mountain can be interpreted as it going back to the closet.
Now that he found a person that he can relate to, Yoshiki doesn't to let that person go, therefore why he says he's being selfish.

I think this scene really showcases what this show really is all about. More than an horror anime, or a BL, this anime is about Yoshiki accepting himself and his sexual orientation. He compares being homossexual ("Monster") as being a murderer/literal monster, so maybe this summer, when Hikaru dies, he will be able to let this idea of being a monster die too, and finally accepts that he is no monster, and just a normal person, that happens to be homossexual.

To end things off, they decide to drop that moment of Tanaka just approaching Yoshiki and Hikaru.
DON'T DO THIS TO ME ANIME! HOW CAN YOU JUST END THE SEASON JUST LIKE THAT? IT'S NOT FAIR!

Thankfully, season 2 is already confirmed! Not that it surprises me, since it seems a lot of love is being poured in this adaptation, and it's also doing quite well, so it's expected this 2nd season. But I think we'll have to wait quite a bit for this new season, IT'S GOING TO BE A HARD WAIT.
Can't believe this 1st season is already over though. What do you mean I won't be getting my weekly dose of The Summer Hikaru Died anymore. I'm still sad I wasn't able to watch this last episode sooner, but life happens I guess.

Overall, I have to say this anime is by far the best anime I have watched from 2025, and is one of my favorite anime ever. Everything about is amazing. The storytelling, the setting, the direction, the OST, the characters, the voice acting, the overall idea of the anime... Simply marvelous. It's such a delight to watch any episode of this anime, not a single one of these 12 episodes was "weak". I must say the best episodes have to be this last one, and episode 7 (my favorite still is episode 7), but the other 10 are also really good.
This anime clearly had an artistic vision in how it should adapt the original material, and they nailed it. Even this episode, the contrast between the scenes of smilling Hikaru, and the terrified Yoshiki, with that growing shadown (that used realistic textures) just shows that the people behind this anime know what they are doing, it was such an amazing scene.
I can't wait to see more of this and how the story will develop from here.

This is getting a clear 10/10 for me. For the quality of this anime, I still believe the high score the anime has still isn't enough to showcase what this anime really deserves. The anime incredibly explores human's nature, including themes like loosing your loved one, mourning that loss and the struggles of accepting yourself, they are not easy subjects, but the anime was able to perfectly develop them, and that makes the experience of watching the anime much better, making it an anime that will make you think and feel, and when that happens you know the anime is good.

It was a pleasure reading everyone's thoughts on each episode, every week. I hope I can see you all in the forums for the 2nd season! Can't wait for it to come out!

@Marinate1016 Hey, I just wanted to say that I read all of your episode reviews as I was watching this anime and really liked all the "doomed yaoi" commentaries 😊 Btw I also really liked when they blended the real world and the anime's art style, I felt like it was the final touch that the creators added to "look out" to the audience to make us feel even more empathy towards Yoshiki and Hikaru and also towards real people who struggle because their environment doesn't accept them simply because they are different from the majority. Sorry if my English is weird, it is not my native language.

Not gonna lie, many reviews and comments scream internalized homophobia but you are not ready for that conversation.

Anyway, absolutely loved The Summer Hikaru Died. It has everything I'm looking for in an anime: good story, well-written characters, good artstyle, interesting themes. I loved the symbolisms and subtext about being queer and trying to fit in society. "Hikaru"'s attempt to explore his own identity spoke right into my heart. I am not queer but that doesn't mean I wasn't able to resonate with the themes and the message of the story. I can only imagine how refreshing it must have been for queer people to see themselves in Yoshiki and "Hikaru".

I finished the anime in 2 days and while I'm glad about this, I lowkey feel sad for not savouring more. Now I can jump into the manga until we get the second season. I cannot wait to see more of my boys!
