What an amazing and cinematic finale for this season.
This episode sets an interesting parallel with episode 7. Episode 7 starts in a wat you can see it's going to be Yoshiki's last goodbyes to Monster Hikaru. This time is the opposite, and since from the 1st scene of the episode you can already see Hikaru is saying goodbye not only to Yoshiki, but to this life he got to experienced.
It's confirmed, Asako now knows the real Hikaru is dead. It's hard to hear Monster Hikaru saying Hikaru is just a corpse now :(
Monster Hikaru also brings an interesting point: Yoshiki had to mourn Hikaru's death all alone, maybe things would have gone differently if he had the opportunity to mourn Hikaru's death alongside Asako, Yuki and Maki... Maybe he wouldn't be as miserable (but more on this later). Anyways, at least now Yoshiki has someone else that is also mourning Hikaru's death, and I'm sure that's going to be important to him.
I have no words for the beach scene. It was so well executed. This whole episode was really cinematic, but this scene in particular was amazing. They delievered everything. Watching Yoshiki breaking down while he was hearing Monster Hikaru's decision was harsh, which shows how well the anime portrayed the importance of this discussion between the 2.
We finally understand how Yoshiki sees this Monster Hikaru. Yoshiki doesn't see it as a replacement for his deceased lover, he instead likes Monster Hikaru because he can relate to him. It's revealed Yoshiki feels like he himself is a monster, because he "hides who he truly is". This scene clearly reflects Yoshiki's hardships of accepting his sexual orientation. I really found it interesting how in the scene where Yoshiki tells Monster Hikaru he doesn't need to be "normal", you can see in the background a bunch of couples, straight couples... Yoshiki insists on Hikaru not needing to do the "right thing", because he can relate to that, since in his case, the "right thing" would be for him to be straight, but ever since he accepted this Monster Hikaru, it seems he's more keen on not wanting to follow the pressure the social values of the village has on him.
This is even more symbolic, when you think that Monster Hikaru going back to the mountain can be interpreted as it going back to the closet.
Now that he found a person that he can relate to, Yoshiki doesn't to let that person go, therefore why he says he's being selfish.
I think this scene really showcases what this show really is all about. More than an horror anime, or a BL, this anime is about Yoshiki accepting himself and his sexual orientation. He compares being homossexual ("Monster") as being a murderer/literal monster, so maybe this summer, when Hikaru dies, he will be able to let this idea of being a monster die too, and finally accepts that he is no monster, and just a normal person, that happens to be homossexual.
To end things off, they decide to drop that moment of Tanaka just approaching Yoshiki and Hikaru.
DON'T DO THIS TO ME ANIME! HOW CAN YOU JUST END THE SEASON JUST LIKE THAT? IT'S NOT FAIR!
Thankfully, season 2 is already confirmed! Not that it surprises me, since it seems a lot of love is being poured in this adaptation, and it's also doing quite well, so it's expected this 2nd season. But I think we'll have to wait quite a bit for this new season, IT'S GOING TO BE A HARD WAIT.
Can't believe this 1st season is already over though. What do you mean I won't be getting my weekly dose of The Summer Hikaru Died anymore. I'm still sad I wasn't able to watch this last episode sooner, but life happens I guess.
Overall, I have to say this anime is by far the best anime I have watched from 2025, and is one of my favorite anime ever. Everything about is amazing. The storytelling, the setting, the direction, the OST, the characters, the voice acting, the overall idea of the anime... Simply marvelous. It's such a delight to watch any episode of this anime, not a single one of these 12 episodes was "weak". I must say the best episodes have to be this last one, and episode 7 (my favorite still is episode 7), but the other 10 are also really good.
This anime clearly had an artistic vision in how it should adapt the original material, and they nailed it. Even this episode, the contrast between the scenes of smilling Hikaru, and the terrified Yoshiki, with that growing shadown (that used realistic textures) just shows that the people behind this anime know what they are doing, it was such an amazing scene.
I can't wait to see more of this and how the story will develop from here.
This is getting a clear 10/10 for me. For the quality of this anime, I still believe the high score the anime has still isn't enough to showcase what this anime really deserves. The anime incredibly explores human's nature, including themes like loosing your loved one, mourning that loss and the struggles of accepting yourself, they are not easy subjects, but the anime was able to perfectly develop them, and that makes the experience of watching the anime much better, making it an anime that will make you think and feel, and when that happens you know the anime is good.
It was a pleasure reading everyone's thoughts on each episode, every week. I hope I can see you all in the forums for the 2nd season! Can't wait for it to come out! |
