Throw down for the birb. Great way to finish up the episode.

Production value high overall for the fight sequences as always.

Happy that the library elf doesn't appear to be evil in depiction.

Keep it up.

I should've seen the rain trick coming, but I was so engrossed in the various battles that it felt like it came completely out of left field. When Frieren broke the barrier, I was so hyped!

That fist fight at the end gave me Vinland Saga vibes. Wish we could've watched all of it. X)

Stark, at the end! XD

I actually wasn't expecting the show to turn out this way. I think I'm in the minority here but I didn't like this arc at all. I didn't expect a show like Frieren to have a tournament arc. It feels very out of place.

As much as I like this arc cause it's got the most action, it has been a while huh and will still be cause there's still the 2nd stage and most probably a 3rd and final stage. Why the sudden change of pace? Of all the challenges they've been through in their journey they've always breezed through it.

I know it’s not the end of the arc yet technically but I figured I’d make a post since this was the end of the first test, it was pretty fun although also very different than the rest of the show up to this point, we’re not longer traveling but seeing more of a tournament arc that you’d see in a shounen anime, I’m not against this tho as I’ve really enjoyed it so far. This first test saw people working together that normally wouldn’t making for interesting teams, lots of different types of magic which we haven’t seen much of up this point which made for some cool battles, and lastly just lots of new characters in general which is a big change since we’ve mainly just been seeing Frieren and her party meeting a few people as they travel.

And the circumstances of the test being that you just need to have the bird with your party completely alive meant that just because we saw some characters lose their battles didn’t mean they were out, I quite liked seeing Denken resort to a good old fashioned fist fight lol, and you also had Wirbel who despite being fooled, got lucky last second. It was also cool seeing Lawine and Kanne win their fight with Richter although it was incredibly predictable from the beginning, in the end it was two against one so once Kanne could actually fight too he was done, I did like his reaction to losing tho, he just accepted defeat lol. And lastly Frieren bursting the bubble they were fighting in was a great scene as well, this also gave us a tease at what this other elf babe is about, I’m not sure about her yet but I’m looking forward to learning more.

And with that we move on to the next test, and poor Stark has been abandoned but he seems to be enjoying his time alone lol.

A totally missed opportunity for one of her teammates to call her a "pervert" for karma satisfaction.

Hilarious brief ending showing Stark saying without Fern around to scold him, he's so happy it's scary. Pretty much highlights once again how toxic Fern x Stark is.

Though the fight between Denken and Freren didnt last to long it was still nice to watch as the animation throughout fights it this show always amazes me. I thought Denken would have had more spells if he thought he could take on Frieren but i guess the ones he did use were quite impressive, the gap in power between Frieren and the large majority of characters is just that big.

The fight with the two girls and Richter was nice and i liked the spells Richter was using though he is over confident in himself. Im glad Denken and his crew got a bird in the end.

Fern revealing some of the spells shes has to Ubel and that land was interesting.

Frieren breaking the barrier was a very nice scene to look at with all the amazing visulas and colors popping off. It was good it was raining so her team mates had a chance against Richter.

I think this episode is the worst Frieren has to offer.

First off the first test of the first-class mage exam is by far my least favorite part. I just don't find most of this test interesting. Then we have the characters of Lawine and Kanne who I just feel are nothing-burger characters with awful powers. I found them annoying on my first watch with the ridiculous fighting they constantly do, and it's still the case on my rewatch.

What bugs me the most about this episode is the fact that Frieren breaks the barrier for Kanne's sake. This is just terrible for Kanne moving on. I would have been fine if Kanne moved forward in the exam by way of Frieren winning just by getting the still, but aiding Kanne unnecessarily does not help her in the future. If she were to become a first-class mage with her lousy ability, she could die if she went north. This is probably the first major instance of bad characterization on Frieren's part. Denken literally asks why Frieren wouldn't help Lawine and Kanne against richter because she believes they would win on their own, then breaks the barrier to aid them (lol). Clearly she didn't have all that faith if she had to help out because it takes literally one spell to completely nerf Kanne. If Kanne gets stumped by having water blocked out, she doesn't deserve to be a first-class mage. Even with the power she possess she doesn't deserve it. Lawine is slightly better but her power is still terrible. Anyway, Lawine and Kanne have to jump Richter to win with Frieren's assistance. Richter gets washed with water which somehow wins them the fight (WTF?).

Instead of getting back up and continuing, he just lays down cause he's coveniently out of mana (he gets up not too long after). I guess whoever wrote this part knew it would be problematic if Richter got back up. If Richter fought the girls and Frieren intervenes, so be it, she wouldn't kill Richter, and in a meta sense, this would just prove that Frieren's words were meaningless. If Frieren doesn't intervene, Richter still has a shot (literally just block the water with your rocks, like wtf is the point of using basic blocking spells when you said it was worthless against physical attacks). I think whoever wrote this realized this and just had to make Richter have no mana since him getting back up to fight would either prove Frieren isn't being sincere about believing in the two girls or Lawine and Kanne are absolute trash and are undeserving of being in this exam from the start.

Other pet peeves:
* Frieren publicly showing her name but the proctors only noticing she is from the hero's party is tedious and a waste of time.
* Same anime trope of just saying something's impossible to be proven wrong immediately after.

Frieren has continued to improve on my rewatch and seems good but this episode just sucks.

Another amazing magic showdown.

First of all, Frieren was just a boss when she ended her enemy with just basic spells, which just shows that Frieren is teaching Fern right when she says she only needs to use basic spells to defeat other magicians.
Then, Kanne and Lawine face off a strong foe, but Frieren helps them a little by breaking the barrier, and letting Kanne use all of her strenght by controling such a mass of water. Funny that when I started wathcing the episode, I noticed that in the opening the text staff was drinking their tea in the rain, which made me wonder if they were breaking the barrier, and that's how they defeated the other party, and it seems that the opening really was foreshadowing that.

Honestly, a darker part of the episode, was when Dendek found the other party with the bird, but that they had lost one of their teammates, which just shows how aggressive this test can be... I really enjoyed how they approached this part.

The look between Fern and Frieren at the end was just priceless! Just shows their strong connection.
Also, WE FINALLY GOT A BIT OF STARK. Right at the end, and honestly, it was so funny to see him act like a child that was left alone without their parents supervision, and just staying late and not having Fern to complain. Married Couple behaviour honestly. And the bartender just saying "It seems like you had it though" THAT WAS SO UNEXPECTEDLY FUNNY. And then they straight up cut to the ending xD

Amazing episode, and the fight scenes were amazing! Sousou no Frieren is back to one of the best episodes again, and I was wondering if they were going to show Stark here and there, between tests, and it seems like that's what's going to be. Maybe next episode we still may get a bit of Fern, Frieren and Stark talking between themselves, since the next exam is only 3 days after (which was one of my doubts: were the 3 exams going to back to back, but no, they do get some rest time, which means Fern will soon be back to make Stark get to bed early again).
Really excited to see how the rest of this arc will go! We are getting to know a lot more characters, and Kanne and Lewine were actually quite interesting after their first appearance at episode 18.

The mage battle is okay, but it's between a bunch of characters we barely know.
Although that describes pretty much this whole anime.
I don't understand why they set up this battle that it could be lethal, and then had every fight become non-lethal. It started out with high stakes, then removed its own stakes. There was no real reason to spare the lives of the competitors, none of them are characters we are likely to see again. Not that I wanted to see a bloodbath, senseless violence would have seemed even more out of place for this show but it can't seem to make up its mind what it wants to be.

The ending of the tournament made absolutely no sense. The entire contest required no skill, as they said in the last episode, finding those birds was a matter of luck. WHY THE FUCK would a contest to decide the strongest mages only depend on luck? That's like saying the guy who wins the most slots at the casino becomes the highest rank Marine!

Oh this thing about "only First Class mages can enter the northern land" If they ever get there- what are the odds that it's just a completely generic fantasy town full of ordinary generic people and not first class mages? WHAT ARE THE ODDS

Amazing episode, one of the best so far, alongside Aura the Guillotine (Episode 9), Privilege of the Young (Episode 14), and this one: The World of Magic (Episode 21). Honestly, the episode starts off really strong, explaining a bit about the immense power of Serie, and delving deeper into Frieren's principles and past. This is something I really enjoy, to be honest.

The best scene, without a doubt, is when Frieren breaks the barrier—absolutely insane. I’d love for Stark to return to the spotlight; I hope he regains it in the upcoming episodes after the first-class mage exam concludes.

Both fights were really well done, continuing the characters' power development. The author keeps masterfully manipulating my feelings and emotions. I don’t know what it is, but Sōsō no Frieren makes me feel an emotion or sentiment two or three times per episode that I can’t even describe—and that’s why I love it so much.

Honestly, 10/10. I hope they keep it up!

To Frieren the greatest thing about Magic is the pursuit of Magic, I think it was this episode that we met the other elf that grants spells. The main thing about this episode was Frieren literally destroying the barrier which to me is fucking badass. I mean get destroyed and then the two other party members which I do heavily doubt that we will see after this episode absolutely clap the shit out of Denken using their rain ability, I mean i guess that's what 1000+ years of mage training will do to someone.

@KENKAIYT agreed with the point about kanne and lawine having it easy with Frieren in their group, but u have to realise that for Frieren to pass this stage they both must be safe, its not out of character, its necessary in this instance.. she is not taking exam to teach random ppl magic lessons

also, it would be same with any characters when Frieren is paired with them.. what made me slide past this is thta this just the 1st stage and there are multiple levels to be passed in order to become a 1st class mage, surely individual abilities well be tested b4 giving "someoen 1st class mage" title

lawine claearly stated in the beginning of the fight that " are u okay with using mana consuming spells so freely" , guss he just didnt anticipate the barrier breaking and went overboard

So, Frieren knows Serie, the elf that created the barrier. And Frieren destroyed it. Well then, we know that Frieren is incredibly powerful. A lot of the other participants are just starting to realise who she is. This episode ends the first stage of the test with Frieren and Fern's groups moving on, as well as four others.

There was no doubt that Frieren would succeed, and Fern's group was able to hide away to wait out the remainder of the first test. I wonder what the second test will entail.

This series continues to be very thoughtful, as both Frieren and Fern are incredibly calm and patient. It feels like they can do nothing wrong (even though they did lose their Stilles). I feel like we're going to head into a more difficult task with the conclusion of the first season coming soon.
