I really appreciate how in the first half of episode 1, the anime shows us an "outsider" view to Shizuka's situation, while Takopi has less impact on Shizuka's life, and we only get a glimpse of what's happening with Shizuka, to then show us the final outcome of everything that was happening, and making us wonder what happened to Shizuka in the day she decided to take her own life. Then in the 2nd half we get more into what was really happening with Shizuka, in the first few days of that week, when Takopi had a more important role in Shizuka's life. This episode we are shown the same, but now of the last days of that week, and we can see what happened to Shizuka after talking to Takopi on that night, and what happened in that 7th day, that was the last drop for Shizuka to decide and take her own life.
As suspected, something really happened to Chappy, and it was all due to Marina. She was evil enough to plan getting "attacked" by Chappy (who was only trying to protect Shizuka), only to get it put down, and leave Shizuka all alone, and then she confronted Shizuka with that the next day, while beating her almost to death. Marina did all this, because she basically wants Shizuka to suffer more than what she's suffering ever since his dad started using Shizuka's mother services, which lead to Marina's mother to get violent with her (both physically and mentally). It's the kind of reasoning a 9 year old would have, in trying to "fix" the marriage of her parents. But I still believe Marina does have a cruel background to her, because her decisions on how to attack Shizuka are ruthless, like getting her dog put down.
I was not expecting Takopi's action to lead to such a drastic outcome. Takopi literally just killed a 9 year child. If we consider that he also ended up helping Shizuka kill herself last episode, Takopi is on a killing spree.
Although getting Marina killed is drastic and not the best option, the truth is that it was relieving to see Shizuka brighten up, seeing how her living hell was put to an end, she now finally sees a light in the end of the tunnel.
Now that Takopi can't go back in time, I wonder if this really is going to be the "real" timeline, and when the anime is called "Takopi's original sin" is a callout to the fact Takopi killed Marina, to be able to bring a smile to Shizuka.
Honestly, I never tought such a cutesy attack from Takopi would end up killing a child, and the fact that even the anime gave that final scene a more satirical tone really helped with the bizarreness of the scene. Because of this, I can't say this episode was as depressing as the 1st one. I suppose Tokepi will end up doing another timeline, so at least Marina faced the consequences of her actions in one timeline (at that point, it was self-defense).
When I thought the anime couldn't get any darker, they decided to throw us that.
We were also shown a bit of Shizuka's mother and, as expected, she completely neglects Shizuka.
I find it curious she said to Shizuka that her dog was just going to her father's house, which made me confuse, since in situations like that the animal is usual put down, and made me even wonder if she said that, because Shizuka's father is also dead (Takopi did ask her where her father lived, but she didn't reply), which would explain why he never contacted her, eventhough it seemed he cared for her (at least from what Shizuka told so far). But I doubt this is the case, and maybe he is still alive and just doesn't care about her too, just like her mother.
This anime really is a piece of amazing art. The storytelling and direction are amazing, and it approaches such dark, yet, important and relevant topics, that are essential for us, the viewers, to reflect about. I can't wait to watch the rest of this anime. And I'm curious to see the role that Azuma is going to take in the anime.
As a side note, it's crazy how the opening is so misleading to the actual content of the anime, such a colorful and upbright opening, to probably one of the darkest (if not the darkest) anime. |
