Ya know, considering the fact that the world is ending in like less than a week or so, why not just do whatever the fuck and rebel against this guy... because seriously, what do you have to lose? Axel at least gets that idea and goes out to finish this whole shit with the Chinese dude in a FUCKING EPIC ASS BATTLE. LIKE WHERE WAS THIS EPICNESS IN THE PAST, I DUNNO, TWELVE EPISODES??? That scene with them falling down the debris? FUCKING KINO HOLY SHIT.

Sure, it’s epic and all, BUT SERIOUSLY HOW THE FUCK DID THIS DUDE AXEL, someone who is FUCKING INJURED BTW, make it out alive compared to the guy who was in perfect condition before the fight? …Whatever man. If the explanation is what was given minutes later, the whole "aLL oF yOu aRe iMmUnE tO hApNa bEcAuSe oF sOmE cOiNcIdEnCe", then yeah, truly whatever man because they finally find this dude Skinner… who, mind you, hasn’t even taken the FUCKING CURE HIMSELF and was in PLAIN FUCKING SIGHT, and now they want us to feel sentimental towards the guy?? Like no man.

And would ya know it, everyone gets a happily ever after and gets to stay alive… all together as Lazarus.

My god bro. Like sure, at its worst, the whole thing’s just a bunch of random fetch quests that don’t make much sense, But even still, it totally blew me away with the music, the pacing (mostly), and the vibe. This show would’ve been way cooler if it just stuck to some gritty army or city war stuff instead of the whole “humans bad, end of the world” thing. But it's too late for that now isn't it, because this is what we ended up with, yet another Watanabe miss.

P.S. Didn't know I had a cameo in this show, the cat falling asleep being me watching this show btw.

Amazing finale here that addressed almost every single concern I had about the series very well, while being thematically and narratively consistent. It’s so trendy and cool to shit on this series and the people doing it often completely misunderstand the entire point of the show. That’s not to say you HAVE to like this type of story or the writing, idc it doesn’t affect me, I loved it, but if you’re gonna shit on something, at least understand where it’s coming from and be intellectually honest. I got my happy ending tho so I won 🤷🏾‍♂️

VERY LONG FINALE ANALYSIS AHEAD, TLDR:I loved this show.

Crazy how I predicted pretty much everything we got here. When I told y’all “growing up is realizing skinner is the good guy” everyone laughed and called me a madman, you’re not laughing now lol. Just like irl, the US government are the bad guys and seeing the shit they tried to do/cover-up would make anyone lose faith in their country and the world. All this to cover up war crimes and violating the Geneva convention while using the excuse “well they’re doing it, so why can’t we” gross.

That’s just the biological weapon aspect of it. Don’t forget the Hundun project which I also accurately called as basically being the anime equivalent of the black widow red room. I’m still confused on Axel’s connection to it, but the Axel v Soryu fight was a nice sendoff from stagelski and mappa. I’m gonna miss the choreography in this series, but more importantly it told me everything I needed to know about the Hundun program and Soryu’s backstory. The shot of he and Axel having one last convo there at the end in the rubble is gorgeous.

1 of 2 issues I did have with this finale is the Lazarus team all being at Schipol when the bio weapon went off, surviving and coming back and yet no one mentioned that in the episode where we saw Skinner at the airport lol. Up there with Hersch not mentioning that she knew skinner earlier as odd choices to make narratively, but oh well.

So sight is a big theme in this series. The end stage of Hapna poisoning is the starry milky eyes condition, but also the main point of the story was skinner trying to get someone else to see everything he’d been through, the good and bad sides of humanity. The Lazarus team did that through their adventures, which critics often called “pointless filler episodes” but this show was never meant to be a straight line shot to skinner, because he’s not the big bad. Humanity is.

Knew this series would end with a very chill conversation with skinner here at the end. Puts up no fight, isn’t aggressive and just hands the cure over. Plus, the team get to stay together and get pardons!! Guess humanity isn’t completely irredeemable, right? This is also consistent with Leland’s desire for the team to stay together after it ended which we got like 5-6 weeks ago.

Now my other issue with this finale is there’s ZERO chance you’re developing and distributing a cure that fast. Logistically, it’s impossible. Millions would’ve died, especially in developing countries in the global south where infrastructure is poor. Really even 30 days would’ve been a massive stretch, but with that short a time frame unless you’re in a massive urban area you’re fucked 😭 but I got my happy ending so whatever. Love the ending score and montage and the memorial to Nobumoto Keiko who wrote Bebop and passed in 2021.

Good ending all things considered. I think axel was undercooked as an MC and Doug never got an episode focusing on his backstory, but it was a fun ride.

So he really was at the homeless camp this whole time lmao, he even flashed back to that EXACT FRAME when we saw him.

Honestly was wondering if he was lying the whole time about the world dying considering how much work it takes to manufacture and distribute a cure to the entire world, but I guess with anime you gotta have suspension of disbelief for some things to work

That was an anti-climactic ending to what was an awful show. So Hopna was made to expose the bioweapon development of the government. And there really was a cure, and only Skinner could figure it out. But there's no way they would've distributed the cure in time to save the first wave of people from dying considering they were less than 24 hours away from the Hopna doomsday.

Why exactly did we have the whole assassin subplot? It feels as though it was there to justify a final boss.

"Somehow" the main cast didn't die, but instead went under a molecular change? Why? Just because? I know why, it was to move the plot forward. And everyone lives happily ever after.

I'm not even sure where to begin with this one. First it has to be the writing, it was so painfully amateurish. It's as if they hired someone who just graduated college to be the head writer, because this show is as subtle as a baseball bat to the back of the head. It's messaging was on the nose, obnoxiously pretentious, and rife with modern messaging. "Humans are the disease", climate change, AI, economic inequality, and more. Not to mention the plot contrivances to help justify the ending. But the most glaring issue is how this desperately wants to be the next Cowboy Bebop. It just lacks the charm, writing, style, music, actual good characters, story, and everything else. You can actually point out the beats that it tried to copy from Bebop. Like the attempted Spike vs Vicious fight at the end, except it didn't have the stakes, set up, or anything else. It doesn't help that the first half of the season felt as if they were meandering with all of their eventual dead leads. This is something that likely needed 13 more episodes, as the ending felt anti-climactic, hollow, and rushed.

Another issue are the characters. Until this last episode, it made no sense why most of them were even there to begin with, as opposed to highly trained military agents or actual detectives. Doug and Leland being the main culprits. Was it just because Leland is rich? And what qualifications does Doug even have? Was it because someone was racist to him once? At least Elaina was a professional hacker, which makes some sense in this near future setting. Axel because he's good at escaping jail? And fighting I guess? My point is that there felt like no justification to bring this group together until the last 5 minutes of the show pulling that reason out of its ass. This group has absolutely nothing on the Bebop crew, that's for sure. They're bland, boring, and poorly developed.

Music is forgettable, the animation was above average, but it doesn't help the terrible plot. And English dub was atrocious.

Overall, this was Watanabe's desperate attempt to try and capture the magic and popularity of his best work, but it fell flat on its face in nearly every way. Time to hang it up, Watanabe.

That was awful. Just a totally stupid show. I regret watching it.

I can't believe they actually did the homeless guy is Skinner thing.

The only redeeming quality was that it had good music. I don't even think the animation was good. It just sucked.

the ending was plain bad. there was literally no point in the "actually you are immune to hapna because of a coiencidence" minutes before finding the cure, why was skinner even hiding and waiting for someone to find him? and the whole world revolves around like 10 people "avg NPC: ahh the world's gonna end in a few days? who cares gotta do my job of construction or being a government's dog for 5 more days" felt like no one except the main cast cared about hapna or skinner even tho they were immune.

so hapna was a bioweapon all along and the cure is a vaccine so the antivaxxers in shambles

and lazarus team name means that they got reborn due to being expose to prototype toxic hapna and mutated their genes to be immune to it eh

natural immunity and vaccination

nice show i like the concept and action enough

I was already predicting that the anime name was leading the show to something about resurrection, but did not see it coming in the way the anime come up so I will finally give a point to the anime, the skinner reason was "good" but I can't see it functional as it seems but everything is so bad about this anime...

first it was the itachi made in china, what was the purpose of this little brat??????????????? what a useless screentime they gave to him...
second and maybe I missed it, so I can be wrong but HOW THE HELL THE BALD GUY DISCOVERED ABOUT ALL OF THIS??? it was the president?
and the thing that pissed me the most was doug... SO HE SUSPECTED SINCE THE THIRD EPISODE BUT DIDNT SAID A THING ABOUT THE MAN THAT LOOKED A LOT LIKE SKINNER IN THE HOMELESS PERSON AREA????????????? This is the same error the anime commited before with the heart pill...

Frustating, this is all I can say about this anime... I was hyped before... now only sorrow came into my mind when I think about lazarus...

Yay Lazarus will live on look for SM Team Lazarus coming soon.
The bane of the original series strikes again!

If they had just thought more about the story they had I think it would have worked better.
And had a sence of urgency like how the world reacted to COVID.

But even with its flaws the series was enjoyable and just makes my top ten of spring 2025.

Wow, the twist came in at the last minute. I knew something had to connect between the espoides, but it probably did half-baked. Along with some feats of the characters, particularly Alex vs. HQ, could be filled in more. And probably be more realistic and expanded a lot. However, the ending is at best alright. Not the best way to end, but it's at least a decent way.

It's unfortunate that how a show with an amazing premise can fall flat. Even with the vaccine, how are you supposed to produce it and distribute worldwide (supposedly within a day), especially with the everyone in complete dismay from knowing they're about to die and mistrust from the people.

Skinner's whole reasoning to his action was kind of lame. "It is really a good thing we found you? Or would it have been better for humanity to have been wiped out" what? Also, what's the point of making the main character immune by genetic? The last fight scene just felt like a filler arc. "Just like Lazarus" they said the name 😮.

I think my expectations were too high, but I didn't expect the ending to miss the target this much.

@17999 My question I put forward was: Why were these people chosen for Lazarus? Why were these people, specifically, tasked with finding the man that has the cure to save humanity? The series did an incredibly poor job explaining and justifying their qualifications. Usually when a team is built, each person has something to bring to the table. What do Leland and Doug offer? Doug's first "big" character moment was him talking about some guy being racist to him once. Which rings even more hollow when, up until now, there have been 17 black Nobel Prize winners.

If his character is meant to be smart, why not make him the strategist of the group? It would've both improved his overall character while also giving him a purpose on the team. Instead, he's just a guy who drives the team around. My comment is meant to both mock the poor writing as well as Doug's underdeveloped character. Leland is just as bad though, if not worse.

So yeah, valid criticisms and questions.

@takkun_ Leland is a member of the Astor family, one of the most powerful old American families, did you forget? His connections end up being vital for when they need to figure out where Skinner went to the hospital to get his heart transplant. Leland also controls drones, is surprisingly tenacious and ends up in the center of the action very often, and is quite intelligent, always speaking up to help figure things out. Doug is pretty much the leader of the group, compiling the reports, constantly informing people of important details, and is the voice of reason. The guy Doug is talking about said that "There will never be a black Einstein.". Einstein won the Nobel prize in physics. A black person has never won the Nobel prize in physics. Doug was likely a science researcher. That's why the guy said what he said. Seems like you misunderstood.

Lazarus had so much potential, the worldbuilding? Or the lack of it? The world’s supposed to be ending in 24 hours and somehow everyone besides the main characters is just living their regular lives?? No panic, no chaos, just business as usual like it’s just another Tuesday. Final episode? Honestly a 5/10 for me. The whole show? Maybe a 7 because of the style and music. But it could’ve been so much more if they just paced it better and actually developed everyone properly. Kinda disappointed, not gonna lie.

@vivi_kia Pretty much everybody had a backstory episode. The point of the show is that the world of Lazarus is filled with people who are totally numb and could care less that the world was ending. That's the point of Skinner doing this in the first place. He wanted to see if people cared enough to want to find him, and we are following some of the very few who do care.

@17999 Not at all, I previously questioned the reason as to why Leland was chosen was possibly because he was rich. The issue is, that's a really shallow reason. His drone work is also unimpressive compared to Eleina's hacking ability, for example. In fact, I think Eleina could've remotely controlled drones with her computer, which would make sense, but would take away from any kind of identity Leland had, at least at the start of the series. It took nearly half the series for Leland's addition to the team to be justified, and it was because of his sister being able to give the team information, not Leland himself. It felt like he was there simply for comedy relief and a more innocent outlook on things. Both also poor reasons for his character's existence.

While I agree Doug is like the leader, he didn't feel like a leader. At times he was more of a punching bag than anything. Hersch took over that role, and Doug was more like a Yes Man. This goes back to his lack of purpose and identity. If he's meant to be intelligent, he should've been given more authority, as well as a strategist role. Or perhaps instead he could've been a genius detective? Either option would have been better for his character. The line continues to say specifically "That it's impossible for people like us to win a Nobel Prize." I think for the line to be more effective, it should've stopped at the Einstein comment. Because the rest of it rings hollow as black people have won the Prize. Sure, it may not be for Physics, but economics and literature are nothing to sneeze at either. Ultimately it's a poor backstory and Doug feels underbaked as a result of the poor writing.

@takkun_ Its not just that he was rich, its that he's a member of one of the most important American aristocratic families. Giving the team connections to things few people in the world had access to. His father was good friends with Abel as well, which pays off later in the show. He's also quite loyal, this being shown when he decides not to sell out the team during the senate hearing. Elaina is a hacker, not a drone pilot. Did you forget the episode where Leland goes off to the cult? The one where he donned the disguise? He's essential in quite a few of the episodes.

Totally disagree, Hersch was a pretty detached presence throughout much of the show, taking awhile to really establish a relationship with everybody (for reasons we see later on) and only really being there to give out the missions. And often off doing her own thing. Doug had a relationship with everyone and was the person always planning out the missions and keeping everybody informed.

Again, the racist guy was specifically saying that no black person will ever win a Nobel prize for physics. That there will never be a brilliant black scientific mind akin to a figure like Einstein. Not that there won't ever be a black person who will ever win a Nobel prize in general. It should be noted that less than 2% of all Nobel prizes have been awarded to black people. I do wish Doug got a backstory episode. But I totally disagree that he felt under baked or unimportant as a character. Everyone in Lazarus respected him and I think he comes across as an effective leader/brains of the group.

@takkun_ It's just ridiculously contrived writing. The REAL reason they're part of Team Lazarus is because of that incident at the airport, where the mutation saved them from dying, resulting in them "rising like Lazarus." Then they just so happened to develop talents or had characteristics that made them complementary in a team setting.

@Gsarthotegga It's a show super openly about Christian themes, are you really surprised?

@takkun_ Its not just that he was rich, its that he's a member of one of the most important American aristocratic families. Giving the team connections to things few people in the world had access to. His father was good friends with Abel as well, which pays off later in the show. He's also quite loyal, this being shown when he decides not to sell out the team during the senate hearing. Elaina is a hacker, not a drone pilot. @17999 Again, that's a poor reason to have him on the team. They should have given him a special skill that sets him apart from the other members, with the rich and well connected aspect being a side trait. Just those traits alone are uncompelling and shallow.

Drones are technology, so it isn't out of the realm of possibly that they can be controlled by a computer 30 years in the future.

It would be hard to forget that episode considering it was pulled straight out of Bebop. Leland felt just as useless then as he does the rest of the show. My point is, being rich and loyal aren't good enough character traits to justify him being on a specialized secret government team leading a man hunt to save humanity.

Completely disagree. Hersch was always a prominent figure to the group, ultimately driving episodes, and by extension the team by giving them, leads, information, and more during meetings. She spoke with authority and the team listened. Doug was at times, ignored by the team, and lacked any real leadership qualities due to how bland he was. Maybe they wanted him to be seen as the leader, but they failed, which leads credence to my criticism of bad writing.

I simply quoted the remainder of the line that was spoken. They could've had him specifically mention physics, but instead had him say "a Nobel Prize". Perhaps it's just poor writing, but I still belive they should've just stopped at the Einstein comment. It would've been just as effective.

If you believe that, then we'll have to agree to disagree. Doug, and a majority of the other characters are all poorly written, bland, boring, and either have weak or non-existent backstories. He could've been a much more substantial character and leader in the hands of better writers.

@takkun_ I don't really know why you're ignoring all the moments where Leland is essential to the missions of many of the episodes, as an active participant, not just because of being an Astor. Having somebody on the team who can open doors that nobody else can open is pretty important in my eyes, but we can disagree. Leland was also an extremely intelligent person. Kid was in college at 16 while being a lazy ass.

Turns out in this show, drones are still piloted by people.

Hersch purposefully distanced herself from the group for much of the show because of the secrets she had. We totally disagree, Doug was the on the ground leader of the group. Doug was constantly giving them leads and information as well during and after the meetings with Hersch. Hersch was often on screen for only a minute or two per episode. Generally her role was to give out the missions and give support behind a desk.

The implication by bringing up Einstein was pretty clear to me. It would be awkward for the racist guy to have said, "Nobel Prize in physics.", they were both university researchers, it would have been obvious to both of them what Nobel prize was being referenced.

Pretty much every character has a backstory episode, each has an opening segment at the beginning of the first 5 episodes talking about their experience with hapna, and other character moments all throughout the show. Feels like we saw two totally different anime my man. But yeah, lets agree to disagree.

I liked it, anyway I need some more time to digest, and clarify my opinion on this show.
And need Japanese dubbing. Just month left for Jap dubbing to be available in my geo location. xD Then I can rewatch it properly.
There were so many naïve approaches presented many times. Axel's fight animetions were awesome. The ending was too fluffy imo.

I would like to thank the Lazarus production team for lowering my average anime score 🙏 I would also like to thank Lazarus for being the first media I hate watched 🙏 I never understood why would anyone allocate time to watch something they dislike, but this season I was bestowed on this waste of a show. The script is terrible, however it is comprehensible so I'm not alienated. And it has cool animation and vibes to keep me hooked. 4/10, just below the mid is a fitting score I believe.

This final episode was the most stupid one, I can't even choose what to nitpick this time.

7/10 for me. Good idea, wocky and rushed execution due to 13 ep. limits. I watched Moonrise earlier this year and Lazarus pretty much had the same issues as it. I found the show alright due to its concepts (the effects of climate change and how it especially harms our most vulnerable, who decides to "play god" and determine if humanity should live on, the dark sides of humanity that cause us to despair, but we shouldn't let it consume us and instead keep fighting for hope and change), and it was nice to have Axel, an orphan who lost everything and everyone, was in-and-out of jail, and even experimented on never lost faith in humanity to tell Skinner that despite his experiences and what goes on around him, he still believes in humans and there'll always be "bright spots" in the "darkness". It was painful seeing Skinner lose himself over the years and deciding to not take the cure as a punishment for what he unleashed on the world. In the end, he was still the same kind-hearted person deep down, he had just lost his way (just dumbing down the whole, y'know, international genocide he wanted to commit out of nihilism here).

I assumed the story of Lazarus was about Axel, and his genes were immune and the cure to the bio wep, but I didn't expect it to conveniently be all 5 of them who all happened to be at the airport at the same time. How did they even make a cure in less than 24 hours and distributed it globally? That's the main gripe I have with the ending. It's lacking an emotional punch for me, probably because it all happened so fast? I didn't really feel any stakes, that "oh my God, they won't make it" feeling. everything more or less went smoothly. Even Axel's fight was in favor the whole time despite being in injured/just out of surgery (and when did that guy get his number to text him the location, anyway?). Honestly, the series could've been the exact same without the subplot of the Hundun victims. I don't remember it really adding anything to the main story, imo, since like I mentioned earlier, Axel wasn't the cure to Hapna, but instead all 5 were immune to the bio wep (somehow..it was never explained). But I guess they needed to explain why Hapna was created to begin with, and "US bad" (simplified) was the way they did it.

I wish we got more character relationship building, 13 episodes definitely wasn't enough. Still glad everyone stayed a team, though. Always a sucker for found family tropes

Well in the end it was ok I guess. It's crazy how they really did find Skinner like 10 episodes ago and just didn't know it, that homeless dude who "looked like" Skinner really was him after all 💀 and aint no way the whole Lazarus team just so happened to be present during the airport incident and only they underwent genetic mutation lol. Also, I get that the series had no time left but realistically there's no way a cure would have been developed and distributed worldwide that quickly, plus there's people out there who would be skeptical of such a rapidly produced vaccine.

I enjoyed this series for what it was but it felt like it was trying to do too much so it feels undercooked. The music, animation, and fight choreography were good but everything else was ok to decent at best. Also, that assassin subplot probably could have been completely removed from the show and nothing would have changed lol. On the bright side at least the team got a happy ending and they get to continue working together. This show wasn't particularly good but I looked forward to tuning in each week.

The military guy who kidnapped Hersch was arrested without much resistance. Too bad there wasn't any gunfight. His reasoning for creating bio weapons was that nobody followed the Geneva Convention? Ok. But if this were real life, he would've gotten away with it. Axel vs the assassin was pretty cool, I guess. But I don't understand why the assassin was so obsessed with Axel. It doesn't seem like both of them were in the same assassin classroom or anything. It felt like he was obsessed with him just for his necklace lol.

Oh wow. The members of the Lazarus were immune to Hapna all along. Cos all of them were at the airport with Skinner at the same time. Wow what a crazy coincidence. I don't think the government recruiting the people who developed immunity to the drug is stupid. But the fact that all of them were some kind of experts and not one of them were regular ass civilians blows my mind. Ig Leland might be the most normal one out of them. Idr anything about Doug.

At least Skinner's reason for creating Hapna is a little less cringe. He basically recycled the bio-weapon he was developing for the military which somehow nobody caught on to for 3 years. Not necessarily because he wanted to play god by saying how humanity was ruining the Earth or something. But it's a little depressing when you realize that this takes place in the same universe as Cowboy Bebop and if you watched it which I'm sure most people here did, the Earth doesn't last very long after the year this show takes place in. So, it all would've been for nothing anyway. It's pretty weird how even leading up to the end of Skinner's deadline we didn't see anything about how people were dealing with the fact. No panic or anything. It's like everyone were continuing their lives as if nothing happened. I still think that Skinner hiding in the homeless camp for all this time was pretty dumb. MFing Doug even noticed him the last time but didn't do anything. The show would've been over right there. This makes the other episodes feel even more like fillers.

All in all, Lazarus wasn't really terrible. It's disappointing. It's pretty obvious that the creators only cared about action and everything else like plot and characters was an afterthought. If I can get the same experience as watching a show just by watching the fighting scenes on YouTube then it's not really a good show. It's a shame cause I'd like to see this type of animation attached to stories with good plot and characters. In the end, I really couldn't get myself to care about any of the characters of the show. The end seems to imply there might be a sequel. But I don't think it'll get one.

In the end, my opinion about the show didn't change much. I feel like if the show were episodic with standalone plots for each episode, it would've been better. Idk if being longer would've saved this show. It felt way longer than it needed to be. Maybe a movie format would've been better. Regardless, if this show did come out in the 90s, people would've hailed it as a masterpiece despite its flaws.

Now, I just wish MAL would list this as airing already so I can put it as completed.

It felt like the show needed more time to further flesh out the characters because I found myself not really caring for any of them besides Axel. I’m unsure if I’m somewhat at fault for having certain expectations of the show when I learned that it was being worked on by the same team that worked on Cowboy Bebop.

Each episode that I watched was a rollercoaster of justification of whether it was good or if I should just drop the show already. The ending left a lot to be desired and made me wish I had just dropped it earlier.
