"A wine made of tears tastes great because there is a hint of salt."
I can't believe how accurate what Barlow said at the beginning of the movie is about the movie itself. It's as if Barlow was the character the producers were hiding behind.

Pretty standard anime movie here , seen one non ghibli movie you’ve seen them all. Doesn’t do anything new or substantial doesn’t have anything profound to say . Plot just kinda happens and then it ends. If you’re a little more emotional you might cry , ending tries it’s best to be a tearjerker.

Feels like a very long episode of violet evergarden without violet .

The lore is good. Character designs . First hour is good. I’d say it’s not a must watch. But if you got a couple hours one night , it’s a nice watch.

Thankfully I didn't cry but I got really melancholic after watching this.

The after credit scene gives me hope that they are still around with the last Renato with relatively normal (by modern real life standard) and more colorful clothes now not just with whites everyday, dyed hair (there's a redhead at the background or maybe she's a half-breed or an outsider), and they're not dying out yet as shown with the young children in the foreground.

8/10 I find it bittersweet but I still I liked it.

Man, this movie is so good!

If I were Maquia I would have been very sad, lived hundreds of years and watched our loved ones leave, damn Maquia must be very sad.

The saddest scene was when Maquia saw the old Ariel, and when Maquia cried, I cried too.

After watching this, I became more aware of the meaning of a mother's love

This movie had me, a grown-ass man, crying so hard my eyes hurt. There are obviously some plot holes, bad time skips, underwhelming subplots, and weak characters but I would definitely recommend this to anyone just for how great the overarching story is.

Same just finished it a few hours ago as well.

Deep respect for this movie, it was very ambitious, and certainly, sometimes it rushed itself too much for its own good, the art surpassed my expectations and the score was lovely, coming to the movie mostly blind had me pleasantly surprised, mainly, thankfully not ship between Aria and Maquia, would have made it too cringy.

I first cried when they buried the dog, since I connected with it deeply, from the memories of when I was doing that myself to my princess, December 2014...

Really enjoyed the direction this gone too, I found Leilia in that red dress looking really smoking hot, wtf, definitely a charming creature, it sucks what happened to her and I was emotionally invested in having her reunite with Medmel, it tore my heart there, when she decides to say farewell, fuck my feels...

I though Ariel was going to die, thank god that didn't happen, also Krim, what an asshole, he kidnapped Maquia for years, for what really?!
That was a plothole for me that I couldn't digest that well.

Wouldnt have minded a 3-hour movie that would have had better pacing to slow down at certain parts of their lives.
Anyway, really emotional conclusion, and I get that blondy half doesn't age much either, still looking the same.

9.2/10 = 9

Need to get this movie OST.

Solid 6/10

I cried a lot towards the end somehow, although there were so many times I just wanted to drop this movie. The pacing was really off and the plot was just all over the place. I kinda wish they developed Ariel more. I can't leave it to my imagination to figure out how he resolved his own internal conflict of emotions with Maquia. In the middle of the anime, I felt really detached from the characters and a bit uncomfortable because of so many unanswered questions that kept accumulating as the end drew nearer.

I liked the lore, the art and animation, the SoL moments we got to see, baby Ariel x Maquia interactions, and the reunion at the end. I'm also a sucker for anime with family themes which is why it's gotten a 6

I just did not care for this movie. At all. The only redeemable part of this is is P.A Works's consistently beautiful artwork. 4/10.

I loved this movie. It had a simple but interesting plot. It showed how a Maquia with a longer lifespan could love her adopted son, Ariel, in a great unique way. Their relationship showed the love between such different people is possible in a very heartwarming way.

I felt sorry for both Leila and Krim. It's despicable and sad to see that forced marriage and consummation, after the destruction of a kingdom or clan, have been done numerous times in our history. This was depicted very well in this movie, and sadly enough, it totally broke Krim. Up to his death, he was sorrowful and full of regret for letting those actions happen to his beloved Leila. It would be satisfying to see the prince and king's death, which are fully deserved, although it's not very relevant to the story.

The movie had a great animation that was quite nice and different from what I have seen. Also, it had some excellent OSTs. It left a great aftertaste. No doubt, this movie deserves a solid 8/9.

PS: I love how all the independent movies (not based on a series) on the top list have fascinating stories. From what I have seen, which are a few now, have extraordinary stories. This is a good example.

Also wtf is up with what Krim stated while cutting Maquia's hair that she's pregnant? Who's the father? Lang? Krim? The shitty royal?

Lastly, Leilia finally met her daughter only to leave her smfh and in the hands of conquerors, like how is she so sure that the conquerors won't be harsh in the royals?

8/10

Don't forget that both Leila and Maquia are members of the clan of Iorph. They would outlive both their adopted son and daughter, respectively, which is quite harsh to live with. Also, the interpretation I got is that Leila chose to be free and ascend instead of living with her daughter, who has a very short life span.

I don't doubt she visited her sometimes, but as I mentioned, it would be very painful to see her grow old while she is still young. She chose her destiny the hard way. That's why she is crying when riding that dragon-thing we see near the end of the movie.

I don't get the high praise this film gets myself. Its beautiful sure, the music works with what is presented but I can't help but feel it tried too hard to make a person cry though it seems to have succeeded with plenty. It was a decent film don't get me wrong but I had a hard time forming a strong enough bond with the main duo to get enough of an emotional connection to really feel anything beyond "so that happened". Pacing didn't work with it, same thing usually happens in works where a large period of time passes like happens here, more screentime needed to let me bond with the characters. Sad things happen just to make the heart twist but it felt forced. Overall decent film giving a 7/10 but no way doesn't the movie deserve a 10 imo.

Could have missed out on the lusting for mother thing as well, I know its anime but c'mon...

Well that was disappointing, and I'm usually a sucker for drama. Imo it would have been much better as two parts or even a trilogy, but tbh I don't know if Okada could write the story convincingly even in that amount of time.

Did anyone else think that the dog dying was sadder than Ariel dying? Just me? Alright...

Goddamn i thought this was overhyped by some people but it really is a masterpiece in my eyes.

I just finished this a few hours ago and I'm slowly getting my mind back. The characters aren't that deep but they're still really well written. The fact that mari okada was able to fit all of them without making someone fall extremely flat is amazing. I haven't really had the best experience with movies as generally I tend to not care about the characters much since I barely know them but seeing Maquia and Ariels journey is just touching af.

I really have no idea what to say anymore it was just able to immerse me in the world and sort of experience it through my screen lmao. It got me really invested at the climax and after that i was just crying lol. I think I've been pent up with a lot of shit and watching this just allowed me to release all of that.

I'm not sure how I heard of this, but had meant to watch it for a while. Went in blind just knowing it had something to do with dragons and knights, so I thought it would be a fantasy adventure, you know, fun stuff. Was not prepared for what was to come. Had to take a short break halfway through to brace myself for what the second half was going to bring because it was so far just watching Maquia suffer in various ways. It didn't go the direction I expected it to, but turned out better and the ending hit me hard. Did not plan to spend tonight crying like a little girl, but here we are. Excellent movie and well worth seeing, but I will probably never watch it again because I don't want to suffer further.

I'd never thought a form of media would make me want to raise a kid after watching it yet here I am.

Such a beautiful show with emotions I haven't quite felt from a show before. I don't know how to describe it other than the feelings that were invoked out of me felt different than other shows that made me emotional. The only other show that I can think of with similar emotions would be Violet Evergarden

While watching this I was thinking how yeah it's pretty good so far, there's plenty of little emotional scenes, but when is the freight train of feels going to hit us? Is this just another movie with some nice visuals and some mere ATTEMPTS at getting us to cry? Sigh... I wanted to really like this, but honestly it's feeling like a 6/10....

...then we get the line that probably got everyone: "I'm sorry.... but your mother's going to break her promise..." and then I was like, oh, there it is. It doesn't match what I consider to be anime's ultimate tear-jerker which is episode 18 of Clannad After Story, but it still hits pretty dang hard, and really is what makes the entire watch worth it.

I have my fair share of issues with the movie as do many others I believe. But no one wants to hear those, and neither would I like to talk about them. What matters is that we were moved emotionally by the end. Perhaps expecting too much ruined it a little for me, but nonetheless I can say I can leave this film feeling mostly satisfied still. I think upon re-watch one day without any lofty expectations, it will be even better.

7/10

Oh and might I add that ""Viator (ウィアートル)" by rionos, with the weaving in the background, was pretty freaking beautiful?

If you like movies with intense emotions you should watch this movie. I am a rigid person and its ending made me cry. Basically, it is story about ancient race - Lorph who doesn't age like a normal human. They live a very long life and weave fibres. One day normal humans of Mezarte kingdom attacks them and captures the women and kill most of them. The movie surrounds around the story of two characters of the movie one is Maquia (main character) and other one is Leile, both are Lorph women. Maquia escapes the invaders and find herself around an infant whose mother was killed. She takes him with herself and decided to grow him. She named him Ariel. Ariel, who is normal human grows like normal human, but her mother is a Lorph. This movie shows you an emotional relationship between a unique mother and son. This part is adorable, emotional and heart aching. Now our side character who is also a Lorph get captured and is force to bear the child of the prince of Mezarte like a slave. While watching, you can feel the pain and torment of her.
It's animation, voice, story was great and its very emotional. Worth watching.

Mother's love is really emotional topic and this anime did deliver that. a couple of shots were really good, my tears were at the edge of my eye but other than the main two characters no other interesting side ones why did you make the commander so handsome and important and do nothing with it, where is the elder, nothing really happened and whats with dragons?

The first storyline is a Final Fantasy Tactics plot about the decline of a kingdom and the elimination of a clan in a last ditch attempt to retain power. Dragons, armies, villages being wiped out, assasination attempts, all that good stuff. Unfortunately, the other half of the movie is about the idolization of single mothers. Meh. There are a thousand movies about that already. Brings down the overall movie. Unusually decent production values for a modern anime movie, with only a couple shots of conspicuously shoddy 3D CGI. English dub is okay.
