Can someone explain what happened between episode 9 and 10?
In episode 9, the guy with the #11 fake tatoo seemed to be a liar and flew away
Then, episode 10 starts with the main characters travelling with this #11 guy, who happens to have a real tatoo, without any further explanation,
and now his story seems to be confirmed and was not a lie about boys used as breeders and all

Am I the only one who got put off by this episode transition, or did I miss something?
They flashback and explain how they started travelling with him after they do so. It's a way for them to pick up the pacing in the story
I feel dumb now
Thank you!

Let's get things clear, the art and animation in this episode wasn't bad, it was jarring. If you had shown this to me in isolation, I would have enjoyed it immensely more, and it would have gotten me intrigued enough to check out the show. However, after 9 episodes of smooth and consistent art and animation, it makes this feel out of place. Some people like consistency, and there is nothing wrong with that. This sudden shift works in something like Cyberpunk, because cyberpunk was always janky with its art and animation from the beginning, which makes episode 6 work really well in that series, for me, it just didn't work here.

The goofy moments really felt out of place for me, yes, we've had comedic moments with some slight exaggeration of facial expressions before, but it was never over the top, and always felt like it stayed within the tone of the series to me, not so here. Outside of that, the rest of the artwork was gorgeous, like I would frame that and hang it on my wall, lol, credit where credit is due, I'm not complaining about the quality here.

That aside, story wise, you can tell they were trying to cram this whole "arc" into one episode, and it suffered for it (but at the same time, I don't blame them for wanting to get past it, and move on to more vital things) That's the reason we got the janky flashback slideshow, and poorly explained setup to this mini adventure, because they simply didn't have time in one episode to fully show how Kiruko and Maru met back up with Jiuichi. Lots of other scenes cut here and there throughout the series, but this is the first one where the cuts are noticeable in the actual storytelling. Again, this had nothing to do with the art or animation, but more with the lack of time available, and the director did a good job with the time he had. They cut the OP, maybe they should have cut the ED too, given themselves a bit of extra time.

The fact people are complaining about their choice of art style during comedic scenes for ONE episode is insane lol. If the art style of comedic scenes changing for a episode or 2 is enough to make you complain and say the whole episode looks bad shows how little people pay attention to detail.

This was the funniest yet most mysterious episode in the whole series. The animation style changed dramatically, but imo the style really suited to this epsiode and it was a nice decision because the flow of animation was so smooth and watching it with those reactions is super fun to watch, plus the way episode ended...with Juichi saying See You! Bye Bye...LOL.

bonus : Gropping scene was amazing af. Looking forward to Robin scene (if it will get adaptated) :>

This episode felt all over the place, but still in an artistic and intentional way, out of control but still in control at the same time; perhaps akin to a jackson pollock painting

I came into to gush about the animation this episode (and story) to find people saying the animation was bad... LOL. Are you people on crack? This is one of the most beautifully animated episodes I have seen this season. And that's with me watching Vinland S2 and Witch from Mercury S2 in addition to this. This is a consistently great looking show and I felt this one was the best looking one so far. The first attack scene at the abandoned school/fortress was incredible looking... Like something I would expect from a high quality theatrical release and not a weekly show.

The cartoon-ish scenes were a stylistic choice. Similar shifts in style happen in the opening and have appeared in various points throughout the season during other comedic scenes. How do you people get 10 episodes into this show and not recognize that at any other point?

We could ask the same thing. Are you on crack or just copying? We could also get on our high horse and claim that you're not being objective and you're watching this thru rose tinted shades and completely ignoring that from a technical point of view that less frames are actually animated compared to previous episodes from the same series and it definitely doesn't hold a candle to other titles from this season, specially not The Witch from Mercury and it's gorgeous fluidly animated 2D mechas.

Regarding the comedic sttyle, you're also objectively wrong. The show has had it's bits of comedical relief, but nothing like this 3 ring circus that could had been written by Rumiko Takahashi and her monkey like exagerated face style.

How do you watch 10 episodes of this and act as if this was always the production benchmark? This is just massive amount of copium and denial.

You okay dude? You sounded like you're crying as you wrote all that nonsense LMAO

Since nobody talked about this. Interesting how the anime portrayed the ending scene with the new kids and Juugo playing with the blocks in such an ominous way compared to the manga. They even put blood on Juugo's face and blocks so my initial reaction was ''oh shit, he better not be a little murder machine'' lol It's either foreshadowing or a bait. Wonder how they'll wrap up with only 3 more eps

What an episode, love the animation in this, one very expressive, heavily reminded me of Trigger style. Yet again this show manages to pull on the heart strings, especially with that final twist.

Edit: Wtf people are complaining about the animation here!? Do you all not know what a style is or smth? The light hearted shots with over expressive animation was just right. The man eater fight is one of the best directed fights. If you think that this episode has bad animation you are delusional

i genuinely liked the art direction for this episode because it makes it stand out more, and also fits with the characters nicely. i mean, we've been getting kind of heavy eps (including this one) and i feel like them playing around with the character models was a smart choice

like, honestly might be my favorite ep just for the art direction alone (and the people who say that its low quality obviously havent seen gurren laggan or literally any other expressive anime that doesn't stick 1 to 1 w character models. you need that distortion to bring life)

There are thousands of animation films made in the last 50 years all around the world to contradict that. In Japanese animation or elsewhere.
Claiming that you need a character with two meters wide mouth and eyes to express anger is just absurd.
"Expressive" animation is not better not more difficult nor requiring a more talented animator. Nor worst, simpler or for less talented animators either.
It's just a difference in style. You like it or not. It fits a story or not.
It's to the viewer to decide on that and obviously, based on the comments here and on Reddit, it's a mixed bag.

These are the clues noted by other watchers:
- The spider man-eater had a pendant attached to its leg that is similar to one Juiichi gave to the mother of Jugo. It is thus assumed that the mother turned after her death into the creature and destroyed the community, since we know from Usami that man-eater are people who died after catching a certain disease. We can assume then that the mother did have this disease.
- The boy seem to have inherited his mother's power but does not control it well since he's too young.

Is there anything else you need to be explained?

But there is no way people think the animation quality dropped for this episode when it was better than average.
I'M SAYING!!! That impact when Kiruko attacked the Hiruko was cold and people are hating on the animation. Not to mention to switch in animation when they were first attacked. It goes to show that people in the anime community are always gonna have a problem with something, especially if it's different.

People who complain about this episode do so because:

  1. The change in animation takes place after 9 episodes of consistent style and quality, distracting the said people and affecting their enjoyment, even though most agree that there are some remarkably animated parts
  2. The direction of this episode is messier and more difficult to understand, as the larger amount of people needing explanation of what's happening shows.

That doesn't mean all the ones who complain hated that episode (I certainly don't), just we enjoyed it less and would have preferred it to remain on the basis of the previous ones (I certainly do).
Why is that so difficult to understand?

Regardless of whatever else could be said about some of the artistic decisions made in this episode, the sections that were just outright slide shows were an absolute embarrassment that just bring the rest of the episode down.

Also, I did not find the Juichi stuff interesting at all, not least because I'm starting to get very bored of how little meaningful progress this show has made in nearly a full cour: there's only so long a show can coast on mysteries, mysteries and more mysteries and I think I've nearly reached my limit with this show doing that.

Unfortunately, both drawing and animation degraded terribly. Really terrible.
I beg to differ, the animation style changed but did not downgrade. Sure the times that the camera is farther away from the characters have lack luster animation but that just adds more to the style. I personally believe this is the most artistic episode as well as one of the greatest directed episodes so far. Just because its different does not make it bad. The main thing that I'm upset about though is how they are skipping a few parts in the manga... They some of them minor but they also just completely skip some of the oddities of Heaven.

In this episode we have Kiruko going out her way to save a kid at the risk of her own life which makes her character great

Ignoring the “bad animation” bait posts I have to say this is definitely my favorite episode of the series (although episode 8 is not to be easily dismissed). Visuals looked amazing and the direction was concise. Most fun I’ve had watching anime in years. I hope the season concludes with a bang, which I’m most certain it will.

The comedy parts are so lame that they hurt the show badly, anyways slightly above average episode, it doesn't matter that the wannabe's are tripping with the "experimental" animation, 6.1/10.

All these dumb takes on how "they ran out of money" and "the animation is bad" is quite funny

you wish your favourite anime is drawn and produced as this single episode was.

you wish your favourite characters move and are as expressive as they are in this episode.

casual anime watchers who know nothing about animation, when it's good and when it's lazy.

Great episode, I definitely did not see that ending coming. This anime really reminds me of Samurai Champloo in a way with each episode exploring new characters that shine and burn out in a singular episode, that's a pretty high compliment mind you. Love the facial expressions, I actually dig how they used slideshows in important moments since it's definitely a stylistic choice.

This episode is directed by Ikarashi Kai (五十嵐 海), who has also been the episodic director for Edgerunner ep6 and Dynazenon ep10. This is basically his personal style of directing.

Btw to those who thought this episode had bad animation, the staff list included some of the most talented key animators for this specific episode, like Yoshinari Kou (吉成 鋼), Araki Ryou (荒木 涼) and Takeuchi Tetsuya (竹内 哲也).
Thanks for explanation! Animation here really seemed off, not generally bad, but just off, not suitable for the story. : ) I think this should be stressed more, like the guest appearance of staff members. : )

I don't dislike the style of direction of this episode but it for sure came out of nowhere, like, legit it felt kinda of place, it defently took more advantage of this being an animatated show xd, but it feels so off in comparison to the rest of the show, it was weird at first but it was ok cus it didn't really break the more serious parts of the episode that just looked like everything before

Also in regards to what heppened in the show, someone said something about "why did Yuichi did that" well its pretty clear, the guy next to him snitched on him by screaming to the top of his lungs

The decision to use different artistic styles in this episode, made it one of the most remarkable so far. And its bittersweet ending, pulling more towards the melancholy side, took me by surprise and was strange... like the whole look of it. I also loved the road trip scenarios.
