Goated ending, this anime would be a minimum of 8.70 if it wasn't for all the people who dropped on the first episode and gave a bad rating.

As a manga reader I knew beforehand what the emotional scene of episode 12 would be, but seeing it animated was still a great experience. All in all, I'm quite happy with the adaption so far and I'm excited for season 2. Reading about other people wondering about the high score and those who were positively surprised by the show was quite entertaining to be honset, because we long-time manga reader knew already how well-written the characters and situations are and what it would lead to: To one of the most satisfying romcoms of recent years, full of angst, heart and fun moments. Rarely has a show captured adolescent romantic development so well.

He is lying to himself like most teens do. Of course he does see her in a sexual way (and the thing is MUTUAL 'cause Anna does the same), but also goes deeper than just that.

The sleeper hit of the season. I dived in expecting nothing special, but it was sooo good.

All those cute moments made me squee in a way that's rare nowadays: it was like the times I first watched romcoms over 20 years ago, before I became frustrated with all the clichés and tropes of the genre.

Okay, so the plot wasn't anything other than your usual boy meets girl, but the characters and their development were well done, and most importantly they managed to avoid a lot of the clichés thanks to the initial setup: no usual cultural festival shenanigans.

Well, I was also susceptible to this kind of thing now, having experienced some romantic setbacks recently, but yeah, this was just a perfect cure for the breakup blues.

I really enjoyed this episode and this entire show. It ended up being one of my favorite shows seasons. I really relate to both ichikawa and Yamada. They are like two wolves inside of me an edgy and awkward one and an airhead that loves tasty food.
I am glad they brought back Ichikawa’s interest of disturbing stuff like murders in this episode to tie it back to how the show started off. Ichikawa has gone through a lot of growth, and that he realized he was just using his interest as an excuse to shield himself. I think it’s sweet that Yamada doesn’t really care when she sees his books. I didn’t like how people over reacted at the beginning with how they treated Ichikawa’s intrusive murder thoughts since a lot of people can get intrusive thoughts and not be bad people. Ichikawa was just a young kid that had a lot of growing to do.
Ichikawa and Yamada’s relationship is so cute all their interactions makes my heart flutter. I am super excited that this show is getting a second season, and cheers for another good romance show where the girl is taller than the guy.

The first couple episodes were kind of annoying because Ichikawa was just observing and commenting, but once they actually started interacting regularly I was hooked. It was a very sweet and funny build of their bond over the course of the show. Yamada is adorable and I appreciated that Ichikawa wasn't a typical lead and full of doubt, it's a fun combination. I'm watching a couple similar shows from this and the previous season that I like, but Boku is the one I felt like I needed to watch as soon as possible when new episodes dropped.

The ending wasn't really a solid place to finish, but since there's definitely going to be another season I can't complain too much.

Ya know what? This is probably my favourite anime that's come out this season. I've been thinking about watching for a while now and didn't expect to like it so much; not to mention bingeing it in one day.

I'm actually very pumped for season 2 next year. Until then, I suppose I'll get caught up on the manga. Very good series overall, 8/10.

the score went from just below a 7 to over an 8, that's gotta be one of the biggest score improvements in recent memory. not that i'm surprised, anyone who stuck through the first few episodes was handsomely rewarded LOL the score for the second season will probably be even higher, since the series consistently improves.

Score is looking more accurate now. 10 for me. I cannot believe how good it ended up being. Masterful skill from the director and musical staff.

This show blows away all others I've seen in quite a while. Yamada has no business being with Ichikawa. But I loved it nonetheless.

hmm, if it's so then Yamada is surely not happy right? her expression is pretty weird i can't understand whether she's shy or mad

Probably, the optics of the situation caught her off guard. Home alone with a boy, and he ends on top of her. If anything, I think her expression reflects. disappointment in herself of being too intrusive. Hence why she offers to show her old photos too.

just on the off-chance that you're still unsure. You nailed it with "disappointment in herself of being too intrusive."

further elaboration that I've posted a bit earlier if you care:
Yamada also grabs one of the magazines with her shoot in it and Kyo immediatly rushes to intervene. I don't think that she's fully seen what she grabbed there and his reaction is a clear indicator that she's been snooping around a bit to much for such a spontanous visit. They have their little moment and we get a squiggly eye shot of yamada that she gets when she's very flustered and a pov shot of hers focusing on Kyos colar bone which is what made her flustered. But neither of them are yet at a point where this could go any further so Yamada resolves the situation by gently pushing him off of her... apologizes for snooping around and Kyo starts spiraling because of what just happened but Yamada taking "some" pictures of the album snaps him out of it and before attempting to leave she promises Kyo to show her her albums next. No harm done everything is fine.

I agree with you about the effort the manga is doing for having the female MC falling in love with the male MC. The characters are really fleshed out and cleverly written enough to undermine classic romcom tropes. The incident you described with Ichikawa on top of Yamada is such an example. In your average romcom, this would lead to the FMC leaving the male MC's room in panic or for another character to barge in and misunderstandings happen. Here instead, the fmc uses the opportunity to take some mementos of her crush (a great gag) and to progress the plot (Ichikawa is indirectly invited to Yamada's house). You don't get that in your average 8/15 romcom.

Glad you liked it as much as I did. For the life of me I could no put a finger on why this story in particular resonates so deeply with me. The characters being fleshed out is absolutely true and I may be going on a limb here (don't know if I use that right) but a femae author writing a story for a male audience such as this brings sooo much depth to every character while still delivering a compelling story for males and females alike. It's great and I couldn't be happier about the second season and the scorebump that this show is rightfully getting.

I also highly recommend anyone to read the manga (the art style is rough in the first few chapters but changes drastically) also please, obviously, support the official release (not out in my country) and for anyone else read it on mangadex since they have also non-canon little specials that are sometimes wholesome and sometimes naughty.

Haha, yeah, I can just imagine Anna's mom lecturing her. Similar to when she meets Ishikawa mom at the school.

also, in terms of her attraction to the mc. I noticed in the manga that they had a shot of the two having history as kids. I wanna say it was way back when Ichkawa got sick and had "hallucinations." And had memories from his youth. Which leads me to believe the reason for Anna's forwardness is rooted in a longggggggggggg game of "Notice me senpai" conflicted by not being too overbearing as she feared in episode eight. Anyway, all in all, idk why people are mad for someone like Anna liking Ichikawa opposites attract after all :3

I've been reading the manga since summer 2019 and I've been collecting the japanese tankoubon since fall of that year. I adore this manga.
A shounen romcom being written by a woman definitely brings a different kind of flavor to the story and the characters' depth. I found some merch in Japan this April which were geared towards male readers (wallscrolls with some risqué art of Yamada) as well as female readers (keychains & can badges with Norio's art) or geared towards both (a calendar). Alas, there was no anime merch out yet.

I think I know what scene you're referring to but I recall it being that she passed him and he turned back and said something like "wow she's huge". I don't recall them properly meeting before being put in the same class and Yamada saying that she looked through Chies yearbook and seeing him also hints at that because otherwise she would for sure mention it at this stage in their relationship.
Regarding the people being mad thing: the term wish fulfillment comes to mind and it does apply to this as well. Sure the author gives plenty of reasons why and how and goes waaaaay past the "I like him because he's nice" but it is still, at it's core, wish fulfillment and people like to bash on that. Everyone is entitled to their oppinion but I love this series for what it is. Also there's a lot of shitposting so some of them are just ragebaiting. It's best to just move along.

Yes, exactly, that's the scene I'm referring to. Good eye! And I agree with you in what you said earlier. In how the author is able to write the story to be captivating even for a male audience. It's refreshing how beautiful the story is while the characters drill deep into the feels. Though not everyone sees it that way, but ehh, I just say let them eat cake.

btw Are you familiar with the authors other works, I was thinking about watching Mitsudomoe.

It started horrible but ended up being very attractive, if this was the end I would be angry because there is no relationship, but they already confirmed the second season, so let's wait for another year.
I hope they develop Yamada's character more and how he started to like Ishikawa. On behalf of Ishikawa, it was because of Yamada's kindness and his attitude
And I liked this.

I don't understand the sudden love for this anime, I found it to be overall cringe and mid.  The first 3 episodes were terrible, was a struggle with myself not to drop after that 3rd episode, Kyou and his emo murder fantasies and Yamada and her ditzy nonsense.  Those 3 boys in their class were even worse with their juvenile pervy discussions.  It got a bit better in Ep 4 (or less bad maybe) as the more annoying personality traits of these characters was smoothed over some (the murder crap just vanishes, gimmick premise confirmed) but for me I was still left with a completely useless male character and a female lead who I am surprised can breathe on her own.  I suppose it was different to see a girl in this type of show forcing meetings with her crush and being super obvious about it so gets caught immediately.  Of course since Kyou is so pathetic he can't imagine what is actually happening and just stares at the evidence with that dumb look on his face.  Our MLC has to be one of my most hated I've encountered in romance and it really made it hard to care about this show.  Even in these male wish fulfillment shows I simply can't fathom why Yamada would go for this guy.

Yamada herself did grow on me a bit more, her stupidity did scale back so the standard shots of her smiles with shiny backgrounds so Kyou can stare at in amazement hit me the viewer just a bit as well.  I still find her to be subpar compared to other FLCs though, animators can make her look as cute as they want but need something behind that.

One of the things I like in these type of shows is the fun that can be had when the supporting characters realize what is going on and this finally happened in the last few eps with Kyou's sister and Yamada's friend and I got much of the enjoyment that I received from these two.  Helped bump up those last few eps into something rather decent.  Problem is it was too late for me to care.  I temporarily smiled seeing them give those two the thumbs up and then basically seeing them get together (i think this show could end now though obviously won't) but then I recall the slog of the first 9eps and then simply shrug.  Think I'll rank this a low 6/10 around Kubo.  That one was even more generic but also didn't have annoying elements like this had so its a wash.

To each his/her own. What you try to describe as generic wasn't at all for me. Taiga Aisaka f.e., while still highly enjoyable, felt as a tsundere more generic than Yamada Anna to me. And as for why Anna would go after Kyo, I'd say the show made it pretty clear in each single episode. He has good qualities, tends to sacrifice himself in order to maintain a peaceful status quo of a group, doesn't approach and judge Anna like other guys do, and so on. Oh, and he's kind of cute with his looks and akwardness, he's basically a shy tsundere. That's why there's also merch geared towards female manga readers of him in Japan like keychains.

What a great ending! Like how lighthearted the ending is in comparison to last week’s episode. It’s a great thing to sit back and watch Kyotaro’s views on life evolve ever since he’s gotten to know Anna. I really like how this addresses his loneliness and channels it through how he reads his morbid books as an armor from all the other students, yet Anna sees this and accepts him for who he is. They’ve essentially become boyfriend and girlfriend without really having to say so. The way he finally just says “thank you” to her and how that was all that needed to be said between the two of them.

What’s even better? Anna is still Anna, and instead of him genuinely getting a bag of shrimp snacks, he still gets the lone hard candy but instead of just scoffing as usual, he thanks her. Damn. Can’t for season 2!

what sealed the deal for this show for me was that they actually went and somehow plausably explained the edgines and insufferable attitude the MC extrudes in the first few episodes, where he comes of as rather unlikeable. In comparison to Kubo-san, where the gimmick is just... supernatural/plot device, this grounds the show a lot and makes it somehow more... real. Relatable.
And I loved it!

PS: I made the mistake to binge the manga before finding out we're getting S2. Oh well. Really good read tho.

Man, what an amazing show this turned out to be. The first couple of episodes were fun but maybe a little rough but once Ichikawa started realizing his feelings and interacting more with Yamada, the show just got better and better.

I really enjoyed how cute and funny their relationship was and its growth throughout the series. Ana is such a best girl, she is so adorkable <3.

I'm going to miss this show, so I'm definitely happy that we're going to have more of it in a few months. 10/10

The sister that appeared more lately is very cute, thay can be a big part of the story afterwards but we have to see... season 2 here we come!
