They added so much useless crap to the first episode. If they'd just stuck to the source material or the manga, it would have been much better. Especially if they'd actually shown him doing anything during the crisis. I get the feeling that this will be absolutely nothing like the original :(

I was so looking forward to this too :(

Oh well, if I try really hard not to think of the original, this might be okay.

Why do they even need to use the otaku concept here? gosh... just makes me so tired.
It was a cool episode and all with the military, but Im constantly getting reminded of his otaku shit. He seems like a decent guy who knows his ways around martial arts and not afraid to kill a monster. But ofc hes an otaku also. How else would you start a story?

I enjoy the concept of modern military vs. a fantasy world & I'm excited to see how they'll go expanding on that. I like how they didn't pussyfoot around and went straight into the action. I was almost starting to think they'd be building up the whole "going across the gate" bit for an episode or two.

Looks great, and again.. Japan, so for the character to show some odd qualities (Being an Otaku) was expected. It's called fan pandering and a shit ton of anime do it. At least in this case, he doesn't seem too out there and is an older guy with his life already kind of set in place. Makes it a bit more interesting versus stuff where we've got your typical High School student involved with military and is some sort of hardcore soldier.

Looking forward to the next eppy.

In a strange way it works perfectly. After all, aren't we all strange and unusual creatures from a foreign land who have a fascination with Japan and Japanese culture? Who better to serve as a guide :-)

Came here for the Gothic loli... only appeared as a cameo... *dissapointed*

The story is great I suppose. Kind of confusing at first, but explained quite well. So the Gate that connects between two worlds. The MC is an otaku who cared more of his hobby than his job. Interesting how the story would go. An otaku, which some people can relate, that save the world from monsters.

I'll keep watching this to see the gothic loli lol. Also an interesting story line, combining military and monsters. Modern and traditional fight style (guns and swords).

Oh I also just realized this is a 24 episodes anime. I'm glad that it wouldn't be too much rushed then. Too much anime is crammed into 12 episodes with lots of skipped content.... *cough cough* Yamada-kun.

You do know that the LN is the original right not the manga but I got to agree even in the LN there where no such scenes.

just pointing it to everyone who might not know: but there actually aren't plot hole for this first episode, specifically there is one that people think is though: "he stubbed a random guy and become a military wtf?!?!1?" he's a frikkin military on-rest, because you know, there are a good chunk of miltaries that are anime-otaku in the world.
yes, i am serious.

anyway i was waiting for an anime like this from a while, i was even proposed to translate the manga in my language from english, but my group decidded it was too much work for something they weren't even interested...

I'm wondering about that I know he was a soldier from the start but why didn't he say it to the woman when she ask who is he plus in the LN and manga he actually showed his ID to the police and help the civilians evacuate so there how can we know about him being a soldier without those factors.

This guy, just sliced the throat of a human from a different world, and didn't even bat an eyelash. Blood splattered all over his chin, and clothes. Apparently that's not a problem for an Otaku that only cares about his hobbies of murder, and waifu loving.

well, i guess that they trained him well when he was a military, because you know, they mention multiple times that he was taking some time off from his work, which was being a member of the JSDF.

But wasn't this before he became apart of the JSDF? I don't know, it just seemed pretty weird that a civilian could instantly adapt to such a situation.

Watch the episode again. Look at the subs when the newspapers are shown: "Offduty SDF official saves civilians..."

Who could that "offduty SDF offical" be? Obviously it's Itami. It seems incredible how so many people didn't notice the fact that he was already part of the military just because they missed that line... I can understand when people don't realize that 'that person' who gave the order to evacuate the civilians was the Japanese Emperor himself, as many people don't know that the Japanense still have their Emperor (and it's easy to miss that they were at the royal palace), but to miss that Itami was just on vacation from the military...

while it may be a harem anime given the characters we've seen in the op, we don't know for sure, and violence is a needed element as the main elements here are "classic fantasy" and "pseudo-realistic military", and i like that, the military part i mean.

This anime is very pushed so far. Things just happened, just cause. And yet once again Maaya is in this anime as well. She is becoming the next kamihanazawa. I don't mind her as much as kamihanazawa, since she's not a one trick pony. The anime seems interesting so far, is this the junketsu no maria for modern warfare?

LOL, at first I thought it was faked, it sort of looked photoshopped in, but a few seconds before when the showed the entire unit, you can see they had flags in front of them, so there should be a flag there.

But that isn't the rising sun flag (the rising sun is the naval flag with the 16 rays). That is the JSDF ground flag which has 8 rays and only dates back to 1954.

So the censor is not only an ass, but an idiot.

As for the need for rays, sort of obvious. Red dot in the middle of a white field, when the wind isn't blowing it would look like the flag of surrender.

Someone asked me to describe this anime, so I said "Evil Lord of the Rings vs. modern day Band of Brothers. They meet through the Star Gate".

Yeah, this anime is really promising and I'm very eager for the next episode. There looks to be several interesting plot lines. I'm betting that the orphan girl will be back, as a cameo if nothing else, but I hope they do something with her. It would be something new from the manga's story (haven't read the novel yet). From some of the previous commentary looks like I'm one of the few manga's fans that actually like this anime.

Yea, I don't get the complains. Most of them either seem to dislike changes just because there are "changes" (though the manga isn't even the source material in the first place), while others are angry that they don't get "edgy" gore with one-dimensional barbaric villainous Roman invaders.

Imagine if they tried to avoid and cut off every scene that involved some sort of gore or brutality in a franchise like Berserk and this is what's left...

No wonder this anime dropped in rating.

well, it actually makes sense, a random military would have been there with a good reason only if he was an otaku(and rest assured i've known a good chunk of otaku militaries), so i don't see a problem with it.

It was okay, I mean it certainly has potential and I like the idea of a war between a modern and a fantasy army, but the MC's constant fixation on events being cancelled and otaku shit throughout the whole invasion was just really jarring and hard to watch. I guess I'll check out the manga, but I'm going to keep my expectation low on this one.

The problem with that definition is it downplays the comedy of this series (which I think is it's main selling point).

So, a comedy with serious overtones, which accurately portrays a modern military, as well as the brutality of war, and a country discovering a "new world" where every fantastical element thought of by man is realized, in an accurate geopolitical context, but while never losing sight that the human touch is most important.

I read some of the light novel and read the manga and I enjoy it, People just love to bitch Like all these peeps OHH why does it have to be an OTAKU like really come on you have no idea how many people in the military that watch anime on a daily biases and buy the goods. A lot of my friend and others from the military always said this "There are 2 things you really do on your free time, Watch porn or watch anime."

This is very similar to Outbreak Company, but this one is a bit more realistic as it uses the warfare more instead of communicating first to the other world people at the start.
