Hello and good evening to you all!! I've been noticing some collection-related threads popping up around the Anime Discussion boards today—stuff like figurine talk and collection flexing. Here, why don't I join in the fun and make a collection-related thread myself? XD So... anyone else on MAL collect art books related to anime/manga? Could be fanbooks, could be concept art books, general art books, maybe even doujin books(?? xD)..... Maybe mention video game art books too if you want, I don't mind... If you collect them, do you mind sharing what art books you have? What's your favorite in your art book collection? What art book do you really want at the moment? People who don't own any art books, what are your thoughts on them? Do you plan on getting one sometime? Aaaaagh I got lots of questions...... in any case, let's talk about art books!!! Me personally, I started collecting some of these sometime two years ago or sometime last year. I like collecting them a lot more than figurines cuz they're usually not as expensive and many of these tend to have cool stuff related the anime, stuff like behind-the-scenes or inspiration or something. I will try to take a picture of my collection sometime soon, but it'll be a while. For now, I'll just list the art books I have below...
I also have a few video game art books, like the Japanese version of the Ace Attorney art book that covers the first four games, the English version of the Legend of Zelda Art & Artifacts, the Japanese version of the Kirby Art & Style Collection (I guess I should've waited two more years so that I could get the upcoming English version, but whatever too late lol), and a Japanese Pokémon Trading Card Game Art Collection book. I know that I've already spent a ton of money already... and yes I do feel bad... but there are some art/guide/fan books I'd love to get if I can find them:
Okay okay okay I think I'm getting out of hand with my answers and such... now, how about you guys?! |

Don't feel bad about buying the things you love! (except if you use your parents's money, lol) I don't usually collect stuff, but I do own a ton of doujinshi. But it's mostly because I want to read them. However I have no plan on reselling them after reading, lol. I owned a few physical copy of manga (Owari no Seraph, Soul Eater, localized). I also have two figurines (Law and Todoroki). And a ton of merchandise (such as aclyric stands, keychains, clear files). Also some T-shirts (Gintoki, Sadaharu, and three Bakugou, a Law jacket), and Eren and Law small pillows (not the lewd one!). You can click on the link in my signature to see some of my doujinshi collection. |

MercuryLamp_ said: I love anime and manga art books! They give you tonnes of info on the creative process behind any title, what with them detailing all visual aspects of it, from something as simple as a character's outfit to whole sceneries and indoor spaces. I reckon Studio Ghibli art books are the ones I like most, cause well, Studio Ghibli is my favourite thing of anime of all time. I love the detail in Ghibli films, it's really worth pausing and perusing each different location in each film, the many objects decorating each room, shop and any indoor space, the design of the furniture, everything! The Ghibli animators are masters when it comes to decorating a room with the nicest-looking things. As for any other titles or even franchises, I have some slight interest in getting art books for some of my favourite titles, but eh, it's not really something that I feel too strongly about so I can't be bothered getting them. Hahaha I totally agree! The creators' comments on their work and the initial concepts (either in terms of art or ideas) usually intrigue me the most ♥ I only have the Spirited Away artbook when it comes to Studio Ghibli artbooks, but it's quite a fascinating read. All of its featured art are beautiful and I like the thoughts and remarks and art and just everything that was put into the whole book as a whole... |

I have a few, but mostly just stuff I find used at this one shop me and my friend go to since they're pretty cheap. As of right now I have two from Martian Successor Nadesico, and ones from Zeta Gundam, Gundam Wing, Zegapain, and the Mass Effect trilogy. I also have the Super Robot Wars J Perfect Bible, which is more or less a guidebook for the game, but also includes lineart and such of the original characters and machines. As for manga I have a few volumes of assorted things. I have it all listed out in my bio, but just to list the series I own stuff from that's Gundam SEED Astray, Gundam 00F, Gundam Wing: Glory of the Losers, Star Wars Lost Stars, Alita Battle Angel, Kingdom Hearts II, Getter Robo Devolution, Komi Can't Communicate, and Konosuba. I also have some soundtracks, Blu-rays, and DVDS, as well as A LOT of gunpla, and anime-related games, but I don't wanna take up any more space in the thread so you can check my bio and MFC page if you wanna see the rest of the stuff. |

I'm more into collecting anime ad manga series (and comics and books) than artbooks. The only thing similar to an artbook that I have isn't manga related - it's H.R. Gigers Necronomicon I & II. It's great, but it cost me 100 bucks and I could have bought like 12 volumes of manga with that money :>. In any case, here are some recent photographs of my collection of non-artbooks if somebody cares. I tried to do it with as few photos as possible so there aren't any close-ups: Left is Western comics and Vagabond, Right are my Tezuka, Tanigushi & Asano collections as well as other manga series. Various more manga series ranging from Banana Fish to Lone Wolf and Cub. Also while you can't see it, there is a second row on every shelf behind the first one, that's all my disney paperbacks from when I was a kid. Left has my anime collection and a few other DVDs. Right has Dragon Ball, Punpun, Gundam Origin and various other manga and western comics. This is not anime related, it's just the bulk of my literature collection (fantasy and sci-fi to the right, misc. literature to the right), but I thought I'd include it for good measure. |
I probably regret this post by now. |

My old college had a whole collection of official Studio Ghibli art books that I would spend ages pouring over, but sadly wasn't allowed to keep. I did recently pick up The FLCL Archives book from Forbidden Planet though, which is fantastic. I don't really like to buy merchandise, but art books are my one exception. Edit: Forgot about it, but I've also got the Hyrule Historia and an art book that came with a special edition copy of BlazBlue Chronophantasma Extend. I don't even really care about the game, I just wanted the book. |

The majority of this is Japanese text describing every single manga, accompanied by lots and lots of illustrations. There's also scans of magazine articles, and a section of promotional images showcasing every one of their anime (except Kobato, which aired the year this book was published). I also bought a couple of Monogatari Series Heroine Books, but I should have paid more attention to Japanese reviews. The Tsubasa Hanekawa book really is as bad as they say. Nice thread! For official one, I have: 1. Honeyworks artbooks, called Honey Collection volumes 01, 03 and 04 because I love the artist, Yamako's art style. 2. The Idolmaster SideM 2nd Anniversary Book Other than that I mostly have fan-made books, mostly manga doujinshis. For fan artbook, I have this artbook called "Key Collection" by the artist Kitsuneco. It's an artbook of series by Key from Kanon to Charlotte. The other doujinshis are several fan made manga of my OTP, Naruto and Hinata from Naruto LOL. I really want to collect more, but I have a resolution to save and not buy anime/idol goods this year and I have been successful so far (and the year is ending!). I also collected several seiyuu magazines that features my favorite seiyuu, Asakura Momo, mainly Seiyuu Animedia and Seiyuu Grandprix, but also B.L.T Voice. I also collect all her photobooks (there are 3 books now). And some other seiyuu photobooks. I think my favorite one is Honey Collection 01, I just love Yamako's art and that one has my favorite characters. I plan to buy more Yamako things and definitely planning to buy whenever Asakura Momo release a new photobook. I want to retire collecting seiyuu magazines though, since it's so expensive and I'm not always interested in all the seiyuu featured in them. |

Time to bump this again ★ I recently bought this cool manga drawing book written by Hisashi Kagawa and Yoshihiko Umakoshi. Normally this kind of book doesn't really count as an artbook, but Drawing Fantastic Female Fighters comes with ACTUAL CONCEPT ART for two shows from the Pretty Cure franchise! Specifically Fresh PreCure and HeartCatch PreCure—the inclusion of the latter is particularly surprising and exciting for me since I loved the first episode and the character design for that show (as well as Ojamajo Doremi, another Toei franchise with the same character), and I'm sure many will be excited too since HeartCatch is apparently the most popular and critically praised series in the franchise. I still need to continue watching this show... Warning: THIS BOOK CONTAINS SOME HUGE SPOILERS FOR BOTH SHOWS IN QUESTION! HOLY SHIT THEY ACTUALLY CALLED IT PRETTY CURE AND NOT FRICKIN GLITTER FORCE THIS IS AMAZING Apparently this book is actually a Japanese book translated into English... ...well, that explains how there's two anime veterans here and why the whole book is so zetta good at being informative lol But yeah, anyone still collect artbooks around here? The first is this book by Arina Tanemura, but it doesn't actually count as an artbook as it's more of a "how-to" book. Still very nice if you're a fellow Tanemura fan (*cough cough* @Chiibi) as it gives some insight into how she makes illustrations! ♪ The second is this artbook the popular shoujo magazine Nakayoshi made for their 65th anniversary! For fellow shoujo (and/or those who love most of what Nakayoshi has serialized over the years) fans, this sure is a delightful book to view!! It's a chronological artbook that starts with manga that serialized as early as what seems to be the mid 50s~60s all the way to current day. It featured several favorites like Naoko Takeuchi and CLAMP (aside from the obvious, they also featured Magic Knight Rayearth a bit, which is surprising imo considering most people don't know about that one), but surprisingly enough they showcased somewhat more obscure ones that I didn't even know... as well as Natsumi Ando and a picture from her work Kitchen Princess ♥ |

Oh I LOVE her art style and character design soooo much!!! If you ever saw her manga, her drawing is so detail especially in the hair part. As someone who also draw (just as a hobby) sometimes it's like a role model for me (I even copy one or two of her works haha) ^_^ Arina Tanemura's art style really is something; it's as amazingly detailed as some of the surprisingly really unique and in-depth plots she comes up with (seriously, I went into Full Moon thinking it would be some rip-off of Cyber Idol Mink and Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne as some rip-off of Saint Tail... and yet they both ended up being very different and a lot more ambitious than both works from Megumi Tachikawa!). I'd seriously love to read more of her work, she honestly needs to have more than 3 art books published—excluding that small book she released a few years ago that shows you how she drew one illustration. Her art style is literally the only reason I'd ever consider reading the recently released manga adaptation of Frozen 2. |

Particularly the hairrrr (okay this makes me looks like a hair maniac lol but can't be helped since they are very beautiful) like Shinshi Doumei Cross and of course Full Moon and the others too O///O Sorry I didn't notice the small book post. I'm not up-to-date with her official creations and released art works but glad to see a fellow fan! :D |
𝑇𝐼𝑃𝑆 𝐼𝑁 𝐺𝐼𝑁𝑇𝐴𝑀𝐴 - NOT your usual shounen anime - Pure comedy? DEAD WRONG - Treat Gintama as SoL/weekly sitcom especially earlier seasons - Ep 1 & 2 are for manga readers - BIG patience for its 'slow' start |

No need to apologize, I'm actually a relatively new fan of Tanemura compared to you so in a way I'm not exactly up-to-date with all of her works either. Definitely nice to see a fellow fan around here too. XDFario-P said: tinker3bellz1 said: I don't collect art book but how I wish there's a book full of the author Tanemura Arina's drawing!
