From the MAL image for this show, I would have never guessed Hampnie was only a supporting character. That kind of sucks, his character was rather interesting. Also, this feels a bit too early for something like this....wonder how the rest will play out, and I hope to find out if he really was immortal or if it was just a plot hole...

That was just sad and then happy and then sad :(

I almost cried, I like Hampnie as a character. I think he is really an immortal it's just that GOD granted his another wish to die as a happy man :) I wish he could have stayed more longer though.

I wish I can hug Ai, I feel so sorry for her.

The ending part was beautiful, the song was beautiful, the line "If God is the one who abandoned this world, then I'll be the one to save it" was epic!!!

Let's see what's going to happen now :D

This episode got me hooked completely.

That ending where she cries loudly with the chorus being sung.

It was a said ending and a happy one.

I was also spoiled today that Hampnie died so I was so eager to watch this.
I like him so much. This is so sad. And Ai burying his father.. ;A;

Now, the question is why did he die?

His wish was granted. He didn't just want to die. He wanted to die happy with his family and friends beside him. Thats why he died.

Really liked this episode, looks like Hambert's theory about God is correct judging by the way he died after the criteria for his wish was met. I did really like his character and i think they ended his arc in a perfect way. Nice for an emotional moment to have an impact on me this early in a series.

While i do really like the series so far, I am curious as to what it is actually trying to say about this world without (or still with?) god, It's not really clear yet.

Totally overwhelmed and greatly confused. Guess his immortality was cancelled due to his wish being full filled which makes no sense but ok.

Not sure if i should drop the show on good terms or continue...

So much for the immortality he had...he was shot, tortured, he blew himself up but he died because the "wish" he wanted came true? I would prefer if he stayed alive and immortal.

Anyway he was the reason why i decided to continue watching this instead of dropping it not so sure now. He's too cool i wish he was the main instead of the loli girl.

...It's part of the show - in fact, it's got a lot of symbolism and even though I LOVED Ai's father, his death was vital for the show. Sure he went through physical pain and all that, but his wish and happiness were FAR GREATER and more POWERFUL than all that torturing he went through. His wish was so strong (y'know, "I don't want to be the last human on earth; I want to die and have people loving me and crying for me" whole thing) that when it finally came true, he was ready to leave the world. He was ready to die months ago - he just wanted to meet his wife one last time but met his daughter instead.

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you to NOT drop this show just because her father died.

So much for being immortal, huh? This anime has some serious explaining to do imo. Surely if all it took for him to die was happiness, he would've died back when he was with Hana or Alfa (whatever you want to call her). I haven't seen the rest yet, but that's just fucked up... So basically the immortal guy died and came back dead to die again and be buried... Nice

tbh i like the whole 'god granting wishes in a misguided way' (or perhaps the problem lies in the people instead of the god?) theme this series brings up, but at the same time the way some things are carried out feels cheap. this episode was pretty much just a random overly evil guy showing up and then a forced tearjerker

I think this is an excellent example of a big emotional moment that suffered due to the build up. It is a good idea to have a big reveal or a shocking moment during or before an emotional scene, but that should never detract from the scene, which is what happened here.

This might not have affected some of the audience, but by looking through the responses above i gather that the death scene was not well explained, causing the audience including myself to stay hung up on death of an immortal. The anime did give you enough information for you to make a educated guess as to why he died, but figuring that out severely detracted from the emotional moments of 'father-daughter day' and the burial scene; moreover, Ai was half explaining that he came back as a deceased during these scenes, giving the audience other things to think about besides touching moments.

This doesn't mean i did not feel an emotional tug, because the animation and music came together well for the burial scene. However, to me it felt awkward because I was not immersed into the story. Ai's crying felt awkward as well, but if the build up had focused my attention on these scenes and provided proper immersion I probably would have been brought to tears.

This of course is just one opinion.
But that's just one opinion.

When Ai's father died, I got really scared 'cause I thought: "Did I just watch the last episode by mistake?". Then I rushed here just to be conforted by people talking about his death XD.
Anyway, in the end Humbert was a good guy, and all that he did had a reason (and a damn good one).
He just wanted to find his wife and die happily, but insted he found his daughter and, well, he was so filled with happiness that he was free to go.
The saddest thing is that it was Ai who burried him... Ok, he needed a Hakamori to burry him so he could die, but couldn't it have been the other Hakamori, the purple haired one?...

Seems like they really butchered a lot of things from the manga since this was like 30 chapters in 3 eps.The censoring hurts a lot and some of things were missing.
Would've been great if this was like it's manga version, although I have not read the novel,It feels like something was missing in the anime......probably the insanity and dark tone the manga had.Would be great if more chaps get translated,I guess leaving out the torture scenes and censoring was expected but still.....

Great episode. That was really nice of him to stay with Ai for a little while and give her some memories with her father. I thought the Huntsman was gonna be the father but I guess not. Really sad that AI had to bury her parents. But that's the way it should be. The children should bury their parents and not the other way around. I wonder where this show will head next. I don't know where it can go. It kinda felt like it ended. Really great episode.

So Hambart was looking for Hana and a way to die.
Well, he found Hana's daughter and also a way to die happy. (T_T)
You will be missed Hambart! Or Kizuna Astin.

Lol, he just kicked Ai off a bridge.
Hooray, Julie and Scar appeared.
Ai finds out the secret of the village and she fights.
As of now, Ai wants to save the world.

Remember he explained his theory? God answered humans' most common wish, thus making them unable to die. Then when they wished to die he gave them a way to do it.

When Hambart got strong on the fated Sunday he wished that it'd last forever - thus he gained immortality. Later he wished to be able to die happy, leaving beloved ones behind. So when he was overjoyed by the news of his daughter he fulfilled the criteria, thus he was allowed to die.

Seems like God just finally decided to answer prayers.

Wow. That was insanely fucking intense.

So it turns out he actually was the father. I bet he was killed so many times that his own memories of her got a bit hazy, that's why he didn't immediately put the pieces together. But he did end up remembering.

Then he fucking dies. What the hell? How did he suddenly lose his immortality? I'd guess that his true desires or wishes were somehow fueling his immortality, and then when it was completed when he learns that Ai really is his daughter and he got closure on Hana, then everything was fulfilled. But that still seems absurd to pull out the immortal card, then take it away the very next episode.

How about the other bomb though, the villagers being dead the entire time!! How in the fuck is that even possible? Looking back, it was clear that one dude in the field in episode 1 was clearly already pretty messed up, but some of them seemed super normal. Like wayyyy too normal. Their deaths needed a bit more explanation. Some of them you could tell they were dead a while; the nasty infected gashes, the bloody eyes, but like her foster parents looked completely normal. People still had the ability to work the fields, the guys trying to kill daddy were able to run and use guns.
- So when did they all die? They said that the living dead would eventually lose it physically and mentally, so you're telling me the dead can last over 12 years?
- Were they all dead before Hana died? It almost seems like it. Because if people stopped dying 3 years before Ai was born, then that means that nobody should've died naturally afterwards. I could see maybe 1-2 people died in accidents or something, but they shouldn't really be affected by sickness anymore right? So how did all 47 of them die and stay alive that long? And if some died before others, they didn't start showing symptoms of decay? Did Hana just not bury anyone as a gravekeeper?

My mind is literally blown by this right now. I really cant comprehend how that entire village was nothing but dead people.

kizunas death made me cry loads I really wasn't expecting it. But its confused me like how has he died if he was immortal. did his immortality suddenly disappear because his new wish was granted, to have people who care about him there when he died? It's really messed me up.

The reason why I started to watch this show was because of Kizuna because I thought he's one of the main characters. I was really shocked that his role ended quickly (like Mami Tomoe from Madoka). I wished that the arc extended for one more episode so that we can really delve into his character.

That ending just felt... really bizarre to me. I didn't have time to learn enough about the characters to feel any real attachment to them and I honestly didn't understand neither Ai's nor Julie's feelings towards Hambert enough to justify their behaviour and reactions.

Nonetheless, I am oddly hooked.

I read most of the manga that was updated so I didn't know THAT HE WOULD EVENTUALLY DIE. LIKE IN THE THIRD EPISODE IN.

no but ssrsly, I was thinking he'd be a character that would stick around until the end of the series protecting Ai and doing cute daddy shit BUT ISN'T IT A BIT TOO SOON TO KILL OFF THIS PRECIOUS BBY ( TДT)

this episode was sad and unexpected, it from 'awwwwwwwwwwwwwww' and 'yesssssssssssss' to really quickly 'WTF NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO'

Agreed.
I was aware something was going to happen on episode 3, something unusual (just look to the replies this thread has versus the rest of the series), and well damm.
It got me a bit emotionated there, I didnt expected him to die.

Well shit at first i was really sad even tough too me it was dumb bullshit, but after some thinking i get it, he died around his "friend" i guess and his daughter so being happy, but that mean that if she hadn't said she was his daughter and let him die normally he would have com back.

That's quite the loss, the character was super cool and i was sure he would be here t'ill the end of the show, but after understanding the reason of his death even tough it was maybe quite quick, only 3 episode, i think it was amazing, simply beautiful !

But i still think it could have been better if she didn't say she was his daughter, so he die "not happy" and come back, then she tell him and they can spend time together t'ill he actually get critically injured toward the end of the show and here die happy with his daughter and friend around him, i think that would have been better.

Anyway there is some chance that his death serve a purpose to the plot so all my "i would have preferred that" bullshit is worthless.

I did not even see the feels train until it hit me right in the face. In the words of All Might, HOLY SHIT. That was a freaking genius ending. I was so convinced that as a main character he would not die there, even as he told us his dying wish and then had it granted right then and there. Hell, I didn't even realize it was being granted before it was spelled out loud for me. The ending song has gained unfathomable levels of respect from me. Jesus, a beautiful twist fit for the finale of a beloved anime given to us in the third episode. I just hope they can keep this up.
