There was a time skip

Looks like the anime decided to skip ahead a few chapters in this episode. Chapter 111, the final several pages of Chapter 115, and Chapter 116 got adapted for this episode. The anime added some elements of other chapters from the manga for its opening scene, as well as adding, changing around, or removing some minor things within key scenes of this episode. Plus as a result of the the anime skipping past several chapters, it does change up some plot elements for this episode, notable of which being Isuzu still being hospitalized in the anime while she is no longer so in the manga chapters adapted. Here were changes I observed from this latest episode:

-The series of scenes for the opening of the episode before the intro are either anime-only or taken from other chapters within the series:

  • Ayame and Mine’s scene is anime-only, but uses dialogue from a flashback with the couple coming from Chapter 110 of the manga. While the manga left things unclear if Mine knew about Ayame’s curse, the anime makes it clear through Ayame’s dialogue that he told her about his curse.
  • Mayuko and Hatori’s scene is exclusive to the anime.
  • Machi and Yuki’s scene comes much later from Chapter 128 of the manga. The anime shortened Yuki’s narration during the scene and changed the intent of it.

-Due to the anime skipping ahead past a few chapters, the conversation with Momiji, Tohru, Yuki, and Haru had some dialogue changed to reflect this.
-During Kyo’s conversation with Hiro, a small bit depicting Shigure asking Hiro and Kisa to housesit as he leaves got removed from the anime.
-Shigure recollecting dialogue from Kureno and Akito regarding his treatment of the latter was removed from the anime.
-The scene with a younger Shigure waking up and observing a flower blooming was added for the anime.
-During Tohru’s scene with the younger Sohmas, there was some dialogue she recalled from earlier in the manga that got removed from the anime. Since this does involve one of the skipped chapters yet to be adapted, I won’t make mention of what was brought up for right now. In addition, the anime removes a scene where Tohru spaces out as she is reflecting on this and Hiro asking Yuki and Haru if Kyo likes Tohru.
-Momiji and Kyo’s conversation is set up a little differently for the anime. In the manga, both were outside Kyo’s bedroom. In the anime, they are inside Kyo’s bedroom as he is lifting a dumbbell for exercise. The scene is also shortened some in the anime.
-The anime removed the final scenes of Chapter 111 that included:

  • Kagura and Isuzu arguing over why the latter did not attend the dinner at Shigure’s house.
  • Tohru and Kyo glancing at each other.
  • Akito brooding in her bedroom at the main Sohma estate.

-Much like the prior episode, the red rope meant to symbolize the “bond” of the Sohma curse breaking apart was added for the anime.
-The opening scene of Chapter 116 that shows Momiji observing his mother from a window was removed from the anime.
-Momiji’s scene with Akito after the breaking of his curse was originally depicted as a flashback in the manga.
-Instead of from the school rooftop, Momiji observed the conversation with Tohru and the other male Sohmas from another window of the school in the anime. Additional dialogue was added to this scene for the anime and the setting change is reflected during Momiji’s later conversation with Kyo.
-The bit where Momiji’s younger self is observing himself walking forward during his verbal exchange with Akito was added for the anime.

The growth spurt is so unrealistic that I almost think there's a time skip between episode 4 and 5. Not gonna lie it really make me confuse at the beginning, which is not a good start.

That's why I gave a 4 stars instead of 5. The anime skipped many chapters and his growth looked too sudden in comparison with the manga IMO. Also, because of the adptations, some cute and funny moments between Kyô and Tohru are removed. But it is maybe better this way, it feels more dramatic and curse-centered. Still loved the episode though ^^

Akito is so messed up, how could anyone stay beside her

It's like Momiji "said" in this episode : "What was this sensation of being constantly watched from my inner self ? How can such a pitiful and trembling child could had hinder me ?"
Also, remember Kureno's explanations : he said that he understood that the relations between the god and the zodiac is a fake one once he'd been freed from the curse, but was unable to think so before.

The curse is to make the Zodiacs constantly coming back to their god, no matter how bad it treats them.

I'm glad too that Momiji decided to look forward even if he is "alone" now.
Kureno probably stayed because he does pity but he also does love Akito, otherwhise, he wouldn't had stay. It's 100% a toxic relationship.

Man, Momiji didn't hit a sudden growth spurt but did a full-on pokemon evolution! I wish they went along with his gradual growth from the Manga, so it wasn't so sudden, but overall I really liked this episode. We're getting to see Momiji's bolder side and I'm here for it.

I love my kitty cat Kyo, but the scene with Momiji provoking him had me cheering. Our little baby is becoming a man and Kyo needs to follow suit, quickly!

Also, the Yuki + Machi scene felt a little out of place. They haven't really developed their relationship yet in the anime and then Yuki decides he wants to share the secret of the curse with her? Can't wait for next week's episode, though!

Momiji grew up so fast! *-* One more curse broke and I wonder who's next >_> Time sure is changing and it was very sweet to see Yuki x Machi even just a little, but oh no, why did Kimi have to ruin the moment? X( Even so, great episode as always!

Damn a lot going on in this episode. Especially the beginning.
Ayame not wanting Mine to leave his side.
Hatori and Mayuko talking about traveling.
And of course...Yuki and Machi...God damn INTERRUPTED AGAIN!!! But the fact that Yuki wants to tell Machi the truth about the curse...Yes my boy YES!!!

Damn WTF MOMIJI!!! My boy had a growth spurt! And it finally comes out that he has a thing for Tohru. Mmm I enjoyed the egging towards Kyo too. I think Kyo definitely needed that in his life.

Oh damn I thought the thread from last week was Hatsuharu leaving. I didn't think it was Momiji's curse bring broken! This is actually huge!!!

Freaking great episode overall. Momiji's mother finally smiled towards him...god damn what an ending.

They can still not be happy about them. I’m not very happy with them either. As long as they’re not being rude about it.

I think the episode was great for what it was, but I feel like it’s missing things by coming before other scenes and by being pushed together into one episode instead of separated by a few episodes.

So far in the series I had been able to appreciate the series as Fruits Basket, now I find I’m having to remind myself that’s it’s not exact, it’s an adaptation and there will be changes. (And before someone says, “they changed stuff earlier”, none of those changes had the significance that the changes this episode could bring.”

Wow. This episode was stunning. It amazes me how I know Fruits Basket is going to make me cry every monday.
I'm so sad for Momiji. He really is a lonely person, but at the same time a free one. It seems he really matured.
I want to see more Tohru x Kyo scenes!! hahaha, but I love how they are showing all the zodiac characters

THIS EPISODE WAS FANTASTIC!!! Momiji grew up so fast it made me happy and sad. I love how Momiji handled the whole situation with Akito and Kyo. I never saw Momiji as a romantic intrest for Tohru, I saw them more as Brother and Sister, so his confession to Kyo really threw me for a loop. I'm still sad about his family situation, but I know that he'll get threw it and come out a stronger person because of it. Still not sure if Momiji is going to tell the rest of the Zodiacs and Tohru, but we'll wait and see for that. I'm so excited for next weeks episode I can't wait.

Lots of little scene this episode with different things going on but then Momoji reveal. That was one hell of a growth spurt. Curious to why his curse broke here. Feels sort of random. The kind of reason I could think of why just make me think "well other ppl should have also had their curses broke by now."

I can only hope that by the end of the season, we get to see an “end” to each zodiac’s story, with them being happy. It would hurt to think of Momoji just wandering the world alone looking for a new family and happiness. He’s so brave and what a beautiful, kind soul. So proud of him for breaking the curse and standing up to Akito!

I figured these were the chapters to be adapted. Wow they're really going out on the rearranging.

Momiji had his growth spurt! And now he's off on his own to make his own life. Good for him :) <3 If it feels like a farewell, that's because it sort of is. We don't really see him for the rest of the story as far as I can remember. Sigh, Momiji's story for me personally never really hit, but he's a good character, and I do quite like him.

Hmm, as for the preview, it's a little confusing, but... I think the quote is from Chapter 109...? I think??? If that's the case, then my guess of chapters for the next episode will be 107, 108, and 109. Omitting some stuff here and there. Maybe after, they'll finally cover

Why should it add anything to the plot? kids do grow up though I agree in the manga we see him growing slowly so it made more sense in the manga also about the curse it's very old and already have been weakening and Tohru coming in their lives helped weaken it even more

Momiji went from sweet little boy to slightly angsty but absurdly handsome young man in the span of one episode. Honestly, I didn't like how drastic this change was portrayed but leaving this inconsistency aside, it was another nicely executed episode.

In the end, Momiji not only grew physically but emotionally and psychologically as well. From "challenging" Kyou for Tohru's love as way to encourage him not to give up to finally standing up to Akito after having his curse broken. My little boy has matured so much and the conclusion with him deciding to move forward with a smile on his face even if he's "alone" gave me so much hope for his future. Don't know how things will go with his mother but I only hope his relationship with Momo doesn't stagnate and keep developing for the better.

A pretty big episode for Momiji. He finally grew, revealed that he loves Tohru, broke free from the curse, and accepted that his new freedom means that he is now alone but has the ability to find his own happiness.

Akito is really having a bad time and it looks like her father will have a key role with her development this season.

seeing kyo hurting throughout this episode is painful, but i'm glad that momiji has been pushing him to fight for his love as well. kyo might have gotten an inkling that tohru likes him but we all know he's just gonna disregard that. it's totally different when someone from the outside tells you as well. cmon kyo!! rooting for you, always!!

This ep corresponds to the chapters I most awaited its adaptation. Momiji is by far one of my favorites in the zoodiac (not counting Yuki and Kyo)

On one hand, there's a lot of too loving and foretelling moments of the beginning of the end. Ayame and Mine reaffirming their bond, Yuki and Machi advancing little by little (Machi all blushed pls!) and although it's not romantic but Thoru and Kisa hug was to cute

On the other way, there's the climax of Momiji's development, its growth that seems superficial cuz it's still silly on the outside, it actually has an impressive maturity. And if we rewatched, from the beginning Momiji was always transparent in his feelings towards Thoru and was always direct with Kyo (maybe laughing kawaii-ish but scathing) And now he says it more moving and concise than ever: yo podría tenerla but she wants to choose you, don't give up. Akito being convinced by his father that he was born to be loved is seen once more. But now the second broken curse Momiji decides to be free, although it scares him, instead of holding the bond that no longer exists

I held back the tears when he left smiling after the talk with his mother, if the ED had been Eden I'd have let out all the cry. but arigato, sayonara

MOMIJI!!! He's always been my favorite. This episode made me love him even more!!! I'm not surprised his curse broke first (after Kureno, of course). Besides Shigure, he's never been afraid to stand up to Akito. And he's one of the wisest of the Sohmas. The thing I love most about Momiji is he wants the best for those around him, especially the ones he cares for. It breaks my heart that he has to deal with his mom not knowing him, but I sense he made his peace with that a long time ago. I only hope he can convince his father to allow him to spend time with his little sister now that his curse is broken. So glad this episode gave him the spotlight.

Not familiar with the source but that really did feel like multiple stories about Momiji all crammed into a single episode. It’s like “Oh hey Momiji grew up while you weren’t looking, also he’s broken his curse, also he’s in love with Tohru for real, but he’s also giving up on that romance, ok we’re done thanks for coming BYE”.

I guess under his childish exterior and personality Momiji has really been bearing feelings for Tohru for a while. I guess what he means by getting away with stuff because he looks like a child is Tohru's kindness? Just a thought.

Yeah, that definitely felt rushed, from Momiji suddenly growing taller off-screen, to having properly developed feelings for Tohru off-screen then breaking his curse with Akito just like that. Feels like they wanted to finish all his loose ends in one go so they can move onto other developments instead. Probably also explains why this episode initially felt very disconnected from the previous one chronologically, like there was a definite time jump (however small) between where last episode ended and where this one begins.

Also, what was with that scene with Ayame at the start of the episode? That's the first time we've seen him all season, and it factored into nothing that happened this episode or any of the previous ones from this season.

He had a growth spurt. That's it. The manga showed him growing taller a little bit at a time, but the anime has to use models, so they couldn't do that.

I mean, rapid growth spurts like that do happen sometimes and everyone did comment on it (Kyo, the girls at school, etc.). But yeah, you didn't miss anything and it isn't anime original content or anything like that. 😊
