I'll be honest. I feel like some scenes could've been so much more powerful if this episode wasn't rushed.

In particular, the conversation between Eren and Reiner in the flashback. In the manga that convo felt much more meaningful, but here it was more par for the course.

Aside from that, I feel like they really skimmed on the animation this episode. The choppiness and lack of frames was really noticeable, save for a couple scenes. And I can't forget how jarring that Armored Titan shot was. Really hope those are fixed in the Blu-rays.

Then finally, for Eren's speech at the end, I felt the music could have used a bit more of "something" before the drop, don't know how to explain it properly.

Still a enjoyable episode.

Really? This episode gave me Wit studio vibes when it comes to stills and static animation when it comes to these type of episode, I think episode 2 was really obvious when it comes to lack of frames and choppiness and those bad scenes when they were using rotoscope.

I personally never notice and choppiness at all and I think your casual viewers wont notice anything wrong with this episode like how they notice the bad frames and weird movements of last episode.

Personally this episode looked the best so far in terms of art and colour, there wasn't any need for much animation anyways for this episode and it wasn't as ambitious as episode 2, but I rather this approach than the over ambitious approach which didn't really do so well in those scenes.

There wasn't any cringe moment in this episode that standout in terms of looking really bad imo.

episode 3 > episode 1 > episode 2. I love them all but the rotoscope really did more bad than good for that episode and most persons focus on those few scenes and behave like the entire episode was like that throughout.

This week the most complaint I'm expecting to see is the pacing issue from manga readers.

In terms of animation, it was good compared with episode 1 and 2.

My problem is that they still cuting important scenes.
I mean, this episode makes it look like Reiner is the bad guy.
Why dont they show Annie/Female Titan calling the titans? Why dont they show Berthold looking at the wall and transforming? Those are very kino moments.
But instead they show Kenny??? There should be priorities. Another mess of episode. The directing is terrible. You cant really "feel" the characters. Completely soulless.

You see Kenny is an ackerman, and he brings up his sister, his sister is Levi's mom, therefore all of the Levifujos willl purchase this BD now and add it to their collection. Now Fappa's cashgrab has made money. That's why that scene was included

Dina was basically what the people of the walls called "Abnormal Titans". It simply seems that what was inside the walls attracted her more than Bertholdt. I can give a more in depth explanation if you want

OMG.. I love this series so much. But the way they handle this episode compared to last 2 episode in term of pacing is downgrade, IMHO. Even me as a manga reader confused.

They should've make it slower, understandable and thus make it more relateable. When i read the manga most of reiner back story hit me hard just like the previous episode. The way they handle the music in episode 2 was really good to make us sympathize towards reiner and friends but this episode's music make me like "huhh??". Not to mention scene to scene transition is a mess.

I feel like mappa really want AoT to just show its action pack in every episode so they rushed this instead of adapting the story in a good way.

Maybe because i'm a manga reader i know a lot of things they didnt adapt and i get upset because of it. Let's just see anime only reaction to this episode. i hope they happy with this.

Last minute's eren was HOT AF.

I don't know.. Seeing Reiner running towards the wall from season 1 and finishing the scene with an obvious CGI armored titan breaks my heart. The episode was great, but the difference between 2D and 3D Reiner is disgusting.

fast paced as expected, but not this fast lol. this could have been way better, especially reiner's backstory and warrior's invasion. damn what a shame

i must be lying if i say im not disappointed, this is as expected when the whole 16 episodes was confirmed. well at this point i really wish for the future episodes will be much better, especially when the anticipated moments happen

aside from the cuts, i like how they keep some titans in 2D and hobo Eren looking great!

overall this was a good episode

Hm as someone who has read Marley arc multiple times this felt a bit rushed in terms of pacing. Thankfully nothing too important was cut out, even though I really wanted to see some scenes animated like Jean and Eren's fight.

The storyboard for Reiner's aborted suicide was very impactful. I'm really happy to see Reiner's past animated. And Eren's speech at the end was amazing, Yuki Kaji excelled once again.

I'm soooo hyped for next episode.

I'm so tired to say this, its only 16 episodes, so they had to sacrifice the early episodes so the pacing for future episodes will be good. If they were to adapt everything from these chapters then 16 episodes would not be enough to end it at chapter 122.

The pacing should be fine from now on, episode 2 and especially 3 had to be a sacrifice, not to mention they still keep the important scenes.

I'm just informing you because you are making false assumption that Mappa just want to reach to the action scene, if you were the script writer and you had 16 episode to work with, you would have done the same.

Worst episode so far imo, do they only have one music? Why tf do they keep using the same trailer song for everything with so many good ones from previous seasons.
And it seemed really poorly directed too, the scenes just kept moving with bad transitions and it felt like they had no weight at all, just dumping info randomly.

Just watched it, I wait for the SUBS because watching the premiere Raw didnt really do anything for me.

As expected the most rushed ep in terms of pacing, Surprised they were able to keep so many important stuff, I was hoping the hanged man scene to be cut, the worst I think is the lack of time for each scene, they dont have time to breath.

The best though is Haysashi storyboards, oh man he certainly did not disappoint, and Eren sounds just like I was expecting.

To add onto this, she promised Grisha she’d find him. Perhaps she caught his scent or something and was drawn to the Jaeger household. Titans aren’t 100% mindless, some still retain speech or some semblance of a motive.

I thought they would spend more time on Reiner's character as he is essentially the main character of this arc and one of its highlights. Didn't like how quickly scenes came and went one after another, think they should've left more time for audience to dwell on them. Reiner definitely deserved more time in focus. It was reduced to almost bare essentials and I feel much of the impact was lost as the result. It's okay episode overall I guess but I didn't like it nearly as much as I did the first two.

This is the problem with people watching the raws. In the manga (and when the subs get released) Annies encounter with Kenny forces them to completely rethink the whole mission, with Annie being worried Kenny, an interior MP, might recognise her if they join the MPs. This leads to the idea of breaking Wall Rose with the goal of drawing out the Founding Titan instead of having to risk joining the MPs, which is a massive question we never really got answered beforehand. So no, there was definitely a reason why they showed Kenny, arguably more important that the other scenes mentioned.

They reuse the scene because its a flashback, would it make sense to recreate the same scene again when it was already shown in season 1?

I do think it was dumb to include that scene at 14:16 they should just continue using Wit scene when he burst through the wall, it just looked Jarring with that switch to cgi.

As someone who hasn't read the manga
This episode FELT rushed
But my take is that it's just flashbacks during when reiner was about to pull the trigger so having a faster flashback scene makes a bit of sense
Also my boy eren looks SEXY can't wait to see his roll for this season
I might consider reading the manga but I'll give it another chance
If I see more fast pacing I am switching

Overall an 8.8/10

Another solid 9 out of 10 episode for me. Felt like about 2 minutes. Some fantastic animation in there as well.

Great to see Episode 1 of the series from the perspective of "the other side". Reiner was clearly a very broken individual from the start, and the lack of a father figure in his life has clearly had a negative effect on his character. He's been a disturbed individual from a very young age. Kudos to MAPPA on the Reiner art from Paradis. He looks far more menacing an individual than he did in S1.

Annie's a psychopath that seemingly delights in seeing other living things in pain.

That shot of "the one-legged" man at the end was very chilling before it cut to black.

As a manga reader, I understand there were quite a few panels missing, but the important information was covered. It would have been nice to see more between the campfire and invasion of Shinganshina but can understand the time constraints they're under. Excellent work by MAPPA overall this episode.

Also noticeable is the use of the Sawano OST when the warriors are on Paradis. Almost as if his OST's are made for Paradis and Kohta's are for what goes on on the other side of the sea.

This episode definitely had fast pacing, I could tell even though it's been a long long long time since I read this part in the manga. But I'd rather have the pacing suffer now so that the big moments throughout the rest of the season are done justice, than to have this part be fine and have later parts suffer.

This was one of my favorite bits of the manga when I got to it. Seeing the early part of the story being seen from Annie, Berthold and specially Rainer's point of view was rather special. A shame they couldn't flesh it out a bit more in this episode.

Just to let you know manga readers hated these chapters, in the manga what worse is that they were following it monthly, while for you the pacing is faster and you only have to wait a week for new episodes, so you probably would even hate it more if you were following this arc monthly.

The good thing here is we haven't even touch on the great parts yet, but next episode is when things will start to set into motion.

@Lumiax

You see? Anime only are already complaining about the slow pacing even though they are speeding through a lot of content, in anime form things have to be sped up a bit for content wise. I do understand where you are coming from but a adaptation should be its own thing not a copy paste from the manga.
