He did die, didn't he? Or he just fell asleep while standing.. in a very odd fashion.. and he didn't wake up from the fall..
So, either he's dead (which most of us believe, since it seems rather obvious), or he's a really heavy sleeper xD

Yeah, it was indeed a sad episode.
But all ends happy...Reiji is satisfied to have
kept at least one promise in his messed up life. I'm also happy with that ending.
This show made me think alot about life.
Gah!

Hmm...McGuire? He never had much screentime, need filler plox.

EDIT ::
Omg...I finally FU***** understand why anime shows makes me more sad
than dramas with real human actors...
Because in Real-life dramas...they are just acting and they only die in the movies...
In an anime, when they die...They die.

@tsubasalover
The names that are given to the new Phantoms, Ein, Zwei, and Drei.
Are German numbers.

-
I kinda somewhat understand the whole anime now and why it ended like that. I don't think it was random. Though what concerns me is McGuire, thats it.

I think Ellen was shooted too by the same FUCKING asshole who killed Reiji. Man, im really sad. I mean, its not they didnt deserve it (i still didnt forget that Reiji killed a child, im still chocked), they were assassins and took many innocent lifes, but still T.T FUCK, Reiji and Ellen killed only to survive and then they die? FUCKKKKK, im so pissed. but well, i guess finally Reiji went to the World where Cal was...The three Phantoms stayed together forever. *threesome*
FUCK SCYTHE MASTER (sorry guys i just had to say that).

Watched the last Episode and was really touched by the entire story and the (for me) unsatisfiying end.

As i understand, Reji gets shot by the man, who gives them directions, being one of infernos killers. So thats for "loose ends". Reji passes away seeing Ein smile truly (the scene is from his point of view), which fulfills his "purpose" in the story and leaves him die happily, because of his promise to Ein regarding her backstory. Maybe he just imagines her smiling, who knows. Ein doesn't notice the death of Reji, since he walked away a bit out of her direct sightline. The flower with one missing petal represents Ein being an incomplete human, i guess. I don't think, that she dies in the end. She refers to the memories of her and Reji, which would be enough for her to continue living. So this is what Reji wanted and fought for as well. Maybe she finally woke from her brainwashing after all.
Nobody knows what would happen, if she would find Reji dead. And thats the really annoying part for me. Either both of them die with the other one knowing or they both live. So this whole thing is very unsatisfying for me, leaving a bitter aftertaste. On the other hand i'm glad, that the ending didn't include the return of Reji to Mio, which would have been too cheesy.

Overall I personally whould have preferred a happy ending. Peace of mind and all... ;-)

BTW: In the OVA and in the Series "Ein"s Name is incorrect, if it should represent the german word for "one". It should be "Eins", not "Ein".

That ending just didn't do it for me. Maybe it's the most realistic outcome, but i prefer good endings. IF they must die they should have at least done so earlier, not at the very end when a happy ending was already hinted.
This Ending and the two useless recap episodes make me give this anime a 7/10...
Seriously, who needs two flashback episodes in a 26 episode series?

WHAT?! REALLY?? The most annoying and boring character, with near-zero personality, who looks like a boy with an awful side-whiskers to boot, who looks like she needed a bath and her armpit surely stinks, whose sole purpose in the show is to educate the viewers regarding obedience lessons, - got to survive at the end?? (Well, since whether Ein is dead or alive at the end is purely based on viewers' -assumptions- and are not official facts.) That's BS!!

I've been seriously waiting since ep1 when she'd get to be eliminated permanently, since her "HAI MASTAH" is getting tiresome and very annoying. I was really really RELIEVED when Reiji accidentally shot her. I thought that was the last time I'm gonna see that annoying boy-looking girl with an extravagantly annoying side-whiskers. I was extremely horrified when she made her comeback and I was like WTF here we go again, good luck to me trying to endure watching the show with the girl that looks like a boy-with-annoying-whiskers. OMG. My brain's gonna get fried again with her obedience lessons. Remember the scene when Scythe put a lubricant on her? I totally cringed at the thought of 2 fagly characters going at it and SM putting his pinkie finger on Ein's @hole. UGH! They should make a follow-up harem OVA/Hentai with SM as the protagonist with the sisters and Ein.

And YES! Reiji got what he deserved, a lame ending that is. Anyway Claudia and Cal are the only ones that kept this anime going for me, but meh, Reiji only looked cool b/c of Claudia and Cal, otherwise he would be comparable to SM -a ghastly character with weird fetishes/lolicon. Actually I don't even know which is more satisfying, Reiji or Scythe's death? They're both scumbags.

Anyway, I'll go look and order for the VN, and I hope there that Ein's hard curly whiskers got trimmed, straightened out, or laid back. Coz that coupled with her dog-like obedience makes me rage and my brain dry. Well if you look at it, the 3 of them -Ein, Reiji, and Cal, were all manipulated by SM but Ein's stupidity is on another level, she probably doesn't even have a brain to begin with, they should've put on her a leash, collar, and a cage, or at least identified her with it. Instead they identified her with a lubricant and SM's pinkie finger =/

OK Rant over. Voting 1 now. Wait! Reiji got killed. Gonna hafta raise it tah a 1 1/2, yay!

ps. What if we got a Scythe-Ein ending? That'd be epic :P

Okay, I just plowed thru this entire thread (if you believe me) and found that ending is an expired laffy taffy that none of you can chew thru.

You kids thought about it too much. If you all know the visual novel that this is based on, you know, the one I never played but am right now discussing, you play as the male character Reiji. So basically this is the ending: when the Random Shadowy Man In The Horse Drawn Wagon From Mongolia Who Was Really Hired By McGuire To Kill Reiji shot and killed Reiji, it is basically a Game Over for you. What ever happens to Ein you know nothing of, because your world is slowly fading into darkness and credits. Whether she died or not doesn't really matter that much, because Reiji died first, and from a VN perspective you don't get to see anything after you are dead (except the main menu.)

I understand you are still concerned about the two main symbolic scenes (the missing petal on the NOT SO POISONOUS flower and the bullet that was in the grass and NOT NEAR THE ROAD.) Your symbolic analyses may have worked out with elfen lied but here you can't do jack about it. MAIN POINT IS: Reiji (you) died first and jumped off the mortal coil. I find it credible that while the credits roll you are actually looking out of Reiji's eyes (you know, just like in the VN), you see Ein do her Mysterious True Smile and Longest Fade Ever. Did she die? Some say yes. Some say no. But I say you'd never know. Well, maybe unless you go learn some Japanese and mail to the writers and ask them. I know! One of you, go do that and come back and tell us what they said. Then we can all have a bloody consensus on this way-too-long thread. No more speculations pleeeease.

Endnote: If you are accommodating enough to believe that a person can grow 2 feet withing 2 years then I'm sure you can accommodate this (if you can call it that) an ending. Chill out.

Just watched the ending, and I too was very unsatisfied.

I had hoped for an ending where Reiji says he's sorry to Cal, and Cal falls apart and begins to love Reiji again.
Then the three of them (Reiji, Cal, and Elen) could have kicked Scythe Master's and his "sexdolls'" butts.

That would have made a good ending (even though Elen killed Cal's "sister").

The moment when she is taking that purple flower into hand she says "...These memories are enough for me to continue living." so.. she needed him only to regain her memories, after she have what she wanted she kills Reiji. Thats all folks!

So Reiji fans.. hope i did not detroyed your world.

I really liked this anime, but that ending was so lame. I agree with what cL0ud777 said about Ein. As much as I wanted to like her, she was boring and very annoying due to being so mentally scared. I was ok with her being dead once Cal came into the picture, but I hate how they basically turned Cal bad and let Ein back in to tag along with Reiji. Reiji was the show for me, and for him to die at the end is really annoying.

Sad ending.

But to tell the truth I hoped for an ending like that. Guys, do you really think that they shoul stay alive, after Inferno destroyed their life entirely and they have nothing left?

I don't think there's going to be a second season. With Reji dead? Cal dead? Scythe dead? Only Elen's alive.
And why did she smiled? She had to hear that that man shoot Reji and she had to hear him falling. I don't get it. Maybe she's also dead? There was no sound and there was only one bullet, but she seemed kinda... emotionless.

RAW is out...in case anyone hasn't checked yet.

As much as I would like to believe in the whole "we didn't see a dead body" claims over at Animesuki, I know better. It's true that Reiji did surive the multiple gun-shot wounds in episode 10...but everyone and their mother knew that wasn't the end of him, because we had 16 episodes left. The finale is just so...final! LOL!

But I don't think anyone can say for sure if Elen was also killed.
For one thing, the "drive-by" shooter shot off one bullet and kept on rolling by. Afer Reiji goes down, Elen actually turns around, is "looking into the camera", and gives a little smile and a little giggle before she fades away...it was kinda creepy! XD We then see her laying in the grass, looking up at the sky and smiling. Followed by a close-up of flower she was looking at earlier, now with a missing petal, and then a single shell casing, which could have very well been a part of the bullet that got Reiji.

So to summarize: one shot, one person goes down, one shell casing *shrug*

Sorry but Elen is dead.

You forgot to mention that when Reiji fell over dead is also when Elen finally got up from doing whatever she was doing with the flower. She was starring at it for way to long to simply be admiring it. The only reason Elen wouldn't be upset at seeing Reiji dead is if she knew she were dying too. I really, really doubt that they would point out the missing petal if it weren't significant. Even more significant was that the missing petal was shown right after the close-up of her lifeless face and right before showing the shell of the bullet which killed Reiji. I don't know a whole lot about botany but that flower also looks suspicously like it could be in the nightshade family. I do know that they generally have five petals and are purple.

I think that even if it's not even referenced in the subs it's fairly obvious that Elen did indeed commit suicide by flower.

I actually really like this ending even though it's depressing because it fits the mood of the show.

Wait, so was that flower poisonous?

I like the last battle part with Scythe Master and his Puppets, and I like it when Elen and Reiji back to Mongol to see Elen's past. But yeah, the death of Reiji is a bit of lame... but I guess that's why this called Requiem. I still think that Ein is dead too, 'cause I remember when McGuire said that the new order doesn't need the assassin of the past.

IMO Reiji and/or Elen only dies because the writer ran out of juice. As far as I can tell from a plot point of view, whether it ends as a tragedy or happily ever after, there is not much of a real difference. If Reji and Elen can survive multiple gunshots and being tossed into the sea, one round wouldn't scratch them.

That, or they didn't intend to make a sequel, so there you go, sad ending.

This really helped me get a better grip on the ending but obviously large question marks still float around my head. At least with this info I can just accept what's in front of my face and just recognize that some of this ending is open to the viewers interpretation. (Whether that was intended or not I have no clue).

I'm pretty sure if you listened to her whole talk about now she can live on with the memories she now has and the name Reiji gave her you'd see the foreshadow of his death (and her living on without him), since before all she would talk about was how she wouldn't exist without Reiji.

Either way who even cares about Ein (all she did was nothing). More importantly is the orgasm@ protagonist death. I feel like this ending was made for me, with the mention of my dead protagonist fetish in that last post.

..With that said, I still feel the whole ending of this show fell apart. After Reiji and Ein ran away the goodness did too.

I like the ending, the mood got back to the earlier arcs of this series. The killing of SM was great, and that's another scene I like about this episode. Overall, it was a good show, the only complaint that I have got is the Cal's grown up arc. It's just pointless and I think the series would be better without it. Her reason to hate Reiji, to become an assassin, chasing after Reiji, etc.

I would sympathize Cal's ending more if SM actually made her do the things that she didn't want to (after she had separated from Reiji). But no, Cal's eventual fate was just pointless, her character was basically flushed down the toilet the moment she first appeared after the time-skip. I wouldn't even bother talking about Cal's growing up (aging) so fast like she had a disease or something. Other than that, the ending was truly sad but well served.

Loved the anime it was awesome. But the end had my questioning it a bit. Reiji did kind'a leave Mio hang'n though. I don't really like how they left that. I might be the only one, but that was a promise I'd liked him to have kept, and at least seen her again. Though maybe he did when the 6 months past, but it seems unlikely that he ever went back in the end.

It may almost just be me, but I laughed when Reiji got shot. Hear me out don't freak and call me heartless. But even with all the connections you know, and all the technology in the world.... fuck man what are the odds he was going to get shot by that guy ridding the ox-driven cart? lol. Inferno can't let things go eh? Just "WTF are them odds right there?" kinda' swiftly ran through my head.

Oh well, good story, thought it was crazy enjoyable.

lol well Cal's arc is a bit odd but still reasonable. about her hate for Reiji, i don't think she hate him. she just scare of being left alone. about becoming phantom and chase him, i think she just want to find him. she just wanna kill of Elen and be the one Reiji choose. well that's what i think. and about her growing up (lol) well i don't really care. after all she look "cool and hot".

yeah Inferno just can't let thing go lol. what go through my mind at that time is what will happen to Elen if he die. well they don't really deserve a happy ending i know but at least i just want him get kill by Cal and after that you guess it, or they die fighting Inferno. but oh well

Cart driver shot him,,,~mostly,,he is an inferno people~

after knew Reiji death,,Ein/Elen committed suicide.

how do you know that she will committed suicide? well the manga is still ongoing so it maybe cuz of that

even its still on-going,,,maybe this anime from an original story or novel...and the manga just based on the anime,,,it can happen ~and happened a lot~

and,,Elen had promise with Reiji,,,If Reiji died,,Elen said "She can't live without him" ~ last battle between them ~...so that's the reason she committed suicide.

i have the damn two soundtracks but none has Cal´s melody from her music box, shit!it was the song i wanted to hear the most T.T does anyone knows where i can find the melody?

Well, anyway, to me the end lacks sense. First of all, both Reiji and Elen were profissional killers. they would sense danger before getting shot. the only explanation is they were both so happy and relaxed that they totally forgot what they trained for years.
please guys, stop the theory that Ellen killed Reiji. its ridiculous. she would have to be super fast to shoot him and smile. what´s the point of killing the only person she liked? She pratically killed everyone to stay with him, the same for him. if she wanted to kill him, she would have done it sooner.
The poisonous flower theory makes no sense either.what, she eats one petal and she dies? i dont think so. usually if a person really wanted to die, it would eat the whole flower, not just the petal, believe me.
So, ill keep my theory: Reiji was shoot, Ellen was shot next by the same guy who killed Reiji. Its obvious that he had orders to kill them both, not just Reiji.
She is smiling and up in one minute and after reiji is killed she decides to lay in the floor?! i dont think so. She was shooted, she falled. She doesnt even blinks her eyes. and by that time it would be obvious that she would already realise Reiji´s death, so, if she was alive, she would be near him. suicide? i dont think so guys. she really wanted to live, even if she lost Reiji, she would keep going on, just for him.
