There's so much I want to say about this series, but I'll keep it short, like really short compared to what I intended to write. While I am an LN reader, I did not read Violet Evergarden, and this is a story I imagine is better digested as an LN compared to anime. I guess KyoAni decided to go "Challenge accepted".

Some scenes were awkward to watch, like the one where Violet accompanied Aiden to his final breath of his life. I don't mean like "creepy awkward" but in my perspective, the scene didn't properly portray how Violet really felt at the time. I understand the whole "putting up a professional facade" thing, it's the rhythm of the actions and cuts just made it quite flat. I can imagine how much more congruent the entire scene could be portrayed in the LN. There are few other scenes which in MY OPINION suffer from the same lack of eloquence.

Other scenes however, were very well done. The frame compositions, the edits, the rhythm of the cuts, the visual symbolisms, all felt like an expensive HBO miniseries. I also love the pseudo time-lapses.

Some episodes were stronger than others. Not much to say here. I'd prefer it if each story affected Violet more in some ways. Some episodes felt like Violet is just being there and functions as our lens on what is going on in the world. Events did affect her in some way, but wasn't meaningful enough to be part of the overarching story. Overall story however, it's just a nice and simple redemption, realization and "life must go on" story. No unnecessary convoluted story. Very nice. Supporting characters were okay but not fleshed out. It's completely understandable. Not a complaint, but would have been nice to visit those characters' story a little more.

The animation, holy crap the animation is godlike. The animation, IMO, is what carried the series for me. Every single frame is brimming with love and care. Lost count on how many time I replayed certain scenes just to marvel at the excellence of the work. Every intricate movement was animated. Bobbing hair when walking down the stairs. Violet undulating when Anne was impishly bouncing on the couch. The entire body betraying a subtle start at just a simple gesture like waving a hand. No other studios go the distance KyoAni does. I noticed some CGI but they weren't out of kilter with the scenes. And the damned prosthetic arms were HAND DRAWN!!! If I had to nit-pick a shot or two that wasn't done too well was the wide panning shot of Violet taking a step on the lake. The CGI there looked whack IMO. And Violet's Naruto-run in episode 11.

Music was good, not much to say. Sound was mixed well. Every single change of camera angle had different reverb parameters and the stereo panning and phasing was impeccable. Sound-wise there was only one instance where the blunder was too conspicuous to ignore, which was in Episode 11 (that damned Aiden episode....). Right at around the beginning with the side shot Violet riding the cart and the truck comes in from the left. The engine sound of the truck wasn't faded in and it was jarring, and the timing was off at that. Other than that, every sound was believable. Love the little clinking sounds her arms make.

Favorite episode is 10. Least favorite, as you can possibly tell, is 11.

Overall, enjoyed every frame of it. Story and characters, it's just nice, nothing to write home about. I'd like to write so much more about this but I'll just leave it here.

This is how looks like a pinnacle of shameless parody on drama itself:

We have some absurd main heroine (let's be honest she is a retarded imitation of Saber from Fate/State Night) which acts like a robot and hasn't any emotions at all like she lived in basement her whole life when in fact she was in stressful situations all of the time on battlefield and even in a barracks so at least she should be full of negative emotions like fear, anger and fury so it's just impossible for her to act like a doll. She is crying when major was shot by after that loses emotions once again instantly?

She was 10 years old and killed soldiers in close combat, this is just ridiculous. Author could use special weapon for her, she could kill soldiers as a sniper or in a sleep or by using her childish appearance and striking enemies in the back but no, this anime isn't for adequate people from the start so why to bother? One rifle bullet tore off a hand like her hand had a width slightly bigger than a bullet itself, a grenade tore off a second hand with a surgical accuracy. She has a physical strength of an adult man for no reason and doesn't feel a pain.

Absolutely idiotic PTSD reasoning in terms of MC. Why the hell Violet should be ashamed of her killings if she was in army, got orders from her beloved and didn't kill enough enemies so he was killed in the end? The only weak point she had was the death of major, she shouldn't care about anything else. PTSD is clearly forced by author so he could use it instead of "major of Schrödinger" which was a tiresome for a long time.

What could make such carelessly made MC even more absurd? Well, she looks like a doll like it wasn't enough for her to be a doll in emotional terms. How long could she survive in her own army with a such cute appearance in a combine with her emotionless?

The whole so called story which is based on mini-stories of irrelevant one-sided characters and flashbacks is just an artistically designed formal drama. Formally it has typical dramatic scenes, typical dramatic phrases and uses cheapest trick - dramatic situations instead of dramatic wholesome story since it's so easy to add some teary by its nature situations instead of developing a story which is primitive "Violet with major - Violet without major".

Most fake anime I ever watched, it's trying so hard from the very start to make a gloomy and melancholy mood, uses classical music (which is totally forgettable by the way, shame on you Kyoto Studios), good animation represents full spectrum of emotionless Violet which became even more simulated when she was full of emotions. High ranking is saying it all, people like conveyor products decorated as something handmade. If these people had some eyes or maybe experience then maybe they could see though the cover - the strictly followed instructions from the drama cookbook.

When it comes to drama and the MC’s development, this anime hit the spot. However, the action and some character’s story and characteristics have some flaws in it so I’m still battling if I’ll give this a 7 or 6. Though the totality of it is pretty decent but I think this is overrated.

I really loved this show. When I was about half way through, each episode made me cry. Starting when Violet started going on her own calls. It really touched me to see her touch each persons life, and how they each impacted her. She really started to make up for all that she did. This was such a beautiful anime.

I am glad that I'm not the only person that cried. It is really rare that an anime/movie/series can make me cry but this one hit really hard. Big 10/10 for me and I will watch the movie tomorrow for sure!

It was great and very nice story, but I hoped for more breathtaking moments at the end.

Benedict on the train surprised me with courage and Violet fighting and not wanting to kill anyone was great and all, but what moved me the most is the part with this dying lady and young girl.

About Violet's story it may be the best slice of life I have ever seen. She really tried and made a great change.

It was great anime, but it did not leave me with any strong emotions or longing for more of this story. 8/10

I hate it when anime/manga that I enjoyed ends, especially when there could be much longer plot and when I love main heroine :P

I really enjoyed the initial 2/3 of the series since it had a ton of humorous elements of Violet giving blunt responses to people while she was learning to be a regular human girl. Everything leading up to her finding out about Gilbert's death was very interesting and lots of tear jerkers.

After that I felt like it could have been wrapped up since she grew to understand her purpose of being a doll.

I like that there is some resolution to the brothers arc, but some of the last few eps had convenient plot devices. Eg. Benedict jumping in to help the mission to remove the bomb. Violet happening to miraculously know who Aidan is and parachute right in front of him.

Also the fact that only she has the metal arms and no one else. It's like, every other soldier who was injured just died.

I've never read the light novels so maybe there are some missing gaps.

My favorite episodes were the ones featuring Luculia, the Princess, the playwright, and the astronomer. Basically the ones that showed the most Violet character development.

Still giving it a 9/10 though, the sound and animation quality was spectacular. I was watching with a good sound system on 4k TV, so definitely appreciated the consistently amazing quality.
Wish we could've gotten more back story of Cattleya. Will be checking out the OVAs now

What a beautiful ending. It wasn't necessary tear jerking, or overly joyful. It was the relaxed melancholy that comes with healing. Violet moves forward, truly of her own free will, truly feeling a variety of emotions, even if they are difficult to understand."

All that and an open ending.

Quick question that I could have simply missed the answer to- is there a reason she types with only one hand in this episode? Both for her letter and the client's.

I watched this anime watched on Netflix spontaneous and non-stop all the way. A masterpiece, I got to give it that. I had heard about it, but it exceeded my expectations. Her necklace was connected with her world, lovely to see that. Also, beautiful animation, one of the best character development of the MC.

Omg same that’s exactly why I came here ! 😂

Also some people are really rating this anime like 3/4 out of 10 but are on their lists giving stuff like Sword Art Online 9/10. 🥴 Seriously?

Thought it was a really decent anime, beautiful animation and a touching story that kept me entertained the whole way through. Some of the scenes were real tear jerkers without being cheesy. Definitely a solid 8-9/10 for me. :) Sometimes it’s nice just to watch an anime that’s not action packed and sword fights every single episode.

Very nice conclusion for this short but emotional ride, I really adore those emotional moments during this episode and how much Violet matured and changed for better troughout these series, she really is an awesome and memorable female character.
I must say that Kyoto animation did a phenomenal job to make this journey look beautiful and touching.

I'm looking forward to the movie

The slice of life,Drama genre is in general the most impactful of all, especially when u have to deal with troubles urself. Watching shows like violet Evergarden, U lie in april and a silent voice. Gives me an unexplainable feeling, it’s a feeling of total peace.
I mean u cry and stuff, but in a good way

Hope u all enjoyed it aswell :)

Cause on the cover of that movie you can kind of see something that could drastically change the impact of a lot of the things in season 1. Ah, who am I kidding. So after binging the series and OVA again, I really believe Violet should get a raise.

Srsly, she not only filled ppl with love, she prevented another war.

So yeah Claudia give the girl a raise and extra week's vacation. She kinda deserves it.

Stay safe everybody!

This series managed to pull my heartstrings, some of the emotional scenes of the characters were well done, and some of Violet’s too. I only wish the series was longer so we could possibly have more depths into the character development and the emotions of Violet and the other characters too like Catyleya (?) and Dietfried. Also there was a bit of a “time jump” in between the episodes, in the earlier ones Violet was still under developed in knowing about human emotions but then towards the middle she somehow became a great writer and Doll already - wish it was more gradually done (not sure how the LN is though)

But overall I really enjoyed this series. Not to mention visually it is very aesthetically pleasing, and there were a lot of times I was amazed by the visuals such as the landscape of the green fields and flowers, the port, the mountain with the stars on the sky. The characters are also designed beautifully (perhaps not that surprising lol).

The ending scene though…. What’s with Violet’s reaction??? It seems like she recognised whoever is on the other side of the door… Cant be that it’s Gilbert????? I’m half torn wanting Gilbert alive but the other half of me think it’s okay with the way it is now (Gilbert presumably dead).

This series has been on my list for a long time and finally marathoned it over the weekend lol

the action sequences was so fucking bad at the end. why did the soldiers not shoot? retards, all of them. so so bad lmao. and the entire show was just a giant blue ball. i know the major isnt fucking dead. just tell me he isnt already jesus christ. animation is solid. sountrack is good but gets very repetitive. very melodramatic and ppl getting emotional over trivial stuff. id give 7.5/10. its an alright anime. ill watch the ova and movie hopefully so i can see the major not be dead

9/10. I was going to give it a 8 until they teased the Major at the end (however, no, I don't think it was him - I'm sure he's alive, but Violet would've instantly hugged him or something instead of saying her name).

Could have easily been a 10 but unfortunately some of the story decisions were not as good as the others.

On the plus side, the animation and art was top-tier. It heavily reminded me of Attack on Titan, so it gets a 10 in both regards there, and that was what really carried the series.

Alright I've finally finished this show after having been putting it on hold for ages (I don't even know why I did since I liked it a lot).

Well, back when I started it I had a very positive view on this show, I found the art and setting to be beautiful and Violet's character very promising, plus the stories were very touching.
But now that I've seen a lot of shows that handled similar topics, I can't help but be a bit harsher.
I haven't changed my mind regarding the art and setting, I love it.
But for the rest, I have some issues. The thing is that even back when I was very optimistic about this show, I always had an issue which was that the show was described as a tearjerker, and yet I never ever felt like crying. I thought something was wrong with me, but after having seen a lot of shows that managed to bring me to tears, I know for sure that I'm not insensitive. Yet, even after watching the last, supposedly particularly emotional episodes, even after watching episode 10 that I was certain would make me cry considering its reputation, not a single tear came out. And I think I know why : that's because this show has a messy pacing, a clumsy way of handling subjects, and above all a tendency to be very emotionally manipulative (and if there's one thing that cannot make me cry in fiction, it's when said fiction tells me when to cry rather than letting me feel when I want to cry, I want real emotions, not sad violins and constant bawling).

It has a lot of good ideas, but it would've benefitted from a more linear story (I am not at all saying it should've given up on the episodic format), making Violet's development more consistent (she is a good character but most of said character revolves around her sad backstory and her new ability to feel (and by ability to feel I mean her ability to cry), it's not bad at all but I'm sure she could've received more than that to solidify her development, no need to add a lot more but just something that proves she isn't made to manipulate the audience's feelings), and real, raw emotions rather than melodrama. I'm sure it could've done it which is why I'm mentionning it.

But as I said it isn't a bad show, at all. I've seen shows doing it a lot better but I've also seen shows doing it a lot worse. It is good, it just had the potential to be great yet never explored that potential, making it feel kind of superficial even if I can tell a lot of heart went into it. I give it a 7/10, and I'm curious to see if the two movies will be better.

What a beautiful episode this was, and yet I like these new hands of hers more than the old ones. 🤭 However, everything ends well, but how ugly of them to read his letter like that and without being able to retaliate. 😂😂🤚🏻 But who did Violet see in the house then, hmmm. 😑🤔

The first half of this ep, which continued on from episode 12, felt way too wacky. Not necessarily in a bad way, but when you see benedict kick a bomb of a bridge, and Violent tear a bomb away until her limbs are barely on, seems pretty, eh, different to what we seen prior.

I thought the meeting between Gilbert's mother and Violet was executed quite nicely. It reaffirmed everything that Violent has learned up until this point, and was, in the end, way too sweet.

From giving letters to the living to delivering letters to the deceased. Kind of a good idea tbh. Although, it's not just for the deceased. You can even send letters to yer future self. Hodgins really wants a daughter, hehe.

pretty convenient how benedict developed the ability fly kick that bomb and hoist himself onto the bridge...

great animation, good characters and soundtracks. the plot was average, but the individual supporting characters stories made up for it!

i cried in every episode from 6/7 onwards but that won't squeeze a 9 out of me, got you Violet Evergarden! ha!

This was truly something special, from the beginning to the end.

When I started this series, I was not quite sure what to expect and with the praise it's showered in, I was worried I had let my expectations become to great. I was worried for nothing.

There is a lot to say about Violet Evergarden, but since this has been reviewed so many times, I'll just say that it is truly special how they got me attached to the characters Violets
visits in the span of just 20 minutes or less.

And there's Violet herself, who's growth is portrayed so well throughout the series.

Some may say it's easy to thug at heartstrings with clichéd scenarios and that that is what this show does. I wholeheartedly disagree. It explores narratives that are very real and does so convincingly. It's a beautiful reminder of the painfully harsh realities of war, not only for the men and women whom fight them, but also for those left behind in the aftermath.

10/10. On to the two movies now.

Way to go, Benedict. The most underrated character in the whole show.

Also, nice to see some development from Dietfried. Keith Silverstein did a great job as him in the dub.

All in all, VE wasn't a slam dunk of a show but still had some great moments and episodes. 7/10.

I'm not going to question how Benedict managed to jump from the side of the bridge, kick a bomb bolted to a steel beam hard enough to dislodge it, but not hard enough to detonate it, and still manage grab onto another steel beam before falling into the river. I'm not going to question why Dietfried ordered to hit the breaks on the bridge instead of blitzing through it, as the train would have stopped right on top of the bombs.

I will question, however, how Violet managed to rip that bomb off its bolts with just one arm. Hell, why did her arms break at the joint rather than where the arm is attached to her shoulder? Actually, going further back, how did Violet leap at her pendant flying off a moving train, yet still manage to stay on the train afterwards? How did Dietfried manage to grab the pendant first? How did Violet manage to catch that pendant thrown by Dietfried while on that moving train? I get that it's anime physics and all, but geez.

Violet Evergarden is constantly so close to being a personal favorite, but it keeps committing to narrative choices I wish could be done better. I wish that instead of introducing an entirely new character to give Violet closure to Gilbert's death, Dietfried himself could have given Violet those heartfelt words, providing closure to both characters simultaneously. I wish instead of another Violet/Gilbert flashback, it could have been a flashback to Gilbert talking with Dietfried about Violet, explaining his feelings regarding her and leading into Dietfried's last orders to Violet. Above all, I still wish the anime could have focused more on Violet's travels, the places she's been to, and people she met. Those were some of the best episodes, and definitely up there as some of the best standalone short stories I've seen in anime, so I wish there were more of those. It's a similar sentiment I have to Kino's Journey: I don't want a story about the main character, I want a story about the variety of people the main character meets, and how those people affect the main character in turn.

I'll get around to watching the film, but as it is, Violet Evergarden has some really great moments, but I just wish it could have just focused on those moments.
