I have a question for, well, most of you, who rate anime... How do you manage to translate the whole spectrum of emotions and opinions you had while you had something watched into a single number?

There's no mathematical formula in doing this.

You just follow your heart and pick the number you "feel" suits the most to your watching experience.

Or if you want to be more rigurous and procedural, you can identify the most common and general feelings you can experiment towards a show or movie, arrange them in a hierarchical way, assign the corresponding scale number to each, and then follow those own rules you just established every time you finish anything.

I weigh both the good and bad aspects of it. The resulting number is the net reaction.

You just have to feel it.... Pretty straightforward stuff, tbh.

4: Shitty characters with shitty personalities.
5: Shitty MC or too short.
6: Ending sucked ass or there was a cringeworthy moment.
7: Alright, but lacked more interaction between certain characters.
8: Lots of boner moments.
9: Packed with extended lewd scenes.
10: Outlier.

If it's not ecchi, 8 and 9 are enjoyment-based.

The rating is not an absolute number that objectively determines how good a series is. It's just a comparison. You liked more a show you rated an 8 than a show you rated a 4. At least that's how I use it. I like this anime more than this one because I rated it higher. It all depends on how much I enjoyed a show, and other factors such as the soundtrack, story, etc. So yeah, I use it as a comparison, not as a complete summary of the series in just one number.

Are you fucking kidding me?
lol it's not so hard you just put a damn number you find appropriate for the anime you watched. It's not rocket science.

My rating system is:

10- "holy shit that was fkin great"

9- it had a few flaws, but it's still a blast to watch

8- i enjoyed it a lot, but don't feel like giving a 9 or a 10 for some reason

7- quite pleasant. Might have gotten a bit boring at times

6- decent, but has at least one big flaw that makes it "not that good" in my opinion (example: code geass' character design

5- Average

4- boring and/or generic but has some good things

3- it's 4 but a bit worse

2- has a few things that save it from being a truly horrible show

1- SAO level of horribleness

I think that except for some rare cases, the more anime you watch, the easier it is to rate.

Whether I liked or hated it determined which half of the 1-10 scale it's in and how good or bad the the quality of the show is determines which one of those 5 ratings it gets. I don't find it very difficult at all.

Unfortunately I'm very biased when I rate and I also have the bad habit of comparing all the anime series I've watched with the ones I consider 'masterpieces' (such as Darker than Black for example). Because of that most of series are rated low. Sometimes I give a high rating to those anime series that were original and enjoyable even if they weren't masterpieces (for example SAO).

But if the MC is not likeable I instantly drop the series and depending on how much I hated the MC, the series gets a 1-5 rating

Its a mattar of feelings and every one differs in the way they feel towards an anime

The numerical rating scale is inherently deeply flawed. It's difficult to rate on the same scale when different shows have entirely different objectives. It seems odd to evaluate a comedy using the same criteria you use for a tragic drama. Then you consider that, no matter how fancy and sophisticated one makes their criteria look, it's still totally subjective. So really I think you can only rate on personal enjoyment. I attempt to also factor in staying power - if I'm still thinking about it after finishing it, that means it gets a higher score because it had some effect on me.

I try to break up the show into different aspects or "parts". I've listened to several YouTube Reviewers use this formula to break up their series. It allows you to compare very different genres by holding them within the expectations of their genre. In other words, you can't compare a romantic comedy to a action/thriller with the same expectations - they're meant to make you react differently. But you can break both of them into components and look at the pieces critically if you want to.

Some sections I like to consider are:

Animation quality - was it pleasant to watch, eye candy, stunning, smooth transitions between settings? If CG was involved did it blend well with the other animation or stick out?

Plotline - was the plot interesting, the episode conclusions leaving you wanting more? Was it complicated enough to maintain your focus? Was it boring, predictable, or way too complex to understand? (

Characters - are the characters relatable, enjoyable, and entertaining? Do they convey their characteristics consistently, or is their personality incoherent? Do they develop, grow, or learn in any way?

Acting - the quality of direction can lead any talented cast astray to a poor performance. Did you feel sincere effort from the actors?

Music - did the OST complement and/or complete the world that the story takes place in? Can you hum melodies to yourself after the show is complete?

And of course, personal enjoyment has to be considered. Otherwise it wouldn't be YOUR rating scale. If I find myself thinking about a show long after I've finished it, then that story indeed had an impact on me. And quite frequently those will receive a higher rating.

I separate emotions from the facts... I rate based on facts but I do add in the tag option scores for plot, development, originality, characters, animation and soundtrack... The overall score is an average

Tbh, I hate scoring shows, so I usually just.. don't, I guess? And even if I do score them, it isn't as if I actually bother calculating that score out anyway.

Just looking at your completed anime list, You rated the series so I don't know if you are just bullshitting about the rating system. If you dislike the rating system then should you not score them?

Yeah that's sorta what I meant - I don't really 'calculate them out', or act as if they're entirely accurate or relevant. They're all, for the most part, impulse ratings.

It's a way of representing your feelings about a show in a scale. If you want to extend about it you do so talking or doing a review.

Do you really rate food? That would seem a lot harder to me than scoring anime, havent tried tho

Oshii is probably the only director that loves dogs. He thinks he's a dog himself.

Not to the point of actually scoring it lol.
It was just an analogy. If I enjoy it I rate it high, if I don't then no matter how good it is it'll never get pass my standard number.
(though I'm the pretty generous type since I always rate most show that... doesn't end up on a negative note for me an 8.)

I take all scores I give each category and find the average. If I need to remember how I felt about a certain part, I just watch the episode again
