How about Nocte Obducta / Agrypnie / Harakiri For The Sky ?
I'm enjoying them, not a gigantic fan of either of the vocals though. The second has a great melody but the vocals remind me of metalcore I would prefer a lower pitch.
I listen to pretty much all metal besides some nu metal, some metalcore, and doom metal is not really my thing either.
Deathcore, power metal, heavy metal, and prog metal would be my favorite subgenres.
You think the worst of all is far behind
The Vampyre of time and memories has died
I survived.
I speak, I breathe,
I'm incomplete
I'm alive - hooray!
You're wrong again
'Cause I feel no love
Woah wtf. This site is full of metalheads. Though it's another thing most ppl listen to shit metal.
If anyone wants any suggestions, but doesn't know which genres he/she likes, they can ask me. Just tell me what kind of 'atmosphere' you want, and I shall give thou my suggestions.
Honestly never heard a doom metal song, it's just slow metal isn't it?
Post-Metal
Is it like post rock only heavier?
Would that qualify as post metal?
Sludge
?
Symphonic Meta
Do you like maybe rhapsody of fire? they kinda more power metal-ish but still
Progressive Metal
Never really understood that umbrella term, it really seems just like longer 8-15 minutes songs that are something more than a typical verse+chorus+verse+chorus+solo+chorus type of songs.
"Djent"
But does it djent?
Atmospheric Black Metal
?
Depressive Suicidal Black Metal
nah, you have to make that shit up, you can't be for real
Post-Black Metal
?
Folk Metal
is it something like korpiklaani? or 90% of fairy tails soundtrack?
Avant Garde Metal
?
Industrial Metal
Is there any other industrial metal band than Rammstein?
Death Metal ( but Im selective on it mostly preferring it mixed with other genres)
I honestly dislike death metal maybe aside from melodic death like callenish circle (tho they may be more deathcore)
"Gothic" Metal ( I knkow it's ill defined and vague)
dunno any gothic metal band
Metalcore ( trve metalheads t-t-t-triggered )
lol
I find Power Metal too cheesy most of the time so I'm usually not too into it even though I enjoy it on occasion. I'm not too big on Thrash either but I don't hate it.
My two fav metal genres XD
Doom Metal
Slow and heavy as fuck. Derives its sound from Blues. Black Sabbath popularized the genre. Personally I think the psychedelic side of the genre is where its at.
Electric Wizard- Come My Fanatics; Dopethrone
Candlemass' first two albums
Sleep- Holy Mountain; Dopesmoker
Om
Shrinebuilder
Post Metal
That's not quite post-metal. More part of the progressive djent movement. Great artist though. You're not far off with the heavier post rock description.
Neurosis
Isis
Cult of Luna
Agalloch
Toundra
We Lost the Sea
Sludge Metal
See my other post in this thread for sludge recs
Progressive Metal
Yeah progressive can mean not following typical pop song structures. A lot of prog has more in common with classical music than pop music. It can also have to do with instrumentation and experimentation.
Tool
Opeth
Meshuggah
Ne Obliviscaris
Enslaved
Wintersun
Djent
Djent is just a guitar playing technique consisting of thick muted chords often embellished with electronic/computer effects. Stick to progressive djent if you are trying to get into this kind of music.
Meshuggah (pretty much invented it)
Animals as Leaders
Sithu Aye
Plini
Widek
Gru
Black Metal
Atmospheric and Post Black Metal are very similar.
Agalloch- The Mantle; Ashes Against the Grain
Ulver- Bergtatt
Burzum
Deathspell Omega
Windir- 1184; Likferd
Emperor
Bathory- Blood Fire Death
Spectral Lore- III
Mare Cognitum
Folk Metal
Basically a loose term for any metal that incorporates folk music into their sound
Agalloch
Moonsorrow
Opeth
Avant Garde Metal
Genre is defined by experimentation. Often utilizes elements of jazz.
maudlin of the Well
Kayo Dot
Death Metal
Give it a chance. There is some really good stuff in this genre.
Death
Opeth- Blackwater Parl; Still Life
Dissection- Storm of the Light's Bane
Gorod
Persefone
Lykathea Aflame
Ulcerate
Cynic- Focus
Serpent
Immolation- Close to the World Below
Metalcore
Fuck modern metalcore. Its just shitty djent. Lol just the name of the genre is enough to t-t-t-trigger me. Old school metalcore, which actually uses elements of Hardcore (hence the name of the genre) can be pretty good though.
I am glad i am not the only Cynic fan on the page.
1.Black Sabbath
2.Death
3.Bathory
4.Motörhead
5.Napalm Death
6.Angel Witch
7.Judas Priest
8.Darkthrone
9.Autopsy
10.SOAD, the nostalgia. (Yeah guys, hate me, fullfill me with your hatred.

After The Burial
As I Lay Dying
Children Of Bodom
Infant Annihilator
Sabaton
Opeth
Scale The Summit
Iron Maiden
Necrophagist
^
Just to show my range.
Don't write off an entire genre like that. I used to think that way about black metal too, and then I stopped listening to the cvlt bullshit that old school black metal people always recommend and actually found the good stuff. What black metal have you listened to?

Dude...that's literally my fucking taste...i'm not even exaggerating xD
You would be one of the very few people that i saw that enjoy both Infant Annihilator and Iron maiden x) I have metalhead friends, but they either like clasic stuff or the modern stuff.

Nice man, I was brought up on the classic stuff and transitioned into modern stuff over time.
"Surprise is an insubstantial blade, a sword worthless in war. It breaks when troops rally, it snaps when commanders hold the line, but fear never fades. So let the enemy know we come, let their fears defeat them as everything falls dark, as the worlds sun sets, as the city is wreathed in its final night. Let ten thousand howls promise ten thousand claws."

Bump.
Yes. Terminal Redux needs to have a new word invented for how good it was.
Every album just keeps getting better and better. I remember setting reminders on calendars on all my devices for the album release.
I listen to metal from time to time, mostly instrumental nowadays. Listened pretty much only to metal during my childhood, now I'm exploring other genres.
Bands I like
• The Human Abstract (probably my #1 fav)
• Opeth (close to #1)
• Megadeth (also close)
• Annihilator
• Mercyful Fate
• Wintersun
• Motorhead
• Overkill
• Helloween
• In Flames
Hey, it's not necroing if i wish to discuss the topic further :p
Anyways,
I really, and i mean reeeally got into black-thrash...
Don't think you'd like it tho...maybe...i'll just put it here
But also i'm getting reeeally back into heavy metal.
I found out i never listened to a a band called Accept, and got called a ignorant idiot. Decided to check them out.
What kind of black metal tho? I can only listen to the more melodic and more recent stuff and thrash-black or blackened thrash. Kvlt is out of the question...
@Valenthius tbh that Skeletonwitch song isn't bad at all, well I still wouldn't go out of my way to listen it myself but if someone'd put it on in a car or something I wouldn't mind at all.
The second song is amazing tho and well I never listened Accept either.
Hirax said: Huge metal fan here. Favorite band - Insomnium.
I'm a big fan of Melodic Death Metal, and i can't believe i never listened to this band. Really good stuff.
My enjoyment of black metal goes across the board, but I do gravtitate toward bands like Ulver, Agalloch, Heretoir and recently Blut Aus Nord these days. In that sense you could say my taste has 'calmed down' over the past few years, but as I said - it still goes right across the board. My vinyl collection can be viewed here to give you a good idea.
Here's a track I've been enjoying recently
Bölvat es okkr, bróðir,
bani em ek þinn orðinn;
þat mun æ uppi;
illr er dómr norna.
-Hlöðskviða
(The Battle of the Goths and Huns)
Fiction-S said: Is any other metalhead in here also branching out to music they thought was "unworthy" in the past?
I recently looked into music such as New Wave, Dark Wave, and occasionally 80's pop.
I get into Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim and Joy Division now and then. Even a bit of New Order. I never considered such genres unworthy, though.

Truly goose bump inducing for me
i man, thats not what i expected upon reading black thrash.. knew about this ban but never listened to them.
i was thinking more in the direction of Erazor, Cruel Force, Sabbat, Whipstriker, those old school sounding bands.
Accept kick ass tho. i fuckin love the Metal Heart album. but it took me years to finally listen to them too.

I like accept's recent stuff. I like Mark Tornillo and his vocals a lot.

i dont like any of those bands sorry. i'm not into black metal. i like a fiew atmospheric bands like Leech and Skagos, and the oldschool dounsing black thrash bands that persue more of on old Sodom/1st wave sound.
a lot of black metal just sounds silly, like Absu.
Goatwhore isnt that bad, but just very bland to me. i know one member was from Acid Bath wich was a truely amazing band.
