Well on the infamous ones: Shinji.

Definitely influenced a whole generation of emoness in animation that we are still recovering from. Made convenient the use of angst in place of realism and genuine development. Whereas before, leads deal with dilemmas and continually grow and move forward, now we just have to hope the lead doesn't self-destruct at the end.

I'd say Goku. Virtually every shounen main character shares some kind of connection to him.

Don't recommend me something that is still publishing, unless its close to being finished. Don't recommend me anything that isn't licensed.

Astro Boy and Doraemon. These are 2 of the most influential anime/manga characters in history.

Enough said.

I'll go ahead and add Ayanami Rei for largely starting off the moe trend.

Go back in time and you'll get to Kenshiro.

Hokuto no Ken is pretty much the most influential shounen I can remember.

Gundam for the mechas.

And Kenshiro was inspired by Ogami Itto who was in turn inspired by Golgo 13, the paragon of the Japanese concept of male toughness and stoicism.

However...I'd say Lupin was even more influential. Direct inspiration for Spike and half the One Piece characters, as well as all the fun, easy-going male leads in future generations.
