| I'm looking for two kinds of mecha shows. One to watch with friends, the other for myself. So far I've only seen all the gainax shows: gunbuster, eva, tengen toppa etc and also Code Geass (didn't like it) and Patlabor. So obviously I'd be looking for something else with those. With friends: It needs to be entertaining and it needs to capture you rather early on. It might be something more along the lines of tengen topp, so basically over-the-top action, comedy and nice animation. Or alternatively it has to capture you with intrigue. As a non-mecha example I'd give Kaiji which I enjoyed watching in a group. It's really intense and it was fun to predict and consult what move the MC will make next. For myself: I'd like to find something a bit surreal or mind screwy. I just really like anime like utena, eva or lain where the viewer doesn't exactly know what's going on or what's the meaning of certain aspects of the show and has to think a bit longer about what happened. End of Evangelion is my favorite film, so it would be nice if the show could have not only a surreal story but also some surreal visuals. Alternatively just something with a unique/surreal art style, like the works of Yuasa or in shows like Mononoke or Kuuchuu Buranko. Since it's mecha it could be something with weird robot designs. A bit detailed I know, but i hope this helps to find something adequate. |

| JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - the 2012-2015 version. Epic action, very comedy. No mecha though, but it's the closest you'll get to a TTGL feeling really, what with everything being insanely overpowered and the work being very self-aware. Most of the characters / villains etc are named after rock and metal groups/musicians of the 70's - 80's. For pure eye candy and an killer Yoko Kanno soundtrack, Macross Frontier (2008). The original Macross has a more serious overall plot, but it also has very dated animation and extremely poor plot pacing. I think original Macross for solo viewing and Macross Frontier for group viewing. Cowboy Beebop, Trigun and Black Lagoon might be good choices for action/comedy ones that are easy for a group to get into. If you don't mind trying a sports one, try Hajime no Ippo and/or Kuroko's Basketball. Both of these have intense matches that span multiple episodes, tense cliffhangers keep you watching episode to episode, and solid characters/comedy. Kuroko's basketball is less dated and not as long in episodes so might be a better group thing. Ippo has ~125 episodes and is a bit slower to kick off to the action parts, though once it hits it's addictive viewing. |

On your own: Old anime need love too, the art in this is amazing for the time, the guy behind it wasn't the greatest story teller but the backdrop for the world could have gone places with a better writer. I'd love to see this series get a fully fleshed out universe/remade again "for reals" at some point. When they tried to remake it (once) they failed hard. It's too bad the original has seeds of greatness within. http://myanimelist.net/anime/498/Haja_Taisei_Dangaiou |

Satoshi Kon has some highly regarded shows/movies - Mousou Dairinin, Paprika, etc. Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei is a modern classic imo, Ping-Pong and Kaiba are supposedly great aswell (share the same director as Yojouhan) - not easy watches though. Haibane Renmei/Serial Experiments Lain are both held in quite high regard. Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita is a great little series that I rarely see mentioned - easily the most witty/satirical show I've ever watched and probably the funniest. Dark/ironic interior hidden behind a veneer of colour + typical anime 'optimism'. |

| I've been reading the other comments, and this is pretty interesting. I'm glad to see that there are other people "new to the world of anime" like myself. Still, to be frank, I've developed quite a list in a short time. If anyone's willing to take the challenge to comment and give recommendations, I'd be much obliged. NOTE: Some things may literally seem all over the place. Also, no matter how many times the harem genre pops up, I'd really like to avoid it in the future. Thanks for your time, and I'd glad for the opportunity to participate. -Kittyhawk09 |
