Awesome high quality graphics! And the background 3D animation art is beautiful!
At first when looking at the trailer and clips around the time the movie was about to come out, I hated looking at Goku being beat so easily by Lord Beerus in SSJ3. It pissed me off really, especially considering how random this new character felt coming out of nowhere.
But now that I've seen the whole movie, I've come to love it. It is 5 (or 10) years after Buu was defeated.
Somehow Buu is still good and in his fat form even though he got completely destroyed by Goku's spirit bomb. And so the story goes with Lord Beerus, the God of Destruction who destroys planet like nothing, who has just woken up from a 39 year sleep. From a premonition (a vision) he believes that he will fight with Goku in Super Saiyan God Mode. So he goes to earth to fight him because he believes Goku will be his best arch enemy and rival that can compete against his powerful level of strength. During the movie, while it's Bulma's 38th birthday, with the whole gang, Beerus after defeating Goku in a sparring match with only two blows in King Kai's planet, goes later to Earth.
With his teacher, Whis, eat in the Capsule Corp home and try out the manny great foods of Earth enjoying themselves at first while Vegeta tries his best to keep Lord Beerus in tack so he doesn't get mad and destroy planet Earth. So much that he ridicules himself with a dance and singing to entertain Beerus and keep his family and friends safe. It was hilarious. Along with that, Emporer Pilaf, with his sidekicks Shuu and Mai are in child form attempting to steal the dragon balls. Trunks falls in love at first sight to Mai even though she'll be turning 31 in May. The comedy level was great with that bunch, and Vegeta. And the whole gang in general. A beautiful sight at the party. Another great news is Videl is pregnant with Gohan's child. So cute.
So after Buu gets Lord Beerus mad and the gang start fighting Beerus, Goku finally arrives. Summons Shenron who even he is flustered by Lord Beerus' presence, asks how to become a SSJ God.
And that is by having 5 saiyans to give their energy to one saiyan. Gohan, Vegeta, Trunks, Goten, and the child of Gohan/Videl.
And so an epic battle commences with Goku attaining God Mode strength after experiencing it and unleashing it, not at will, but possible, with great want to unleash it. He might do it at will one day.

After the great battle, Beerus decides to let Earth go for their great food and respects Goku's strength. And mentions that there are 12 universes with stronger people than them in different dimensions.
And the voice acting is great, but I feel some of the voice actors are different or they changed their pitch.
Score, 8/10, 'cause it wasn't amazing or legendary or anything, it was just a damn great dbz movie.
It's called Dragon Ball Z, but this should definitely be seen as the first Dragon Ball Super entry. I never understood why it's called "Z" anyway. It clearly follows the manga continuity and not the anime one (an easy way to tell is that Kaio's little bug doesn't appear (but he does appear when the Dragon Ball Super anime remakes this film)). In retrospect I feel comfortable calling it a Dragon Ball Super-film but really, it should have just been called Dragon Ball. The only Z-part of the film is briefly playing cha-la head-cha-la.
The biggest strength of this film is it really feels like Toriyama's Dragon Ball and a continuation to the series. It's a comedic and light-hearted tone, reminiscent of the later Boo arc, which I like. The only real problem I have with the passage of time is I wished Goten and Trunks would have grown up a bit more.
Beerus is a great character and villain. His design as a cat fits with his statues as a god and with him sleeping in (him waking up and interacting with Whis is one of the best scenes). Him being a cat is even reminiscent of Toriyama's Neko Majin.
And then there's the Pilaf gang. Another great set of villains and a real surprise to see them after all this time. Them growing younger must be some sort of refrence to Dragon Ball GT, right? Either way, it's hilarious how their previous wish backfired this way. Love their appearance here (the comedy aspect being what I prefer in the film) and Trunks falling in love with Mai is such a weird but fun turn of events.
Vegeta is another highlight. Him trying to stop Beerus from getting annoyed is a lot of fun. And I do like that the fight starts because of Boo and the pudding.
Power-wise, it's always boring to see everyone getting their asses kicked despite previous arcs. Gohan especially should put up a better fight, being stronger than Gotenks, Vegeta and Goku. And I would have preferred if he didn't transform into a super saiyan. Goku's transformation can't require five super saiyans anyway, since Pan in Videl's belly definitely isn't one.
Super Saiyan God is silly (and it's lame with yet another transformation) but there's some good build up and I like the way it fits into the plot. The group trying to figure it out, and working together to achieve the form. Definitely more interesting that what we've seen from Super Saiyan 2 or 3. It also looks pretty cool, I really like the leaner look.
Overall liking the art and animation. The 3D-animated aspects can look a bit bad at some times, like Kaio's car or our first appearance of Capsule Corp. The end fight looks great though. Still, I do prefer the old 80's and 90's style.
Is it the best Dragon Ball film? (at the time of writing, I have not watched the two newest ones). It's difficult to judge it alongside the old Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z films. I think the simple fact of it being an actual original continuation of the story beats all those other films that re-uses elements from other arcs. It's one of the most enjoyable to watch. It's fun, has great action and all characters feel like they should. It also introduces new characters and one of the best antagonists in the series. So, I guess yeah, it is the best one. And without knowing how Super went after this, it's really nice to get a continuation after the series ended.
