I think that I am going to face the same problem fairly soon. Well, Skyzblue has already read the majority of the good stuff, so it will be easier to recommend several titles for your consideration, Dullboy, because your are not yet acquaninted with that many according to your list. You can definitely put Lone Wolf and Cub in this category. If not, think about giving My Girl or Banana Fish. Perhaps even Ayako could fit the bill - it is a story that explores the relationships in a family that pretty much punishes an innocent girl for their own sins. There is also a short one titled Inu wo Kau that portrays a family and their journey in raising a dog (the last chapter is out of place, though, as it deals with a group of mountaineers if I remember correctly). Generally, you can explore the family and guardian relationship and other related tags on bakaupdates to see if there is anything worthwhile. |

To have some thought on it (to be true , the fact that it's 34 volumes long scare me a little) . Yeah its worth the time. Beck had some minor issues and at times felt a tad repetitive. But it's a pretty good manga nonetheless. As for Lone Wolf and Cub, it was something else. Even if you're not a fan of samurai based stories (I'm not one tbh), LW&C is a must read. |

I read it years ago (it was like my fourth completed manga) and at the time it felt incredibly long, but it was entertaining. As Skyzblue says it does get repetitive and sometimes the situations get a bit ridiculous, but the characters are interesting. As for the review idea, I think you could probably write one and then if you're not confident about your writing in English, get someone else to revise it for you? Reviews are mostly about opinion and if you present yours in a clear way and your ideas are good, the grammar and so on can be checked by someone else and be improved. @Skyzblue great idea posting your current review of Rainbow! It could be helpful to others and also it made me think about my own enjoyment of the stuff in reading right now. How would I write about this and that if I had to? Thanks! |

Thanks everybody for the replies (I go to sleep and when I wake up I have all this , feels nice huhuhu ) . Yelenicus , you were especially helpfull here , thanks a lot . I had "My Girl" in the visor in the past (but It didn't crossed my mind here) , I think I'll read it yes ("Ayako" and "Inu wo Kau" too , anyway) . Tsuyokunaru and Skyzblue you are confirming my fear for "Beck" (repetitivity , etc) , but I'll read it yes . In the worst case I have "Sakamichi no Apollon" for backup (pretty sure it's a nice read) . I think I'll do the challenge a second time when I'll be done with it (soon) . |

nomstuff said: For this one ➤Read a manga published before the 90s does the whole manga have to have been published before the 90's ? or just have started before then. also does anyone have any recommendation for that? Well, it doesn't say "published in its entirety", but I am not sure. But try some of these: Akira Lone Wolf and Cub Samurai Executioner Ashita no Joe Please Save My Earth Red Colored Elegy Also pretty much anything by Tezuka. Anyway, here are some of my quick impressions on the titles I've read this month. Barbara. It was an unusual read and probably the most bizzare yet remarkable title written by Tezuka I've completed so far. As always, I was left nearly speechless due to the versatility the author employed here - the art, panel layout, the story and the themes explored were all very strong. Actually, it baffles me that Barbara is not as talked about as his other sophisticated works. However, it was not entirely faultless. Firstly, the ending feels abrupt and somewhat inconclusive, as with most of his other works. Next, I thought that Tezuka wanted to link too many independent points to the main story: celebrity lifestyle, some philosophical ideas, occult elements, politics, sexual perversity, the value of art, etc. So, despite bringing forth so many themes, most of them became muddled or ignored as the story went on. A reason for this is perhaps due to too much focus being given to the enigmatic figure of Barbara. Luckily, she and her relationship with the writer is rather interestingly handled, so the reader will most likely ask themselves whether she is even a real human being or an imaginary entity. Also, it felt as if Tezuka was only trying to figure out what to do with the story in the first couple of chapters because they portrayed an isolated event that made it seem as though there isn't a particular plot that the story is following. Apparently, this was his first attempt at writing gekiga, and it shows. Still, despite the gripes I had with it, I thought that it was a nicely twisted commentary on fame, the culture around it, as well as the issues that engulfed the generation and the country itself during those times. Helter Skelter. A short title that offered an atypical yet hardly fictitious look at the world of modeling. I though it was interesting that most of the characters were presented as negative from the get go: they were either weak, greedy, deviant or arrogant. The only positive character, to my mind, was the make-up artist. This helped me not to develop an attachment to any of them and witness the story unfold through a pragmatic lense. I liked the art style - the rushed, sketchy lines provided the story with a sense of urgency that only enhanced the miserable state of being experienced by the characters. The biggest downside was the employment of methaphorical elements. The author did not have the opportunity to finish the manga due to an accident, so they ended up underdeveloped. Namely, the relationship between Ririko and the detective and Ririko's dreams/hallucinations were a tad confussing and ultimately led nowhere. Parasyte. One thing I liked about this title is that it seemed to be almost entirely void of common tropes. The highlight was the revelation about the mayor, although I wish the author had expanded a bit on his relationship with the parasites. I admire the author for tackling issues related to humanity, morality and environmentalism. However, I felt that these themes were not explored thoroughly enough. Perhaps that is the idea - simply giving the reader some food for thought and expecting them to make their own conclusions. If that is the case, I think that some other titles did a much better job at it because they actually made me consider how these issues unfold in relation to myself and my surroundings. Nonetheless, it was a page-turner and never got stale despite some chapters being weak in comparison. Well, that is a lot of text by internet standards... Finally, if anybody else is struggling in their search for a manga that focuses on non-romantic relationships, I would suggest giving Hito Hitori Futari a try. I remember skimming through and I think that the bond between the politician and the guardian spirit satisfies the conditions. I am fairly certain that this will be the title of my choice for this category, but you can fit in others as well. |

nomstuff said: does the whole manga have to have been published before the 90's ? or just have started before then. It doesn't matter if it ended after the 90s, but it would be better if it ended during. I'm not being too strict about it. @Yelenicus Would you mind telling me which other titles you felt were better at giving you food for thought in those topics you mentioned for Parasyte? I really liked that manga because of the way it tried to explore moral concepts related to humanity so I'm curious. Also I'm done reading Subarashii Sekai which I was recommended here. Right after, I also read Nijigahara Holograph too. I had tried to read Nijigahara Holograph before but I hadn't finished it (probably because I didn't know what was going on that time, but this time it was "easier" to read). I must admit have mixed feelings about both manga and about Asano Inio in general. For Subarashii Sekai I really liked how all stories were ultimately interconnected through the character relations to other characters and how most stories were told from the point of view of female characters that seemed very realistic. I liked his casual inclusion of elements that remind me of magical realism and they don't seem out of place in the story (this was also something that happened in Nijigahara Holograph in a greater and more satisfying way), but I just can't like how tragic his view of society seems to be. I suppose he's trying to represent a specific crowd or maybe the underprivileged members and how their lives and realities can be, but the negativity is so pervasive and recurrent. I suppose that this can be seen as realistic, Japan has a complicated society, but maybe it might be me seeing it from afar, but I don't think it's that bad? Mostly everyone in these two manga seems to be rotten to the core or completely disillusioned by how dirty and rotten others and the world are; with very few exceptions. Maybe I'm a bit idealistic, but I didn't quite like that, it can add to the circle-jerking of negativity around people or even the character themselves. Some actions that feed the ugliness of the world are justified by the fact that everything is rotten and this just continues into a downward spiral. I think that it's good to be aware of these things and I know not every story needs or should have a happy ending, but when the resolution seems to be that everything sucks, then what's the point. |

well then , tsuyokunaru , to bad you didn't liked "Subarashii Sekai" and "Nijigahara Holograph" that much (still your rating for them are highter than mine even though I'm a big Asano fan huhu) . I hope you will still be interested and willing to read Solanin , because as I might have said in the thread in the past , it is I think a much more suited gate for Asano's manga than his other works , which are not really that "friendly" if I might say . It would be sad to miss it , I'm confident in the fact that you would like it better . Still , I would like to add my two cent concerning some point you mentioned in your spoiler , and give you my points of view : tsuyokunaru said: I don't think so . Asano isn't writing about "societal problem" , he is not trying to put a spot on today's problems and make people react on it . He is interesed in people's mind , there feelings , the way to deal with life , psychology , etc . His manga feels more real than reality because he touch the very essence of today's world , the state of mind of this generation . So yes , I see how you could tell it's about a categorie of peoples , but it's more than that , it's about humanity in today's world (people living in town's of developped conties , if you want to reduce) . So far , for me , he his the only one that captured this essence of uncertain , of hope and desire in the future , fear of not living a fulfilling life , etc... this is why it resonate so stongly with a lot of people like myself . It go far beyond a representation of japan society .I suppose he's trying to represent a specific crowd or maybe the underprivileged members and how their lives and realities can be, but the negativity is so pervasive and recurrent. tsuyokunaru said: There is no justification of the characters action in his manga . Yes everything feels rotten (and I insist , feels rotten) in our world and society . Yes there is the feel of a downward spiral . Asano's manga are extremely depressing , and yet , because they face the bleakness of this word , they say to us , "you are not alone . You will always be alone in yourself , but you are not the only one with those feels , you are human" . "Humanity" is the world that come to my mind when I read Asano . Reading him is as painfull as it is relieving . Human's are flawed creature , but compassion is the most important thing and what can soften our burden , that's what I feel . His characters are not monsters or angels , they are humans .Some actions that feed the ugliness of the world are justified by the fact that everything is rotten and this just continues into a downward spiral. tsuyokunaru said: Again , I don't think Asano want us to "be aware of these things" , it's not his purpose . Just like there is no final happy ending in our world , there is no complete black and absolutely dark ones , "bittersweet" is the word . Peoples are full of contradiction , we say things we don't really think , to convince ourselves , we hurt people , and we hate them...or is it because we can't deal with ourself , so we search salvation in others , solutions . Hate and love imbricated .I think that it's good to be aware of these things and I know not every story needs or should have a happy ending, but when the resolution seems to be that everything sucks, then what's the point. And I know why I think that way , for this I would like to quote "Planetes" (the manga) for you : " I learned that I couldn't...stop loving people . I don't know if that's good or bad...All I know is that it's a strong power . Way more powerful than nuclear fusion . And I know that every human has it . That's amazing...and a little scary ." The world is as despicable as it is beautiful , and to me , this is exactly the feeling that Asano's manga convey to me . All that being said , I personally consider "Subarashii Sekai" and "Nijigahara Holograph" to be my least favorit manga of Inio Asano . So for all I said , I was thinking more with his other works in mind like "Oyasumi Punpun" , "Umibe no Onnanoko" or "Sekai no Owari to Yoake Mae" . I realise that I went completely overboard with this wall of text , sorry , As you might have understanded , I'm pretty sensitive when people are talking about my favorit manga author , gomen ^^ . Totally unrelated , and I don't even know why I think about it right now , but I have the feeling that "Taiyou no Ie" could be to your taste , if you have place for it in your challenge list . (Don't be fooled by what MAL said , it is completed and readable in it's entirety) . |

I like that quote from Planetes and I think that the quote proves my point in terms of tone, but I think that we just have a different perspective here. You mention, for example, how this the state of mind of this generation, but I consider this a big assumption and generalization. I can see where you're coming from though since I know many people can feel identified with these works, I personally can't. The fact that most of the characters feel that the world is rotten is what kills the enjoyment for me a bit. There is some hope underlying in some stories from Subarashii Sekai and for Nijigahara Holograph the author did something that I just love in stories (one of the characters talks to himself at different points of his life) so that's why I gave them those scores. It's like... well, I appreciate characters like that, but when every character is like that, I just feel like they're feeding off each other's misery. Like I said before it might be a thing of perspective. I doubt I'll ever read Oyasumi Punpun (I'm just put off by the idea, unfortunately) but I might check out Solanin after I've caught up with other stuff. The points you make are very interesting and I'm thankful that you took the time to read my message and present a strong argument to prove your point. I don't think I can agree completely, but it could also have something to do with me having a partial knowledge and feel of this author. Thanks for the other rec as well! It's not something I'd decide to read on my own, but lately the recommendations I've gotten have been interesting, so I might as well check it out too! |

Kinda lost the series charm after the middleish :T. I got mad at no kiss scene also ._., with a manga that started with "Heeeey, you gon be my first sex partna, mate", ending with the main not doing (And stopping himself from doing so) what he wanted to do for almost the whole series which is a simple kiss huge punch on my throat there. And it started so interestingly well -3-. Ah well... |

I really liked the story, it is, after all, my favorite manga.. But I know it had some shortcomings, although I was also looking forward for a kiss scene, it seems to me that it would betray the purpose of the manga. Being something special and unique that they share with each other, you don't throw that away so easily.. Even if the whole premise is they will end up having sex, it's not like you expect the characters to be portraited that way.. But you know that by their interactions with each other during the manga, that it isn't unlikely that they will, only in the future, and I'm okay with that.. In these types of manga, it is the road the characters travel that really matters, not the end, although the end was indeed a bit lacking, it seemed to me as if it wrapped everything nicely. Making you think, is it really worth to go further, only because you're expected to? Urabe and Tsubaki are not that kind of people, and I loved them because of it.. :) I don't know if all that came off as I intended to, but I hope that you enjoyed more because of the characters and the progression (although not in the aspect you seem to have wanted to), than for the ending. Also.. It seems to me that way because I followed it for years, and was very sad when it finally ended. :'( |

My progress with manga has gotten slower (since I've been spending more time on books recently), but here are the interesting stuff I've found in the past week: > Akira and Subarashii Sekai are totally worth the read and I don't really need to give any such analysis as to why they are so good, given that they are the celebrated works from equally celebrated mangakas, Katsuhiro Otomo and Asano Inio respectively. > X-1999 (action, tragedy, shoujo): CLAMP's best work imho (yet to read TRC). The storytelling is great, albeit a bit slow. The characters are well rounded, though there might be a few things that could have been done better. The manga's deceptively pretty, in the sense it has a fair amount of gore and psychological stuff. Also, a striking feature of the storytelling (rather pretty similar to another deceptively pretty manga called Pandora Hearts), is of the grave danger of partial information/prophecies. One thing though, which I suspect will make a lot of the users stay away from this manga, is that it never finished aka it went into hiatus. Still I think its a damn good manga for what it is and people should try it. >Song of the Long March (historical, seinen): Honestly, probably the best ongoing manga out there. The storytelling, the characters, the historical setting, the strategies....everything is top tier. Definitely recommended. |

I promise I will seriously consider it! I've been reading Terra e... (which I hadn't read despite having the anime in my favorites since like 2 years ago) and I'm very surprised by certain differences between the two that change the way I see a couple characters. It's been very good so far though. |

It has some flaws but it was so damn addictive that I couldn't stop reading it at times. |

I haven't completedly read Zashiki Onna but I trust this author to do something good because of Dragon Head. @Skyblue I like the anime more too because although I haven't read the ending of the manga yet, I think that the ending of the anime present a big surprise for me that I'm not sure the manga will have because of the way things have been set so far. |

Hihi Need recs for: ➤Read a manga with a score of or below 7 in MyAnimeList ➤Read a manga with a score of or above 8.5 in MyAnimeList ➤Read a debut manga ➤Read a manga that starts with the same first letter as your username (name starts with J) If possible, something with shounen artstyle (doesn't have to be shounen itself, just the art). Just find it so much easier to read stuff that's eye catching ;) Oh and if it has side romance, big plus. I love shipping people. And one last thing! I like longer mango. I tend to finish ~200 chapters (20 pages) a day if I'm interested in them. If possible, nothing short of ~50 chapters Also, thanks for all recs towards other users. I picked a few interesting ones here and there from this thread, just for the fun of it. |

tsuyokunaru said: 2015 Manga Reading Challenge - Discussion Thread! You may find the Sign Ups as well as more information about this challenge here! Discussion is not necessarily required for the challenge completion, but it will be encouraged! Users and potential participants will probably have different reading backgrounds, and we might even have people who take this as their starting point in manga reading (what can I say, I'm an idealist). Here, we can have a space where people can ask for recommendations or share lists of manga that can fit certain criteria, to help other users who don't know where to start or aren't sure what they may like. Any question about the challenge itself (i.e. criteria explanation, questions about graphics, donating graphics for prizes, other) should be asked in this thread and not the sign ups thread! To keep things neat and avoid spoilers, I recommend using spoiler tags in saying major plot points or when your post has become too long (i.e. longer than 3 big paragraphs). I also recommend using the quote option and @mentions to call the attention of specific users. Hey do you think you could add another challenge to the list? If not that's cool but I was thinking it'd be awesome to have like: Read a light novel series or something on the list so it'd motivate me to finish a light novel series! If not it's cool, I was just wondering! |

@Hyunsuchu Thanks for the suggestion, but I decided before that light novels will not be counted as they are text heavy and don't relate to manga so much. Sorry! @Blankbite You're supposed to post that in the main/sign ups thread again. In other news, two participants banners donated by one of the participants were added to the sign ups post. You may use those if you want to and you may donate more yourself here or through a private message! |

Read a manga that you can relate to yourself is going to be hard.I have no idea why I picked to do this one. Has anyone done it? |

Although, I have not yet read anything that I could later put there. I don't want to go into something that appears to have something I can relate to, and discover that it doesn't (or does, but very superficially). And really, I usually find out that I can relate to a character or situation after I complete a certain title, not before going into it. Still, it may be easier than it seems to be. Think about it, surely you have some hobbies, things that interest you and so on. Maybe you do some martial arts. Then, you could think about yourself as a person and how you appear to others: a loner, somebody stubborn or ambitious, a strong-willed human being, etc. There are many other aspects of yourself that you may find mirrored to a certain degree in fictional stories. Of course, these may be superficious, but they still pertain to you in one way or another. Don't forget, you can always use mangaupdates to search through the tags. |
