Blood C, Elfen Lied, and Corpse Party Tortured Souls for that shock factor if the person watching thinks it's for kids, but if I had to recommended just some good quality anime,Neon Genesis Evangelion, FMAB, and Another would probably be my best choices

elfen lied to prove that anime isn't for children

Yeah, it only proves it is for immature teenagers who equal blood and gore with maturity and intelligence. That is a lot better.... same (although to a lesser extent) for Shingeki. Stop thinking like a lone teenager and think about how actually normal people perceive it, geez...
Also, do not even try to show Key anime to people who actually have relationship experience - you will only emberass yourself.
there is so much wrong with this statement

1) maturity and intelligence are subjective
2) ad hominem attack
3) I doubt anyone watches a cartoon and expects realism

SAO = Best anime ever made ever.
It's natural for a person to deny he's a failure as a human being. That's why he searches for somebody who is more miserable than himself. That's why so much animosity exists on the internet. Those who aren't able to find a more miserable person, turn to the internet and call other people losers, even though they've never met. Just to make themselves feel superior. isn't that pathetic? There's a sense of security that comes from speaking badly of someone else. But that isn't true salvation. — Tatsuhiro Satou

Showed my old best friend Death Note because, you can't really go wrong with Death Note.
Its not over the top ecchi, tits, super powers and screaming Japanese people. Its a nice, chilled out, a clever plotted anime which can be enjoyed by a wide audience, I personally don't know anyone who didn't enjoy Death Note? Its bloody brilliant

I also showed a friend the Dead Leaves film because of how whacky and trippy it was but the style is so cool and the plot is quirky, but you cant keep your eyes off it.

Would definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it!

I first started off with Naruto, and I liked it. Now I'd recommend Beelzebub, it's a nice shounen. Not a lot of episodes, some funny moments, simple plot, lots of characters and a little fanservice thrown in. Yeah I'd recommend that.

I was never actually shown an anime, I just kind of came across a small clip of Inuyasha and thought it looked cool, and from there I watched it, liked it, and got more into anime.

I'd probably recommend an anime to someone based on what kind of genres they like. If it's action, I'd say Naruto or SAO. If it's comedy, I'd say kokoro-connect. If it's romance (and action) I'd say Vampire Knight.

To me it depends what the person's into. For example if there looking for a nice romance I would say Fruits Basket (first anime and manga for me btw), Clannad, or Baka and Test. Or if they want action FMA,Soul Eater, or AOT. So really it just all depends on interest snd what they like.

Something very accessible like Fullmetal Alchemist, which also retains a very distinctive anime style and flavor.

That's a tough one! As many people have said before, depends on the person.

Fullmetal Alchemist is a very solid choice IMO and would appeal to both guys and gals as a first choice... wide range of well developed characters, easily accessible as story starts off small and simple but gives a great sense of its world as their journey moves on...

I'm not a big fan of this series but it's a very effective way to pull gamers into anime. SAO, I've shown it to two friends who had no interest in anime and now their hooked. If I showed them something I like a lot like Code Geass or Monster it would have probably been a turnoff originally and I defintely wouldn't show them any ecchi/SOL series because most would be disgusted/uninterested and wouldn't give it a chance past the first episode. I've even known a non-gamer who got SAO to introduce him to anime so maybe it's just effective for everyone.

I think it depends on the kind of person, that's why I only introduce anime to people who I know won't reject it. Showing someone a highly acclaimed or popular anime doesn't automatically means they'll like it.

One of my university friends likes anything Marvel and DC (a genuine fan), but she'd never watch anime;

a sporty friend of mine liked things with action, and he is still watching Naruto after 2 years;

one of my closest high school friends likes cool things. Boom I got him into a bunch anime;

and another, the only male friend that I know would like slice of life+romance anime, he was easy.

Death Note or Steins Gate because I feel that anyone, even non-anime fans can enjoy them, and it shows that anime isn't all hentai and childish either or relies on shounen violence, taking out 2 birds with one stone. They are just that perfect. Sword Art Online works too, but that one is a little more risky due to the cousin thing in the 2nd half.

Not my favourite mind you, that would be Toradora, but you can't just show Tsunderes to non-anime fans right off the bat.

that would depend on what a person is into as far as a regular movie/tv show is concerned. For most my friends (who are guys) i normally do death note. I wouldnt to Attack on titan or anything still ongoing cuz really you dont know how they are going to end it yet and the worse thing In my opinion is to watch an amazing anime and have a crappy ending that ruins the whole thing. also you dont wanna show anything to top notch because.. well ... if you see the best everything else doesnt measure up. i.e. in cases of more open minded friends that i show full metal alchemist the first anime not brotherhood simply because they can always watch brotherhood later if they liked the first and its kinda hard to watch in the opposite order.

also for friends who are big into mythology and history type things. fate/stay night they can watch zero later

for a female big into romance girly things. NANA even tho it doesnt have a finished manga and probably never will the animes ending wasnt to bad of a leave off point and is enough girly drama to get them hooked. i focus less on proving "animes not kid stuff" and more on just finding something they will enjoy

I was introduced to Fairy Tail by a lot of friends, haha, and totally loved it. It made me want to watch more anime, and I gradually began to realize how many flaws it had XD For those starting to watch anime, I will still show them Fairy Tail, as it is very easy to get into and prepares you for a lot more different kinds of anime. Something like Death Note is very good too, as there are a lot of people who are interested in that type of theme.

Depends on the age of the person, tbh. If they're around my age (17 or higher), then I would recommend Monster, because any Shounen would be treated as "kid stuff".

I'd choose Death Note or Baccano! because both resemble movies, as to me. Moreover Baccano! has Guns'nRoses in opening to catch attention. However they need to be watched until the end to understand them completely, so episodic anime like Cowboy Bebop might be better.

It depends on how old they are, what they seem to be into but here we go.

For girls who are girly age 6-14
Sailor Moon
Full Moon
Shugo Chara
Inuyasha

More girly stuff 12-16
School Rumble
Peach Girl
Chobits (only anime my sister likes so clearly there is something special about it)
Back in the day I would have said Gravitation but I think the new gateway drugs are going to be LoveStage!! and No.6 for the yaoi peoples.

Boys 6-16
Naruto
Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z

Strong gender crossover appeal depending on age
Yugioh
Pokemon
Hamtaro
Yu Yu Hakusho
Naruto (teen girls)
Sailor Moon (why do you think there are bronies? Teen boys secretly like this one)

First anime for Adults without children/adult children
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Michiko to Hachin
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Akira
Project A-ko (kinda a throwback first anime for a lot of people)

First anime for Adults with Children
Studio Ghibli stuff.

Honestly I would just assess what they like outside of anime, and try to get something similar.
The anime community in a nutshell.

Mushishi. Other anime are way too weird: weird style, weird characters, weird storyline... I know that Mushishi also have a lot of weird moments, but it's nothing compared to other shows. They are often too childish.
