Holy crap... Did what I think happened just happen? ._.
No, seriously, did they just kill off one of the main characters without any long, blatant foreshadowing whatsoever? o_o
Dang, this is intense. Have to say I did not see that coming, especially when Mami was pwning that witch so badly.
I wonder if Madoka's wish is going to be to bring Mami back to life? There may be some interesting repercussions to that, though...

Yes, yes they did. Now you know why this isn't your typical mahou shoujo.
Uh.... Guess I'm not getting any Madoka x Mami yuri then?
I'm usually the one who trears up over anything, but there was something about the way this was done that just didn't do it for me...
Guess I was already prepared, with the foreshadowing and everything~

Lol this reminded me of a certain anime but nothing tragic for me since the other was more tragic but I did have a jolt when she died :o
Behold of my awesomeness~
controversial and/or sensitive topics likely devolve into the same repetitive, derogatory, abusive, and harassing comments can no longer be posted.
But my feels.
Oh jeez... D:
Kyubei seems almost as if he's pushing them to become Puella Magi, though he says they don't have to.
Honestly, I think he's been watching Cardcaptor Sakura and xxxHolic in his spare time to do this. e-e;;;
It's all fun and games until someone loses their head. :p
Not super shocking that it happened but that it happened this early. Glad I decided to pick this show up, it's not generally a genre I touch but this has been a pleasant surprise. The art style is quite nice, especially in the maze.
Didn't expect that from magical girl type anime, I am glad I finally picked it up after someone mentioned that it was similar to Stein's Gate which I am enjoying this season.
Saw the first 3 episodes at Otakon 2 weeks ago. After watching the episode all I could think to myself was, 'uh.. what?'. Now watching this again, at home, gave me more of a depressed feeling. Definitely has me interested in watching the rest.

Is it just me or was the giant caterpillar thing with teeth really cute when it was trying to eat Homura?
I'm really enjoying this series so far, I'd avoided it for a long time because I didn't really know anything about it, but now I'm glad I decided to give it a shot.
cute?? i wouldn't say so... *EWW*
it got on my nerves! that huge ugly worm.. crunching like tha.. gosh i don't wanna even think about it! *dizzinesS*
Mami didn't deserve that. T.T

Oh! Hohohohohohohohohohoho So Anime creators had the balls to kill off a main character... Poor girl beheaded. Tho I wasn’t able to spot the beheaded cruxified people flash still scene I’m actually laughing my ass off that it actuallly was the way our dear Charlotte finished off someone. I really didn’t expected such development. I actually thought that Madoka would have signed the contract by the end of the episode....

Somehow I think the dense saturation of Faust references, subject matter considerably darker than what would be expected in a mahou shojo show, and the method in which they gruesomely killed her, getting the point across entirely without directly choosing to show the most severely gory moments might have played a role in this analysis.
Honestly. You can't tell me that this isn't significantly darker and deeper than Shugo Chara. Try and keep in mind what it's dark and deep relative too. It's a genre primarily targeted at females age six to twelve and they made it a particularly gritty seinen, using the themes of the genre to further juxtapose its' dark and deep elements.
Heck, even comparing it to Nanoha, the darkest themes were implied bad parenting late in the first season, and disability in the second season. No one died, the victim of bad parenting was freed from the bad parental figure and the disabled person regained her ability to walk. Nanoha's considered one of the more adult mahou shojo's and it's still nowhere near the ballpark that this show has displayed, and took much longer to build up to the little darkness it had.
Three episodes in and we're speculating about deals with the devil, looking up german legends, suspecting the cute mascot of being demonic in nature, or possibly some manner of djinn. We've seen a suicide attempt, an imperfect family, a disabled boy who, rather than being happy and cheerful despite his inability, has legitimately had his life destroyed by his condition. We're questioning everything and aren't even sure who's a bad guy and who's not. What part of this sounds like you're dealing with a standard mahou shojo that doesn't have significantly more darkness and depth than one would expect?
This is precisely why the show is interesting so far. In fact the deeper I get into this Anime the bigger the urges to search for that Faust book and give it a serious read. And obviously learn from it and unveil who’s actually that Mephistopheles besides being a Devil’s henchmen... and find similarities with our dear Kyubey.
By the way I think Madoka’s family is not imperfect but more like unusual type of family where the dad does the house chores and the mom brings the food to the table...
seishi-sama said: Well...there's numerous reasons actually, starting from most obvious and ending with less obvious.
1. We hear Mami speaking in the end of the episode. That obviously hints at her return later.
2. People think that Madoka is going to wish for Mami to be resurrected, but have anyone actually thought of what was Mami's wish? It's apparently something along the lines of "I don't want to die", which could as well translate as "I don't ever want to die" thus making her unable to die.
3. They have to make Madoka sign the contract by any cost. So, even if the #2 isn't true, another possible option is that everything has been staged somehow to provoke strong emotions in Madoka to make her sign the contract (especially since she wished to be like Mami > to go in her stead). Kyuubei is evil, after all, and Mami is quite likely his henchwoman.
Yep me totally agrees with this post since I suspect from Mami too... Just really... We don’t know the exact wordings of her wish so she could be immortal.... Or like said here too, maybe our dear Kyubey is the one pulling the strings behind the curtains... *shrugs* who knows only future developments will say who’s right and who’s wrong

I suspect that the meat grinder works like this: A victim contracts with Kyubey for a wish and gains the soul gem. The soul gem contaminates automatically, even if the girl doesn't use magic. And if the gem is polluted too much, a MG turns into a witch herself. So, all MGs are forced to fight witches merely to stay alive. The bigger the soul gem, the higher is the spoilage, and so a powerful MG needs to collect more Grief Seeds to purify her gem and stay a MG. This also fits with what Miki said that MGs are in competition with each other: If your own soul gem is dangerously polluted, you won't accept if other MGs try for the same witch. And it's stable: If there's no witches to defeat (and so, no chance to purify your soul gem), soon there will be new witches by default pollution. Maybe - and this would be the most gruesome form, and it's obviously at least not unthinkable - it might even cause MGs to fight between each other.
It's like a drug racket, a cannibalizing pyramid scheme without escape. If my suspicion is mostly on target, the only correct decision is to STAY AWAY, or maybe try to somehow break up the racket. Not to join it.
I suspect it could very well be something along these lines as well. However, I could see one possible method of escape:
Die, releasing yourself from the game, and then have someone wish you back to life, with them taking your place in the scheme and setting you free in the process. Perhaps as part of a bargain with the 'authority' force that your replacement will be stronger. ;)
Harharhar Yup... Only futute episodes will tell us if these assumptions are correct... or completely mistaken... Any way, if you sign a contract with that damn thingie called Kyubey you’re bound to kill those witches for the rest of your damned cursed life... Seriously being a MG is a bless or a curse in this world.... a curse to me... There has to be reason why Homura wants Madoka to stay away from this so much... obviously besides Madoka having a huge potential, even the posibility for Madoka to be stronger than Homura... hmmm...
leti_ said: Am I the only one who think this is cute?:
Hahahahaha... Is not exactly cute but I did find our dear friend Charlotte fun... Just look at it... Was a little cute dolly and suddenly turns into a Jack in the Box like thingie, more like a dark snake with a clown-like head.... A friggin’ nightmarish shi.... but it was fun to see it have fun nonetheless...
Surprising, sudden death of main character after finding a new meaning in her life was utterly terryfying and gross... poor girl... Oh and irony of life dude... The episode’s title was “I’m not afraid anymore” xDDDDD I’m not afraid... yeah sure... I’m not afraid to lose my life at is and wishing for something like that never happening again...
That damn thing Kyubey not even flinched after seeing the poor Mami being beheaded.... Seriously its expression never changed, well so far it has never changed, but besides that its voice tone never wavered... never changed... it always uses the same tone... It’s so friggin scary... show some emotion at least!!! But nope... it never shows any... *shivers*
It’s funny that dear Kyubey never mentioned rules until this episode... but they’re just as ambigous as the fact that the wish should be made carefully... also considering if you make a wish for other person... Means that if you make the wish the wrong way then it will turn out another way intended.... Really amking this wish is really tricky... just as tricky as Russian’s Guy Gun figure... hmmmm...
Also I’m kinda speculating what could the witches scenarios and themes mean.... Relating them to the Sins... tho I’m not so sure yet... we still got lots to see I’m pretty sure of that...Well lesee what happens next!

I have a feeling Kyubey isn't all that he seems to be...
Wow, a death so early really was surprising. It is hard to feel too much for her this early on but i did like her character. Maybe a wish will bring her back?
One of the main characters dies early in the series? This anime is truly something else! And this episode has an ED~
Once again the Mami's and Homura's battle scene really in it's own class) but sadly Mami died after realizing that she's no longer alone. Maybe Madoka will wish for her revival?

What happened to Mami was a bit unexpected. I mean, I thought it was possible for her to die then and there, but not in that fashion. That thing bit her fuc***g head off!!! When that happened, I couldn't stop laughing, b/c it was eerily similar to a time my cat caught and ate a field mouse. Just... bit it's fuc***g head off!!! Good god!
WOW, she died. And i was so attached to her too. I've known her for full 2 episodes. Man, this show is unique. This excuses the previous 20 minutes of boring shit in this episode. 10/10. Oh man!
wow wasn't expecting that at all. It takes guts to kill off a character so early on, so i tip my hat to you shaft that was well done (implying she's actually dead).
It also seems felt like I took something prior to this episode, wtf Shaft.
Also, am I weird for liking Homura the best so far?
That was epic, didn't expect it at all. I hope they don't wish her back to life. I liked the characters I just hate it when anime's don't have consequences to stuff like this.
Yeah, at the time I watched this I was pretty much thinking it would be something along the lines of your usual magical girl shows. I'm not even into the genre that much. I've seen Sailor Moon series when I was a kid, and I liked it, but never actually followed to see other shows like it.
I was told I should see it because it "has a twist and is well worth it" - okay then, I reluctantly did.
I never actually look into who produces these shows, so I had no idea whatsoever if the group that did this usually make this kind of anime, or other.
I was expecting something along the lines of SM, just with different art style.
So there's a bright, colorful show full of cheerful teeny girls with magical powers that fight cute "witches", and WHAM!!! This shit just got serious! (Pardon my language).
Oh geez, I see some of you say "I wasn't expecting her to die that soon" - and I'm confused. Why on earth would you expect somebody to actually die (and like this?!) in a magical girl show? I mean, I maybe have little experience, true, but aren't young girls the main target of this genre?
I was hit in the head so hard I couldn't believe my eyes. It was a game changing moment of this show. When I say I was grinning to the screen, it probably won't make me look good, but I was. Not because I liked how she died - that was actually much more gruesome than those gore anime, it had actual impact. I liked it because it surprised me, amazed me. It was powerful and oh boy, it was there specifically to make me feel how I felt.
They just did it, no matter how this would continue, this moment of amazement would forever stay in my memory as one of the most outstanding moments of anime that I know.
O___O Someone died?! Holy shizzle that was unexpected. *shudders* That was a horrible way to die... and horrible timing. Listen to Homura, people! D: This isn't all sparkles and magic.
People weren't kidding when they said it twisted the genre... wowwwww.
I think my favourite character so far's Sayaka. Ahhh I hope she doesn't die. And I hope that guy she was gonna wish for doesn't die either. oAo
That was... clever. Now I'm scared that everyone will die. o-o
Was this supposed to be the big "BAM"? It sure was surprising, but I'm perfectly sure they are just gonna wish her back. Why wouldn't they? :/
I like the realistic elements so far, not just a normal Mahou Shoujo where no serious thing happens to the main characters.
Kyubey just creeps me out more and more as this show goes on. This thing has a completely callous disregard for human life, and traps people into horrifying lives by exploiting their suffering. Also, its design reminds me of Hoshimaru from Narutaru: initially it seems VERY cute, but the unblinking, puppet-like expression quickly becomes unnerving, especially when paired with its actions.
I'm wondering: will Madoka be roped in by Kyubey in order to resurrect Mami? No doubt he will try.
It will be interesting to see if it also basically mirrors the development of Narutaru: seemingly normal with a slight creep factor in the first two episodes, then increasingly becoming more and more nightmarish after a shocking third episode.
I like Akemi. She might be selfish and anti-social, but she seems to be the only person looking out for Madoka and her blue-haired friend. I'm starting to see why she was trying to murder that evil little fur-ball in the first episode.
5/5. The slow pacing of this episode revealed a lot about the characters. And that witch. And Mami. Damn.
I knew Mami was going to die after she started being happy that she wasn't going to be alone anymore. I have a feeling she might get wished back though.
I'm so shocked Mami was killed! After the heartfelt stuff with Madoka I should have expected a tragedy but this was something else. When her body was hanging from the Witch's mouth, it was awful. The art in the mazes is so creepy.
I feel like Homura has some sort of personal vendetta against Kyubey. I might be wrong but I can't shake the feeling. I'm looking forward to when Madoka and Sayaka finally become magical girls.
