I just started watching Steins;Gate myself but perhaps The Girl Who Leapt Through Time could work. It is about time travel and it's a great movie so you should be able to watch it in one sitting.

Well, Production IG generally does animation very well, testament to the quality of Seirei no Moribito and the Ghost in the Shell movies. The former is generally slower paced than what you're used to judging from your list but the action scenes are far from second rate. I recommend GitS if you want to get a nice dose of cyberpunk, introspective themes and great fight scenes.

If you liked Cowboy Bebop then try the sister series Samurai Champloo. It's directed by the same dude and combines hip hop with feudal Japan to make for an interesting experience. Of course, the fight scenes are top notch as one would expect from Bebop. I'll also throw out a movie done by Studio Bones called Sword of the Stranger. It basically has everything you're looking for. The seriousness, the fights, the animation, etc. Type in "sword of the stranger fight" on Youtube and have a little preview if if you don't believe me. Well, I hope I helped!

@hao-sama

Do check out the titles I mentioned above. The first two are are seinen than shounen but it's a great change of pace without getting too much outside shounen bounds. There are also Fate/stay night, Fate/Zero, and Tetsuwan Birdy Decode that are similar to what you're looking for. Durarara!! and Baccano! are not your typical battle shounen but they should fit as well.
Thanks, I'll have a look at seirei, and i remember watching a scene from sword of the stranger on youtube ages ago, it was great :D

Glad I could help. If you're watching Seirei no Moribito I'll warn you that, while it starts and finishes with a bang, that middle sections are paced fairly slowly. It becomes less action and more introspective with a lot of focus on characters and relationships. I personally loved this part of the show but if you were drawn in by the spectacular fight scenes then you might be disappointed that there are actually only a handful. Not that I think it's a problem though, since you muscled your way through Neon Genesis Evangelian fine.

You'll understand after you watch the first three episodes.
If you still don't like it at the end of the 3rd episode, then it's probably not for you.

The characters in Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica just have the appearance of your stereotypical cute magical girls, but the story and atmosphere are dark and serious. It's actually shocking at many points. It's really pretty cool.

So it's actually the opposite, children should not watch it unless you want them to be crying and having nightmares. It's rated R in fact. They wouldn't understand it either. It's definitely adults only.

Anyone mind giving me some recommendations based on my list just no Harems please I can't stand them.
An anime that has both action and romance would be preferred but any recommendation is still appreciated.

Just finished watching FMP! (second time thou ;3) and now I'm looking for an anime with the same feeling, action/thriller with some drama, comedy and romance.

Some other animes I also really enjoyed (which I think got about the same feeling) is Steins;Gate, FMA Brotherhood, and Code Geass.
If anyone recognizes themself once being in this situation and knows an anime that I might enjoy, please let me know ;3

Watch out for Fruits Basket though since it's made for girls in mind. In other words it's shoujo anime.
If you like that kinda thing then you might also like Kanamemo ;)
Other thing I didn't know you have already seen Clannad because you haven't added it to your list

Clannad is very good, but I didn't recommend it because it is harem and you said you didn't want that, though "the girl" is decided on three or four episodes before the end, and what follows after is some pretty good plot resolution. There's not much "fan service" -- the characters, comedy and drama stand on their own without that nonsense. In particular, the main guy is a good, decent, strong character.

It's still good for general audiences - sure it's touchy/feely feel good, but my son, brother and his son all really enjoyed it. And there are enough fist fights between several of the guys to keep it from getting to sappy ;)

Forgot a couple

Mushishi - it's episodic but a few of the episodes are what you're looking for - some even have sad endings.

Ga-Rei: Zero (big time tragic end)

Not sure but Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica might also fit - not only do several of the main characters die but also I don't consider it to have a happy ending either.

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai

.hack//SIGN and .hack//Roots have bits of drama.

Solty Rei - More actiony but has drama thrown in throughout

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - for sure

Wolf's Rain - Pretty depressing throughout

I've seen more moives that are sad than shows. If you're interested you might want to check out...

Pretty much anything by Makoto Shinkai (5 Centimeters per Second, The Place Promised in our Early Days, Voices of a Distant Star)

Brave Story - it's a fantasy adventure that starts off sad

Grave of the Fireflies - definitely

Night on the Galactic Railroad
