Now as you mention it... I remembered certain scene from The Pianist, where a young girl was playing violin at the train station before everyone was taken to the concentration camp. But IIRC it happened becuse the soldiers made her play and after that

As fo the episode. The best so far. Emotion with action - that's what this series supposed to be :) Oh, next week will be heartbreaking with (Spoilers, real spoilers)
But if they really try to put those three scenes (mentioned above) in the next episode it will be one hell on tear jerker. Can't wait for that.

wow that was quite a lot to take in, glad to see shion's still brave enough to save the baby despite the chaos that surrounded him at the time
clearly yoming's messed up >_> i wonder if/how shion's gonna meet with karan based on that message, id think itd be quite tough
more nezumi karaoke lulz
im guessing safu is somehow related to the forest people otherwise why in the world would Elyurias appear to her like that, wonder what she did to those two peops though
next epi looks quite promising and its the pre-final episode, i hope they dont screw anything up after this far =I

I can't believe there are only two episodes left =-(

I really loved Nezumi's song, but the way the music progressed into like... a rock ballad kinda killed it for me. Unnecessary traps set in beautiful song is unnecessary.

Waiting for next week's episode is slow torture!

Dogkeeper (Inukashi) is a girl, Sion had always referred to her as a guy and when he touched her shoulders he was surprised and commented "you're a..." before being cut off. Not trying to sound snarky, but anyone who has actually felt the skin of someone of the opposite sex, knows women have softer skin then men.

May be the director should have been more clear considering the audience.
Now that's sounding snarky

Well I think the scene was putted that way on purpose, Nazis also tried to create a perfect world... and treating people like nothing is a reocurring trope in many dystopian novels/movies

Oh god, that yelling out Sion's name (in the preview) - why would that happen?? I hope no one important dies too.

Plus that scene with the Dogkeeper- I thought she was a girl, until they referred to her as "he" a few episodes back. So I've though he was a guy even now, but then Sion feels his/her shoulders... she's a girl?

I can honestly only conclude that he's just more comfortable with touching a man's bare shoulders rather than a cute girl's~

Because, I'm going to believe that Dogkeeper is a female and that is that 8I

NOOOOOOOO D:

Then that scenes makes no sense to me :/
I took it that we were to perceive Dogkeeper as a guy
Then be all WTFFFs when Dogkeeper is molested
And reacts so frightened and makes you think girl~
Like Dogkeeper has issues with putting up a 'guy' front
To feel stronger and forget maybe a bad past experience as a girl...
And with Shion being confused and all.
Because he is obviously not too god with girls xD;;;;

I'm calling it. Dogkeeper is a girl! Everyone was thrown off by the shoulders, but I'm betting Shion pressed against her chest and felt the breasts during that moment.

Awesome episode btw. Am I the only one that got a "jews being escorted to a concentration camp" feel when they were in the back of the truck and Nezumi was singing? Then they dumped them into the chutes as if they were trash. This is getting deep. Wish there were more than two episodes left :(

People may call me a stupid fangirl for keeping this rated as a 10 but what I absolutely love about this series is Asuno's complete and utter disregard for gender and sex-role stereotyping that is so prevalent in most anime. Something about this episode sent a chill down my spine that I do not usually get from watching anime.

I really can't wait for next week's episode.

What? Are you SURE? I've heard some people say that Inukashi gives off female vibes in the novel, and the novel never really speaks about/confirms the gender.
Regardless, I suppose this is going to be like Crona from soul eater where we can think whatever we think because they never confirm the real gender.

Well, in novel Inukashi was always called "boy" , "he". When he/she first appeared even shion was wondering is it a guy or a girl.

When I watched the anime I had no doubt that it's a girl, I was 100% sure of <her> gender. But then the novel has really tangled my mind... I do believe that keeping inukashi's gender as a secret is like a goal and all misunderstandings like this http://i51.tinypic.com/soxowm.png are telling us that it's a guy HOWEVER others like Inukashi's voice is saying the opposite....

About that "Inukashi's boobies bumped into shion" theory... If she/he is a girl then she's a flat chested one, so nope this time :D

After all -> does the gender really matters? I like to see Inukashi as the interesting person, not as a girl or a boy.

What a cliffhanger. I'm a little disappointed that they ended up sticking all the action back in the last few episodes. I feel like the show could've been a lot better if those middle episodes were a lot less filler-like.

And I always that that Inukashi was a girl, and I thought that this episode only strengthened this theory. But it seems like not everyone's in agreement with this. o _o

Of course not, let's just die waiting for the next one (wich seems great!). It was a good episode, better than episode 8, but I still think that 20 minutes are so short to explain everything. This episode really confirmed it for me. Inukashi = GIRL!

The way she cried after being touched by that scum, the way Sion reacted after touching her shoulders: "You're a..." (GIRL!) Come on guys, she be female!

I think that Rikiga believes she's a guy, which is why he said what he said that whole "A young girl doesn't look that much like a boy" at the beginning of the ep. And I think that's what Sion thought too, up until the whole hugging/shoulder-touching moment.

Also, gah cliffhanger. With this AND Mawaru Penguindrum's ending, I am dying for next Thurs.

Yes, I bet Sion can tell if someone is female or male from touching their shoulders because he's cool like that.

I totally think Inukashi is a girl, and that she pretends to be a guy so she wouldn't be harassed and that's the reason for her freaking out so much from getting licked. YEAHYEAHYEAHYEAH? But this ep didn't confirm shit about her/his gender.

And of course, the whole gender thing doesn't REALLY matter, but there isn't any harm in talking about it.

I'm thinking more along these lines too. The main reason why it confuses me is that it never occurred to me that Inukashi could be anything but a girl. I know gender isn't always totally easy to tell in anime but to me Inukashi looks, sounds and acts female so I don't understand how you could think it was a boy to start with. What happened in this episode has just really thrown me off because if Inukashi is a girl pretending to be a boy then I don't think she's doing a very good job. Although Sion was obviously tricked. XD

Also, the way Inukashi was holding the blanket around him/herself seems to indicate that s/he's a girl too.

In anime Inukashi is thought to be a girl....
In novel Inukashi thought to be a guy....

so it's kinda confusing, but I still believe on my first impression <that it's her> .

Here's a quote from the novel:

Was he a boy? A girl?
Sion couldn't make the distinction. The stranger's pointed chin and round eyes reminded him of a small rodent. He was very small and thin, and reached only up to about Sion's shoulders in height.
"He lives here," Nezumi said. "I don't know his real name. We just call him Inukashi."

About that towel... Whatever Inukashi is , it (I will call Dogload "it" now XD) had to cover itself with towel because Inukashi was acting a girl for sale. Inukashi has also put on a blonde wig!

I'm still reading the novel so if I'll find any more clues I will report here :D Damn you Inukashi!

Well, obviously she is fairly flat chested, but she is always wearing loose shirts, so you can't tell. They don't have to be very big for you to feel the difference between a male and a female. Not very big at all.

I gotta say, Inukashi's VA really did a good job at portraying her character. While I'm convinced that Inukashi is a guy (because of the character design, he's flat you see), there's this nagging feeling inside me that I may be wrong, and that's because of the VA. There are VAs who can sound like a boy, but several times Inukashi's VA sounded like a girl lowering her voice, which makes you doubt the character's gender.

Cliff hanger ending sadly very few stories with bl themes end happy I am hoping there will be at least one for Nez and Sion and the way they protect each other is lovely but something is gonna set off Sion we have seen him turn violent before there is more to Sion then it seems and when it comes to Nezumi I think the I want to save everyone Sion could turn into a killer he demostrated that once before when he attacked his mom's friend for offering Nez a job in prostitution.

Yes Sion realized Dogkeeper was a girl but has been portraying herself as a boy as in that area it is probably safer to be viewed as boy.

I thought it was extremely sad when Nezumi started singing and afterward he says something like "A song can't save anyone". Because he's been to the correctional facility before so he knows they're all going to die or be tested on and tortured and all he can do is sing to try to calm them before the real suffering begins.

And another thing. I have a feeling that this wasn't the fist time No.6 attacked West Block like that, so some people must be aware of it's true nature. In the novel, I think it says No.6 is responsible for destroying the town West Block once was. Why can't they appeal to the other cities for help? I don't think they're the same as No.6, surely they would want to protect human rights.

And I don't know why everybody's so confused over Inukashi's gender. Earlier in the episode, Rikiga called her a boy, indicating that everyone's assumed she's a boy, then later when Sion grabs her shoulders, he's surprised, saying "You're --". The only thing that he could say that makes sense is girl.

Besides, in the preview, you can see Inukashi's cleavage.

She's definitely a girl.

I always assumed Inukashi was a girl even though he/she/it was ambiguously portrayed.

Anyway the "cleaners" are really effective at what they do and if they do that "Cleaning Duty" every year before the Holy Day, does the surviving people on the West Block have to rebuild every time too? And that's the correctional facility? I thought it was deep inside the urban sprawl of No.6 somehow or deep under it's ground, not in some deserted area and built like a friggin' fortress complete with a wide moat!
You see there's no need to wonder where your god is,

I got surprise as well from the place the cleaners took the people to
I thought is was inside the city as well
but Gosh! it was a frighful!
now, hmmm there's a question
does the cleaners do that "cleaning duty" every year? maybe not...?

about Inukashi, since the first time I saw her I knew right away that she's a girl, I didn't dount even!
even when Rikiga-san said what he said, I doubt that he may knows her gender
and finally when Shion grabs her shoulders and got surprise, it 'cause he felt that she's a girl
-I saw this before in a manga when a girl pretend to be a boy in all boys school, and when one guy grabed her, he had the same reaction Shion has when he grans Inukashi's shoulders-
I don't think that Inukashi pretent to cover her gender or something but more like, she used to be that way

Haha... no, I did mean the "sand" part above, but in this part of what I said, I mean something that happens in the novel and manga only. I don't think it's possible for it to happen in the anime anymore. It's a spoiler for the *book* and *manga* but if you don't plan to read them, you can have a look at this part:

in this episode, when he was trying to prevent Shion in insistence from saving that child, the flashback of what his grandmother was telling him crossed my mind for a second..
add to, when Inukashi was so scared and passied off from him for not show off earlier while he was indifferent, I dount if Nezumi will take the same time in waiting if Shion was in Inukashi's place with that molested man, haha I swear he will show up even before that man lay a finger on Shion xD
I kinda understand more why he had to struggle that much from accepting his feeling for Shion, it wasn't easy to change the way he raised in

Yeah I agree except for the tsundere part. Nezumi has given up and completely let his barriers down now. He promised not to keep secrets from Shion. And now he understands how Shion felt (belittled; not an equal) and he doesn't want Shion to feel that way anymore either. So I think "tsun" is mostly over and now he's going to be mostly "dere." ;).

not "completely" xD
even he said those things but still -through this episode's events- he wasn't able to be so open about his thoughts to Shion, he can't tell Shion about everything, and he still worried
-it's like human being, can't change easily-

True. But I can't wait to get to this part in the novels because I got the impression from the anime that Nezumi didn't mean to keep what was happening a secret from Sion like he was doing before. It seemed to me more like he was trying to find the right words and couldn't. Especially considering what he said to Inukashi and Rikiga about it when Sion had left already. "I'm not sure if we'll agree when the time comes. Let's see how the dice fall." Also, I have a suspicion that the manhunt was even more brutal and thorough, and *earlier* than he imagined. He looked genuinely shocked when the first explosions erupted. Not just horrified at how bad it was, but surprised as well. But I realise I could be wrong...

I got your main point and it might be true!
