I believe this arc has some slow episodes, but occasionally they are perfection. Last episode had Crocodile and Mr.1 saving Luffy, Luffy reaching Garp, and Jimbei protecting Whitebeard stand out to me. The moment Inazuma popped out of Ivan's hair was also awesome!! But this entire episode had me crying, or screaming, or a mix of both. This, Whitebeard and Squards episode, and Mihawk's episode are easily some of my favorites. The bottleneck of the Beards and the arrival of Whitebeard into the plaza is also amazing! But, this episode seriously blew me away in every respect. I had to run around for a second I was filled with so much energy!!! Marineford is amazing in many many ways...
I guess I'll speak chronologically about the parts that moved me. A small one but one I much appreciated was how devastated Helmeppo was at Coby's downfall. He was so relieved he was okay and he vowed to get revenge on Straw Hat! It was a cute and moving moment that showed how much Helmeppo cares about his boy!
As for the Garp confrontation, it was so packed full of emotions it hurt. It only hit me when watching the recap that Garp was calling Luffy, "Mugiwara no Luffy", that he was referring to him as his pirate name, as a statement that he saw Luffy as an enemy, a pirate, not his grandson. It's a nice little thing that made the scene so much better. Then his line "IF YOU CAN'T KILL ME ACE WILL DIE", got to me, it was like, he was telling Luffy to kill him at some place in his heart. He was reminding him, give me your all to save Ace, for I cannot be the one to do so. The flashbacks had me chuckling and smiling and the second I did I cursed my fate, THEY GOT ME, I exclaimed, they got me to care about these two even more than I already did. They were cute and funny but very sad at the same time, Garp was always trying to train Luffy to be part of the navy so he wouldn't have to fight against him one day and because of that he's been ready for this moment forever. I'm sure he already knew what it was like to have a son on the other side of the law after all. And he fought Roger while still having sympathy for him, so for Luffy to exclaim he will take Roger's place, a position Garp is famous for fighting against, it pulls at my heart!!!
Ultimately for Luffy to realize he has to act and for Garp to be unable to do so and pull his punch being launched down head first, it was one of the most tragic moments in One Piece for me. The way Garp remembered raising these two kids it reminded me of Luffy thinking of the good times before punching Usopp out. And, to top it all of, Garp's acceptance as he fell and Sengoku's immediate understanding just made it a highlight of Marineford for me. Somehow Garp pulling his punch is so much better than a climactic fight, Garp may refuse to budge when it comes to the navy, this is the side he fights for, but he will not be the one to kill his children. Gosh.... What a beautifully, and horribly sad moment, and one I absolutely loved.
Then of course I need to mention Galdino! I at first trusted Mr.3 was helping Luffy, then when he swung at Ace I doubted him, but he came through and he came through so strong. I looked back at my first thoughts on him and I was critical, I thought he was boring, I thought his power was ridiculous, and I didn't like him very much. Yet, now he's one of my favorite characters. I adore Buggy, Mr. 3, and Bon Clay with my whole heart, they are three wonderful characters and I think Mr. 3 would be on a top 10 non Straw Hats list for me now like definitely. So let's talk about that scene overall.
The whole scene when Luffy reached Ace was awesome. I've been reading One Piece from the beginning recently and it dawned on me how amazing Oda has always been at these high intensity climax situations where there are multiple parties at play. You can see this kind of outcome with Helmeppo taking Coby hostage in episode 2 or 3. While Luffy is fighting Morgan, Coby is held hostage, Luffy punches Helmeppo while he holds Coby at gunpoint, and as Morgan swings for Luffy's head Zoro slashes Morgan down solidifying him as a crew member. Here we had Kizaru shoot the key but Mr.3 see it in front of his eyes as he wakes up, Sengoku show his power as he turns into a giant Buddha, Luffy begs the lucky Mr.3 to cover Ace in wax as Luffy fills his bones with air as to deflect the punch yet retains the damage from Sengoku's haki, and as they fall Mr.3 makes the key, Luffy unlocks the cuffs, and Ace flies off with Luffy and Mr.3 in hand. All in a short, intense, and amazing sequence. So many parties at play, so much going on, and a wonderful flow you can see from the beginning of One Piece, Oda is amazing. I loved it.
Yet, the thing I loved most as I started saying was Mr. 3's character arc. Through losing Bon Clay he realized how much he cared about him deep down, and through traveling with Luffy he started to care about him too and helped him fight Magellan. What I had thought was the worst case was Mr.3 went to kill Ace to blend in and get through the war unscathed, yet he didn't, he had the confidence to sneak through a vent and steal an executioner outfit all so he could save Ace. It was all for his friend, and it was heroic as heck. He did not want Bon Clay's 'death' to be in vain!!!! And he did so much, I also think it was probably somewhat for Luffy as he did reflect on Luffy before he even reflected on Bon Clay and they have gotten close. He has started to be absolutely true to himself and be courageous and selfless, he found things to fight for other than his self interest which we saw was his bread and butter ever since his Buggy alliance. Since Impel Down this boy has grown!!! Him yelling to Luffy about being here out of respect for his late comrade meant my life was made.
Whitebeard is blessed to have Ace be saved. The guys who ended up freeing Ace had a lot of help, some luck from Garp being on the other side, and some coincidence, but a whole lot of morale, and tenacity. WOOOOO. Now Ace is in the battle and we saw just how strong this boy can be. Now, I suppose this becomes all out fighting, huh? |
