You know that bittersweet feeling you get right after finishing an amazing anime? That feeling of losing some new friends you made of saying goodbye to an amazing adventure?...

So I just finished watching/reading Elfien Lied...
and I'm kind of depressed after finishing it. This happens after I finish any amazing anime and it's really hard to get over an ending. You become part of the adventure and then it all comes to an end even though it scars your heart forever.

I'm gonna finish off Cowboy Bebop soon but I'm still depressed about Elfen Lied :( How do I get over this post-anime depression? It's really difficult to move on and when you think back to your old anime friends it feels so bad :( What do you guys do to get over this feeling?

You find another one and continue going in that cycle.

I don't know if I've ever had that though. Hm.

I cannot say I have ever had this problem.
But enjoy the good thing, watch it again

My advice is to find another anime that's similr in terms of genre. For example; when I finished Kare Kano, and realized that there would be no second season, I was feeling pretty down. Then I went and watched Ouran Highschool Host Club and cheered up. Anime is like a vicious cycle of pleasure and tears, but it's all good in the end!

I dunno really, I just let it be. Sadly though, I find it hard starting a new anime if the one I previously watched had a sad ending. But I do kinda enjoy the feeling of "depression" after watching a great anime series. Otherwise I cry to my friends or parents, even, how sad or how crappy the ending was. I'm usually good with happy endings and can start off with watching another anime.

Read a happier manga like NANA, it's about sluts so what's not to like.

You can always re-watch it again sooner or later.
However, watching it again after finishing it would be pointless.

Try watching other animes that you might like similar to what you had just finished.

Convert your sadness into rage. Just watch a few more shows before you realize there is a lot of crap in the anime world. Then you can be pissed that nothing is as good as what you consider "amazing".

Watch more anime pretty much.

Maybe watch something thats more upbeat and happy.

Like a slice of life or comedy.

Once you start laughing again you'll look back and appreciate the depression.

^^^Actually, yes.^^^

I don't know that I've had PAD . . . I like that . . . but I have often experienced a certain emptiness at the end of something that really "got to me." And as others have suggested, the best thing you can do is start a new one and make new friends with new characters, some of which may remind you of your old ones.

Don't try to replace the anime you are so fond by seeking anime "just like it." Other shows may share similarities but, if the show you love is really that good, there won't be anything "just like it" and that is a good thing.

I think one of the reasons I enjoy helping with recommendations is it allows me to visit old friends every time I run through my list looking for things others might like.

As they say, get back on the horse.

It will go away eventually. Might take a few weeks like for me. Although i've had post-anime depression twice so far.

To make things easier, rewatch the anime 2-3 times, if that doesnt help. Start reading the manga, when you hit the latest chapter, it will be a struggle for a few days, then re-read the manga twice. At that point you cant do anything else. Its like a drug addict thrown into closed room with no drugs. :D

If anything, re-watching/reading and/or looking for further materials related to the serie will make you feel it all the more. Best feeling.

I don't feel post-anime depression unless it's a very serious show. I just finished Phantom Requiem for the Phantom, and the ending did leave me with a sour aftertaste that lingered for quite a while.
Sometimes, I just enjoy the bittersweet feeling, because that would basically mean the anime successfully accomplished what it had set out to do.
If I want to get over it, I just watch/read something very different (maybe a comedy after something like Elfen Lied would be nice)...

Maybe read a manga or two... or watch more TV... until I get over that feeling and decide to hunt for a new anime to watch, and finally, let myself enjoy that new anime.

ARIA ARIA ARIA
ARIA?
ARIA ARIA!

ahem

When I get 'post-anime depression' - which is rare - it's normally more a short but sharp realisation that this show is over and then normally later that day/the next morning I'll be really thoughtful about what I just watched (Dennou Coil in particular did this). I think the best treatment isn't to search out another show, though it can help, but to find a kind of resolution to your feelings within yourself, how you felt, and understand that this beautiful 5/10/20/43 (lol LoGH) hour romance has to eventually draw to an end.

After all, anime is serious business.

Surprisingly sage advice, and not just in terms of anime.

This is also a good idea. Rushing back into things just muddies the experience. Like a good cheese/wine, let it mature.

Why would anyone want to get over that feeling? It's awesome. My longest PAD was over one month, I think. Lately though it's one or two days at max. Watching more anime usually drives it off, but I seldom watch anything during PADs since I want to savor the moment.

I so know this feeling.
I usually look up, if it was adapted from an Manga, and look if the Manga goes beyond the Anime.
If yes, then I read it :)
Well, if there isn't, then I usually just watch something else.
It is usually away, after a week to a month.

I know how you feel. Whenever i finish a good anime/manga i sorta float around in la-la land for a while just kinda savoring what i just finished. In that time i sorta browse art/fanart sites like deviant art and dwell over how awesome or adorable X or Y was. It lasts for a while but then i start the cycle all over again.

There are animes that have literally made me depressed/sad or in some cases utterly confused about my life, such as Neon Genesis Evangelion/End of Evangelion or Grave of the Fireflies. (Eva had me spinning in circles for about a week before i actually even understood what the fuck i just saw. this is currently my longest PAD to date) sometimes i loved a particular character/couple to death and i haunt the fanart sites specifically for stuff of them.

I'm hunting for anime/manga's best stories they can offer so i'll probably be at this for a while. (something tells me i'll be trawling forever.)
