According to Investor Relations released by GONZO, the auditor of GONZO canceled the release of the audit report for the fiscal year 2008 because they strongly doubted the retainment of GONZO to be a going concern. GONZO will be ousted from the stock market soon.

The auditor pointed out that:
1. The amount of debts of GONZO has been in excess of their total asset for two years.
2. Some of the debts borrowed from the banks are overdue.
3. The restructuring plan presented by GONZO is unreliable.

GONZO stated that the good sales of "Strike Witches" and "Afro Samurai" contributed to the improvement of the operating income. However, the failures in other segments of the business expanded the amount of the total loss (3.4 billion yen).

They also mentioned that one of the production contracts of anime was canceled.

Alive TFE, I suppose.

I'd buy them out if I had the money. :D I still believe they'll be fine though...the anime industry won't be the same without Gonzo.

I think so too. Just hope that Gonzo will come back without anything stopping them.

As for the anime, I haven't informed about the detail.
I also concern about it but anything can happen due to the historic recession. It's just my guess, though...

It will begin without any trouble unexpectedly, don't you think?

^ ADV is already in trouble. They almost went bankrupt a while ago.

I'm not surprised with this news. Gonzo hasn't produced much of worth in recent years, and coupled to the recession... yeah. To be expected. I don't care for Gonzo anyway, so it doesn't matter to me.

And yet they keep making over-budget boring won't sell crap when they could be pooling their resources into producing anime with good storylines that will sell. Poor GONZO. I'd been waiting for several series from them, but if this keeps up, well, that'd be the end of that.

That minus the "Poor GONZO"-part, serves them right since they haven't produced a single good show since Gankutsuou.

Let me put it this way, the only hit since Vandread that Funi has had is Strike Witches, all that quality and that is the one.

Japan saddens me.

When they started to get involved with non-anime related business. Making video games, MMORPGs, other random stuff, thus increasing the number of workers, etc, etc. Of course, the anime sales also played some part in it, but not the most important one (and Gonzo sales aren't even that bad in comparison with some other companies).

Seriously, they haven't produced anything of interest to me in the last couple of years, so it's not like I'm missing anything because they're "dying." Proof that they need to do something, and fast.

Also, Gonzo has made other great anime besides Afro Samurai such as their adaptation of Romeo and juliet, Basilisk, Peace Maker Kurogane and many more. I'm sure if some of the users here had taken a look at what it's made, they'd be surprised by their selections. They tend to make animes based on manga/novel with substance unlike other anime studios. cough* a studio that starts with K* cough.

This is sad, gonzo has produced some good anime these last 2 seasons (saki, Linebarrels of Iron, etc.) many plans of extending series are being dropped :(

All I can say that a good part of it is our fault for not buying enough dvds and stuff, but 3.4 billion yen is a lot still.

Gonzo got into so much trouble because they raised their own capital and took the risks (which didn't pay off). Other studios might produce even worse shows and have worse sales, but most remain relatively safe.

That said, Gonzo was incredibly talented. Kaleido Star, Last Exile, and Gankutsuou proved that they could make amazing shows when conditions were ideal.
