Good mature action anime

Im looking for an "mature" action anime with a lot of character development, plot twists, and a likable protagonist whose life gets turned upside down. There are a whole bunch of anime out where the main character is a "female dog", too powerful or they have this sense of righteousness where they can change someone with "words of wisdom." Id prefer if the anime just has a few characters you get to really understand and like. I dont mind ecchi as long as it doesnt become the main point in the story. I also prefer that the anime have really good action scenes. Oh yeah and id like the anime to have a female character that does more than just scream.

Naruto ( especially naruto basically the epitome of everything i hate about an anime)

Claymore
Deadman's Wonderland ( Tho the main character did get on my nerve sometimes)
Samurai Champloo
Black Lagoon (i loved this anime!)
Phantom (I havent finished this yet but i seem to enjoy)
Hellsing Ultimate (Didnt like that Alucard had no good rivals until ep. 8)

Tenjou Tenge -
Souchirou Nagi and Bob Makihara are two delinquents who arrive at Toudou Academy with the objective of ruling over the school with their strength. But on their first day, they encountered the Jyuukenbu, a martial arts group of the school. Members of the group, Maya Natsume, her sister Aya, and Masataka Takayanagi easily overpowered Souchirou and Bob. And what's more, due to what was assumed to be their "connections" with the Jyuukenbu, the two were attacked by members of the Enforcement Group, which oversees the martial arts groups of the school. Drawn into the personal conflicts between the Jyuukenbu and the Enforcement Group, Souchirou and Bob have no choice but to join up with Maya Natsume's group and to hone their skills to become even stronger.

R - 17+ (violence & profanity)

Pretty much all i can think of right now, not a bad anime it's pretty good.

Read the manga for freezing. I agree the anime was terrible but I loved the manga.
