Like it, hate it or one-sided? If so, why?

You can see what my favorite is. :)

might wanna make a poll outta this :)

um, yea I'm a straight guy, so obviously I stay away from yaoi. I'm not even that crazy about yuri, although I don't mind it as much I guess but yuri would more like me keep me away from an anime rather than draw me towards it (probably is what's keeping me away from Simoun and Kannazuki no Miko). I have nothing against gay ppl but watching it isn't something that appeals to me is all.

i view both yaoi and yuri as the same as hentai with the only difference being the participants being the same sex. While this might not be true, its just how I see it. So anime like Simoun and Strawberry Panic i dont see as yuri but shoujo ai instead. And i'm fine with shoujo/shounen ai but yuri/yaoi is something i'm just not fond of. Though i prefer shoujo ai over shounen ai

I'm impartial to both. I would not watch an anime just because it has yaoi/yuri. Also, I probably would not watch anything that has a "heavy" yaoi/yuri content just because it doesn't really appeal to me.

EDIT: So basically what faust just said =P

Personally, I'm a straight guy, so yaoi really isn't my thing, though I'll tolerate it. I really don't mind yuri, as seeing two girls kissing each other isn't as bad on the eyes for me. ^_^

Again, its just a matter of perspective really. You can really get into sensitive issues with this topic. Basically, its all comes down to your level of comfortability with these issues at hand.

i don't like yaoi or yuri...i'm okay with it as long as it doesn't get too hardcore...i consider myself pretty open minded, so a lot of things don't bother me that much...like seeing two girls kiss or two guys kiss is no big deal to me...then again, that's more shoujo-ai or shounen-ai so i dunno...i guess it depends on your definition of yaoi/yuri...

I'd never watch yaoi, unless I somehow stumble across it by accident. But I still have nothing against homosexuals because of that.
I am a man, and straight. So I seek for the opposite gender. So Yuri is inviting, but lately it've been rather boring, I think I watched that stuff for a too long peroid to still enjoy it.

Pretty much like the_pillows. I honestly don't care. All I want is a good story. If certain shounen-ai or shoujo-ai manage to still have a good story even if the main pairing is of the same sex, that that is fine with me. Yaoi or yuri (or hentai) that is just smut isn't worth watching for me. So the main point is, gender of couples are irrelevant, as long as there is still a story. :P

As for hentai, yuri can be fun, yaoi does not suit my tastes ._.
However if there is some yaoi romance in a story (Like a sidestory for a couple of the characters), that alone won't make me drop it...
But if there is a lot of focus on Yaoi romance throughout the whole thing I wouldn't be able to stand it...

...I think we need more thorough definitions here....

Shounen-ai: Two male characters have a relationship, are in love, etc. There is no sex (or if there is, it isn't visually depicted at all), although there may be kissing.

Shoujo-ai: same as shounen-ai, but with girls.

BL (boy love): Halfway between shounen-ai and yaoi; there is more storyline, and it may show the character being sexual or having sex, but you can't see anything (there is no depiction of genitalia).

Yaoi: Like hentai/ecchi, with two guys.

Yuri: Like hentai/ecchi, with two girls.

Futanari: Like hentai/ecchi, but with two (or more) girls. One or more of the girls has a penis (not a strap-on).

not really into the 2-D porn but if theres a single Gay or Lesbian (maybe even a couple) in a comedy I wouldn't really mind in fact I think that has the potential to be really funny disturbing all the straight people.

I really don't like yaoi. Typical straight guy response, I suppose. I don't mind a little shounen-ai here and there, but I don't want it to be the focus of a show or even all that large a part. Nothing against it, really... it just doesn't appeal to me. Yuri, on the other hand, is great stuff.

Yaoi isn't something I can really enjoy. Dude/dude is just boring or annoying to me o.O I think I may be the first girl to say that in this thread. Such is the path I tread I suppose ^.^;;

Hmmm. Well I guess I would say I don't normally seek out either, at least not on a regular basis, but I've probably read and seen my fair share of yaoi and shounen-ai, especially since most of my anime loving friends are really into it. I definitely like shounen-ai more than yaoi, but that doesn't mean I won't watch/read yaoi. I've never seen or read anything that's yuri, but I have found a couple of shoujo-ai series that held my interests. It's just not my tastes, though, generally speaking.

you know, i actually think it's possible to become desensitized to yaoi/yuri...i can't really explain it, but before, i thought shounen-ai/shoujo-ai or yaoi/yuri in general was really weird (like it seemed too messed up or out of place) but now, it's no big deal to me (i actually thought the twincest thing in ouran was funny and i find the girl x girl and guy x guy relatonships in card captor sakura cute even)...

so, in conclusion, i think newcomers to anime might disapprove of one or the other or even both, but after time, some people can get used to it and it doesn't feel strange anymore...then again, i have seen boys in skirts on irc so many times that nothing seems to affect me that much anymore...lmao...

That is true. Also they see gay attitude/relationships where we can't because we are too used to it.

My other half never never watched anime before Death Note (it took me ages to make him give it a try) and after a few chapters he was convinced it was Shounen-ai. It took me a while to explain that it wasn't! he couldn't understand why no one else saw the "blatant homosexual platonic romance" ROFL
After chapter 26 he just pointed at the screen and said: I told you! XD
It took him one chapter and a half of Tsubasa to ask me if the blond one got it on with the ninja, and he thinks Naruto has an obvious crash on Sasuke as well... I think the only series where he didn't see anything suspicious were Ergo proxy, Gatchaman and Nana...
anyway
yaoi ftw! i haven't watched yuri so i don't know, but shoujo ai is fine with me, all depends on the series!(Utena was great, Strawberry panic was so dull)

Man, I need to get on IRC more often X)!

Hmm...I think I agree. After a while, it's doesn't become "as strange" to people (I wouldn't know; I've known I was bi since I was 13, so it's never been strange to me). I think that people get just used to it, because in Japan it is no big deal =)

HAHA...I always thought of Death Note as a "yaoi waiting to happen" X)! Although Nana had some very shojo-ai moments, I'm surprised he didn't pick up on that.

I dunno. I think sometimes people see gay relationships where there aren't (mostly rabid fangirls :B) and I try not to assume unless it's just so obvious XD

lol that's really weird. i'd think anime-newbies would be less likely to find yaoi in an anime. I for one didn't see any in those anime mentioned above (except for Death Note on episode 26 >_<). All the references to yaoi I hear beforehand just typically come from FYGs.

Now I know from experience that's not true. ^_^: When I was first introducing my best friend to anime, she caught onto potential couplings REALLY quick, even before she got interested in yaoi. And my roommate, who isn't even all that into it, makes jokes about pairings all the time.

LOL at the boyfriend finding yaoi, though. >D I need me a boy like that...

I know a lot of people understand I like yaoi and shounen-ai; however, with yuri it's only to an extent. While I've watched little yuri titles, I can't say I don't like it, it's more along the lines... What is the plot like? Then again, I won't watch either if there's nothing to appeal to me. Well i missed this whole conversation. && with something i like best. So i`m a shounen ai/ yaoi fangirl. I prefer shounen ai however. Yaoi can get pretty intense/disturbing and after you watch so many it kinda starts repeating itself & that is why it comes second. As for shouta, i can handle it to an extent. Little boys climbing all on top of each other is NOT my cup of tea.

But when it comes to Shoujo ai/ yuri, i won`t go near that stuff. It disturbs my inner being. The only time i see hints of Shoujo ai was in LOVELESS & i averted my eyes. Nothing, and i mean NOTHING will make me watch yuri. Not even a good plot & nice art.

Yaoi and yuri don't impress/interest me, except maybe for yaoi fanart (nothing too explicit). This is a good example:

I don't mind yaoi/yuri hentai but I wouldn't watch an anime series about that type of relationship (unless the plot was really good).
