I didnt have the intention of learning japanese when i started watching anime but after watching it iv grown to absolutely love the language . So iv started trying to learn it from books and tapes, and well watching anime more often and i think the anime has helped ALOT. I find the sentence structure is the hardest part about speaking it and i havnt even attempted the writing of it yet. Im shure there are others who are doing this as well but i was just wondering how common this is.

Me to, but I planned to study it seriously because I want to go living in Japan

Picked up alot of phrases and words so far.

Not sure I can get round the sentence structure.

Went through the phase of looking into private tutoring a while back, just a lack of money prevented that.

I've often wondered if you could learn japanese from watching anime, but as for me no.
I have taken thought to learning it someday I love the way the language sounds and would be so cool to watch raw episodes :D

Yeah. xD It's not all that different from Mandarin [ my native language ] in certain aspects so I've caught on to some phrases, and when I watch raw videos I can understand about 75% of it from context clues and knowing words/phrases. xD

I'm learning Japanese at school and there's a good number of words I've learnt from anime. But my school focuses on teaching us formal Japanese so half the stuff I learn in anime I can't use in class.

You can't really learn Japanese from watching anime, you may pick up a few words that will be easier to remember as a result but don't dare try and speak the same way as an anime character does haha. As someone said earlier it is not representative of how actual Japanese people would communicate. It did spark my interest in the language though and I started taking extra curricular Japanese classes at University as a result. :)

Not really, I'm learning Japanese through study. :v

I am picking up casual slang and insults, though. Not the best thing to pepper into daily conversation, huh?

In the past 5 months, I have learned quite a lot of Japanese from anime, at least enough to make a rough TL of a raw for myself (still with some guesswork though), as long as it's not a very complicated show. I'm still not good enough to actually have a long conversation though. But that's just me, I do learn languages easier this way, I also learned English via video games and movies.

There are some good points of learning from anime, as you learn more about different forms of speech than from learning via Japanese lessons, which most of the time will only cover the formal speech (at least all that I know of).

Yes! I learned many words and basic grammar only through watching anime. I have also done a 2 week long intensive course at our university for getting better knowlegde of the grammar. Because I don´t actually speak I am still slow, but I do understand quite a lot by now and can do simple conversations. I think I am at least able to stay alive in japan without major problems. I learned kana and know about 60 kanji and some more which I can´t write but understand. I really love the language and hope to improve more in the future. I am watching anime for only 8 months so of course I can´t say I am good, but I understand how the language works and I think I have some talent for it.

I've been watching anime seriously for only about two years, and I didn't really bother to 'learn' while being entertained (Hell, I even hate school, so educational fun is pretty much oxymoron to me), so the most of which I only have a grasp upon are basic Japanese terminology as well, such as Boke, Tsundere, Yamete (stop), Hayaku (hurry up), etc. Though I know I pretty much spelled the romanji wrong for the latter two.

This is one of the BIGGEST MYTHS out there.

That anime isn't representative of how real people talk.

One of the biggest myths.

In any field of medium, 70-90% of the language used is pretty much the same. With the rest 10-30% being specialized vernacular or "slang".

Like a science textbook, if you have ever read a science textbook. Maybe 30% of the scientific vocab you won't use in a real conversation. However, the sentences, the structure, the rest of the 70% of language used is just common English that you use every single day.

The same is with comic books, you look at a Batman comic, with the exception of 10% of the vernacular, the rest of the 90% is how you would talk in real Life.

A huge misconception is people saying like how Naruto is cliche, shallow, and doesn't use real Japanese.

In fact, Naruto, out of all the anime I've seen, uses some of the most complex speech I've heard. They not only use advanced vocab, but they incorporate a lot of Bhuddist/sacrilegious scripts, dialogue, and a lot of military vocabulary that are just, in my opinion, very, VERY useful in learning Japanese.

All the だってばよ!and all that nonsense really only makes up 10% of the entire dialogue of the show.

And plus, you can just take whatever Naruto's saying, change the だってばよ! to です、and well....there you go....it becomes normal Japanese.

Well I do agree with pretty much everything you said actually. It's kind of obvious that they are going to use common everyday Japanese in the shows but to a English viewer of anime recognising the slang and specialised vocabulary may not be obvious. You mention だってばよ!which is very often used at the end of Naruto's sentences but to an average watched with no/little knowledge of Japanese may interpret in some way and think it is normal. Also, will an average watcher even know です means lol ? I did say you would learn a good few words watching anime, but relying solely on anime to learn will only develop bad habits. I'm not saying anime is detrimental to your learning lol.

For the record, I also do not think Naruto is cliche, shallow or uses fake Japanese (is that even possible? lol).

Yeah, well...I 'm talking about people learning Japanese....a lot of people who learn Japanese also holds this misconception.

But yeah....people who knows no Japanese would probably have no idea.

But people have to realize that

Anime have to use normal language for Japanese people to understand. I mean, they can't use weird, non-structural grammar, or any of that stuff. The show won't ever air if that was the case.

Not really, it is very easy to pick up the basic conversational skills. The sentence structure is quite simple once you get used to it. Hard parts come in when you want to learn to read and write. Learning the 2 phonetic alphabets, Hiragana and Katakana, is quite simple and straightforward. Learning the 2000+ Kanji will take you years haha. I haven't even started touching Kanji yet.

I also find it a much more interesting language than say Spanish or French (although they are probably more useful, I guess I get sick of that masculine and feminine crap lol). If you want to learn, go for it but try get classes. :)

Sup, MAL
I have been watching anime irregularly for about 4 years. (What i saw on TV as a kid does not count)
After 1st year, apart from picking up some simple japanese words, I started studying Japanese by myself, with the help of some teach-yourself textbook. I did not have much time for it, but I understood the basics of grammar - and from then on, I think, it is even possible to learn everyday-speaking language just by watching anime.
As for writing - katakana and hiragana are not that hard to remember; learning 1945 basic kanji is a different story) That, I belive, I will do eventually, in years to come...

Having recently become a Haruhi fan, I am now looking forward to reading the light novel (ラノベ) in Japanese - what a great stimulus for studying kanji that will be!

You can't learn the language just from watching anime but if you're taking Japanese lessons then it definitely helps to watch IN ADDITION to actually taking lessons mostly because you can hear conversations and reinforce what you're learning.

Hm, I took Japanese lesson after getting hooked onto anime and falling for the language, so I have the basics hira and kana down. Now I sort of grasp new vocabs and kanjis as I go along. Having proper Japanese lessons really helps for anyone who wants to be fluent in the language one day. I know I do (:

After watching so much anime, I've learnt quite a few words, like one or two word phrases, and would one day love to fully learn the language as I love japanese culture.

I think it should be easy that Mandarin is my second language so I can understand kanji fairy easy lol, except they're all in traditional and I can't read trad, and I can't pronounce the kanji in Japanese. I can in chinese though hah.

Btw Japanese kanji IS pretty much Chinese lol, all the characters that have more than 3 strokes and look fairy complicated compared to hiragana and katakana
