Why are movies filmed in so many different locations?

Out of the blue I see the movie "Sleepless In Seattle" on the movie channel encore, and I got a random interest of where it was filmed, and IMDb listed places in 3 different states which does include Seattle, but WHY? Why would you have to go across the country to film a few scenes?

The only thing I could really think of was certain kind of background they would want, but still if a movie is suppose to take place in a certain spot like Seattle then why not film it ALL in Seattle?

Just a random interest that came out of no where and I was just wondering if anyone had an answer or what other people thought about it.

Thanks in advance for those who took the time to give any answer or opinion.

style of shot, certain location or place you want in the movie, some states offer tax breaks or investment incentives for filming there..alot of reasons go into filming.
Something cool to be placed here in the near future.

Because it makes the movie seem a little more realistic if you go all over the place. Especially if the scene changes to a different state, I don't think it would look so great if you were to keep filling in the same town.

Yea but movies sometimes take place in a certain town and/or city, and takes place in that town/city the ENTIRE movie, not all but a lot do. Wouldn't want to be REALISTIC and keep it in that town. I don't know it just seems stupid, cause I'm from Seattle and I can tell when they are not in Seattle, not all the time but sometimes it's obvious and in my opinion that LOWERS the quality of the movie.

But thank you for your posts I do appreciate it.

Actually has to do with money and how long they can film there, Mostly likely they jumped around because it was probably cheaper to move to another city then stay in the same one. Certain cities offer lower taxes or charge less for use of the city depending on the time of the year and how many days.

Like a lot of shit is shot in Canada because it's cheap as fuck to shoot there.
It doesn't think, it doesn't feel, it doesn't laugh or cry..... All it does from dusk till dawn is make the soldiers die.

Realism, budget, staying true to the material. I mean you're gonna do an coral reef shot under a swimming pool with props?

To be honest though. It's mostly base on budget. Sometimes it's cheaper to shoot somewhere else. And the hassle that production companies go through just to get a portion of the city blocked.

That's why they always shoot NYC scenes in Toronto. Like the Incredible Hulk.

When they needed a close up on a landmark, then they spend the money to block that store/establishment off.

The studios are only used when there's a green screen needed, CGI work needed, small TV shows. and those over the top scenarios like the tilting hallway in Inception.

Because they want the right location for certain scenes to be set in.

Well a lot of the times, if they are filming a movie and they want a certain area, say the forest, they will go to a state with a better forestry area.

For example, usually when they are filming in the US they will film forest scenes in Oregon.

the reason is cost

Like I live in Vancouver, Canada and a lot of shit is shot up here, especially TV shows (especially science fiction ones).

Maybe the reason is to increase the tourist attraction in that certain area. That is also the few reason why they get several more sponsor from each place.

I've noticed the same thing with science fiction shows, every SyFy original I've watched was filmed up there. But you can't deny Vancouver's perfect scenery. Living in Seattle I often go up to BC, even thinking about moving there if weed isn't legal here by the next 5 years.

But thanks for everyone's time and posts, it did help satisfy my random interest in this subject.

I think it'd be super lame if you're watching a movie and the whole place is nearly the same in each scene..
That's only an opinion x3

Different Locations have different vibes, Lighting, and sometimes its just required by the script, and director.

BECAUSE MAKES MOVIES MORE FUN (FOR THE VIEWERS) IF THEY'RE IN DIFFERENT LOCATIONS.

Sometimes the plot warrants it, and the budget allows it, so they really shoot on location. When they say it's Paris, it really is for example, not just some big studio somewhere.
