I'm flipping through my younger brother's literacy textbook (he's in elementary, this is a 2008 textbook) and there is a section about manga. There's a brief definition page (you know, stuff like: mangaka, anime, gekiga, shojo, shonen) and a 5-page biography page about Svetlana Chimakova ( who wrote DramaCon. Then they have all these questions like:

-Why do you think manga is such an appealing medium?
-Whaf makes manga/anime different from other mediums?

So on...

How do you feel about schools teaching anime/manga in class. I was quite surprised actually.

Well, that is fairly common for an english class. Not so much manga as over mediums though.

Im going to assume you dont live in Ireland. If Irish children were confronted with those questions/terms, their most likely reaction would be to tell you to piss off, or look at you as if you had a thousand heads.

Then they would go to the local pub and watch English premiership and drink Guinness all night, right?

Finally. The correct idea of manga is being taught. Not every manga-ka has to be Japanese. Instead, it's someone capable of drawing manga.

It's interesting to know that. Now if only that was implemented worldwide...

People are pretty skeptical about manga though. So this is a pretty surprising thing. I didn't have this when I was in elementary school

I live in Alberta so that's probably why. The education system here isn't what you would call stellar.

I don't think it should be on the literacy book.

Art book, maybe.

At least here we learn comics as art and not litterature and only refer them in "language" classes as a brief example of written media.

I find the idea not good because pictures are a distraction, not something to learn from. Maybe in art class, but not in an English class.

But if it all goes well, hurray for you.

I don't know about high school and the lower years but a friend of mine is majoring in writing at my University and they spent three weeks specifically on manga with guest speakers. Apparently this section of the unit was only implemented last year so its fairly recent. I live in Australia and I have to say I was surprised.

Probably because its Japanese and they want to broaden their horizons in terms of cultured literature. Also because anything that has words is good as far as schools are concerned because it gets students reading.

I have learned english through reading manga, and watching anime.
The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name. The nameless is the beginning of heaven and Earth. The named is the mother of the ten thousand things.
I do not recall, Jesus ever saying "build churches, temples, and kill those who doesn't follow christianity..." nor he said "christianity is religion".
