Overview

Protagonists are arguably the most divisive type of character in fiction. They’re the characters that narrate their stories and have the most screen time of any character, and that is to be truly expected. However, you have to make sure that not only do you have to keep your character writing and direction healthy, but also ensure that they are classified as ‘protagonists’. In this list, I felt like sharing my top 5 favorite and least favorite protagonists in anime and manga. Even though some of my points may sound judgmental (and they might be), all of what I say here is 100% based on my opinions and observations. Also, I will be marking spoilers for each character, so keep that in mind. Now then, you got a heads up? You got a heads up, indeed. Let’s get this over with.

No.5 Loved - Sakata Gintoki

From: Gintama

No.5 Hated - Amano Yukiteru

From: The Future Diary

No.4 Loved - Koito Yuu

From: Bloom Into You

No.4 Hated - Ayanokoji Kiyotaka

From: Classroom of the Elite

No.3 Loved - Satou Kazuma

From: Konosuba

No.3 Hated - Kinoshita Kazuya

From: Rent-a-Girlfriend

No.2 Loved - Ryougi Shiki

From: Kara no Kyoukai

No.2 Hated - Hoshino Aquamarine

From: Oshi no Ko

No.1 Loved - Hoshimiya Ichigo

From: Aikatsu

No.1 Hated - Kousaka Kirino

From: Oreimo

Conclusion

And that does it. A list consisting of my most loved and hated characters in the industry. If you disagree with my picks and/or you want to share your very own picks, feel free to comment. I will completely ignore rude/elitist comments. Now, some of my picks may change over time, minor or major, depending on how my view would shift from here and there. Also, kind of on an unrelated note, I was about to do a villains list with this same premise, but I somehow got impatient, and my analysis on each wouldn’t be completed. Each of my picks is hardly complete as well, but I felt more comfortable sharing them anyway. With that out of the way, thanks for reading, and that’s all I have.

Ciao

My favorites were Uzumaki Naruto, Itadori Yuji, Ken Kaneki, Denji, they are kinda like Peter Parker from Spiderman (which is my favorite protag of all time) because they suffered a lot yet still remained kind. Also Eren and Musashi from AOT and Vagabond because the writing is freaking good!

Least favorites would be Light Yagami, i hate this guy lol

@TheFlyingSoda As a rule of thumb any male character in a harem or ecchi in an otherwise all girl show is my least favorite it kinda ruins the all female vibe

@Ymir_The_Viking Light is definitely a character written to be hated, with how he's motivated and how vile he can get. But personally, I hate characters that are both one-dimensional and offend the hell out of me, so I myself wouldn't put Light into the hated list. But you do you.

@PraneshChow I'm not sure about the rest of the list, but I do really like Thorfinn.

@tchitchouan Ah, Issei. I don't hate him myself, but he's not really a compelling character, and he can be pretty cringe at times.

He's just an example i gave because he's well known, keep in my mind i hate any and all prominent males in ecchi, i much prefer an all girl show than one with a single male.

Favorite Top 6. - Not in order, I made this one on the spot, so stuff can change if I think about it longer, because I'm not the type of person to do lists like that.

Gintoki Sakata [Gintama]
Chise Hatori [Mahoutsukai no Yome]
Kei Nagai [Ajin - manga]
Yabuki Joe [Ashita no Joe]
Denji [Chainsaw Man]
Mutta Nanba [Uchuu Kyoudai]

I don't have a least favorite list, I rarely feel any strong emotions of dislike towards characters in general so making such a list would be pointless for me.

Glad to see Simon in the list. I can't believe some would write him off as a generic hero. That's technically true, but only on the surface. Simon arguably is one of the most well-written and inspiring characters ever, with how he overcomes his fears and obstacles, as well as carrying Kamina's legacy. I'd say a similar note with Kill la Kill's Ryuko. What did Mob do to you, though? I'm kind of curious.

Most loved protagonist Mizunashi akari from aria the animation

In her eyes, small, seemingly insignificant things can make her happy, all her words and actions make others happy. She also known as " happiness expert "

Enjoy every moment seems easy but in practice it's actually pretty hard.
Example at real life, When I talking , i have a bad habit of forcing what I like without considering others.

Other character that I love
- kiriyama rei
Despite what happens to him at past , he focused to be the best at the shogi ( the only thing that he can do ).

And when he meet someone important later , he always there for that person.

- Emiya shiro
His dream may have been inspired by someone else, but no matter what happened, he didn't abandon it.

It cost his life , his beloved one , and his own happiness. He doubt it once but never leave his dream.

Normally, the protagonist isn't my favourite character for various reasons. But I make an exception for her:

Kanon Shibuya is near perfect. She's like the archetypical fantasy loving nerd girl who gets swept up in this crazy adventure, except in a semi-realistic setting. She seems like a typical shy shoujo protagonist until her actions show she's actually way more capable than she says she is, and her big climactic moment is finally realizing that. She isn't some hyperactive ditz as per the YA anime norm, but is actually smart and perceptive. She's one of the most humble and sincere characters ever. And she's one of the few protagonists to genuinely surprise me and make me re-evaluate my life. Oh, and of course, she's a singer-songwriter. I'm one too.

Runners-up:

2. Nausicaa. Mostly her manga incarnation; her anime incarnation, though still cool, feels more sanitized in comparison.
3. Ran Kotobuki (Super GALS). I should hate her because she's vain and materialistic, but the Gals series mocks her enough times for that to be okay, and despite that, she's loud and outspoken. That's a huge blessing by anime girl standards.
4. Yusei Fudo (Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds). He's hot, and an ideal caring husbando.
5. Edward Falcon from Power Stone. He turns out to be a really nice person when it matters despite being a hothead teenager, and is pretty open and realistic about his emotions especially regarding a certain (albeit predictable) reveal about the villain.

Disliked protagonists:

1. Any harem lead. All these boring ass dudes who a bunch of girls inexplicably fall for are so interchangeable.
2. Hodaka Morishima (Weathering With You). Dooms Tokyo over some girl and acts like an ungrateful brat to those who supported him just because they opposed him going after some girl.
3. Madoka Kaname. Overhyped for someone who's like Charlie Bucket of Chocolate Factory fame and wins by doing nothing.
4. Yuya Sakaki (Yu-Gi-Oh Arc-V). Simple-minded idiot who obsesses over smiles regardless of the situation around him, and sucks away gravity from his far more interesting supporting cast.
5. Naruto. Wasn't so bad at first, but Shippuden ruined his character by making him constantly cry for Sasuke like an abused boyfriend and giving him Mary Sue powers to magically cure people of cynicism without any real plan to solve the world's problems. Shippuden Naruto is one of the poster boys for battle shonen's bad reputation.

I haven't watched Naruto in its entirety, and not a fan of naruto but I disagree with this.

Naruto not smart since he was little.
he is stupid that why he focuses on one thing and doesn't give up.

He believes that if he can't save his friends, he won't be Hokage.
In his mind, he only thinks about saving Sasuke = Hokage.

That's also why he hasn't found the answer to the world. He never thought about it because it's not even his job as a genin ninja XD
this is Naruto bro not lelouch.

But he won the debate against Pain.
Pain believes that all humans must experience suffering. Meanwhile, Naruto believes that humans must overcome suffering.

I love TTGL so much and I do believe Simon's and TTGL's writing are both underrated. The show is pretty simple but it is executed to its utmost. And about Mob, he is a fine kid, it is just that I believe him to be the most boring protagonist ever. I hate Mob Psycho as a whole for various reasons (and my most hated character ever is by far Reigen, but he is not the MC of course) but Mob just bores me to my core.

@Frans001 I can't speak for the latter, but I do really love Akari and Rei for how much they taught me about personal lives overall. I still can't get over how Aria is labeled as a Shounen when, to me, it's more of a Shoujo. That wouldn't matter much, though.

@MelodyOfMemory Just searched up her name. While I'm still not a fan of Love Live, I do kinda like her. She and Yu carried the series for me. Also, FINALLY, Madoka in the hated list. I wouldn't really put her in my top 10 most hated, but Madoka herself is written idiotically. Madoka Magica as a whole is a series that gets worse for me over time.

@DarkFirefly72 Some say that the show's biggest nail in the coffin is either Kamina's death or the last 5 minutes in the final episode, and I do not agree with either of those. There are very strong connections and foreshadowing involved, and believe it or not, they're easy to spot. I wouldn't call Simon's writing underrated, especially with how much attention TTGL has gained over the years, but it's still definitely something that should be ignored even one bit. I wouldn't agree a lot with your Mob Psycho points, but I wouldn't speak much of them. In fairness, I felt like either reading the manga or re-watching the show. Season 3 was a little disappointing, though.

@TheFlyingSoda As a shounen, I like Aria :)
I think it's on par with Natsume/3 Gatsu no Lion. So I think it can be both shounen and shoujo.

But I agree there are some sentimental scenes that feel very shoujo especially in season 3 (origination).
Or maybe I'm just weird XD I'd rather watch the sentimental parts of Aria than Blue Lock/Demon Slayer, which are popular shounen shows.

@TheFlyingSoda As a shounen, I like Aria :)

@Frans001 For sure. You're not weird for that. I'm not a fan of those shows either.

@MichaelJackson Another Joe appreciation, nice. Haruko is interesting, though. While I'm not a fan of her, I don't think she's that horrible.

Sayaka Saeki, in her novels, is more worthy of being on this list personally. As much as I love Yuu for her overall characterization and development, and deeply relate to her, Sayaka is just on another level for me. More context found here, here, and here (spoilers, though).

@Venucurius I've been meaning to re-read the Sayaka novels ngl. I love her character and her own series, and I think LNs are some of the most re-readable things ever.
