NGL, I don't dislike it, and this episode seems to mainly be setting up for the season.
But God the pacing is bad.
I felt like it was throwing word vomit and images at me way too fast.
there was no lingering on anything, and the fact that there's no episode count, makes me both hopeful and pessimistic about where the anime is going to end in the manga.
Hopeful in that if they give us 24 episodes, this might have just been an episode just to get us back up to pace, and it might slow down a bit.
Pessimistic because the intro hints at where they want to get to, and the pace seems to indicate they want to try to do it in around 12 episodes, which just isn't enough.

TLDR: there's a chance it can be great, but the pacing doesn't give me good vibes.

The humor is still on point, the animation is mid but that is true for most of the shows out this season.

If you folks can do a better job animating go for it!
Just glad Saitama and company are back.

“Other things are mid so this gets a pass”

Super interesting logic, friend.
@Souschefcam If you don't like the show its ok to bitch about it but for me 80% of the animation is mid.
It gets a pass from me because its funny! Just for fun what's you best animated anime of this season?

@Sexyjutsu This makes no sense. You don't make your opening episode shit on purpose. If anything, your first and final episodes should be the best one in terms of quality.

However, what I meant by "animation" in my awkward way is not animation per se, which seems much worse than that of season 1 and 2, but rather all the production as the whole. The direction, if such a term can be used for animation, a sound design, and the whole feel of it. The art is visibly different, and seems cheaper. The movements seem wooden and unnatural. I wasn't immersed at all in the episode.

Many people here talked about how bad the second season animation was. I'm not an anime specialist, but I didn't noticed much difference then. And my enjoyment from the season 2 wasn't lessened in any way. But this first episode has actually made me angry. I don't know what is it: is it really so bad, or maybe the fashion of animation has changed, or maybe is the overall decline of the quality in Japanese animation -- all I know it looks, sounds and feels terrible in comparison for previous seasons. And it's a shame, because we are talking about one of the best action manga there are. At least for me it is probably the top one.
@Sanitizer_trio It's not about making it shit, people signed off on it obviously and it makes perfect sense if they don't see this episode as worthy of any significant time. I'm fine with this one being a slideshow as long as its good where it counts.

amen my guy. haven’t picked the manga back up in a while. some of the early/mid art was crazyyyy insane too

i love the fact so many people say this looks better than s2.

s2 was a downgrade from s1 but was decent, kinda low budget but serviceable. this.....this is not even close. i think i have never seen something so blatantly bad in my life in terms of animation....blue lock s2 and shumatsu are the only 2 shows that come to my mind that are mostly the same in quality.

the worst part is not only that there is no animation or the few moments that there is looks so bad and unnatural....it is the direction itself. it looked like a slideshow of the panels from the manga, no transitions, nothing, and this clearly doesnt work for an anime. When you read a manga, you got some time to make things out in your mind, you can look at past panels, etc so it works fine even if panels are not fluid and show abruptly different things. In this episode, there were moments of 4 or 5 short scenes with different drawings going too fast, it was a complete mess and it looked so inconsistent.

And what is even worse...it looks like an adaption from the manga panels, BUT IT ISNT, they just took out some parts from the manga, making it feel even more rushed.

I cannot take seriously anyone saying this looks better than S2. NO WAY

Christ... That was so fucking disappointing.

There weren't any fight scenes in this episode and they couldn't bother to draw backgrounds for many of the shots? Like even if Murata himself didn't draw a background for a particular close up of a character talking why not take some liberty and do it yourself? Like, I can see they put effort into character art, but whatever impact the detail on that should have is diminished by the fact that the characters are often just standing in front of single color or often white backgrounds, or speed line backgrounds. It get tiresome when you see the same stuff over and over.

Animation aside, the biggest issue for me were the transitions from scene to scene. And I don't know if I'm necessarily going to put the blame on the studio because its been years since I read the early part of this arc. So much jumping around abruptly. They go from Child Emperor talking to Metal Knight, then go to the infiltration group getting their battle suits, follow that up with a scene of Zombie Man in an alley somewhere, and then cut to Fubuki at Saitama's apartment? Like, I know the manga has a a lot of heroes and jumps around a lot, but that just felt awkward to experience in a span of three minutes, lol.

@GabiiNova what is this copium, even if jc gave us good animation for the action scenes (which let's be real, they probably won't) it still doesn't make up for the fact that every other scene is a powerpoint presentation lmao

There's no copium, I'm telling you the facts. And go animate One Punch Man yourself then if you're going to be that critical. Are saying you would've liked more minor movement when they are talking? this was a dialogue heavy episode setting up the next.

@ultramb That's a massive insult to the manga, the manga is at least a few thousand times better.

(the web comic is better too)

(I guess Saitama's character is still assassinated, nice. Worst part of "s2", and s2 was extremely badly done in so many ways. But that was the most unbearable part. Seeing Saitama gutted completely.)
@ZaratanCho true, that's one of the reasons i held back from reading the manga until season 3 comes out. if i read that my expectations would be far too high to the point i won't even give a 4 star rating to this. lol

Well there's either a massive amount of copium or a severe lack of observation

If you seriously believe that there needs to be action for characters and objects to be animated I don't know what to tell you other than just laugh. Most series that have decent animation also has character movement in dialogue scenes. Go watch literally any good drama or non-action scenes from well animated action series even for that matter if you really can't tell. Idle movement, clothing and hair animation, walking animations are all a thing. In this episode we mostly get still frames with a panning camera. The first episode of OPM3 isn't just poorly animated, it barely has any animation at all and skips as many shots as possible to not have to animate characters moving from point A to point B.

Also, come on "animate it yourself" kinda cringe response, idk if you expect me to reply to that seriously or if just emotional outburst. JC accepted this series. They severely underdeliver, not just from what's expected by fans but from what is standard for a high profile action series.

Well, as many have already said the "animation" was awful. Still frames with just the mouth moving was half the episode, reminded me of old kids' shows with the fruits with human mouths super-imposed over them. I didn't even mind season 2 like so many others did, I knew it wouldn't be on the same level as season 1 and I still loved season 2. This episode however was so bad I couldn't look past it. The story was fine, always love hangout scenes at Saitama's apartment. Hopefully they just saved the 95% of this episode's budget that went unused and applied it to the rest of the season because I don't know if even I can defend a full season of that garbage and I'm usually very tolerant and optimistic, especially about my favorite anime: OPM.

They are still talking about Garou,
Damn it, I've had enough

I don't care if he has childhood trauma or not,
I don't care about his growth or attitude change either

I just think any plot about Garou is boring,
The content of Garou should be END by the Season 2, and the Garou plot can only be paired with 4-6 episodes, no more!
@gi2 Hate to break it to you, but you might as well jump off the show now. Garou is a core character from now on.

17:25 Lol I knew they were gonna get clapped so easily.
So the organization is out here once again letting their own suits be used and then beating them. 18:50 Quite confident for someone who almost got eaten last time. Lol so I knew it was made by them but 19:00 funny how they just popped out and now look the exact same as the original suits.
So far not much happened but that's somewhat expected from a first episode. Hope it picks up though.

The art is good. The OP is still nice. But what is this almost non-existing animation? Wasn't there an inofficial "first episode of a new season should look phenomenal" rule? It feels like they started at negative budget or sth... wtf

They have heard the feedback from season 2. The episode does lack action and significant movement.

There was some incoherence in some scene transitions, which I can find in several parts of the episode. This did not detract from the overall experience even though it seemed strange.

The episode should have been longer, especially since it was the first episode in 6 years if you ignore the recap episode.

wow, it’s bad.
the editing is super messy, the scene transitions feel weird and there's a lot of expositon dump.
can't say im a fan of the animation, some parts look off tho i did like the dark outlines on the characters and a few shots where they play with colors, those looked pretty cool. i have to say i don’t really hate the animation completely, but after waiting over 6+ years for a new season, i think calling this a disappointment is putting it lightly. the sound design is really bad too.

then there’s saitama… for a 24min episode, he barely got 4 mins of screen time. i honestly felt like he was an afterthought. the jokes didn’t really land either, except for when saitama's deadpan face is on the screen, and there simply wasn't enough of it.
