I want to know if I can watch this without watching Gintama at all? I was hoping that if I liked this, I would start the main series since it's so long. I don't have the time dedication for that rn.

i wouldn't think so, it isn't even written by sorachi. liking the main show, it's characters and 3-nen z-gumi scenes in that is what makes this spinoff worth looking forward to.

i dont think so tbh, part of the reason gintama is funny besides the parody is understanding/getting the gags, quirks, inner jokes from the cast, which im assuming they will use for this entry.

I think the only benefit you’d get from starting here would be seeing if you like the characters enough to watch the main series.

Did you hear me?

That's kinda what I was wondering. I usually can't watch a show if one of the main cast is insufferable.

I wouldn’t recommend it, since they seem pretty… different, but I think it’s fair to watch 1-2 episodes and see if you like the characters at least. Up to you

Over 300 episodes in under a month. It can be done, but this person really has to put in the work.

I think it's best to watch the first series, gintama 2006 is not as long as it appears to since they were using the same formula like what toei piece using by wasting first 5 minutes of the episodes before the actual episode start (like gintama staff liked to say when explaining filler and why they are taking alternative formula in order not to run in to those issues) to make actual episodes 5 minutes shorter in duration. Also it is recommended not to binge watch the series since 95% of it is episodic self contained story, so you should watch at your own pace when you think is right or depending on the mood.

Also it is recommended to be somewhat experienced within classic weekly shonen jump era, somewhat within Japanese culture and it's history, and some legacy/classic series outside wsj such as for example berserk/vinland saga in order to understand meanings within hidden meanings how many of them are in gintama in which they are parodies of a certain series gintama parodies that requires knowledge. Even I have not realized up until recently that some scenes were actually parodies of a certain series after I have been reading more manga/watching more anime post gintama completion in early 2023.

And when you will watch gintama, remember to watch it in a well lit up room and keep safe distance from the tv.

Yeah bro, it’s a mediocre challenge ,totally doable for weebs with passion. I binge-watched 1000 episodes of Detective Conan in a little over 3 weeks (felt like 2 though). It was just that fuckin good, dawg. I literally ate that shit no Diddy.

I won’t recommend it. Also, assuming you’ll watch 300+ episodes is a bit of a stretch. Who knows? You might not even go past first 3 episodes and drop it, then you can save your time.

Looking at the characters that's going to appear in the series, I suggest to watch at least the first 100 episodes of the 1st seasons.

Why there are always people like that? Is that trolling?

It guess it's the equivalent of watching Carnival Phantasm with zero Nasu-verse knowledge.

But they are all insufferable in a way... That's the main point of Gintama - people are insufferable.

Theoretically speaking you can watch it without watching the main anime.
But there are soooo many characters, their behaviours, their backgrounds, their inside jokes, etc etc that might not make sense to you if you just start watching this without watching the main story.
My opinion? Try it…. 3 episodes. If it didnt make sense then you need to watch previous stories.

Broooooo. It took me 3 months to watch 1000 one piece episodes and it was during covid when we had nothing to do.
Respectfully HOW TF could one watch 1000 episodes in 3 weeks?
No toilet break? No shower? No touching grass? No eating?

He probably did it by skipping fillers (so half of the 1000 Episodes), if he's not lying. It's mathematically impossible to watch so many episodes in such a short time, especially as Detective Conan has quite a few double episodes and some 2h specials.

@Alexioos95 One Piece barely has fillers, it instead pads for time with slows down/expands upon scenes from the manga (as well as recapping at the start of every episode). The issue with the anime is pacing, not filler, so you can't exactly skip episodes (but you can skip "last time" recaps).

We were talking about Detective Conan, not One Piece, but sure; Toei are masters at padding their episodes, they were doing the same back in the 80s/90s with Dragon Ball or Saint Seiya.

I'd say its preferable if you watch the series first. BUT! It's gonna take at least 100 episodes to see and get familiar with every character who will be involved in this series, with some being a bit further: Tsukuyo in episode 139, and Sasaki seemingly the furthest one, showing up in episode 244. unless the MAL casting list is missing some characters, that is.

Having watched the 1st episode of Ginpachi just a while ago, it was quite hard to relate to the references they make without those informational pop up 'notes' that fansubs used to have (not sure if those still exists). So, for the most part, it was just the banter between the characters that I got to enjoy, which I was only able to do so because I know the characters' relationships in the OG series. But either way, I'm just happy to have Gintama back in my life again <3

So, if you're feeling it, I'd say give the OG series a watch first for better enjoyment, even just the first 100, to get a good grasp of that Gintama comedy style. If you don't feel like doing that though, there's no harm in trying Ginpachi first-- it's the usual gag, school sitcom that's full of random craziness anyways. But chances are, you're gonna be so lost, not just with the references, but with the inside gags. Either way, hope you enjoy your time with Gintama ^_^

The OG series only really picks up critical mass by the time you get to ep50, then its a wild ride from then on out.
Definitely a marathon rather than a sprint

Watch the original, many episodes are big hits but there also some big misses in between. Just skip the episode if it isn't clicking for you, since it is a gag series, there isn't much of a penalty for skipping.

@Alexioos95 Wow, talk about a Freudian Slip from me then, I could swore I've seen someone say One Piece.
Detective Conan does have a problem with filler AND padding, in that case haha
Then again, they have been remedying that with "remastered re-runs" and recaps for more than a decade now, not that it helped too much tbh

There is really not much padding in Conan tho, even in recent fillers. For the remasters, the vast majority of them are identical in content (simple remastering), but the 3-Episodes cases did got all edited to fit a 1-hour timeslot, and it's clearly for the worse, removing most comedic/romantic interactions between characters, and a lot of lore about the places/themes of the murders. For example, most dialogues about the Mermaid legend is scrapped in the remaster of Episodes 222-224, and that's a huge bummer, as the final scenes of Heiji and Kazuha are meant to draw a parallel. The recaps are merely 1 core cases of the characters with few edited bits of other cases, just so people can watch the new Movies, too.
