Here in the United States there are talks that they want to get rid of the US penny, due to people nowadays preferring to use credit cards over cash. So it got me thinking, how are you in this category? Do you prefer credit cards over cash? A mix of both? Or maybe you're one of those rare individuals that still writes checks. |

I always carry cash with me, but I only pay stuff like groceries, some clothes, some books, mags, hair dressers, other smaller stuff with it, while I nowadays prefer to just use my card for bigger purchases and paying for stuff for which it might be more convenient to have some additional form of attestation of payment. Otherwise, I don't really want to have every little purchase land on my bank statement I also use small coins for paying and have paid the exact sum twice in cash that way today. Btw: I still don't have any credit card and haven't set up my phone for paying, I'm just using a debit card for the most part for digital purchases |

Cash, yes. Change, not really unless I'm going to the car wash. I use cash and debit card about equally out in public. |

I carry like 50 euros at most, which I almost never use, but not having any cash on me makes me feel anxious. You never know when some restaurant waiter or cashier or a taxi driver, or whatever will surprise you with a "cash only" at the end, and now you have a bunch of people staring at you and you feel like a criminal for being unable to pay for whatever it is that you ordered, and then there's this middle-aged couple who'll start ranting about how far technology has went and how it all heralds the imminent downfall of humanity, and everyone is shaking their heads and nodding in agreement as if it's my fault the damn place didn't charge their POS terminal. It's a nightmare! |

I thought they wanted to get rid of the penny because they cost more to make than they're worth? Not because less people carry physical money. That aside, I still use cash. I use it as a way to limit my spending on certain things. Yes, if I run out of what I have, I could go to an ATM or just use a card, defeating the purpose of the limit, but this works for me. |

I do because i think like that it's easier to see how much money is used, like with cards you really don't witness it but giving/using cash it's like idk kinda witnessing it and you're more aware? ;D cus with card you can easily just swipe and that's it |

A mix of both. In fact, I just went to a restaurant that said they preferred cash. Checks, I've written some, but it's more for specific reasons. |

Have to! I frequent Chinese establishments and they usually only take cash, even local bubble tea places as opposed to the larger chains. My tea place in Chinatown thankfully takes card / NFC, but I think they have to when apart from typical tea they also sell limited batch seasonal leaves. |

@FanofAction That was partly the reason yes, but the reason why they are debating on it is because they are trying to consider whether or not the cost is worth it when a lot of people are slowly starting to abandon physical money in general. Either way I doubt it's going to pass, but I guess we'll have to wait and see. |

@Retro8bit I wouldn't be against it if they did. Change is the worst part of carrying physical money. If I could, I would make everything a flat price and get rid of coins all together. |

I try to carry some cash with me all the time, but sometimes when I'm 100% sure that I will not need it, I just don't. Paying with card is faster [and I don't need to worry if the cashier has any change], but I dislike to see money disappear from my account, so I like paying with cash XD [makes it less "real"] |

I do always carry cash just in case but all my spending is through my card except for the odd place that doesn't accept cards. To counter what other people said, card payments allow me to track my spending patterns on my app and there are budgeting tools in them to track whether you are spending too much in one area. If my outgoings are too high I can track things in real time and make adjustments. That would be more problematic if I only used cash to buy stuff. |

@Aoi_hana Cards are very convenient, too bad we have to choose between convenience and coporats tracking and limiting how we can spend our money. Imagine wanting to buy something from Steam and then needing to mail cash overseas just to avoid payment processors. |

@JaniSIr oh I was mostly referring to irl payments. I mostly pay with cash (if not always nowadays) compared to online shopping which I have to use a card, most times. But yeah, I guess cards and cash are both limiting in their own ways. |

I carry lots of cash with me because I'm fucking rich. But this makes me afraid of being robbed, kidnapped, or - god forbid - raped by all those awesome doctors and scientists my country eagerly imports from less developed parts of the world. So, I have found a solution. I shove that cash in my ass! Sure, it feels a bit awkward buying gelato for the girlfriend, especially hard with coins - they may fall out and roll into the sewers, which is no challenge for a capable man liek me ofc, still annoying. But it warms my heart that a banknote someone else has it their wallet may keep a hint of my... dna. I wish you all pleasant dinner btw. Did everyone wash their hands? PS: Cash for girls, street merchants and that hut on the cliff where they heard nothing about digital revolution. 500 is must, the rest done with phone ofc, that body part we, modern fellows, value more than our heads. Like, if a snake asked me where to bite, my dick or my phone, I would choose the former. PPS: Sorry for italics, just highlights for my buddy Noboru. |

@coffeedrops This is all so that people wouldn't stuff the coin compartment of their wallets with ketamine, cursed VHS tapes, or other unspeakable refuse. Picture this: you are standing in line for an ice cream, and the guy in front of you pulls from his change pocket a huge dildo and a stack of loli-tan pics by mistake. And you are like: "Oh my god, what a shame, I must call the Morality Police at once - give me a phone!" And the man behind you hands you one. You press it to your lips, only to realize he too has pulled it from the same cursed compartment - or worse. And suddenly you are in a smoke-choked room, where three dwarves are locked in a silent dick measurement contest, and you - excited, bewildered - join in. But yours is a little longer, or a little shorter, no one can quite tell. You win, you get your twenty-five cents, and then - damn it! - there is nowhere to put it, because your wallet has no coin pocket. God goes insane. The universe collapses in orgasmic ecstasy. And we - you and I - sit on the moon, wrapped in a blanket, kicking our legs happily, catching neutrinos with our tongues. They melt like snowflakes, just like that Christmas when you were asked to dance for the very first time. |

I do because there are lots of shops who prefer cash only because of the fees that comes with using card. However, they will allow you to pay with card after a certain amount, usually 10€ because anything below wouldn't be lucrative for them. Of course, this is mainly for smaller shops, as the supermarkets make enough where the card fees are negligible. |

@traed yes, but the credit score won't build up as easily compared to someone who is used to borrowing money and always pays it back punctually
@Noboru By repeat payments I meant pay instalments and a redundancy to bills such as paid services. You can take out small loans from banks or credit unions. |

@traed this is basically what I said in my previous response. I see no point in taking loans for payments when I have enough money in the bank and I don't really like the system of borrowing money on a moral level edit: traed said: Just because the government is borrowing money doesn't mean I have to do the same thing when I don't want to and don't need to - yet. And it hopefully will stay that wayTechnically all money is borrowed money because you are expected by the government to spend it and they charge interest in inflation. |
