Near the end, when Nowak's voice just crumbled into a sob, with "You found something too. Something worth the risk of descending into hell", none of his usual iciness and apathy left... It just destroyed me.

Incredible voice acting from Tsuda Kenjirou. So subtle but so devastating. Wow...

Beautiful. Words other than "beautiful" wouldn't be enough to describe this episode.

That conversation with Rafal and hearing Nowak's final words talking to God not talking about him despite EVERYTHING that has happened, but his final words was about his daughter. My god dude, I'm starting to tear up just typing this

Absolutely fucking amazing

Nowak's complete 180, and lot of his internal monologuing with mirage Rafel just showed how deeply flawed he was internally.
I choked up when he declared "So I was the villain of this story...". How much willpower and revelations one needs to arrive at that conclusion.
Tsuda gave a masterful VA performance.

I'm really glad Novak came to realize he was the villain—so much of the killing was completely unnecessary. Draka’s final moments were captured so beautifully. This anime is just incredible. No matter what I say or how much I praise it, it’ll never feel like enough.

What an episode, Nowak totally snapped, he fatally stabbed Draka before putting the whole church on fire... his last moments were legendary with the Rafal apparition and his feelings for his daughter now that he understood the girl who exploded was Jolenta... another one to die in the starry sky... Draka didn't have this fate even though she died the next day in the bright sky, I feel bad for her especially that even during her last moments her thoughts were that it was the true end and that there's no afterlife. I wonder where this ending is going though with another time skip...

Wow, I'm absolutely speechless. The scene with Nowak speaking to the illusion of Rafał was intense but not as a powerful as what transpired later. He finally accepted the fact that the leader of heretics was his own daughter Jolenta and upon learning the truth he started praying not for himself but for his beloved daughter.

As for Draca, since the beginning I considered her to be an extremely annoying character, but I couldn't not feel sorry for her in her last moments, and yet at last she was able to welcome the morning sun with open arms.

This episode broke me.

This was the worst so far as usual authors of fiction often times open questions they cannot answer and in the end answer very poorly.

As much as i appreciate Nowak's solo end scene... how it came to that was utterly BS - i mean he stabbed her, he's an experienced fighter (old but still agile enough) and she wasn't a fighter at all, yet she managed to overcome her wound, got the knife and managed to stab him in the chest fatally - and on top of that she managed to escape through fire without being touched by it... AT THE VERY LEAST she died afterwards based on blood loss, too

Look at Draka man, so inspirational. Her view on how the world would change was pretty on point.

Nowak saying it's useless talking to a child because he feels like his words won't get to them, while it's actually him who's too dense and close-minded to change his views.

I hate Nowak but when I can't help but sympathize with him when it comes to his daughter.

This is one of the best written episodes of anything I have ever seen. Orb is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

Finally, Jolenta's dad is dead, I couldn't stand that mother fucker nor I felt bad for him, he deserved a slow painful death, not a dragged death with that mother fucker talking to the MC from the 1st episode because his death wasn't even painful, it was just dragged with uninteresting dialogue, couldn't care less about what they were talking about, and that MC from the 1st episode died millions of years ago and I don't care about that guy anymore so why bring him? to make this impactful or emotional? Well, it did the complete opposite to me; that guy died way too fast to make me care about him at this point.

And that open-minded bishop needed to die too, let's be real, so he got what was coming for him, it was also silly how Jolenta's dad was walking around with her arm, that shit must have smelled bad at this point, it's also silly how he suddenly realized that her arm belonged to Jolenta just by putting the gloves on, uhh, that's not how it works, any arm from any woman could have done the trick too, but suddenly he realized that particular arm was from Jolenta just because the gloves fit or whatever, kinda cringe.

I'm thinking about removing a point from this anime and leave it with a 7/10, let's see how the last 2 episodes go, but if I cringe again in the last 2 episodes, I will definitely remove a point.

Fuck Nowak. He always ruins everyone's plans for the sake of his stupid religion. Fuck him.

This episode really encapsulates the faith society has in the church and how some people blindly follow it while others use others faith in religion as a means to profit.

This episode is nothing but masterclass storytelling.
Nowak’s death? Pure cinema, no cap. That hallucinatory sequence with Rafal as he bleeds out against the altar isn’t just a dying vision; it’s his entire worldview shattering in real time.

And the revelation about the hand, Jolenta’s severed arm from her explosive suicide in Episode 20, being his long-lost daughter’s? Heartbreaking. No redemption arc, just a man dying with the weight of his errors, realizing too late that history won’t absolve him.

Then there’s Draka’s end… man, it’s straight-up depressing, the kind that leaves you staring at the screen in stunned silence.

The irony of Nowak acting like an ideologue against heliocentrism when once he was just a mercenary who did the bloody work, didn’t give an ass, and went home to his daughter

Also, the bit where *everyone dies*. Again! Though I’m wondering how the baker’s “son” is related, maybe he came from that town where the church was burning? Or maybe the pigeon’s letter is related…

Absolute masterpiece with the broken ceiling showing the moon as Nowak has his deathbed epiphany.
Also… someone else probably mentioned in a previous forum post on a different ep, but Nowak one of the most effective antagonists. Everyone who is vaguely protagonist related died adjacent to, or by his acts
- Hubert (still a little kid? in the ED)
- Rafal
- Badeni
- Oczy
- Jolenta (kinda, but oops)
- Schmidt

did I forget a bit verb Rafal, and the eyepatch selfish priest who has the same voice as Bruno Bucciarati?

One more thing - the bit about bakers having to bake against certain quotas and prices dictated by the state? Makes me wonder if price quotas etc was the norm back then. Based on Economix, the idea of just freely pricing bread rather than having the state dictate quantities would be around Adam Smith’s era, still about… 300 or so years away (and in a different bit of Europe)

Ohhhh and Rafal appearing to Nowak as a hallucination, like a voice from the afterlife, and matching what has been shown in the OPs (I had always just seen it as some Rafal delighting in the collapse of church orthodoxy, spoiling a plea deal that would’ve saved his life).

ok, I’m pushing my rating up

And of course, with Draka’s death, the bloody, miserable horrid reality of what’s happening, paired with the most beautiful ephiphanising music
