If anime is so huge for them, why can't they stream Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku on time? Apparently they're airing it in September (not officially confirmed, though). Really annoyed by this.

And they were doing a decent job with many big seasonals recently, e.g. Orb, Ranma 1/2, Sakamoto Days, Blue Box. Some of these aired a week behind, but those are way better than a 2-month lag.

@fanaticrat why would Netflix lie then? Even crunchyroll, an anime specific streaming service claims most of their fans are dubbed watchers

@tchitchouan Why not watch it with sound? The moans and sounds often add to the sex appeal, particularly in Japanese.

Holy fucking shit, we have this talk every single time.
No, people watching a single thing that happens to be an anime doesn't fucking mean "anime is now mainstream".

That's like saying your own mother is a nympho slut because she had sex with your dad once.

@iweebz no. You don't.

Especially since they watch dubs like you said. I can find anime to watch on my own. I can also tell what's good or bad. I don't need some paid shill on YouTube to tell me what's good or bad.

Yeah what a fucking mistake, that the industry has doubled in profit. We should be going back to when industry profits were contracting. That will save the anime industry /s

You pretty much can get the same end result, if you are that unhappy, by watching old shows.

@LuxuriousHeart funny. I come from a generation of fans that didnt ever need YouTube for anime. Why modern fans need them is strange.

I'm feeling particularly hateful lately so this time I'll say yeah I think casual normie dub watchers are a mistake, but I don't mind anime getting popular I guess, at least I'm not getting strange looks for being a fan anymore.

Watch anime through VHS for at least a year and you'll be glad that you've got the options since DVDs to be able to watch both

@iweebz the want to censor things. Most people watch anime regardless of fanservice. If the fanservice is too annoying, they'll simply avoid it. The only complaints are when they legitimately like a concept, but the fanservice ruins the series for them. Even then, they'll move on after complaining.

I was like that with isekai. Shield Hero is an example. I was excited about an anime based on MOBAs, because I like anime and MOBAs/class based games. Seems like a good mix. Except, that wasn't the case. Not that it's filled with fanservice (I don't remember any at least). Moreso that I realized that the anime wasn't catering to actual fans of such games. Moreso, it was catering to isekai harem fans. Did I censor it or want to get rid of it? No, not really. I just moved on. It's not for me. Cool.

Glad I never paid anything to shitflix, I pirate everything. And it's the only option if you really want to watch animes in their original form, not just without censorship and with japanese seiyuus/OST but in their proper original form, meaning with kanji intro/outro credits and karaoke on the screen. For example, the series I'm currently watching wouldn't be available in the original form I'm experiencing if I hadn't pirated it, this version is not available anywhere on the streaming services to my knowledge.

Anime going mainstream isn't a mistake. It's good for the industry because it brings in more money and many more shows are available to watch legally. Netflix is shitty for what they did with Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku and other shows for delaying them a week after Japan, but they provide (piss poor, garbage) access to anime. A lot more people are more open to the idea of anime characters which didn't use to be that way 10 years ago. As much as nostalgic watching "The Law of Ueki episode 15 par 2/10" on youtube, I don't want to go back to that time.

It is surprising the majority of english watchers watch the dubbed version.

But where are most of Netflix viewers from? A huge chunk of the entire world population is in China and India and some people in Japan have Netflix I think soooo.............. ?

What are they even counting as viewing anime? What is the threshold? How do we know accidental and automatic playing and hate watching arent in there?

We dont even know who is behind the screen. If most watch some dub then how do we know it isnt just a bunch of little kids being shown anything animated since the parents just want them distracted?

Also how do we know they arent just making it up as a publicity move because it is possibly cheaper to buy rights of anime than them to produce their own shows?

@iweebz This is abs true. Anime is losing its own identity and charm, and is slowly shifting into something that requires western validation and acceptance. Even western fandoms are so much more fucking different than they used to be. Certain takes/opinions that were incredibly commonplace 6-7 years ago are blasphemy rn. It’s actually maddening.

Like i find a lot of parts of otaku culture/old anime weird and p objectionable, but i still want it to… exist lol. No artist should be shoved into a narrow, hyper-palatable box just to meet some externally approved standard of “correct” expression. Shit can be weird, messy and even off putting. That’s where the soul is and that’s how the most genuinely interesting/compelling stories are made.

I don't see the relevance of that. There is so much anime that has been made in the past 40 years, that it can last you a lifetime, even if they stopped producing anime tomorrow.
Moreover, the fact that ecchi anime is being produced less (which is not exactly true) has little to do with the West and more with changing trends in Japan. Moe killed ecchi - moe aesthetic replaced the sexy adult characters that were common in anime prior to 2010's. Also, a maturization in manga comedy, and the emergence of manga writers who could write a good fucking joke, rather than needing to show panties as comedy. Pervy jokes became just as lame as fart jokes. As a result, ecchi became stagnant. In fact, there is no less ecchi than in the past, but rather, the same quantity that was produced in 2008, is produced today, but the industry grew; there is 2-3 to even 4, times more anime produced in a season, so the quantity of ecchi has been diluted.

@kronopy The first part of this is so bad. People want to engage with a living, evolving art form and witness its growth and how it shifts over time and continues to build on itself.
The loss of freedom of expression will hinder that and turn anime into a profoundly boring hivemind.

In terms of trend shifts, japan doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Global audiences have abs impacted what kind of art is being produced and what is/isn’t acceptable.

As an anime fan who literally pays zero attention to the current zeitgeist and discourse on anime I find threads like this equal parts fascinating and baffling. Seeing people mention "tourists", casuals being bad, dubs or subs being a wrong version (though this one makes me feel like that Captain America scene where I can say, Oh I get that reference!), mainstream anime being a mistake, the west is ruining anime. It's just pretty wild to me knowing that people talk about and more so, care about this. While everything is just going right over my head. I'm kinda glad that all this talk is happening in a bubble that I'll never venture into haha. Occasionally glancing at a thread like this every once in a while is more than enough for me.

Anyone can watch what they want there should be no one to dictate who can watch certain thing or not, anime is animation medium from Japan not a genre, if you dont like certain genre people are watching don't watch it and watch something else, anime is for everyone and I am glad it is getting more popular. Also a lot of dubs are great.
