This pretty much sets back to the root of the show. Good for Shiori though. Her work and talent aren't overlooked in this show and even in the season finale, we get to see her play role as a detective.

The episode's plot went with an mystery based on yet another rumor. It's a recurring plot device they've used all season long and this one revolved around the school again. Overall though, I think this was a fine series, much lighthearted in nature as a mystery.

For once, Kanna's meeting with Atsuko, and the former's desire to be like her brother to solve mysteries, what's her plan?

The classic "7 Wonders of the School" setting, which Kanna's classmates (especially of the jealous Kiriko) heard the rumours of a 13-step staircase enough to try risking going, the paranormal detective herself remains elusive to the matter. This is where Atsuko comes in to help her out, though this made-up farce that is the result of jealous romance, and other things of "irrelevance" that only amps the scare factor.

Going into the old school building, Kanna's classmates getting scared over the people they run across, and the 13-step staircase becomes all the more prominent as it could "really" result them in getting spirited away. Though at the end of it all, Kanna assumes her normal self and closes the "case" with everyone's help, largely because Chuuzenji didn't want students pouring over the secret book preparation room thanks to the actual 7 Wonders that has students gloating around day and night. At least Kanna's reputation rises in the midst of Chuuzenji giving her a pass for her plan.

Oh well, it's all fun for the finale I suppose.

And so we end with Paranormal Detective Kanna dealing with Chuzenji-sensei's request of tricking the other students away from the 7 mysteries 12 step/13 step haunted staircase mystery.

So ultimately I found this series cute and quaint in a somewhat endearing way. Worthy of a strong 6/10 I think. Going in I was only vaguely aware that it was apparently a spinoff of sorts to a much larger franchise I'm not really familiar with, so I tried to take this as its own thing entirely. And I did more or less, but I will say that I think that case in the first episode involving the dropped wallet on the bus sort of colored my expectations for what was to come in a somewhat negative, or perhaps moreso misleading light. Unless there's one I'm forgetting that was really the only case of its kind with a multiple suspect, Detective Conan-esque setup. After that we got some pretty easy to figure out, grade school-esque cases for the remainder of the show. These included a woman chased away by her domineering mother-in-law, counterfeiting, secret love codes via musical sheets, twin magic and what was in one instance literally a plot right out of Scooby Doo involving hidden treasure in a rented house. That's not to say I didn't enjoy these, but they weren't what I expected. I'm on the fence regarding if I'd watch more of this as as I said at the start by the end I found it cute and wholesome enough. What I absolutely WILL experience again however was the ED theme. My god it was fantastic. I searched out the full version on YouTube weeks ago and alongside the one from Takamine-san it was absolutely one of my favorites of the season.

Even though most of the "cases" are not really ghost / super natural related, but it does made you wonder if some of the legends are fabricated, just like how they did it with 13 steps staircase legend. Overall, this series has been fun and I had fun watching too

it's a pretty solid anime with strong detective and mystery elements. While it initially presents itself as having supernatural themes, most of the mysteries turn out to have logical explanations. Aside from Chuuzenji-sensei acknowledging the existence of the supernatural and Eno actually having a power, this is still very much a grounded detective series.

Each case starts with something that seems otherworldly, but as Chuuzenji-sensei and Kanna-chan investigate, they slowly unravel the truth behind it and reveal the human stories involved. The animation and storytelling are both well done, and I really hope we get a second season. For now, it's goodbye to Kanna and Chuuzenji.

Also, I found their partnership really funny, such a mismatched duo, but they work surprisingly well together.

this was a fun if simplistic show. i haven't watched any of the other parts that happen 'later on' in the overall timeline of this author's works but i enjoyed this one.

the previous episode being entirely slice of life with zero mystery was peculiar! but this finale actually being about a HOAX 'mystery' Kanna set up herself because Chuuzenji-sensei wanted kids to STOP HANGING AROUND inside the old-school house disturbing his 'secret lair of books' time was HILARIOUS!

it just goes to show the viewers, that just like a magician's illusions on-stage... with enough planning, prep, location, psychology, storytelling, human physiology, and luck you can pull off the seemingly impossible. even adding 'A 13th Step' to a completed flight of stairs without even a single tool used. ;> other than some willing assistants.
just an ol school American otaku enjoyin the life. don't sass me kiddies, i've been otaku probably since before you were born. leave me in peace and i won't bother you either.

Fun finale.

I would like to see more Kanna and Chuuzenji busting paranormal mystery cases animated in the future.

Kanna played creepy so well this week. It was good to see her taking more of a lead than simply being a foil for Chuuzenji. Was a nice wrap-up that got a lot of our favourite characters involved and Chuuzenji gave her a passing grade for her completion of the task. Been a nice show. Glad that I managed to catch up with it before the end.

Surprised when I see this anime is related to Mouryou no Hako. Watched it long time ago and already forget about the story and characters.

The mysteries are on the level of light brain teaser so can be easily guessed. The type of mystery is what makes the anime stand out, no fatal accident and no unexplainable supernatural occurence, except maybe Enokizu's eye.

Overall okay but towards the end the mysteries tends to become easier to guess.

Why?! Why did this show had to be only fun by the end??? I can't recommend shows that "gets better later"!
Episode 8, 9, and this last episode are the ones I appreciated the most. This episode specially was so fun with Kanna maintaining her possessed bit throughout the episode.

This really suffered from a misrepresentation, making it seem like Chuuzenji will be some kind of cold detective that would take on serious cases, when he's actually just mostly gonna be in his hidden room, figuring out supernatural rumors that will be brought to his attention by Kanna, the active deuteragonist who would actually lead of the show. By the time it was clear that this is more of a folklore storytelling, it was too late-- it already seemed like a show that missed its mark.

Nevertheless, Kanna's adorability made this easy to watch for the majority of the show. For that, the wholesomeness, and the lighthearted fun, I'll appreciate it... still a 5.5/10 though xD

I don't even know what to think. I like that Kanna is gradually developing as a character. But at the same time, I really like silly Kanna, who even in high school still acts like an innocent child. Especially considering the times she lives in.

@Jozuwa-_- I dunno, it initially seemed like an old school detective show for me. But I agree that it ended up being more relaxed than I expected. Also, was the show really that obscure that even after a couple of months, most threads have no more than 15-16 comments?

Seems like not many streaming services noticed this show. Although, even here in PH where this was aired for free on YT by Ani-One PH, it was fortunate enough to break a thousand views per episode after the first one, which only had 3k views; It was 14k on average in their main channel.

@RobertBobert Probably? I'd say it was poorly promoted here as well. If it's free and barely anybody watches it still, I think that says a lot about the impression it gave to those who did gave it a watch for an episode or 2. I myself only binge-watched it 10 episodes in, when my watchlist had some space for it.

@Jozuwa-_- Now I'm even curious what the Japanese themselves think of this show. I wouldn't say it's an incomprehensible masterpiece, but I genuinely liked this anime.

@RobertBobert It would definitely be interesting to see since even Dinner Table Detective which seems to have been mostly ignored as well turned out to be in the top 10 of Japanese TV (At least base on the video I watched from the YT channel OtakuSpirit, which talked about this Anime season's JP rankings, both for TV and the individual streaming services rankings). I was pleasantly surprised by that.

@Jozuwa-_- Judging by the difference in the Solo Leveling hype in Japan and the West, such cases are not uncommon.

This was a fun, low key finale. I like that they took it back to the roots of the show with the seven school mysteries and the students going into the old building.

Kanna's serious face and tone were so funny, I actually laughed quite a few times! Also, I enjoyed the spooky vibes.

What's more, I'm glad I was vindicated about the penultimate episode being useless and not setting anything up for the finale. :)
