I think it can't since battle shounen is too much male oriented.

You should learn what battle shounen means, it does not equal to just any shounen with some action scenes in it. the only anime on that list that can be called battle shounen is Jojo but Jojo part 6 is not really popular as previous Jojo seasons tbh . And Kino no Tabi is nowhere close to being a battle shounen.

@JoeChip I mean, it's ranked 64th in popularity on this site. Even if the average person today hasn't heard of it it's proof that it can work despite the male demographic. The first OP has 46 million views on YouTube and that video was only uploaded towards the waning days of it's popularity. If you're defining "really popular" exclusively as like, JJK, or Demon Slayer or the big 3 or Dragon Ball then maybe not but I wouldn't rule it out since we do already have some pretty popular shounens with female MCs and a lot of women watch battle shounen.

Can Dandadan be really called battle shounen though? It's an action-comedy anime for sure but not really falls under battle shounen genre with its tropes and characteristics. Sakamoto Days is another similar example of that type of anime.

@JoeChip

You can partly blame the lessened popularity of the Part 6 adaptation on the dogshit release schedule tbh. A LOT of discussion was stunted by the batch release format and killed a lot of the hype for Jojo fans.

I wanted to say Mahoutsukai no Yome but It's not a battle-shounen. [and It's not that popular either].

Soul Eater will be the better choice, but it stopped being talked about a while ago. [maybe it will get a remake from David Production... I hope so at least]

Undead Unluck depending if you call Fuuko or Andy the "true mc" but yet again, I barely see it mentioned anywhere which is a shame.

"Shy" would be a nice choice if it was popular at all, but yet again, barely anyone watched that.

edit; and maybe I will try to actually respond to this question. I like female battle shounen mc's for two reasons, It's refreshing and... shipping XD, ship art always gets more interesting when the MC is female.

But would they get popular? Well till now, It didn't really happened did it? I hope it will tho.

@tchitchouan it’s not typical shounen tho, there’s a clear difference between calling Frieren a battle shounen and calling something like Jujutsu Kaisen (or other similar anime) by the same label. Frieren is more like a drama fantasy dressed in the shounen demographic.

Nice to see someone already mentioned Shy. This is the first thing I thought of as well.

I don't quite understand why so few people watched this. I thought it was charming and decent at being a superhero action anime.

Maybe the gender of the protagonist does hurt these shows. I expect most kids/teens would be fine with a female-led battle shounen, especially these days. Or maybe the show is mediocre regardless.

Akame ga Kill, Soul Eater, Kill la Kill, Shana, Railgun, Kabaneri, Claymore [not sure if it fits the so called battle shounen], Summertime render [same story], Kyouko Suiri and many more but I am bored by just browsing through first 200 top popular shows. But I am pretty sure OP wouldn't mind browsing up till maybe top 500?

I guess we skip some shows ain't we?

Akame - 30th place of popularity
Railgun - 370th - 300k members
Shana - 437th,

As I would agree with Shana, you ain't knowing what's popular. Haters used to be believable.

If we're talking about just becoming popular - yes it's possible, but if we're talking about the top of the top in terms of popularity (like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood or Jujutsu Kaisen) - I don't think it's possible purely due to the primary nature of their popularity.

Well, no one can swim against the current faster than the best swimmers who swim with the current.

@perseii @Szczelajo Cool, more people who watched Shy. I loved it precisely because it has a female MC, the battles were cool and imo, and the last episodes in S2 were on the scale of some male lead actionshounen. Hope it get's a S3 but unlikely sadly.

The real gold would be a series that puts a woman front and center without toning down the bloody violence and the carnage. Give her a goal that burns, a tragic backstory that hurts, and villains who make us genuinely fear for her life.
You give her the spotlight and let her go full-powered monologue mid-fight. viewers will eat it up.
Btw I'm obviously talking about Maki Zenin here.
Style minimalist, brutalise battle hardened body that show she been through wars. That’s the blueprint. Not "tough girl lite" but someone who radiates aura through physique, ruthlessness brutality and violence.

@JoeChip How narrow is the definition in your mind? If it's too narrow then it's basically equivalent to just "knockoffs of DBZ". If there are battles and it is shounen then it is battle shounen. I don't get the "battle shounen elitism" that there's only 20 true battle shounens in the world. If you're that strict on the definition, it might not even be possible to have a battle shounen with a female MC because that would probably put it outside of the definition.

Keijo and AKame ga Kill are 2 of my favs, i wasn't super into KLK but i think its still pretty GOATED

anyway, much of the time when we DO get a female lead in action, she mostly fights guys, which i hate... so its not always a win for me even if the MC is a girl

This thread had potential, but then nearly every poster demonstrated that they have no idea what a battle shounen anime is.

First battle shounen with a female protagonist that was popular is called Inuyasha (2000), which is also somewhat of a genre mishmash, so it's debatably a battle shounen and the female protagonist didn't really do much besides spectating the fights. Then there was Soul Eater (2008) and Queen’s Blade (2009).

Yes, but it needs a male MC alongside the female MC so that the male audience can self-insert. Among all the battle shounen mentioned so far (so excluding all the anime that are original or whose source material isn't a shounen manga and Keijo!!!!!!!! since it's a spokon), only Shy doesn't have any male character listed as main and it's ranked 2655th by popularity on MAL.

The real question should be "can a battle shounen with only female main characters be really popular?" I'd say no.

Mal stats are nowhere a reasonable way to judge a show's poularity. Hokuto no Ken is insanely poular in Japan and inspried many workd that came after it but it's barely known among western anime fans of today.

And it's nowhere "super popular" as you would think it is, When it comes to popularity Cutie Honey easily curb stomps, but that's not a battle shounen either.

I'd probably say a show like Magic Knight Rayearth fits the bill. It's magical girl anime, but really that has nothing to do with its target demographic, and it easily appeals to boys and girls. Nothing I've seen in that show feels like it targets either boys or girls specifically, other than the main characters being girls themselves, which I assume the criteria of this topic would have to allow.

Railgun is not even battle shounen, my boy.

FYI, Fist of the Northstar has many video games , and even a Hollywood movie, with a remake on the way, so it's much more likely for a western anime watcher to know Fist of the Northstar/Hokuto no Ken than Soul Eater.

Technically it's not isekai, since Higurashi Kagome doesn't go to another world. She time travels to the Sengoku period and can also go back to the present whenever she wishes.
Isekai involves a different world that the protagonist usually ends up stuck in.

But yeah, it's a genre mix. There's some battle shounen, some normal action, some romance, some comedy, some drama, maybe even isekai if you bend the rules of the genre a bit. Also ecchi, tragedy, epic fantasy and there's even a few episodes with school life.

If it wasn't needlessly long and had an unsatisfactory ending I'd feel like rewatching it now. Maybe I should give the sequel from 2020 a try after all...
